Still thinking about Smoke hovering over Stack with that stake and just. Not being able to do it. He knew the risks. He knew what vampires are capable of. He'd witnessed a horde of them tear people apart. But he couldn't do it

He knew good and well what he'd unleash onto the world by letting him go and I'm sure it killed him inside, but the world just didn't mean as much as his baby brother

it's not that in an ideal world with no fandom racism there would be no remmick fan content. remmick's a great character; his role is small but crucial to the movie's themes, he brings the sort of villainous joie de vivre to being evil that i always personally enjoy in a bad guy blorbo, he gets a lil disney villain musical number, he's got just the barest hints of a long and somewhat tragic backstory which is exactly the sort of thing that's fun to expand in fic. it's just that in a world without fandom racism there'd be a moderate amount of remmick content drowning in a FLOOD of smokestackcest. coming just behind the smokestack juggernaut you'd get a bunch of postcanon stack/reader and precanon smoke/reader/stack threeways, a healthy amount of fic for the canon het ships, a dash of mary/annie. instead we've got this situation where it feels like remmick content is overwhelmingly dominating the immediate fan responses, especially from fans who aren't black. that a wildly disproportionate amount of the audience came away from this movie feeling like the one character they could really empathize with and fandomize is the white guy who's there for, again, literally like five minutes of screentime. doesn't that seem weird.

the current state of the sinners tag really ought to be the nail in the coffin for anyone who still doubts fandom has a really weird unwillingness to engage with characters of color and will hyperfixate on any white guy available no matter what the source material is actually like. this is a movie that gave you michael b. jordan playing morally dubious well-dressed identical twin mobsters with a deliciously fucked up codependent-enmeshed relationship and the tag is overwhelmingly full of fic about self-inserts having sex with the white villain who's in the movie for like five minutes total and has one line of dialogue alluding vaguely to a potentially sympathetic backstory. i haven't seen a single twincest fic yet. i like remmick and his disney villain swag just fine and i'm not even personally into twincest but you just cannot convince me remmick ships would be dominating the fandom responses in a world where smoke & stack were played by a white guy of comparable conventional attractiveness to mbj lol who would that even be

Seeing Sinners altered my brain chemistry and made me mourn the slower days of fandom when a movie like this would spark thousands of fics, gifsets, meta, etc.

And, more importantly for me, more than 12 SmokeStackcest fics on AO3—5 of which are in Chinese
