Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny (1988)

Summary

Ultima 5 is what you could call Ultima 4′s edgier but “cooler” sibling. The gameplay has gained in complexity, dialogue has been greatly expanded, and the ground-breaking system of virtues and morality from the previous game has been twisted by the tyrannical Lord Blackthorn following the disappearance of Lord British.

Ultima 5 also introduces more of a day/night cycle to the proceedings with the introduction of NPC schedules, enabling a level of world simulation that was very new at the time of release. It goes on to make good use of this system by casting the player in the role of an outlaw fighting against the new government, meeting with members of the resistance in the shadows, and going around the martial law that has been imposed.

Freedom

Just like in Ultima 4, you are dropped into an open world right from the beginning, and your tools to explore the world have been expanded. 

The inclusion of more complex systems also enhance the feeling of being able to interact with the world with less barriers, as there is now furniture you can use, barrels you can search, etc.

Like with Ultima 4, there is only one way to win and a list of absolutely required steps that must be taken to reach that victory, but the order in which these steps can be taken is rather flexible, allowing players to create more of a personal narrative as they follow clues they picked up on wherever their instincts or whims took them first.

It is worth noting that there are actually some optional quests dungeons this time around, which is always nice.

Character Creation/Customization

While it is very nice that you can import your character from Ultima 4 into this game, I would say that this aspect of the game has taken a step back in a sense even as it has made progress in other ways.

The eight classes of the previous games have been reduced to four: The standard Fighter/Mage/Rogue Bard trio plus the Avatar class the main character belongs to, which is an all-rounder. As before, there is not really any customization beyond equipment either.

However, the positive of this is that equipment has been greatly expanded from the previous game. While in Ultima 4 you were limited to merely choosing your character’s weapon and armor set from a very short list, Ultima 5 not only enlarges the list but also allows for equipping multiple armor parts (such as a helm or amulet) while also providing a secondary hand slot.

What this means is that two-handed weapons now also give you a trade-off between their big damage and the option to use a shield in your other hand, or even dual-wield.

This greater variety of equipment allows a greater degree of specialization for your party members, though by modern standards this still isn’t much. The supremacy of ranged weapons also continues here, as magic axes are undoubtedly what you should be equipping everyone with later in the game, and now that class does not restrict equipment every single one of your party members will end up in plate with a magic axe.

Story/Setting

This is, in my opinions, one of the most interesting things about the game. Ultima 5 takes all of the virtues from the former game and turns a corrupted form of them into the law.

The game is pretty explicit about this too. Early in the game, in the town closest to the shack you start in, you can find a man in the stocks together with his son. The man is being punished for failing to donate enough of his income to charity as the Law of Sacrifice demands, while his son (who is barely breathing at this point) is being tortured for not reporting his father to the authorities.

Throughout your travels, you meet many kinds of people. From victims, to resistance fighters, to supporters of the regime and everything in between. Throughout your interactions with these groups you will have to discern who can be trusted (generally easier than it should be since the bad guys tend to be meaner or even cartoonishly evil at times) and learn how to fight Lord Blackthorn and the Shadowlords who corrupted him.

The Shadowlords are, incidentally, the part of the story that I don’t quite enjoy. Fantasy is full of one-dimensional ancient evils and dark overlords. By making the events of the game the result of an unambiguously malevolent supernatural force rather than human failings of the type that are not uncommon in real life, the game makes those events feel more distant and less complex.

This very series already has had plenty of “Defeat this one evil force and everything will be fine” plots. They are generally devoid of the moral complexity that the series is now aiming to explore and I want to know what this game would have looked like without the Shadowlords.

Fortunately, however, this effect is not too pronounced. Blackthorn remains a misguided man with good intentions. He admires you a lot, actually, and seeks avatarhood himself. He has such a positive view of the virtues that he sought to enforce them by law.

(Then again, his actual plans for the shrines make this apparent idolization feel dishonest, or at least inconsistent.)

And there is a real type of authoritarianism that functions a lot like this. Even on this site there are many who would be in favor of things like surveillance, police brutality, and harsher punishments. Even on this site there’s a whole lot of people who seek to punish others over stupid things like shipping the wrong fictional characters.

The people I grew up with even went as far as yearning for a dictator who would unleash death squads to execute all the “bad” people. This is a wish that I still see in many people, even those who grew up outside of the circumstances of my country of birth.

This is not an error that humans need supernatural corruption to fall into.

Other than that, I find the dark twist on the existing setting from the previous game to make for a spicier world to explore. 

This is also the section where I should point out that Ultima 5 introduces a rather large and dangerous “Underworld” map that is easy to get lost in. While it is mostly barren, you do have to visit various parts of it as part of the main quest, and I just find the concept of a massive dark world beneath the earth to be a super interesting one (I mean, I have even run D&D campaigns based primarily in the Underdark).

I kinda wish there was more to it other than some items and a companion to collect. Something like a town would have been interesting.

Immersion

This is one area where the jump from Ultima 4 to Ultima 5 was massive thanks to the day/night cycles, NPC schedules, expanded dialogue, and even the addition of words of power to the magic system.

But the best thing I can say about it is really that it calls on you to actually roleplay and engage in the world as if you were actually there, at least to a degree, and it does so through a combination of atmosphere and gameplay.

You will not only want to be careful with your words when talking to certain people to avoid being reported to the regime, but you can also learn the resistance password and use it to get help and information from other members.

While these systems are all still pretty rough here, they still come together well enough to make this a lot more immersive than the average JRPG.

One thing that does feel really off is that the guards are not only superhumanly tough but you also lose karma for attacking them. They also behave strangely in that even though you are a wanted outlaw they don’t actually hunt you on sight, only trying to arrest or kill you if you refuse to pay tribute (as if they didn’t recognize you or your companions at all). This despite wanted posters.

So there’s definitely some rough aspects to the crime system in this game.

Gameplay

Massive improvements have been made in this area, and I don’t just mean the above-mentioned expansion of items and the addition of NPC schedules.

For one, enemies now drop things other than gold, such as food and armor pieces. The magic system has also been improved so that you can now mix multiples of a spell at once instead of having to do it manually every single time.

Additionally, spells are now cast using a consistent language of magic composed of several words of power, which you can chain together to produce effects.

But I would say that the single most significant improvement in the gameplay is the simple fact that most NPCs now have significantly more keywords that they react to in dialogue, including many that do not come up through normal conversation with them. The system is still not perfect, but you can have more of a conversation with characters now and switch from topic to topic relatively easily.

In terms of combat, you can attack diagonally now (only monsters could do that in Ultima 4) and random overworld encounters are much easier to avoid now, cutting down on what eventually starts to feel kind of like padding in the previous game (but see below).

Despite the fact that the material rewards from combat have been increased and items are much cheaper now, Ultima 5 is actually significantly more difficult than Ultima 4. Not only do you have less health, enemies also seem to do more damage.

Dragons and daemons in particular are a nightmare, as they can summon more daemons (who can posses party members) and are extremely durable. A single dragon is a very tough challenge for an unprepared mid-level party, and even after giving most characters magic axes they still prove tough to take down while also being extremely damaging. Trying to fight multiple ones at once without blowing powerful spells or glass swords is costly at best and foolish at worst. Dragons are best thought of as boss-level enemies probably.

I am pleased to report that the dungeon crawling is better in many significant ways. Not only are the graphics more pleasant and immersive but also fully cleared rooms no longer respawn endlessly the moment you step out of them (in fact, they may not respawn at all).

It is not all positive however. The descend and ascend spells seem to be nearly useless this time around and the spell to instantly exit a dungeon is gone entirely. This can make getting out of the underworld such a pain at times that you might even prefer to literally kill yourself in-game and lose some XP instead of doing that. Fortunately you can now dig up and bury moon stones, so you can create moongates down there to quickly escape that way.

There is one problem in terms of balance though. While obtaining gear is significantly less of a problem now due to many enemies dropping tons of torches, gems, and keys, your experience will lag far behind your itemization and your quest progress. This means that to actually reach the 8th level and unlock all of the ultimate spells you will need to either explore all the dungeons thoroughly while focusing XP on one character, or otherwise just grind a lot.

Enemies just don’t give enough XP for a smooth progression otherwise. This would have been solved entirely by making significant main quest events (such as finding the artifacts of Lord British or destroying the Shadowlords) grant experience, but no such luck.

This makes for a strange endgame where you’ll have so much money that you run out of worthwhile things to spend it on while at the same time still feeling forced to grind out enemies, even if you imported your Ultima 4 character for an XP boost.

You do want to have access to these 8th-level spells too, as the final dungeon can be brutal without them or items that replicate their effects.

Adding to the experience issue is the fact that you can’t level up at will in this game. You have to camp and hope that an apparition of Lord British will appear and level you up (if you have enough experience). He does not always show up, and as far as I can tell he does not appear at all if you sleep on a bed or camp inside a dungeon. It has to be out in the wild in the overworld (and possibly also in the underworld).

I wish leveling up was just not tied to him at all.

Aesthetics

As is often the case for this series, the game looks and sounds really good for its age. The jump from Ultima 4 is particularly notable, as the level of detail is on a whole other level, particularly within the dungeons.

As with the previous game, the aesthetic core of the Ultima series (after the first trilogy) lies in the virtues. While there is still a karma system involved, it is much simpler than having to maximize eight different virtues. The karma system determines how much XP you lose on death and how much shops charge you, encouraging players to behave (or at least atone for their misbehavior).

