An Introduction

Hello. My name is Jordan, and as the title of my blog states, I used to be a Harry Potter fan.

I want to keep this somewhat concise, but I initially got into Harry Potter when I was in elementary school. I was more a movie fan than a book fan, but I still considered myself a fan all the same (I wasn't in the fandom though, since this was before I knew what fandoms even were). I could tell you that Hermione was my favorite (mostly because I could relate to being a brainy outcast), I went to an exhibition in Seattle, saw the last movie in theaters, and I dreamed about the day I would get to go to Hogwarts.

As the years passed, I moved on to other interests, though my opinion of the series remained positive. I remember seeing the first Fantastic Beasts film in theaters as well, and really liked it (my grandparents liked it as well, and I couldn't get them to watch any of the Harry Potter films beyond the fourth).

And then, my feelings started to change during the production of the second FB film, Crimes of Grindelwald. It just seemed like controversy after controversy surrounded the film and it hadn't even come out yet. First wasJohnny Depp being kept on the cast despite having been accused of domestic abuse (I know he's largely considered innocent now, but we didn't know that at the time) despite the same studio firing Jamie Waylett for growing pot. Then there was Nagini being revealed as a human woman and portrayed by a South Korean evidence (not only is the naga an Indonesian myth, but having Nagini be an Asian woman permanently transformed into a snake opened up a lot of unfortunate implications). The last I can think of off the top of my head was the announcement that despite Dumbledore being revealed as gay in 2007 (after the release of the last book), he would not be portrayed as gay in the films (Queerbaiting 101, and I distinctly remember this ticking me off before I even realized that I was bisexual).

It was about that point I disavowed Fantastic Beasts (and my grandparents later confirmed that the second film was a mess). However, I thought that my childhood nostalgia for the Harry Potter series couldn't be tarnished. Hell, I distinctly remember that in December 2019/January 2020, I was starting to reread the first book.

It was about that same time that Rowling let her TERF flag fly so much that even the cis folks couldn't ignore it anymore. (This was also a year before I realized I'm probably a demigirl).

I don't quite remember when I found out, whether it was the winter of 2020 or the summer of 2020. Personally, I think that's a bit immaterial. What I do remember is how disappointed I was. Initially, I fully prepared myself to disavow the series and launched myself headlong into social activism (the BLM protests last year were also a pretty good catalyst).

Then, in May of 2021, I asked an online friend of mine (hi Rita) if she wanted to rewrite the Harry Potter series at some point. I don't quite remember what I was going through my head. Maybe I was watching too many videos analyzing how icky Rowling's beliefs were. Maybe it had something to do with Ian Hart (the guy who played Professor Quirrell in the first movie, but I know him better as that guy who played John Lennon three separate times). However it started, we just went off about the problems we had with the series. And then I started revisiting the books and the movies. It was about then that I started realizing that even beyond the moments that hadn't aged well (*cough* SPEW *cough*) and Rowling's implicit prejudices, I started realizing that the series had many more issues than I'd realized previously (nonsensical worldbuilding, etc).

So that's basically the story up until now. The rewrite we're working on is still a very much work in progress, and I do plan on eventually dedicating blog space to that. For now though, it's just my space to reblog posts I find interesting and to add my own voice to the mix and keep my main blog mainly Beatles oriented (especially since I'll be rereading all seven books, wish me luck).

Aside from one last assurance that I do not hold with any of Rowling's beliefs, I would like to add that you should not expect regular updates.

can i just say how I LOVE that Samu knew from the begging that he was about to have his bestest friend?! how he just FELT the power duo that was about to be formed!?!??! also do u think tsumu gets unreasonably jealous that the most beloved miya duo now is not atsumu and osamu anymore? instead its miya hisako and miya osamu.

also also, i can see when all 4 miyas come back to the twins hometown in hyogo to family events and what not, everyone stays in their childhood home. and in the weekend mornings, Osamu strolls around the farmer's market with little Hisako, the same way his toddler self would do it with Mama Miya back in the days (tsumu rarely woke up early enough to make it, and even if he did he was a grumpy baby in the mornings. it was everyone's best interest to let him sleep in lol)

Do I ever!!! Thank you for asking me this because there are so many fantastic fics that I need everyone to read :) (These are not listed in any particular way, I love them all equally and couldn't pick my favourite if I tried.)

