like yeah a lot of stuff in this show are so heartbreaking and have torn my own heart out many times over, but I'm taking this rewarch to just appreciate the surface silliness when I can without looking too deep into it.

The post you just reblogged about infantilizing autistic characters and specifically Steven Grant is actually one of my favorite things ever and I wished people talked about it more. I remember watching MK when it first came out and seeing Steven and being like omg he’s just like me!! because a lot of the times I don’t really connect with autistic characters for one reason or another but seeing Steven and seeing him have the same mannerisms and characteristics as me was so so wonderful and the fandom was great at first and it seems like the more time passes and the farther we get from when the show stopped having new episodes, he gets characterized so differently than how he was in the show. Like yeah he was awkward and unsure around Layla but also look at the circumstances!! Everyone’s turned him into an uwu baby child and forget that he got angry and he was smart and he was brave and he was an adult man and not a child regardless of him being autistic. Idk, I just really liked that post and I was so glad to see someone on the same page as me and I wanted to share my thoughts lmao

I think the wonderful thing about Steven is that he feels so authentically autistic, him and Marc both (and im assuming Jake as well, but it's just too soon to tell in which ways he will experience/be visibly autistic) and I think that's both the uprising and the downfall of it because in not using the word "autistic" in the show it paves the way both for genuine connection AND the surface level ableist "aw steven" mentality we see a lot now

i was watching the first two episodes the other day, mostly because I'm rewatching for Steven- an aside, but fandom had honestly put me off Steven. ofc I loved him so much but I couldn't truly connect because the (imho) accurate Steven that I liked to think about and analyze is NOT the Steven we see in 98% of fanfiction or tumblr posts. but anyway I was watching the first two episodes and I gotta say, for as much nervous stuttering as he does in fanfiction, he really- listen I think he does a reasonable amount of nervous stuttering when he is IN truly stressful situations that have him completely off kilter.

you can't really script your way out of a conversation with a creepy guy trying to tell you abt his lord and savior ammit the croc

anyway. all this to say, I completely understand where you're coming from and I'm really glad you felt seen in my own frustration. it's always validating to see someone else verbalizing a deep rooted but glossed over issue that bothers you

will i ever get over the bad buddy rooftop kiss?

short answer : no

long answer : after 30 consecutive days where i watched at least 2 bad buddy episodes per day i had decided to take a break for today, and a few more days to refresh my brain. but the forces that be had other plans cos idek from where i saw a snippet of their rooftop convo and i had to go back and watch episode 5 3/4 and 4/4 again and to no one's surprise i keep finding more and more things to appreciate about that episode.

this post isn't to analyze anything from that episode as people far more intelligent, eloquent and observant than me have done before 100 times of before.

i just wanted to do a (in awe) rant of the episode 5 of bad buddy. a true masterclass in story telling, directing, acting and emoting and ofc how can i forget using music as a narrative tool, especially in the scene where pran performs the song and pat now listens to it in the full context of his own feelings and then the patpran wai scene and most importantly in the rooftop scene where the music plays such an important role in building and then maintaining that tension!!

it's such an excellent piece of work because i've watched this already 10 times at least and i literally discovered the show just a month ago. i already know how everything is going to end. i literally just rewatched ep 11 and 12 yesterday. i know its all building upto something far more happy than sad in the end. AND YET.

And yet my heart was in my throat, my eyes were glued to their faces and their micro expressions, i was still in awe at their performance, at the words exchanged both audible and not, and the music behind adding to the' edge of the seat clutching of pillow' experience then the kiss happens and im as shook as the day i saw it.