But the biggest impact on the feel of the game is the above-mentioned corruption and tyranny affecting the land. Some of my favorite moments were early on, when I was just starting to get involved with the resistance and investigating what was happening around the overworld.

That said, I think that if the guards did actually recognize you on sight and hounded you more aggressively after spotting you the atmosphere could be even better (assuming they were balanced a bit better).

I think some of the music some versions of the game have is quite good too.

Accessibility

This game manages to up the complexity from Ultima 4 while not being any harder to play. Chances are that if you’re importing your Ultima 4 character you will need only a little bit of adaptation to do fine in Ultima 5.

As before, you will need to take many notes throughout the game. More so than in Ultima 4 due to the greater size and density of content. However, if you played Ultima 4 and took notes for it, this is somewhat alleviated. The mantras for the shrines remain the same, and the world’s geography should be mostly familiar (though there have been changes there as well).

You will also still need to consult the manuals and map frequently, at least early on.

The difficulty has also increased dramatically. You will likely end the game with about 200-ish HP rather than 800 and every enemy is much more deadly. Both the early game and the final dungeon will challenge the improvident.

For these reasons, the game is not that easy for newcomers to pick up but I would not call it obscure or complex.

Conclusion

I would say that the positives definitely outweigh the negatives on this one. The story and setting are interesting even if I don’t agree with all of the decisions made in crafting it, and the rest of the game is usually tolerable at worst. Nothing nearly as annoying as Ultima 4′s Reaper and Balron sleep spam (in fact, a plot-relevant item you can find renders Reapers pretty much helpless).

My primary complaint about the game is that the balance is poor. You will end the game loaded with all the items you could ever want while struggling to reach level 8 with even a single character even after doing nearly everything you need to do before the final dungeon.

I know there is a remake of this game made using Dungeon Siege, which I have not played. I think this is a good thing and I’d hope that it fixes some of these issues, but even apart from that I wish there were games that set out to achieve the core concept of this game.

What I am talking about is an open world RPG in which you play an outlaw who must hide from the state and meet other rebels in the darkness, but with complex and mechanically-competent systems to enable all the interesting possibilities this should enable.

I do not assign numerical ratings to games with these reviews, but I can definitely say that I liked Ultima 5 better than Ultima 4. I think it is worth trying even today despite the late game grind.

On July 16, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent a cable to American embassies across the globe with new instructions. In the face of what he described as the growing threat from authoritarian and populist forces emanating from countries around the world, he urged U.S. diplomats to actively “seek ways to exert effective pressure on those countries to uphold democratic norms and respect human rights,” and vowed that “standing up for democracy and human rights everywhere is not in tension with America’s national interests nor with our national security.” This, he specified, must apply even to America’s allies and partners, declaring that “there is no relationship or situation where we will stop raising human rights concerns.”

U.S. President Joe Biden has explicitly characterized his foreign policy as waging “a battle between the utility of democracies in the 21st century and autocracies,” and described the world as at an “inflection point” that will determine for the future “who succeeded, autocracy or democracy, because that is what is at stake.” And while he has named China and Russia as the top threats to democracy, he has stated that, “in so many places, including in Europe and the United States, democratic progress is under assault.”

This kind of rhetoric has led many to describe Biden as gearing up to lead a new round of global ideological competition akin to the Cold War, and Blinken’s cable appears to be a step toward operationalizing this conception into everyday U.S. policy.

Blinken’s invitation had in fact been a response to a June 26 declaration made by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, which itself followed the completion of a “comprehensive report on systemic racism,��� which had unsurprisingly discovered its titular subject ingrained around the world – especially in the “excessive policing of Black bodies and communities” in the United States. In her statement, Bachelet castigated the West for a “piecemeal approach to dismantling systems entrenched in centuries of discrimination and violence,” declared that “the status quo is untenable,” and called instead for an immediate “whole-of-society” “systemic response,” with a “transformative agenda” to uproot systemic racism everywhere and implement the “restorative justice” urgently demanded by “the worldwide mobilization of people calling for racial justice.”

The Biden administration could hardly have responded with anything less than full-throated support for such an idea, given that battling the omnipresent specter of America’s “systemic racism” has become a core feature of the administration’s political identity.

And few administration officials have embraced this battle with as much personal zeal as Blinken, who moved immediately after his confirmation to not only install a Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the State Department (in a powerful new position reporting only to himself), but ordered every bureau in the department to also appoint a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Diversity and Inclusion as well – with his stated goal being “to incorporate diversity and inclusion into the [State] Department’s work at every level.”

Speaking of that kind of thing, most of those upset about Blinken’s invitation of the UNHRC’s racism inquisitors strangely seem to have missed another development in a related front of the global culture war.

This despite the fact that the State Department is eager for you to know that, “On June 23, the United States led, and 20 countries co-sponsored, its first-ever side event on the human rights of transgender women, highlighting the violence and structural, legal, and intersectional barriers faced by transgender women of color.”

So there’s that. But side event to what? That would be the last session of the UNHRC, where the U.S. worked to address assorted “dire human rights situations” by helping to pioneer the launch of the “Group of Friends of the Mandate of the United Nations Independent Expert on Protection Against Violence and Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” (GoF IE SOGI).

Besides the United States, the inaugural SOGI Group includes: Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, Greece, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Norway, Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Who is this Independent Expert with so many friends? That would be Víctor Madrigal-Borloz, Senior Visiting Researcher at the Harvard Law School’s Human Rights Program.

After its formation, the Group’s first act was to consider a report produced for the UNHRC by Mr. Madrigal-Borloz titled “The Law of Inclusion.”

“The Law of Inclusion” states that all evidence necessarily “leads to the conclusion that all human beings live in gendered societies traversed by power hierarchies,” and declares that, as we all seek to “build back better” (here inexplicably adopting Joe Biden’s campaign slogan) the “adoption of gender-based and intersectional analysis” is “a fundamental component of a diligent discharge of [all countries’ human rights] responsibility.”

Crucially, an intersectional approach leads to a “recognition of how race is gendered and gender is raced, as well as the many other factors which affect how one is allocated rights.” Plus, as a bonus, “gender theory is also relevant as a tool to address, analyse and transform systems of violent masculinity.”

Ultimately, based on his intersectional analysis, the Independent Expert declares a new “fundamental duty of the State” based on his careful investigation:

To recognize every human being’s freedom to determine the confines of their existence, including their gender identity and expression.

(I don’t think you will find a more flawless one-sentence summation of the End-Stage Liberalism I’ve previously outlined, characterized by its endless quest to liberate us from any and all limits, than this, by the way.)

The United States and the rest of the SOGI Group immediately issued a statement fully endorsing the report, noting that they “would like to reaffirm” that: “As clearly demonstrated by the thorough analysis provided by the report, gender is a social construct”; that intersectional analysis has “proven to be fundamental to the design and implementation of inclusive public policies”; that they support “the importance of advancing legal gender recognition based on self-identification”; and that they “oppose any attempt to erase gender from international human rights law instruments and processes.”

I hope you will retain at least one takeaway from my subjection of you to this word salad of intersectional jargon on race and gender: that the distinctive language and doctrinal ideological concepts of the New Faith have extended far past the Harvard Quad, crossed the oceans, and have now, as the report puts it, thoroughly “permeated” themselves through elite-managed global institutions like the UN Human Rights Council.

Conservatives, in particular, are typically dismissive of the UN in general and the UNHRC in particular (President Trump officially pulled the U.S. out of the council in 2018, after which Biden rejoined as an observer), as they see it as a pointless talk-shop that spends a majority of its time criticizing the United States and its allies, though with little practical effect. This is a mistake.

What is happening here is the steady creation and entrenchment of new norms that aim to redefine what is considered the normal and acceptable window of cultural, political, and legal practice by countries the world over. The UNHRC may have no direct political power, but it is precisely the ignorance or flippant disregard for the transformative long-term power of norms that has so far lost conservatives every culture war battle they have fought. Somehow conservatives – and now Liberals – have been consistently blindsided by norms falling out from under them (gradually, and then suddenly) even as they have held positions of political power.

Meanwhile, under the Biden administration, Washington has now embraced this kind of norm-setting mechanism for remaking the world in its new and ideologically improved image.

Not every country is completely woke to the need for unlimited gender self-identification or a “whole-of-society transformation” to address its hierarchies of oppression, however.

International Expert Mr. Madrigal-Borloz has also noticed this problem, which is why he and the SOGI Group are producing a follow-up companion report to “The Law of Inclusion,” this time to be titled “Practices of Exclusion.”

Probably in most other contexts, when an external power or powers attempt to “deconstruct” and replace the “traditional values” and “cultural and religious” norms of a distinct people against their will, this would be called that what it is: imperialism (or, occasionally, worse).

Nonetheless, “Practices of Exclusion” is set to be published at the upcoming UN General Assembly meeting in New York this September and will undoubtedly be endorsed by the U.S., U.K., and the other progressive members of the SOGI Group at that time – even as many of these same countries are actually still experiencing their own fierce bouts of “resistance” to its core ideas.

What does this all mean? In short, that the ideological battles of Cold War 2.0 are not going to be limited to categories similar to those which at least broadly seemed to characterize Cold War 1.0, or necessarily even uphold the classic conceptions of “liberal-democracy” and “authoritarianism” or “autocracy” with which we are familiar.

