The elaborate silver reliquary urn in the Chapel of St. Rosalia at Palermo Cathedral was designed by Mariano Smiriglio and created by local silversmiths in 1631. 

The urn allegedly holds the bones of St. Rosalia. In 1825 the British geologist William Buckland was allowed to examine the relics and he recognized them as the bones of a goat. The priests of the cathedral claimed that St. Rosalia would not allow Buckland to see her bones because he was not Catholic. No one has been allowed to examine the bones since.

It is best not to bring this up when visiting Palermo.

Passeggiando per le vie dell'Albergheria . . Attraversando il mercato di Ballarò si giunge a piazza Carmine, un grande allargamento irregolare, dominato dal grande cupolone simbolo della sfarzosa chiesa barocca e dall’annesso convento della chiesa del Carmine Maggiore. La cupola è la più bella in assoluto a Palermo, visibile da ogni parte della città antica si impone allo sguardo dello spettatore. una chiesa barocca annessa ad un convento. La costruzione originaria risale al XIII secolo, voluta dai Carmelitani, che giunsero a Palermo nel XII secolo, ancora prima che giungessero i Padri Gesuiti. La chiesa originaria nel 1626 fu abbattuta e ricostruita tra il 1627 e il 1667 su progetto di Mariano Smiriglio, architetto del Senato palermitano. La facciata fu rifatta nel 1814.  Domina su tutto il mercato lo splendido cupolone,simbolo della sfarzosa chiesa barocca e dell’annesso convento, decorato esternamente da stucchi (cosa insolita per una struttura esterna esposta a tutte le intemperie) tra i quali spiccano quattro telamoni che intervallano dei grandi finestroni; la loro presenza è a sostegno della calotta, che culmina con il lanternino, ingentilita da maioliche palermitane smaltate di color verde e nero, colori dello stemma dei Carmelitani. . .