I genuinely cannot remember the last time or if ever i had an experience of rewatching a (romantic) scene and it's impact gets reinforced and amplified each time i watch it in the way the bad buddy rooftop scene has done it.

that too the fact that i haven't given my brain time to forget the sheen of it, the brilliance of it, the impact of it, the fact that the kiss is a microcosm of their whole story, but even without all of that, that kiss by itself was to say the very least life changing.

my brain hasn't forgotten any of that. i havent allowed it to forget. so then me watching it again so close should not be having this effect on it. and yet.

and i just know that if i hit the replay button again this very instant i will feel all of those emotions all over again. that just boggles my mind, cos what is the explanation for it. logically i should be not this into it each time i watch it. why is hedonistic adaptation not doing its thing? it really do be making no sense to me. i guess this is once again a testament to how great of a show it is, how even beyond all the ingredients we can point out, the actors, the director, the writing , music everything, there has to be some unexplainable magic involved. the kind of magic that i highly doubt can be replicated anywhere. the kinda magic that makes even evolutionary responses bend to its will. solid stuff. 12/10 would recommend.

how i try to avoid ooc characterizations;

so for this i’m gonna use eren as my example

if you’re converting them to a modern au like i do know who you’re basing your character off of, so i’m basing mine off of s1-3 eren mainly, just without like all the trauma if ykwim? so it’s literally just his personality

he’s a hardcore aries, he is passionate, aggressive, he’s not afraid to stand up for what he believes in, he thinks quickly but doesn’t really think things through, he’s an esfp/isfp (idrk??), he cares about those he loves, hardheaded, strong willed, determined

i take all these attributes and just apply them when people request eren in certain situations, i imagine what he would do or say, and i also think about times in the show where he has been in a situation similar, so like arguing with his s/o gets hectic because there’s times when he argues with people and just gets so tempered and fired up no matter who it is, even with armin and mikasa, so why would he be any different with his s/o?

for things that we have never really seen, i def use personality, so like i headcanon eren being clingy and very touchy, the reason for this being he’s so passionate about thinks he believes in, so that being said he’s passionate about his lover, he’s infatuated with the idea of them and the fact that they are his is so mind blowing to him he just feels the need to be with them as much as he can because to him it’s just like “wow?”

i also think i’m good at analyzing characters as well so i find myself constantly trying to break apart characters, episodes, scenes etc to understand it as much as i can, and that goes deeper than personality and more into my headcanons as well

also don’t be afraid to just pull shit that just makes sense off the top of your head, because some things you just can’t explain why it makes sense to you but it does, and chances are if it makes sense to you it’ll probably make sense to others as well, i do this one a lot

like in my recent headcanons i said that eren would be more worried about his s/o getting tatted than they would, i can’t explain why i hc this but i just do??? ofc if i thought about it more i could probably give a valid explanation but it just sounds right to me LMFAO

and don’t try to fit characters to your liking, make it realistic, really pay attention to them as a character, like as much as we might want eren to be into all things sex i can pluck a few things i feel like he wouldnt really be into, some things he wouldn’t do, just because you like it doesn’t mean he will all the time, like i don’t think he would be into bondage too much because he’s been tied up so many times it’s just kind of like ????, i don’t think he likes toys really because the thought of something else that’s not him getting his s/o off kind of shrinks his ego, things like that, but of course if YOU think so and you can explain why then go for it because there is probably someone out there who can agree!

don’t separate your version of the character you’re writing about from their actual character, like for example kenma, i see a lot of people making him out to be this “uwu soft boy💕🥺” when like no time in haikyuu did it really hint to him being like that besides him being quiet i guess??? like he literally has gotten into physical fights LMAO it’s kind of weird, and this goes along with like not making a character to be how you want them to be, because they’re still an actual character, so try to stick to the script that the creator gave if ykwim??

do your research about the character. search up their likes/dislikes, rewatch some of their scenes see how they act, research about their zodiac sign and personality type if it can give you clues to the character (cause zodiacs aren’t always accurate), like if you see a character acting quiet/shy then when they interact with others apply these two traits