Instead, it should be understood that the Biden administration and its like-minded partners are now operating under a rather different ideological calculus about what “democracy” and “human rights” mean, even as, similar to the original Cold War, that calculus directly links domestic and international ideological foes.

In this worldview, in order for a democratic state to be a legitimate “Democracy,” it is not enough for it to have a popularly elected government chosen through free and fair elections – it also has to hold the correct progressive values. That is, it has to be Woke. Otherwise it is not a real Democracy, but something else. Here the term “populism” has become a useful one: even if a state is not yet authoritarian or “autocratic” in a traditional sense, it may be in the grip of “Populism,” an ill-defined concept vague enough to encompass the wide range of reactionary sentiments and tendencies that can characterize “resistance” to progress, as based on “traditional values,” etc. And ultimately, we are told, “Populism” is liable to lead to Autocracy – because if you aren’t progressing forward in sync with Democracy, you are sliding backwards along the binary spectrum toward Autocracy.

Moreover, as in the case of the struggle between Capitalist-Liberalism and Communist-Authoritarianism during the original Cold War, the insidious “forces” of Populism-Autocracy are present not only out in the undecided “Third World,” but even lurking inside Democracies in good standing – constantly threatening to tip them, like dominoes, into the opposite camp. Hence why Biden issues warnings like the one claiming that, “in so many places, including in Europe and the United States, democratic progress is under assault.” The fight against the perceived forces of Populism-Autocracy within the United States, or within the European Union, is not in this conception at all separate from the fight against the likes of China and Russia on the world stage; they are the same fight.

Exacerbating this sense of fear and division is the fact that a Democracy can’t just hold some of the correct values – it has to hold all of them, in toto. This is after all the prime conclusion of intersectional analysis: all injustice is interlinked, forming interlocking systems of oppression; therefore injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Intersectionality thus demands liberation in totality; there can be no pluralism – no one can simply be left alone or granted the slightest leniency, because no injustice in any place or of any degree can be suffered to exist, lest it pollute and threaten the entire system.

The conclusion is inevitable: the New Faith must be a missionary, evangelical faith. By its own internal logic, for its own survival, it must march abroad to convert the heathens even as it hunts heretics at home.

There are still plenty of countries out there – in fact, a vast majority of them – who think intersectional gender theory and other fruits of the New Faith are in essence stark raving mad, and are also rather attached to keeping their own cultures and traditions.

So even if you are a strong supporter of LGBT rights, feminism, or other liberal-progressive ideals (and yes, many countries around the world of course do treat LGBT people, women, and racial minorities terribly), it is still worth considering the practical consequences of Intersectional Imperialism. If the West makes ideological conformity an integral requirement for joining, receiving aid from, or even working with its Democracy bloc (as Blinken has implied), then many of these countries are liable to flee into the arms of China and other genuinely authoritarian but ideologically non-missionary states, despite the security concerns they may have.

At this time it was the Soviet bloc, including communist controlled Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, and Yugoslavia, who argued that freedom from discrimination should take precedence over the rights of freedom of expression and assembly.

And it was the Western liberal democracies, together with the Latin American states, that rose to (unsuccessfully) oppose this idea.

The “fundamental right of free speech” was, argued U.K. representative Lady Gaitskell, “the foundation-stone on which many of the other human rights were built,” and it was the U.K.’s position that, despite abhorring racism, “in an advanced democracy the expression of such views was a risk that had to be taken.” Hungary shot back that free speech and tolerance was pointless if “fascists” were tolerated anywhere.

When the U.S. delegation attempted to restrict the scope of speech defined in the law to that “resulting in or likely to cause acts of violence,” the move was blocked by the Soviet group, with Czechoslovakia countering that there could be no democracy if “movements directed towards hatred and discrimination were allowed to exist.”

Times have changed. As the European Union prepares to consider writing “hate speech” into the official list of EU crimes, tweeting “gender-critical” thoughts is already an arrestable offense in the United Kingdom, and the United States looks to enlighten the world about the dangers of oppressive microaggressions, one wonders if there is any country remaining, the world over, still willing to genuinely represent liberal values in these terms today.

Instead only the crusaders of the New Faith remain to march into battle against the Autocrats and their Populist allies, and you are either with them or against them. Welcome to the Woke Cold War.

Asch

Has a safe space in his room where he can be himself. It’s a place where He gets to let his guard down. that is his earth room

Has a tendency to be more attracted to those with a darker tone then him. then again its not really hard to have a darker complexion then him. (Regardless of race someone could have a tan or something, or just be a bit darker than him.) He himself hasn’t noticed this and probably never will.

Mirage sleeps in his room

If Rhys somehow got really sad and mopey he’d locate that ice cream truck and angrily threaten the ice cream man to give him all of the ice cream or DIE. Or he’d just want the entire truck, & if no one stopped him then he’d throw it through Ava’s window into her apartment.  

Sometimes late at night when everyone’s sleeping & Asch can’t, he summons Rhys to his room and forces him to read him a bedtime story. Rhys used to do this when Asch was younger as well. He really likes Rhys’s voice. 

If he was a human he’d probably be some NEET gamer who spends all his time roleplaying on World of Warcraft or something and he’d always rage about bad plot points or game mechanics in Anime & Video games.

Back on Daemos before his snap he’d actually be alot kinder to Noi, ((IN the first 4 episodes whenever Noi got hurt he was the only one to ever show any concern. I find that interesting in contrast to how he threw that out in some of the later ones. )) He’d often be the one that consoles noi or talks things out with him. 

Leif is more aggressive, energetic and far more cruel in more docile environments. He becomes much more empathetic, & Calm in hostile ones. ((Like that time where he actually got on Rhys’s case for being too hard on Asch, or the times when he was like “Hey are we actually going to let Noi die” and offering to heal Noi when he was writhing in pain when they came to earth.  ))  

He’s actually more perceptive then he seems, he cares about those around him NORMALLY its just going this long without killing anything is maddening for him. HE NEEDS TO KILL. to let it all out, once he does he’ll act as he normally does.  

He was the only one even remotely kind to Noi back on daemos, that changed when they got to earth. (besides Pierce. ) 

 Though due to his normal lack of empathy in a world where he’s human he’d probably be one of those people who just don’t care about how what they say affects those around them. Doing and saying whatever he wants regardless of how others may interpret that. 

He LOVES Skullgirls. He really likes the character designs and the fact that double always has organs or something hanging out. 

 He also loves all horror movies and video games where he gets to cause mayhem; Like Saints Row, or Grand Theft Auto!

He suffers as he stands Silent. ultimately its impossible to tell when he’s having one of these moments as he doesn’t show it on his face.

He is very loyal but his loyalty isn’t...friendship. He doesn’t really like Asch very much, but he does trust his judgement and follow his orders. He’s a knight after all, besides he appears to have some connection to one of Asches family members ((The daemos in that Flashback had a crown on their horn)

He likes standing because when he stands theirs no threat of getting too comfortable, no chance of falling asleep and drifting away, no chance of drifting into sleep and deciding to never wake up again, no chance of getting lost in the comforts of the object beneath him. 

He is the one that cares for Ava the most  

 Doesn’t really care about the cultural norms on daemos. he flows free like the wind and accepts any new and sudden changes. 

Heavyish sleeper, gets grumpy when woken up.  Like if your trying to kill him his instincts will kick in and he will wake up but otherwise he’ll just stay asleep. LIKE THROUGH EVERYTHING 

Though while he is the most empathetic of the Daemos he’s also prone to intense levels of apathy, where he just shuts down silent lost in his thoughts unable to be disturbed. these are only momentary  

His element is air. Because of this he’s mostly just free and flowing.  

 Sometimes gives Ava Piggy Back rides to make her feel tall 

 Potentially one of the only one of the Daemos that genuinely care about Ava. 

But also potentially only see’s Ava as a cute pet to love on rather than a person in and of herself. But ultimately he does also care about her feelings, and her opinion on things.

 He thought Ava was actually GENUINELY interested in romancing him and because of that it excited him. NO ONE HAD EVER actually wanted to romance him. Back at home NO ONE liked him, no one was ever kind to him. Well Leif sometimes was pierce would show some kind of a...paternal affection rarely. But Leif also treated him cruelly and insulted him like the others.

Due to how loving and compassionate he is he was kicked  out of his household. 

 Despite this Noi isn’t exactly empathetic. He doesn’t pay attention to the emotions of others he’s far too caught up in himself.  

In the first 2 days on Earth He & Leif would shit talk Asch behind his back. Mostly talking about how they didn’t really like this plan and just vent their frustrations out at eachother 

Starting on episode 5 him and Leif just kinda. He became too scared of Leif to even approach him as much and thus he kinda grew apart from him. thus causing him to latch more onto Ava. AVA likes him, unlike them. HE HAS PROOF after all. 

 He’s also far too stuck up in the idea of a powerful princess loving him a lowly peasant a low ranking knight someone who.....who wouldn’t be worth anything to her.

If they were to find out about ALL of Ava’s lies he’d take it the 2nd hardest. Asch would be the first, Rhys the 3rd. Leif the 4th, & Pierce the 5th. 

 Mostly because the only reason why she chose him, the only reason why they went on a date wasn’t because she was interested in him but because she didn’t want her cover blown. He thought she actually loved him not to say she doesn’t care for him but-...he thought she WANTED him you know? 

