82-year-old grandmother snowblowing driveway in zero temps goes viral

A reporter at WZZM-TV posted a photo of Marlen Downing snowblowing her driveway and sidewalks and those of her neighbors in below-zero temperatures.

Downing told WZZM that she “was waiting for this snow” because it reminded her of growing up in Harvey, North Dakota. She said she looks forward to winter and the snowfall.

Snowblowers and Stilettos

Dear 65-year-old lady snowblowing her sidewalk in cheetah-print leggings and stilettos, holding a cigarette,

You are my hero.  Here is why:

One - I am too lazy to even consider snowblowing my own driveway, and I am an able, 29 year-old-woman.  The thought of removing my ass from the couch and into the arctic winter to do manual labor has never crossed my mind.  

Two - I don't know how to use a snowblower.  Actually let's be honest, I don't even know how to use a shovel.

Three - You have a fashion sense rivaled only by Elizabeth Taylor.  While most grannies your age are wearing mumus and house slippers, you are rocking form-fitting animal print and 4-inch heels.  You are embracing what some would say are fashion no-no's and giving ageism a run for its money.

Four - I admire your ability to multi-task.  It's not an easy feat to coordinate moving a burning object in and out of your mouth with one hand and operate heavy machinery with the other.  You didn't let a winter chore interfere with the fact that you needed a smoke break.  I like that.

And finally, all of this was done on the sidewalk of a busy street.  You couldn't care less what people driving by thought of the scene you were making.  It's almost as if you wanted everyone to see what could be done if you put your mind to it.  This is a man's world?  I think not.  

You have taught me some important lessons that I hope to emulate one day.  And I thank you for it.