GOD BLESS SARA GOODMAN, i loooved damsels, i'll have to rewatch it soon but cass immediately choosing to go with tulip/look out for her was So Good. also him asserting himself as more than the idiot sidekick, and the way he asks if tulip wants company when she leaves at the end aaaaahhh. also tulip like..lowkey trying to tell jesse whats going on but never getting it out killed me and cass respecting that even if he disagrees AND im really happy they showed what really happened between eugene and tracy that was so heartbreakingly sad wtf :(

YES she knows what we’re about!!! Monster Swamp was my favorite for all the reasons I discussed in my recent podcast about it - it encapsulates the existential horror and fundamental injustice of Annville as an entity ruled by white patriarchy and really lays out the mechanisms by which it operates, it gives us our first Julip flashback and great insight into Jesse’s morality in the Jesse/Quincannon Alamo scene, and ofc Tulip and Cassidy have the best meet-cute/meet-gross I’ve ever seen. 

Damsels is very interesting - I’m still picking it apart but the theme of the foibles of thinking of yourself as a hero in search of a reward/validation run through it - we see that in the scene with Eugene and Tracey which devolves into absurd tragedy and in the scene with Jesse and Featherstone where she plays him by preying on his need for validation (especially re: his mission to find God) and his weakness for playing the hero and the gentleman for those he considers vulnerable. And then there’s Tulip who is also no traditional damsel and despite the fact that she’s in distress won’t accept help from anyone, though she ultimately relents and tells Cassidy what’s going on. It’s hard for me to analyze her reticence much without knowing what exactly it is she did to incur Viktor’s wrath, but according to Ruth the reason she has trouble telling Jesse is bc she’s afraid he’ll shame her for it - we saw how awful he can be about that in s1 ep8 “He Gone.” She comes close to telling him and Jesse does reach out to her but Tulip isn’t able to trust him with whatever it is she’s afraid of sharing - though she does ultimately tell Cassidy. 

I’m confused about the scene at the end - did she go out to get caught on purpose? It’s hard to tell, but whatever the reason she certainly accepts her fate at the end there (also I love how Viktor sent like 12 people after her - they know how resourceful she is!). From previews I think it’s clear she goes a long way towards getting herself out of the situation (and fights that one Vinny Vega-looking guy), and I kind of wonder if Jesse uses Genesis on Cassidy to get him to tell him where Tulip might be (accidentally bc he’s freaked out or on purpose bc who could blame him, and also Cassidy may just tell him himself) and then they go to help her but she’s already on her way out and possibly then the SoK shows up and shoots everyone lol....and later we get that scene of Tulip punching Cassidy for telling Jesse probably - they seem to be dressed in their clothes from that episode (Tulip’s incognito hoodie outfit and Cassidy in his yellow polo). Poor boy - just trying to protect and help everyone as best he can. :( Obviously he and Tulip will work it out though - I think in the next few episodes we’ll probably get that blood bag scene and we’ll lose our shit lol

It was great to see Cassidy asserting his usefulness to the group (like he did last episode with Jesse) and his right to know what was going on as he’s been made party to all these secrets. It’s easier to keep Tulip’s secrets than it is to tell Jesse about them bc telling Jesse would hurt both Tulip and Jesse whereas just keeping the secrets leaves Jesse blissfully unaware so at least one party doesn’t know how they’re being harmed by the secret. But on top of all that, it’s clear he has Tulip’s back and cares deeply about her - when she leaves bc of her “sharp, grabby feeling” he wants to make sure she’s ok because he knows in that moment that emotionally, she needs his company more than Jesse does, but he also reassures her that it’s best to tell Jesse because he loves her and he might respond positively to hearing about her “troubles” - to which Tulip replies that doing so would only make things worse. And there’s the way he knows what’s going on with her emotionally because of personal experience - you can tell that in particular when he says “you’re afraid of someone” with such heartfelt sympathy. 

oh man this episode was SO MUCH. I’ll have to include all of this in my review (working on the episode 1 review rn). btw did you listen to my podcast on the first two episodes? how did you like it?