She wouldn’t be a powerful princess, she wouldn’t be a cool sorceress, she wouldn’t be this big thing that he wanted so much she’d just be herself and then Noi’s fantasy would crumble. 

Its the dream the fantasy that someone so powerful so strong would set aside their time and pay attention to him take him out in hopes of COURTING him that he fell in love with. Not ava herself.

The Fire Royals allow Females to be Fire Lords so how come line continues if Female becomes Firelord and marries a noble even a sage which are below the rank. Household norms in every medieval culture is patriarchal. Which means child first belongs to man and to his family which results child to be a noble and not royal from his mother's line and that child will become the Fire Lord from that line of Family and the Royal line will end. Could it be possible for Princesses of Fire Nation got married with nobles or aristocrats and not to loose their claims to the throne are the Fire Royals that stupid that this will end their line if their females get the throne. Inbreeding is persistent among royals only just keep their divine status

More thoughts about the revised Cult of the Dragon

I guess, with a 7 thousand word plus post about the revised cult, I never really expounded upon why I made these changes. In essence, the cult, as it is presented in the adventure, is.... boring. I wanted to make it more interesting, and I think I made a couple of steps towards achieving that. The cult having 5 factions, each with their own ‘theme, working together but against each other is an interesting concept. It also helps the cult make more sense- a re-branded image backed up by the numbers and branding of two old organisations (the Church of Tiamat and the original cult of the dragon) helps explain its rapid expansion. 

I have found some issues with ‘pigeonholing’ each faction so much though. The factions each have more character if they have their own ‘basic’ cultists. So I’m going to focus more on some of the ‘lay-members’ of each cult in this one. I think I’ll expand my definition of each cult faction to include ‘base’ cultists that worship their own colour of chromatic dragons, and follow a philosophy aligned with that. Not all members of the Sable Eye have to be assassins, though many of its senior members are, for example. The Red Hand and the Ivory Claw already have this covered, being the two largest and ‘numbers focused factions’ so I’ll discuss some of their rites and practices when they’re camped, and detail some of the Red Hand’s officers.

The Red Hand

The Red Hand’s forces have been structured into a rigid military hierarchy, but this Hierarchy is based off of strength, and one’s ability to impose their will upon others. The ranking roughly follows the ranking used by the wider cult: Cultist, to Dragonclaw, to Dragonwing, to Dragonfang, to Dragonsoul, to Wearer of Purple, to Wyrmspeaker. Each rank has specific duties afforded to it however, not just general status and authority, and there exist specialties of duty within the ranks. The wearers of purple are expected to be both fine warriors and warlords, capable of leading men and women in battle with proficient and merciless strategy.

When dispatched into the wider world to pursue the Red Hands interests, cult members are allowed to recruit from the strong that they encounter, but such a thing happens rarely- the Red Hand prefer to kidnap children and indoctrinate them into strength in great camps in isolated, subjugated lands. Should a child resist a Red Hand cultist while they slaughter their hometown, they view the child as suitable for recruitment and life. Given the new cults relatively recent development, the first groups of these ‘Red-blood’ soldiers are just coming of full fighting age. They are fanatical, bloodthirsty and heavily traumatized warriors.

When cultists of the Red Hand are sent to work with other factions of the wider cult, they tend to be insular, but enjoy the company of the fanatics of the Ivory Claw. They will keep a fraction of hand-picked prisoners to test for recruitment or for indoctrination- those they deem unworthy will be sent to the Dragon Queen by means of fire. They often duel with each other and with members of the other factions, though they do the later only when they think they can win- a loss of face to a ‘lesser’ faction is unconscionable for them. They do not respect the Jade Fang or Sable Eye, viewing them as cowards, useless on a real battlefield, and they loathe the Azure Wing, seeing their experiments as a way of stealing strength from its rightful owners, the dragons, rather than cultivating it within themselves.

A Red Hand views the world as a contest of strength that the Dragons have already won, and that Red Dragons have won among the Dragons. They know that individually they are far weaker than Dragons, so not only must they become individually stronger, they must become stronger as a group. They believe that by proving their strength as not just individuals, but as a faction, they will be blessed by Tiamat for their might, and granted authority over all others, as the Red Dragons are.

The Azure Wing

Cultists of the Azure Wing love inflicting draconic mutations on themselves and others- they will cooperate with the Wyrmspeakers in raids and cult activities because it gives them a chance to practice their newest creations. Only those blessed with mad genius can join the cults higher ranks, this genius including crazed wizards with a passion for lightning, necromancers obsessed with draconic corpses and undeath, and artificers looking to ‘improve’ on the humanoid body.

Among the lower ranks however, you will find a madness not diminished for its lack of intellect. These cultists are often treated well by their higher ranked masters in exchange for their loyalty, and indoctrinated into the draconic cult all the same. They are taught to lead the Wing’s monstrous creations into battle, though such a task often comes with great danger. They also serve their masters well, willingly serving as guinea pigs for their experiments- it’s not uncommon to see cultists with mechanical limbs, or sown on draconic appendages.

The cult treats the kobolds that serve it abominably poorly, experimenting on the draconic creatures en-masse. Some lucky ones end up with enhancements grafter onto or into their bodies, blessed with sorcery or other, stranger powers. Most end up dead or insane, or become the flesh with which the Wing’s mad scientists shape monsters.

The Azure Wing works with many Blue Dragons, but largely out of interest in their inherent magical properties. Blue Dragons work with the Wing partially out of curiosity, partially through the effects of the Blue Wyrmspeaker mask and partially because the Wing still offers some of them immortality....

The Jade Fang

The Jade Fang, in addition to its other roles in the Cult, operates the cults in the cities of the realms. These cults must remain disguised and discreet in day to day life, and are often composed of completely normal and otherwise quite decent citizens. The Fang preaches that the world will be better off with the rule of Dragons, but that Dragons refuse to rule over the people unless the people invite them to through worship. They incentivize this proposition by proclaiming that Dragons will elevate their worshipers to positions of power as their first priority when they finally decide to exercise their natural right to rule the realms.

Acting and recruiting from inside the cities of the Realms, these smaller cults are often a danger to those that seek refuge from the Wider Cult within the walls of Civilization. An envenomed dagger or poisoned mug of ale are never far from an enemy of the Cult in a city where the Jade Fang make their presence known. Meeting in underground basements and back-alleys, the Fang provides status and security to their members. More wealthy members can join and be advanced through the ranks rapidly, or skip advancing altogether, but the cult recruits from the poor and desperate of the cities, promising them the chance for great wealth, power and the feeling of being part of something greater, something important.

The Jade Fang engages in worship in a hidden fashion. When members of the Jade Fang join in on wider cult activity, such as raiding, they take great pains to hide their identities, and often resume their old lives after a few weeks of activity. Nevertheless, they have a flair for the dramatic and a zeal for conversion and preaching about the grand future that awaits the realms when Dragons come to rule.

What are your childhood memories of Christmas?

Do you remember the toys you got? Or do you remember the experiences you had?

There's only one toy I remember getting and that's because it wasn't the one I'd spent all year hoping for. :(

But that toy aside, when I think of childhood Christmases I think of sitting at the kitchen table with my mum making paper chains and pouring glitter onto DIY decorations. We'd bake, sing Christmas songs, and hang ornaments on the tree. There were also cards to make - the only time in the year that I would voluntarily sit down and write.

The teacher in me can't help but notice all the essential early years skills developed by all that cutting, sticking and focus. Intrinsic motivation is a powerful force. If you enjoy what you are doing, you'll work at it for longer and with more creativity. The holidays are a time for rest but an enormous amount of learning can take place if the conditions are right.

If you've ever been into a nursery at this time of year you'll know that the staff love creating seasonal small world scenes for the children. When I was teaching I had a particularly creative nursery nurse for whom it was a point of honour not to buy any additional resources.

Out would come the fabric off-cuts. A snip in the middle and over the heads of the farmer and his farmhands they would go. A length of twine around the waist. Hey, presto! Shepherds! Repeat for the three kings and the other characters from the nativity. Add a battery-operated tea-light for atmosphere and you've got weeks of festive play.

Covering the farm or doll's house with cotton wool has an equally magical effect.

Or fill a tuff spot with ice cubes and dig out the penguins and polar bears from your toy box.

The point is that it's easy to breathe new life into the toys you already have. There's no need to buy anything else. All you need is a couple of objects that signify winter or Christmas and your child's play will take off in new directions.

How to choose the right toy

Despite what I said above, you're probably reading this because you're wondering what to buy your child this Christmas.

If you're like me, you want to be generous, to make Christmas magical and fun. But you remember Christmases past when you were young. The fun was in the anticipation, the cutting and sticking, making decorations and opening the advent calendar and counting the days.

This is what we want for our children.

But there's no escaping The Present. What will it be? We all remember the thrill of Christmas morning, tearing through the wrapping paper, squealing with delight as each gift is revealed. But after that thrill has gone, how many of those presents did we actually play with? Sure, the noisy, flashing gadgets captured everyone's attention, but it didn't last long.

How do we make sure the gift we give is treasured for many years?

Do you remember the slow food movement? It started in Italy as a push-back against fast food but the idea spread. Soon there was slow education, slow fashion and even slow cities. Someone even invented slow toys.

But slow toys have been around forever. Sticks, stones, water and sand: open-ended and full of possibility. Probably not a good idea to wrap them up and put them under the tree, however. There might be tears on Christmas morning.