The Babysitters Club by salemofficialbb [completed] I don't actually know if I read this or Sub Culture first but I know that I consider both of them my introductory fics when it comes to Steddie. This fic is a chat-based fic that focuses on the older kids and their efforts to get Steve & Eddie together. It's cute and it's fun and it's one I reread when I need to smile. It's got Ronance, it's got Jonathan/Argyle and a ship I really like but don't see a lot of, which is Vickie/Chrissy. I laughed out loud while reading this, I squealed at times, I felt lighter after finishing it. (Also, something I did not notice the first time around because I'm v dumb is that most of the time when the characters send photos in the chats, the author links to a Tumblr with the photos so you can see them. It's immersive and I love it and yeah, please read this fic if you want to smile.

sub-culture by palmviolet [completed] I know this one gets recommended all the time but there's a reason for that. This fic is just mind-blowing in every way. It's beautifully written and the author has such a grip on the characters that they might as well just start writing for the show. It had me hooked from the first chapter where Steve helps Eddie through a panic attack and I read the whole thing in one sitting and my life is better for it, I think. The author takes such care in writing the story in a way that's respectful not only to the time period (make sure you read the author's notes because I have learnt so much about 80s gay culture from this author) but also with the characters. I really feel like I'm not doing it justice but I don't want to spoil anything about it because it's just amazing. If you haven't read it, please do. It's well worth your time. [Also, while I'm here, please consider reading palmviolet's other works such as the lathe (a time loop fic that's taken years off of my life) and their who says it was simple series (I am a simp for Eddie & Max interactions and would like to see more of them.)

Camp Folktale, Summer of ‘86 by cairparavels [WIP] I'm pretty sure I rec'd this in a Waiting Room author's note because I am obsessed with it. It's a fluffy little camp councillor's au and every update has me kicking my legs and losing my mind. All the ingredients for a good soup are in this fic: Steve being uselessly in love with Eddie, Eddie being uselessly in love with Steve, the kids being little shits and trying to get them together, the kids having fleshed out little stories alongside Steve and Eddie, Ronance, Chrissy and Fred (which I didn't expect but love) and Mews II playing a pivotal role in not only Steddie's story but my happiness. The author updates incredibly regularly and every update is great so don't let the fact it's a WIP put you off. It's worth your time and a nice cheerful story if you want a break from reading a lot of angsty fics.

all my ghosts (are with me) by steve_the_hair_harrington (peter_parkerson) [completed] This is a series of three fics that focus on Steve's reaction to sleeping with Eddie for the first time. The first two don't feature Eddie as a character but rather they focus on Steve & Robin as she tries to help him through his realisation that he likes Eddie. All of the parts are very well written and the friendship between Steve & Robin is spot on. (Not to go on a tangent but I also really appreciate the way that this author writes both Robin & Eddie as autistic characters. I felt it was handled really respectfully and also showed that two people can be autistic and have different ways of presenting it, which is always really nice to see.)

I Wake Up When Everyone's Gone by beetlesandstars [completed] This one is angsty as hell and I love it. This one-shot focuses on how Steve and, to a lesser extent, Dustin deal with Eddie's death. It's not a very long read but manages to do a lot in a little amount of time and I love when stories really focus on grief. It's one of my favourite things to read about/consume. Especially when they tackle the idea that grief isn't uniform and one person's grief isn't going to be the same as another even if they're grieving the same person. And this author does that beautifully.

Who the fuck reads to you in hell? by lichtbringer (percyinpanties) [completed] Another one-shot. This fic is about Steve reading Lord of the Rings to Eddie while he's in the hospital recovering from the events of volume two. I love the snapshots of his friends while he's in the process of waking up. I love the characterisation of Steve. I love that Eddie is alive and being taken care of. I just love this fic.

Keep it Steady, Eddie by outofmygourd [completed] Another classic when it comes to Steddie fics but one that I've only recently got around to reading. This fic features Eddie working at Family Video with Robin & Steve and the slow-burn but incredibly sweet story of them falling in love. It also features Robin/Vickie and I smiled every time they were mentioned because they're so cute and I love them. Like with Sub-Culture I don't want to mention specific scenes and ruin them but there are so many amazing scenes in this fic. I really loved how the author incorporated the kids in a way that felt really natural as well as Wayne. It felt like the world was alive outside of Steve/Eddie and I just loved it. Definitely recommend this fic and also Not so Bad by the same author.

Some Cupids Kill With Dice by horrormoviebarbie [WIP] I bookmarked this fic with Lady Gaga's speech from that meme because I truly felt like it encapsulated the way I felt about it. In this fic, Steve Harrington is a single father to Dustin & Max who falls in love with his kid's English teacher, Eddie Munson. There are four chapters out right now and each of them felt like a gift from the universe. This author not only understands Steve on a cellular level but manages to create a story so amazing separate from the events of Stranger Things (I believe this is an AU in which there are no monsters) that I would not only buy it as a published book but I also want to see it made into either a TV Show or Movie.

the most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it’s you by greatunironic [completed] So I read the entirety of this fic in one sitting last night and it has changed me as a person. The characterisation of the kids as adults is perfect. The fear of rejection and the sunken cost mentality that if you leave something for too long then it's not worth touching? Killed me. The depiction of death (especially from a long-term illness) and the different types of grief that follow it took me out and put me back together again. I want to own Ed Levy's discography. I want to pin his interviews up on my wall. I want Madchen and Robin to be my best friends. I want this fic tattoed onto the back of my eyelids.

