Introducing Recipes in Grocery 2.0
We’ve added Recipes and Meal Planning to the smartest, most efficient Grocery list app.
Grocery’s raison d'etre has always been to be the most efficient grocery list app. This means being efficient when shopping, like using SmartSort to automatically put your shopping list in order, or using the Apple Watch app so you don’t have to keep pulling your phone in and out of your pocket or purse. But it also means being efficient when creating your list. While the UX of adding individual items is great, we realized that shoppers who often cook from recipes didn’t have the best experience adding those items to their Grocery list.
In Grocery 1.0 the best solution was to use another recipe app to export a list to reminders (We used Paprika and Basil for a while), or you could just copy and paste ingredients from a website. And while those methods still work, in Grocery 2.0 you can now create, manage, and share a personal library of recipes.
You can also create a meal plan of several recipes — so you can shop for all the needed ingredients at once. Just open the recipe and select “Add to Meal Plan”. Doing so will ask you which items to add to your list (uncheck what you already have) and add the recipe to the Meal Plan. This will make the recipes easy to find when you’re ready to cook.
So that covers creating recipes and planning them, but then there’s the actual cooking. We had 2 ideas that we think have a huge impact of the cooking experience: custom recipes layouts, and an innovative timeline feature.
Custom Layouts
Most recipe apps split ingredients and directions into two distinct groups. We suspect this is a hold over from recipe books to make it easier to add the needed items to your list. But in software, data is portable. We can easily generate a list of all ingredients in a recipe and we can ask you which ones you need. This means you can intersperse your ingredients within the steps of the recipe so you no longer need to navigate or scroll up to the ingredients list to see how many or what type of an ingredient you need. The relevant information is right where you need it.
We have 5 content types available in Recipes: Items, Notes, Steps, Headers, and Photos, all of which can be arranged in any order. If you prefer a traditional layout, you can still put all the ingredients at the top. Or if you prefer to include a photo with every step, group things into sections, or add personal notes along the way, you can do that too. And anything in between.
Timeline
The second innovation is timers. When we set out to build Recipes, we knew we had to include a timer feature. But we wanted to make timers more visual, to give you a sense of the complexity of a recipe, the time it would take to make a recipe as a whole, and how the current timer fits into the rest of the recipe.
What we created is a stacked list of progress bars, one for each timer in the recipe. Each bar’s length is relative to the others. As you complete timers, they push incomplete timers off to the right, such that by the end, you’ll have a timeline of what you cooked when. For complex dishes, this makes it easy to know when to start cooking which parts so that everything is done at the same time.
Words that look like timers (e.g. “6 minutes”) are automatically parsed out of steps, and turned into tappable buttons.
Since iOS doesn’t allow apps to make sounds in the background, if you close the app while a timer is running, we’ll send a push notification to remind you. This way won’t accidentally miss your timer.
Beyond Custom Layouts and Timers, here are a few more interesting recipe related features:
Editing and Markdown
In edit mode, there is an add bar at the bottom of the screen to add any content type to your recipe. For example, you can tap “Item” to start adding items. Add an item, tap the up arrow to add another one. Then tap done, and choose “Step” to start adding steps the same way. Drag and drop to rearrange.
Behind the scenes, Grocery is managing a Markdown text file. If you’ve never used Markdown, it’s a way to format plain text with in-line characters. Because of this, you can be in complete control of your recipe data. If decide to stop using Grocery, you’ll still be able to read your recipes. If you choose to share the recipe with someone, they won’t need to install Grocery to open it. You can edit and view recipe files in any text editor.
Pasting from the Web
A common way to find recipes is on blogs and websites. For this we created commands to “Paste as Items” and “Paste as Steps”. Just copy and paste into the appropriate format, splitting into separate items at line breaks. If you enable Automatic CleanUp, Grocery will even attempt to split out the notes from the titles.
Prep Notes
We added a field to ingredients in a recipe called “Prep”. This is in addition to the “Kind, Amount, Notes” field. This may seem like a small thing, but in practice it can be really helpful. This allows us to hide any prep notes while you’re shopping where you don’t need to know that the onions need to be diced. You just need to know that you need “2 Red Onions. But when it comes time to cook you’ll see “Onions, 2 Red, Diced”
Shortcuts
We created a shortcut to make it really easy to explore recipes online. What the shortcut does is let you select from a list of popular recipe keywords and performs a Duck Duck Go recipe search. So with a few taps you can browse “Cheesy Garlic Potatoes”, “Healthy Chicken Fried Rice” or “Vegetarian Quinoa Pasta”. Get the Shortcut
Then to make it easy to import these recipe into Grocery, we created a shortcut that walks you through all the steps to copy and paste each content block (Title, description, ingredients, directions). It then creates a new recipe in your iCloud Drive. Get the Shortcut