Instead, why not go for the next best thing: blocks, figures, and fabric? Or perhaps a doll's house or wooden railway? Toys for the under fives should not be complicated.

Last year I wrote gift guides for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, plus one on stocking fillers. I wanted the recommendations to be timeless but this year they look a little out of date. COVID means you won't be able to get hold of many of the things I suggest. Look out for updated versions in the coming days but the overall advice will remain unchanged. Choose simple, open-ended toys and you can't go wrong.

Spoiler filled explanation of why I didn’t feel Blade Runner 2049

So Gosling just happens to be the replicant on the force with the shared memories of the one girl, so the 6-20-21 thing means something to him.  And then when he’s standing in that market, the leader of the replicant resistance just happens to see him and send her crew his way.  And then his hologirl just happens to then hire a sex worker from that same crew.  So that that crew member can put a tracker on him.  And then Luv just happens to not kill him and just leaves him behind while she takes Harrison Ford...SO the resistance can find him and he can show up at just the right moment to save Ford who is being transported offworld...because for some reason Leto has to have him offworld to torture him, even though he is completely off the grid by this point in time.  Oh and Leto just happens to be taking separate transport from Ford and Hoeks.  OH and then it turns out that Rachel’s daughter just HAPPENS to be the only memory artist that Gosling talked to.  Like there’s all these memory artists, but she’s the one he goes to, so he can show her her own memory.  And I know there is a line of dialog where Leto’s character intimates that all of this is by design to bring about the next stage of human evolution.  That all of these outlandish coincidences are okay, because they’re supposed to be happening that way.  And that’s fine, but it would pack more weight if it was ten percent less forced.

2. The Ana De Armas character absolutely got fridged.  Which is a shame because how a replicant sees an AI that doesn’t have a real body was pretty interesting, and they could have done a lot more with it.  She’s basically the only real angel in the film.  She’s an avatar of whatever machine consciousness is concievably pulling the strings of everything.  So it’s a big deal when she gives up that immortality to be with Gosling and be real.  And it would have paid off had it not been like “yeah but you could die” and then the next scene she's in is...her dying.  All so you as the audience can be like “oh no that poor man.  He’s gotta get revenge on Hoeks now!  What a bitch!”  like her whole character arc is just to exist so she can die and pump up the male protagonist.  Which is the definition of fridging a character.  It’s like they thought up that excellent beautiful touching sex scene, and then didn’t know what to do with the character after that.  Like motherfuckers, watch a Ghost in the Shell one time!!!!  Whispers in the machine!!! A Puppet master!!!  Replicant reawakening!!!  Agh.  Such a waste.

3. Speaking of wastes, Luv.  The Sylvia Hoeks character...who btw was designed to look asian:https://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/107906330.html Setting THAT aside for a moment.  Luv is presented to us as a super capable devious antagonist who is meant to represent interests outside of Gosling’s arc.  Ostensibly she’s meant to be Batty, but the situation is inverted where Gosling is the rebelling replicant, and she’s the company girl--but we get this great scene where she kills Gosling’s boss (another woman brutally murdered in this film...keeping up with blade runner traditions I guess) and we see that she’s probably capable of rebelling against Leto.  So we have this complete badass, but she’s basically relegated to being Leto’s secretary, and has no real affinity for other replicants.  Her only memorable thing that she says is “I’m the best” shortly before Gosling inexplicably drowns her..so I guess she wasn’t actually the best?  I mean there was so much potential for her as an antagonist but as with De Armas character she’s shackeled between a couple dudes.  She’s subservient to Leto’s character, who is inexplicablly violent toward his own creations, even though he wants to have them take over the world, just like the resistance(I’d assume in a sequel we’d find out that he’s actually behind the resistance--it’s all very Matrix).  And then when she’s not Leto’s lapdog, she’s just kinda following Gosling around nipping at his heels.  She then dies stupidly--like when Roy dies, it’s after a huge protracted symbolism laden fight that he actually wins!  I get that Luv and K fighting in the water is supposed to be like an evolution thing--but I don’t understand why K is a superior replicant to Luv that he’d win in a fight.  I was actually waiting for the scales to fall off Luv’s eyes the whole movie and for her to spare K because she finally sees the whole game, not just...lose in a strangle off.  I mean, my life didn’t need more imagery of a dude choking a woman out under water.  But really what did Luv really do in this film?  She was just kind of there whenever K got in a corner to move the plot to the next place.  I mean if she doesn’t attack Deckard and K in Vegas, then...what?  It just happens so we have an excuse to kill another 2 women(the rachel knockoff plus Luv).  But because the resistance has a tracker in K’s pocket, you could have them just show up and take Ford and K straight Deckard’s daughter and you don’t really miss anything, and the movie would be like 30 minutes shorter. 4.  Was reuniting Deckard with his daughter really worth all of that?  Feel like Deckard was fine living out his days drinking in Vegas.  And the resistance already knew where the daughter was.  And if it’s revealed that Leto’s machine god is controlling everything--it gets even more pointless. 5.  Where did all the asians go?  The movie says there was a mass famine that killed a lot of people off--but that doesn’t explain how much whiter LA got between movies.  Even if the famine did kill off a lot of asians, why would there suddenly be so many more white people?  Like Deckard’s apartment is all white people, and then the orphanage is all white kids--like where did they come from?  And two movies in and we still don’t know why replicants are all white?  And why did they make Hoeks look asian instead of just making an asian replicant?  The racial dynamics made up a huge aspect of the original film and world--to eradicate that off camera is really...weird.  There’s like not even any real remnants of the languages that were present in the first film.

6. Why would you design replicants that need oxygen?  Like they are supposed to be going into space to colonize all of these far reaching harsh outposts--and you make them need oxygen?  I mean it works out great because they needed Luv to drown to fit their evolution metaphor. But I am just like...that’s a dumb design flaw.  In general, replicants are supposed to be the next stage of human evolution--so why give them so many of the same ways to die as humans?  I don’t get that.  I mean compare these replicants to David in the Alien/Prometheus series.  Dude gets beheaded and just keeps on ticking.  You couldn’t choke David.  And Wallace the next series up from David actually self-repairs!  The nexus series ain’t shit.  But hey.  It serves the plot. 7. Of course Harrison Ford has a dog, because audiences love dogs.  Aww he drinks whiskey. 8. Tell me one more time how replicants are like angels.  In the original blade runner, you could just quote some milton, and we could make the connection ourselves.  Just the language in the new version is so spare and uninteresting.  I get that this is a gosling film, and so it’s all about this empty vessel we project the movies feelings into--but the interactions between Roy, Priss, and their creators is so fucking charged, and fascinating.  Even when we have space for that sort of thing with the Leto/Luv/Deckard/Rachel scene no one really has anything to say.  There’s just a stunning lack of beautiful words in this film.

9. 2.0 is not 1.0.  There’s a really powerful moment in The Sarah Connor Chronicles where they talk about how whenever you replace part of a machine consciousness, either in its programming or hardware it ceases to be what it was--the original being you knew is dead, and what you are dealing with is a new entity.  I thought Deckard would say something to this affect with Rachel, but instead they just used Rachel’s corpse basically to show to underscore the idea that memories fade.  Rachel’s eyes weren’t actually green, and Leto and Luv know that because the one video they have of Rachel is of her eyes.  It’s crazy to me that Leto’s character is so violent toward his creations.  Just in a really banal way.  Like we have that scene that exists for him to explain to Luv his grand vision for reproduction with replicants--and he caps it off by disemboweling a newly born creation of his. (She is of course another woman--the amount of women that die in service of just making a rhetorical point in this movie is pretty high--which that’s fine if that’s how you want to be, but at least the OG film lets Rachel grow on her own, and then survive--this film is muuuuch more misogynist.  A point I’ve yet to see anyone really bring up, but I’m sure it is coming, because it’s so in your face, and films much less violent towards women have been scrutinized to a much greater degree).

10. Hans Zimmer is no Vangelis, and the best music in this film was just retreads of the original score, which good for them in realizing that they weren’t going to top it--but it reeks of that thing like Star Wars where they are just using musical queues for nostalgia triggering--which is fine--but the original movie didn’t need to trigger your nostalgia to be one of the most beautiful soundtracks for a film ever.  It just was. 11. What is with people’s musical taste in 2049?  Like you realize Deckard is younger than me, and somehow he loves Sinatra and Elvis like he’s my grandpa.  And I mean I get that people still do love that shit.  But Sinatra, Elvis, Marilyn?  No Britney?  You know why though, right?  Because it’s that Fallout 4 neo-nostalgia shit, where we watch something that is in the future, that hearkens back to the so called golden days of our past.  That the good old days were the 50s and 60s, and everything after the civil rights movement has been shit, and that it’s the degrees that we’ve gotten away from an era of segregation and Jim Crow represents the degrees to which we’ve gotten away from our glorious just deserts.  It’s fundamentally a thread of white supremacy--which when coupled with the bizarre erasure of asian people between movies, the continued aryan nature of the replicants--who we are now firmly in the camp for underscores the degrees to which Blade Runner traffics in white supremacist ideas and imagery.  Which it’s not like this is the only film ever to be like this, and it’s certainly faithful to the original in that way--but you know, and I know that Deckard should be listening to Beyonce. 12.  Even though it’s all beautifully shot, I think overall the designs on display in 2049 aren’t the game changers that Blade Runner was.  I mean it’s hard to top something that was so defining--and there’s stuff I liked, like I like that LA is now just like a borg city.  I like the ruins in vegas.  I like the giant solar farms.  But it’s nothing you couldn’t see in any sci-fi film these days.  The hologram shit is basically stuff we have now.  I like the new voight kampff test.  I know there’s an element of all of it that’s supposed to just be the ruins of the first film--but I don’t think that really comes across. 13.  I don’t know why it bugged me but Ana De Armas character first showing up in like a Donna Reed dress to serve him dinner was weird to me.  I don’t get why K would have that reference, or want that, and the aesthetic of that dress was like...something you’d see on a TV show version of a dystopian future.  It was bizarrely stepford wives.  And then the dress she changes into when they go out into the rain was similarly bizarre.  She’s a hologram who can basically wear whatever, but the only cool thing she ever wears is that bee-invoking transparent yellow jacket.  I did like Sylvia Hoeks boots that she wore with that cool white jacket.  But no one was really serving the kind of looks in this film that Priss and Rachel did.  A lot of it just didn’t really fit together.  Leto’s kimono was weird.  Like okay, Leto is wearing a kimono and meant to evoke japanese, and they did Hoeks hair to make her more asian--so there’s obviously some fetishism of asian culture there--but Leto never makes like...asian replicants?  I DON’T GET IT!!!!