I don't know how many you wanted so I'm going to leave it there in case I've maybe gone a bit overboard. Curious question, Tobio/Astro looks not that much like Tenma besides eye color and hair color (in most adaptations Tobio has black hair), think Tobio is supposed to resemble his mother more?

Probably! Im not that well versed in other iterations but 03 Tobio could definitely take after Hoshie more.

I have my own little au ive been working on and for me i kinda split it down the middle.

for Hoshie:

(its not shown lol) but Tobio has light brown hair, green eyes, and freckles from her! (ig her smile too haha)

Tenma:

when his hair gets longer it starts to look like Tenmas, ik Hoshie also has a bit of a nose but he would have grown into a Tenma nose if he had gotten a chance. Also, even at his young age, he picked up on alot of Tenmas mannerisms.

In the end, yeah, definitely taking after Hoshie!

I want to know your opinion on the kghn relationship in nekoma match. I feel like there's layers to it. But honestly what's your first reaction to it and when you reread it. You can talk about anything other than kghn too

Ik this is a very specific ask but because i love your kghn analysis and meta. There's so less of that in fandom. Obviously feel free to not answer it If this seems like too much, i hope I'm not coming off as entitled or rude.

Also do you have any recommendations to blogs to follow on hq meta/analysis?

You're not rude at all! Rest assured, I would literally never turn down an opportunity to talk hq and kagehina.

So I started reading the manga specifically for the Nekoma match because it hadn’t been animated yet and I was impatient to know what happened. And it is without a doubt the best match in the series. Utterly nerve-wracking in the best way. I read it five times in one sitting type of good. 

The stakes are incomparably personal in this match for every character involved. Everyone's got something to prove and it shows up in how the intensity's ramped to 11 before the game even starts. Like Daichi and Kuroo end their respective pregame pep talks with "we're going to eat them alive".

 And it lives up to that anticipation! Whether it's Daichi scooping up all of Kuroo's serves or Lev stopping Hinata or Yaku and Noya competing to get the flashiest saves, every rally is insane. You barely have time to catch a breath. It also has some of the best scenes in the series, like Kenma finally caging Hinata, ch 298, the goddamn third tempo set, Inuoka coming back, etc.  I’m disappointed beyond words that we won’t be getting every minute detail of it animated the way it deserves to be. 

As for kagehina specifically in that match, I think I said something about this recently but I think it's a huge marker of how their relationship has grown since the series began. The way that Kenma, who not only is one of the most observant people in the series but also Hinata's best friend thinks Kageyama wouldn't want a Hinata that can't give 100% and then Kageyama proves him wrong by giving the ball to him anyway- it’s a huge change in attitude from his previous “I only toss to those who are necessary” mentality and shows how kagehina’s bond has strengthened since the beginning and how Kageyama himself has grown as a person. His third tempo sets, specifically the second 3rd tempo set is hands down my favorite kagehina moment in haikyuu!! 

This entire time, Hinata’s been more or less leading Kageyama along through speed and faith and raw athletic ability. Kageyama grumbles multiple times that “Hinata stole the ball” from him or that he had to consciously stop himself from giving the ball to Hinata or whatnot. Whether it be their first freak quick or the falling set or going minus tempo instead of first, Hinata’s been the one leading their moves. But here, Hinata can’t do that anymore and Kageyama “speed is everything” “I only toss to those who are necessary” Tobio opens up a path for him. A third tempo set makes no use of Hinata’s skills and still, Kageyama gives it to him because he trusts that Hinata will score even without speed and unpredictability on his side. And when he fails, Kageyama does it again. It’s the ultimate show of faith, Kageyama finally returning the trust that Hinata’s had in him since that very first “I’m here”. It’s Kageyama reminding him that as long as he’s here, Hinata is invincible. That it doesn’t matter if his wings are clipped because Kageyama will be there to help him fly even when Hinata can’t do it on his own.

Damn, i think he'd never been mistakenly feared before or having someone be kinda racist to what he is /j. Sure, he got mistaken as Error, usually by Inks, but that’s just it.

but in just cases that someone becomes not so friendly with him, he’ll be unfazed and just be not as nice. and will also increase his price if he’s selling items

but if you mean a “VIOLENT” kind of hostile, he’ll fight if he must

or if it’s not really worth his time and energy, he could just 

i mean, that is, if that certain hostile and fearful individual is already beyond reason. but yknow, no one’s got time to reason with someone who judges people by their looks

he’d just avoid em as much as possible, just like how sans dodges your attacks in-game lol. 

depends really, if it’s just a slight misunderstanding he’ll try to straighten things out but if it’s karen type, borderline racism beyond reason then you can bet your ass he’ll nope outta there. not dealing with that no sir.

when i think about it, there are no chances there would be anyone in my verse to be hostile towards anti under the reason that they believe he share sameness to error. 

outside my verse, i dont think there’s anyone, any creator would have their creations be hostile/fearful to anti.