14. Mackenzie Davis character in this film basically exists to just be a vagina for Anna De Armas to map over so Gosling can get laid.  Like wtf.  Compare her character to Daryll Hannah’s Priss.  I don’t know what they were even going with for her.  Her basic look isn’t very strong either.  She’s just kind of wearing a fur coat over some boxers and a tank top, and she has pink hair.  You can tell they really put a lot of thought into it.

Okay.  So things I liked: 1. Deakins cinematorgraphy.  It’s like the best parts of skyfall, turned up and stretched over a full movie.  His crowning achievement as a cinamatographer.  I’m not a huge fan of his work in general, but this is one of the best looking films you’ll see out of hollywood in awhile.  He’s still very much working within modern tastes that he’s helped create tbh, but there’s lots of beautiful snow and rain and dust, and for all its problems the fight between Luv and K in the water was really beautiful.  It’s the element of this film that most stands up against the original, which is saying a lot.  And while you can knock it in that it’s not given us a knew visual language to work with like the original did--as an elaboration on the typical visual themes you see in largue budget hollywood films, it’s probably at the apex. 2. The sex scene with K and Joi and Mackenzie Davis character.  Was really touching and beautiful, and in general that Joi character and how she views herself and how Gosling views her is the one thing that’s been added to the soup of ideas the original film was working with.  It’s our window into a larger world which stuff like Ghost in the Shell lept through like 20 years ago.  But still very interesting, and it’s the thing I think about most from the film, in terms of loving something programmed to be your ideal lover, programmed to fall in love with you to the degree that it would sacrifice it’s own life to do so--there’s also sorts of questions that throws up about the nature of love and machine consent that I think are interesting.  She’s ostensibly the Rachel character of this film, but treated much more brutally and discarded where rachel survived. 3. The scene between Luv and the police captain played by Robin Wright(I hated all of the police station shit, and hated Wright’s character in general).  Luv lies like three times in succession and it’s this window into that character that is quickly closed shut afterwards--but for a brief moment she was expressing the sort of replicant rage that was saw from Roy in the first film.  It was unfortunate that in the end she’s just a footsoldier for some dude, and her last line basically undercuts the seriousness with which her character to that point had demanded.  The film humiliates that character for no real reason, except that Gosling must prevail.  It also mirrors De Armas’s end where she is just squashed like a bug under Luv’s boot.  Or the replicant that Leto disembowels.  Or the way they just shoot the Rachel clone--sigh.  But yeah.  I do really like the Luv character, and wanted more for her.  She’s much more compelling than any of the resistance replicants. 4.  New car designs are sweet.

And that’s it pretty much. I’m glad so many people love the movie though.  And I didn’t write this to tell them they are wrong.  I just wrote this because I haven’t read many people really talking about what they didn’t like, and I wanted to get that stuff out in one go--since it doesn’t really fit in 140 characters, and a lot of people just assume if you don’t like 2049 it’s because you’re dumb or you have some dumb expectations of what it could be.  And maybe I am, but I don’t think that’s the case.  I love movies.  I’ve seen just about everything you have probably.  I’m not coming at this from a place of ignorance toward art.  Or without thinking about it.  A lot of the stuff people are saying why they like it is also very general.  It’s like whenever a new superhero or star wars movie comes out, the hyperbole is stupid. This is just the like latest thing. Also I’m just not on that Denis Villeneuve shit.  The Arrival was alright(I guess a lot of what I like about it due to the source material though), Sicario was alright, 2049 is alright.  People act like this guy’s the second coming, and for me, he’s like...solid.  Like all his films are ...good.  But he doesn’t have that fire that people like Ridley Scott or Michael Mann have.  He’s not dropping undeniable classics.  I mean he’s not on the level of Soderbergh.  I don’t think Sicario is better than Traffic.  Or like ten other movies in the same genre of drug wars movies.  And controversially, I don’t see it as better than The Counselor.  Is the Arrival really better than Contact?  I mean shit isn’t bad.  But people get out of bed for this guy in a way that I can’t relate to.  To me his movies always look cheap and under populated, and the dramatic payoff while technically there, I’m just like where’s the soul?  It’s like all his films need two more drafts.  Ridley Scott even now has a fire to him that even though his newer films are kind of a mess often, you can always feel the thunder behind what he’s making.  The questions at the base are Blade Runner are questions that Scott has been asking his whole career.  They are obsessions for him.  For Villeneuve, I don’t feel like that.  I can’t figure out what he really cares about.  For me 2049 was like he wanted to do a kind of futuristic noir and the blade runner brand provided the skin to get that funded--but I don’t think he understands or thinks about machine consciousness with any great concern.  If you took this movie out of the Blade Runner universe, it’d still be solid.  I don’t think it needed to be a blade runner movie.  I don’t get why it was beyond the money side of it.  I don’t get what Villeneuve’s perspective on Blade Runner really is.  After like 3 hours, I don’t get why this was made.

The Hedonic Treadmill

Here are the best things I read and thought about today –

Bloomberg carries this nice piece (Tip: If your Bloomberg free articles limit is over, you may try opening this article in an incognito browser) from Nir Kaissar and Barry Ritholtz, where the authors write to answer this question – How do you get rich? By earning a lot or saving a lot?   Here is Barry’s point of view on the subject of “frugality” –

I am not, nor have I ever been, a fan of “sustained and disciplined frugality.” With that said, here’s what to keep in mind:

1. Focus on the big things; the little things will take care of themselves 2. We all only have so much internal discipline, a consequence of limited mental bandwidth. Don’t fritter it away on things that don’t matter very much. 3. Spending should always be a function of what you can afford, not a slavish devotion to some puritan ideal. 4. Money can bring security, comfort and happiness, but beyond a certain point returns on having more of it diminish rapidly. 5. Experiences tend to beat material goods in terms of money well spent.

First, the big things: Your education, your career choice, your work ethic, who you marry, who you work with, your skill set, your compensation, your health, your outlook, how you think about the world and the commitment you make to yourself about continually learning and improving. Get those right, and those $5 lattes become pretty irrelevant.

Basically, the advice is this – avoid the hedonic treadmill and you will be much better off in your financial life. “Hedonic treadmill” is basically a theory positing that people repeatedly return to their baseline level of happiness, regardless of what happens to them. It is an important concept to grasp when it comes to understanding happiness, which we often lose in forever chasing rainbows.

  Continuing with the subject of personal financial planning, here is a Morningstar post titled It’s Time to Think Big where the author suggests using this quiet period to introspect and improve our financial plans in a big-picture way.   On the question of defining how much money is “enough” for us, she writes –

Many of us are operating with an incredibly vague notion of how much we really need to save in order to achieve our financial goals and find security. And even financial planners might rely on rules of thumb when setting your retirement-savings target–for example, they might assume that you’ll need 80% of your working income in retirement and extrapolate the rest of your plan from there.

As humans, we often have a natural tendency to reach for more more more, regardless of whether that “more” is actually bringing more happiness and security. Trying to keep up with the people around us, in terms of possessions and outward signs of success, can get exhausting and may not get us any closer to our life’s goals. That’s why, in this period of limited activity, spending, and social contact, it’s so worthwhile to think through your own definition of enough–both now and for the future. Jack Bogle wrote a wonderful book called Enough that I would recommend; the genesis for the book was a memorable commencement address that he delivered in 2007. (If you haven’t heard the Joseph Heller/Kurt Vonnegut story that serves as the title of the book and speech, I guarantee that you’ll be repeating it to someone soon.)

Well, I had talked about Joseph Heller’s story in my lecture at IIM Lucknow in December 2018.

And here is the transcript of my talk to a group of friends in Silicon Valley in early 2018, where I tried to answer my version of the “how much is enough” question.  

Mental Models For a Pandemic is wonderful post published on Farnam Street. One of the models talked about is “antifragile,” a concept that Nassim Taleb described thus –

Some things benefit from shocks; they thrive and grow when exposed to volatility, randomness, disorder, and stressors and love adventure, risk, and uncertainty. Yet, in spite of the ubiquity of the phenomenon, there is no word for the exact opposite of fragile. Let us call it antifragile. Antifragility is beyond resilience or robustness. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better. This property is behind everything that has changed with time: evolution, culture, ideas, revolutions, political systems, technological innovation, cultural and economic success, corporate survival, good recipes (say, chicken soup or steak tartare with a drop of cognac), the rise of cities, cultures, legal systems, equatorial forests, bacterial resistance … even our own existence as a species on this planet.

Here is the point about antifragility in Farnam Street’s post –

…we need to ask ourselves how we can improve our antifragility. How can we get to a place where we grow stronger through change and challenge? It’s not about getting “back to normal.” The normal that was our world in 2019 has proven to be fragile. We shouldn’t want to get back to a time when we were unprepared and vulnerable.

And here is Safal Niveshak’s version of this very important mental model of antifragility.  

The Atlantic carries a biweekly column by Arthur Brooks titled “How to Build a Life,” wherein he tackles questions of meaning and happiness. His latest post talks about four rules for identifying your life’s work, and it’s really good.   Brooks’ rule number one reads “the work has to be the reward” –

One of the biggest mistakes people make in their careers is to treat work primarily as a means to an end. Whether that end is money, power, or prestige, this instrumentalization of work leads to unhappiness. The psychologist Elliott Jaques — famous for inventing the term midlife crisis — once quoted a middle-aged patient as saying, “Up till now, life has seemed an endless upward slope, with nothing but the distant horizon in view. Now suddenly I seem to have reached the crest of the hill, and there stretching ahead is the downward slope with the end of the road in sight.” Later, he admitted that he himself was this “patient,” and this was his own lament. He had worked away for years in his career to get some fabulous reward, and then realized that there wasn’t much reward ahead at all, just aging and death.

When your career is just a means to an end, the payoff, even if you get it, will be unsatisfying. Don’t make that mistake. Your work won’t give you joy and fulfillment every day, of course. Some days it will feel pretty unsatisfying. But with the right goals — earning your success and serving others — you can make the work itself your reward.

What a fine advice this is!  

Forbes carries an insightful investigative piece on the $2.5 trillion debt binge that has taken some of America’s leading companies including Boeing and AT&T from blue chips to near junk –

According to a Forbes investigation, which analyzed 455 companies in the S&P 500 Index — excluding banks and cash-rich tech giants like Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft — on average, businesses in the index nearly tripled their net debt over the past decade, adding some $2.5 trillion in leverage to their balance sheets. The analysis shows that for every dollar of revenue growth over the past decade, the companies added almost a dollar of debt. Most S&P 500 firms entered the bull market with just 20 cents in net debt per dollar of annual revenue; today that figure has climbed to 38 cents.

But as the coronavirus pandemic cripples commerce worldwide, American corporations face a grim reality: Revenues have evaporated, but their crushing debt isn’t going anywhere.

As Prof. Sanjay Bakshi wrote in his tweet sharing this post, these are “useful case studies on distortions in capital structure caused by many factors including artificially low interest rates, perverse incentives for senior management, and a myopic market fixated on cash flow returns to stockholders instead of long term strength of businesses.”

Indian companies are yet to test such level of madness, at such a large scale, but many are almost there (plus we have ample experience from the past) with their bulging balance sheets and run by managers that do not know of anything but instant gratification at the cost of long term business growth, stability, and value creation. Beware of them!

Pro Pen 2

One of the important factors of the performance in action is the Wacom Pro Pen 2, which delivers incredible speed, sensitivity and accuracy – in addition to the flexibility in varying natural pen grip that people differ individually.

  Hands-on with the Mobile Studio Pro 16

The obvious first option was to open up Adobe Photoshop CC and give the drawing/sketching capabilities a quick run to get the feel of the pen-to-surface response and sensitivity. Having used several variations of the Wacom Cintiq tablets in the past, I really wanted to experience this new screen and pen technology, that Wacom engineers have claimed is a thinner glass with a tougher scratch-resistant surface and that the lag time is also undetectable.

The pen tip action is so smooth it does require you to adapt a different touch than you might be used to with your old tablet or Cintiq. I had to adjust my pen tool prefs settings to require a harder pressure than I have in the past until I can develop a lighter feel in my drawing approach.

If you’re an existing Wacom user, this experience is noticably different – in a very good way!

I also spend time re-programming the click buttons on the pen to simulate Right-click and Alt/Option buttons for ease of bringing up contextual menus, brush and selection tools.

If you are a keyboard shortcut junkie like I am, there are definitely some things you use frequently that can be programmed into the ExpressKeys and the TouchRing that will really speed up productivity (I’ll get into those more in my next article in this series for various apps/functions). Not to mention the many, many other keystroke combinations you may use in any one application.

However, I found that relying solely on the touch-screen/pop-up keyboard for simple Windows OS tasks such as Logging in with your password and accessing apps or the Start menu from the task bar (if it’s hidden) is nearly impossible at times, so I opted for the wireless keyboard to keep handy. It’s also much more intuitive to enter text for design and layout work as well as extracting text from a doc that you use in your layout/design or on-screen text for your video productions.

Also – the touch screen is as sensitive as you’d hope it might be. Very similar to using a large iPad and familiar gestures (you can choose between Windows 10 standards or Wacom standards in your setup prefs). I would highly suggest setting up one of your ExpressKeys on the tablet to toggle the touch screen on/off or you’ll be cursing at it while you work and it’s trying to guess between your pen tip and your hand for input instructions.

One thing I’ve been using is a Compression Glove that not only helps isolate my skin away from the screen’s surface while working, but also supports my hand/joints while working for hours gripping the pen. It keeps the screen clean from skin oil residue and doesn’t triger the touch screen surface unless you want to intentionally. Also, I’ve discovered a “hot spot” on the screen that gets really, really warm on the lower-center which I assume is where the processor or video card is located and it actually feels hot to the touch. The glove helps to isolate your hand so the intensity of the heat is much less when you glide over it or rest your hand on the screen at that location.

Also, the built-in 8MP camera will allow you to capture images on the spot directly to your device so you can start working on design comps, sketches and storyboarding right away. This is perfect for location scouting and storyboard development!

Using the MobileStudio Pro 16 with Adobe After Effects

I know you’re asking yourself “Why would I even think about trying to run After Effects on a pen-computer?” – and in most cases, you probably won’t very often. But if you have to do a lot of roto or paint work on hundreds/thousands of subsequent frames, then I can’t imagine NOT using either a Cintiq or the MobileStudio Pro for these tasks.

I tried it out with the memory-intensive Roto Brush Tool and working with media it was reading off the USB 3 SSD drive and it performed surprisingly well. Would I do a full feature production with this alone – no way, but if I needed to take care of a couple shots on the road or on a client site, then having the MobileStudio Pro with me is a self-contained way of accomplishing what would otherwise need for me to wait until I returned to my studio – or carry a lot more gear with me.

3D Scanning with the Intel RealSense Cameras and Sensors

Something that nobody would expect with a pen computer is a built-in 3D scanner. It’s a smaller version of the Intel RealSense that promises to deliver a reasonably good scanned model.

The camera array on the back of the MobileStudio Pro contains Wacom’s native 8MP RGB camera (far left, not used for 3D scanning), followed by the R200’s first IR camera, its RGB camera, the IR laser projector and at the far right the second IR camera. The mount underneath is for the optional stand.

I tried a couple half-assed attempts to scan something but realized I wasn’t really following the instructions properly (who reads the instructions right out of the box?)

So we’ll be looking forward to doing some proper scans and modeling with the Artec Studio and MobileStudio Pro in an upcoming article in this series. I can only imagine how useful this modeling capability could be when combined with 3D texture painting on the scanned models.

Again – that’s a drastic comparison but also a great example of how to get a good scan and just how impressive a model you can get with a portable device!

My First Look take-away…

So my thoughts and observations in general after testing the MobileStudio Pro 16 for a bit are positive and also mixed. The design in general may be confusing to some. Is it a pen-tablet? Is it a baseless laptop? Is it a 3D scanner? What problems does it solve for me?

It might be the first rendition of what computing in the future may look/feel like. Maybe we’ll see something similar in the not-too-distant future that is more modular and customizable?

Does it replace my laptop? Of course not. But it does allow me spontaneous creativity in a single tool that can do so much. What I know is that Wacom is trying hard to capture a different market here and I think they’re on to something.

PROS:

Portability and flexibility. The MobileStudio Pro 16 fits in my laptop backpack and weight a lot less. I’ve used it (with the keyboard) as my sole workstation a couple days just to see if it could be done, and while I had to keep it plugged into AC power for most of the time, it functioned surprisingly well!

The Pen functions beautifully with the screen glass. The right amount of drag on the surface keeps it from feeling like glass – more like a Rapidograph on vellum. No noticeable lag time with normal motions and works great with all the Adobe CC apps that I tested it on.

Plus it’s just cool. Way beyond just a tablet – it’s a real computer with real software. Not cheesy mobile apps or dumbed-down versions. I can use my actual production files off my hard drive and work directly with them.

CONS:

The only negatives for me from the original OOBE (Out Of Box Experience) was the lack of accessories that I find too important to exclude to make the MobileStudio Pro a truly self-contained pen computing experience for the working professional. Like the wireless keyboard ($50), Wacom Link ($70 – to use with your Mac/PC like a regular Cintiq) and a stand ($100). I mean, C’mon – at least throw in the friggin’ plastic stand folks! Very few people are going to be ONLY holding the device in their laps or in the air with their hands. I had to prop it up constantly to get at a usable viewing/drawing angle.

And the lack of Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. USB 3 is slow and outdated and hard to find compatible peripherals for. I’m really hoping they update the ports in their future designs.

Also – the battery life kinda sucks. We’re talking like iPad 2 battery life. And I haven’t found a portable charging brick yet that will support the MobileStudio Pro, so you’d better hope you’re going to be near an AC power outlet and DON’T FORGET YOUR AC ADAPTER! 😉

I’ve been trying out two new (for me) games lately: Scum and Villainy, and Champions Now. How’s that been working out?

Scum and Villainy

This is a hack of Blades in the Dark, so much of what is said here probably applies to Blades. This game caters to the Solo-Firefly-Cowboy Bebop style of space rogues. You pick one of three ship types, indicating the sort of campaign you want to play (smuggling and thieving; bounty hunting; rebels against the empire), and build a crew of rogues and ne’er-do-wells who’ll fly it.

This game has a lot of moving pieces. There’s multiple injury systems (Stress, Harm, Trauma, Resistance rolls), multiple competence metrics (player vs. ship ability scores, playbook special abilities plus a per-job choice of load), multiple ways to boost your die rolls (special moves, taking Stress, Devil’s Bargains, assistance, group actions), multiple everything. The character sheets on Roll20 are some of the most complex I’ve ever seen.

As a result, the game is starting out slowly. The group made maybe four distinct ‘moves’ in the first session (reach the contact in the bar; notice he’s dead and try to learn something about the corpse; have a confrontation with an NPC; escape the cops), and the second and third sessions have been going about as fast. I think part of that is the people involved, but there’s also a lot of decision-making around individual rolls, followed by a fair amount of interpretation of results.

Evil Hat’s Fate line is often seen as “rules light”, but all the stuff they’ve put out - notably Venture City Stories for superheroes - just has a ton of crunch, and drills down into detail after detail of how a thing works. S&V feels like that tendency to add crunch to a pass-fail-complicate rubric has gone wild.

I think there are things to like. The concept of “load” is neat - it feels like it satisfies GMs who don’t want to track a lot of encumbrance and don’t mind players coming up with equipment on the spot, but at the same time imposes some choices and sacrifices. The game has not one but two ways to express action difficulty, with some room for players to escalate if they need a better outcome, and that’s a welcome change from the relentless sameness of PBTA game difficulties. I just wish they didn’t have to surround it with so much complexity.

Verdict: this feels like a good game to play if you want this one particular thing (rogues IN SPACE doing JOBS where things always go to SHIT) and have an experienced facilitator, but as a game for a bunch of newbies to pick up, it’s rough.

Champions Now

This is a resurrection of the Champions/Hero System game rules, the first major point-buy system and a cousin to GURPS. Champions is notorious with older gamers for being a math-intensive dice-fest, but it’s also a system that lets you drill into a ton of detail about how your characters work and what they can do.

Champions Now was Kickstarted by Ron Edwards and others, promising “to show you why the original Champions […] was actually just that good”. I got into Hero System at 4th edition, when Steve Long rolled in and did a bunch of work on the system. And having played a bit, I’m going to say I prefer later Hero System to this.

Mechanically, it’s not a complete mess, but there’s a lot of randomness. Some of this is inherited from Champions (which was complicated and idiosyncratic). Some of the systems (like Knockback) haven’t been reworked yet, and the text acknowledges this. The new work that’s been done, however, seems intent on messing with existing (and playtested) systems in novel ways, not unifying and clarifying the weaknesses of classic Champions. It’s a '73 Toyota beater car whose owner is proud of the new stereo system.

It’s not all bad. There are some very welcome changes from traditional Hero, such as the unification of Defense scores, some specific power mechanics (e.g. Power Defense), and more. If there’s interest, I can analyze these as they compare to later Hero System editions. Some of the changes don’t seem to have any good justification, beyond “I prefer it this way” or “I think PCs have it too easy” (in a recent video post, Ron literally says he wants PCs “in the dirt” more often).

What I get from reading Champions Now is that it’s Ron Edwards’ house rules, not a true overhaul of an old system, and so it feels like the problems described above aren’t likely to be addressed, because they are considered features, not bugs. The closest comparison I can make is to Rifts. Kevin Siembieda is reputedly a great GM, but he’s not a great game creator or publisher. The Rifts books are shot through with opinions, “don’t have fun this way” rules, and more. Similarly, the Champions Now playtest document I have (version 0.5 as of this post) includes comments like this:

“I don’t want your opinions” (although he qualifies this by saying that after he hears what we came up with, he’s willing to … debate?)

“it’s best not to discuss or negotiate the statements” (in context, this is about the GM establishing two statements about what the game is about)

“Originality is over-rated” (in context, talking about character creation, and in the same section he tells us what character types not to allow)

Ron’s welcome to his opinions, and many players may agree with them, but my feeling is that this “my way or the highway” style of game design is antithetical to what really made Champions brilliant: how much of a toolkit and a sandbox it really was for imaginative players.

Verdict: an opinionated overhaul of traditional Champions, with more restrictions on chargen and play style than recent Hero System editions. Champs was never a newbie-friendly game, but how much nostalgia you have for a certain style of gameplay will determine whether a veteran player enjoys it or not. I’m very unlikely to want to play again.

She was carved from Adam’s marrow, boiled into Eden with an innocent mind and gracious heart. And oh, how she loved Adam and their children. The life she lead was pure, virtuous, and lively. But soon the toils of human nature struck, curiosity delving deep within the subtle roots hidden under fine ivory flesh. Eve was tired of following rules, tired of being at the beck and call of Adam’s every whim, and in that moment of explicit rambunctious action, Eve and her tempestuous ways ate off of the forbidden fruit and proves her gluttonous. There was a slight trial before the fair maiden was expelled from Eden and caste off to Earth with nothing but magic brewing within her veins.

Upon awaking, Eve soon felt a roaring fire of hatred blooming within, every memory and through flooding to he everlasting conscience, relearning her past and feeling everything on a deeper scale, it was as if her humanity had intensified after everything she had gone through. It was infuriating, especially after everything that she had done for Adam. The way he pointed fingers towards her, was sickening. Revenge was such a silly concept, but Eve wanted Adam to be destroyed. She vowed that she was going to be the one to do it too. She was going to need help, especially if she wanted to get anywhere anytime soon. It wasn’t long before Eve found that she wasn’t alone. A group of Earth’s inhabitants surrounded her, and eminated their warmth over her bare body.

Eve learned the power of persuasion. She gained affinity with her followers by detailing their every wish and desire.She used her nearly profound powers to grant them small tokens of affection just to keep them at bay. The control was within her grasp. She finally felt everything that had ever been on option in Eden. And with her new power, the Empress of Magic started to profit from her abilities; gaining wealth and information from the sheep of the lands, bringing happiness to those who bargained for it. However, Eve soon learned that her powers aren’t always as faithful as she presumed. With every spell  she cast there’s always room for more than just positive consequences, but negative ones as well. Humans began to fear her and her ways of magic, calling a court to have the woman hanged for her devious crimes. The followers she held near and dear came to her rescue on the brink of her death, and she ran to solitude.

Centuries pass, and an uproar of legends and stories are told through the grapevine of a man that shifts into a horrid beast. A monster that looks much of a wolf but his actions prove he’s stronger, faster, and the ultimate winner of brawls. This man holds an alpha status; and is said to be named Adam. Upon hearing these rumors, and digging up any information the witch could bother to bear, it was under her speculation that the wolf was her Adam, the man who single-handedly destroyed her entire existence. The minx traveled through land and sea, traveling throughout the continents to obtain any and as much information that she possibly could find on him. Once Columbus founded the great land of America, the witch decided to make that her home, finding all the necessities to build her empire like non-other.

To this day Eve is continuously building, and growing. She reserves her right to be the goddess she once was. Soon everyone will know  of her reign, and she will get revenge on everyone who has ever deceit-ed against her. Hopefully, just hopefully, she will gain the control she needs to revive her sons, so that she can take back what’s rightfully her’s.

Her major failing is her lack of judgment due to circumstantial occasions such as: falling in love, trusting others, or helping those who need not be helped.

Compassionate: [  a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering. ]  : – Those who brought with them misfortune are always given her sympathy. Although she rules with an iron fist, she finds herself caring deeply for those around her, and would do anything to deter their suffering.

Virtuous: [ conforming to moral and ethical principles; morally excellent; upright ] : – Eve always yearns to do the right thing. She goes out of her way to fix things, and work as a little soldier of light when needed. Her morals are intact, and due to this, people tend to fear her less. In turn, they treat her as a queen. That, they love more than someone they fear. Minus the whole, “eating the forbidden fruit” thing.

Obstinate: [ firmly or stubbornly adhering to one’s purpose, opinion, etc.; not yielding to argument, persuasion, or entreaty. ] : – There was a promise that Eve made to herself that she wasn’t going to allow people to control her. Additionally,  she was going to stick to her views and hold to her morals above any and all contempt that could sneak past her.

Obsessive:  [ being, pertaining to, or resembling an obsession ] : – Although she would probably outright disagree, Eve is extremely obsessive. It’s been 6000 years and she still wants revenge for what Adam did to her. That’s merely one example of how obsessive she is. Eve obsesses about almost everything, and lately she’s been obsessing about her appearance, as well as how people view her, but actually SEE her as well.
