#so we watched inglourious basterds

I know, I know, don't read youtube comments, but while looking up a scene from Inglourious Basterds for a voice reference, I ended up at the famous "Bear Jew" scene where Eli Roth, y'know, beats a guy to death with a baseball bat. If you don't know it, Brad Pitt and the gang have three German soldiers captured, and they're trying to get them to give up the position of the nearby regiment. So, they bring up the commanding officer, and he's very stoic, and he won't give up the position under threat of getting beat to death in front of his two men with a baseball bat. So, Eli Roth comes out to beat him to death with a baseball bat. And he's continuing to be very stoic and noble, and Eli Roth points to the medals on his chest and says, "you get that for killing Jews?"
And the Nazi officer says, with a righteous look, "Bravery."
And then I scrolled down to the comments, and comment after comment is going,
"Man, that little nod Eli Roth does after he says, 'bravery'. He can't help but respect him."
"Wow, he really was brave."
"Eli Roth's character got owned by, 'Bravery'."
And... did we watch the same scene? "He can't help but respect him?"
Yes, the officer is decorated in all sorts of medals for valor, bravery, courage, whateverthe fuck. He's incredibly clean-cut. He's, to take a word from the comments, "civil," and presented very nobly as he faces his death.
But he got those medals from the government of Nazi Germany. He got those for defending the machine that operates the camps. All that 'bravery' was in service of keeping the genocide going.
Have you ever looked someone in the eyes who hates you for what you are? Someone who sees you as less than human? It's chilling. There's no recognition there that you have within you the same spark of humanity they do. They could do anything to you. You are an insect.
So when the officer says, "Bravery," Eli Roth's character does nod. Not in respect, but because he knows this man will sacrifice anything, even his own life, to keep the machine running. This man thinks that's noble. Eli's acknowledging that the officer has embraced Nazism to its core.
So he beats him to death with a bat.
Why a baseball bat? Well, one, because baseball. Extremely American symbolism. Positions the Jewish character as just as American as the non-Jewish Americans. This is important: this is 1941. There are still places Jews cannot buy property and businesses that will kick us out, and this will remain the case for another 20 years.
But the other, more important reason is dignity. You threaten this guy's life; he doesn't break. You shoot him, he and he's dead very quickly. He gets a clean hero's death in front of his men. Maybe his expression doesn't even change. The front of 'civility' goes with him to the grave.
But a baseball bat. You can't kill someone nearly as fast with a baseball bat. Concuss, sure, permanently damage, but it's not over in an instant.
So when people react to, "Bravery," they're stopping a conversation 2/3rd of the way in. Act One: Eli Roth says, "you get that for killing Jews?" Act Two: the officer says, "Bravery."
And Act Three: the moment the bat connects with the officer's head, the cut the heroic music. He wiggles and squirms. His hands snap up to his chest like a dead bug while his mouth gapes, brain too damaged to scream. He can be as stoic as he likes; as soon as Eli connects, he's a blood-soaked parody of himself. He doesn't get to die with dignity. He tells the world that he is proud to represent genocide, and for that he is made into a mockery.
That's why you use a bat.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024) review
Tumblr media
Who the fuck cast this Churchill?? Looks nor sounds like the original Prime Minister. Where’s Gary Oldman when you need him?
Plot: Under the guidance of the British PM, a group of military officials hatch a daring plan to neutralize Hitler's fleet of German U-boats during World War II. Made up of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, the top-secret combat unit uses unconventional techniques to battle the Nazis and change the course of the war.
I’ll always make the effort to watch anything Guy Ritchie releases. He’s a proven director that has made so many films I truly adore, including The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Snatch and The Gentlemen to name a few. I absolutely love his writing style, with his characters spilling dialogue like they are proclaiming poetry, all the while cussing and using foul-mouthed lingo to the extremes. That being said, in recent years I have noted that Ritchie has been working a little too much. Don’t get me wrong, I admire his passion and work ethic, but I swear we’ve been getting about two annual projects from him for the past few years, and he’s already got 3 or 4 other directorial efforts on the way. If we look at his most recent movies, The Covenant was a surprisingly grounded and powerful war movie that was truly engaging, however before that we had a couple of throwaway action flicks with Jason Statham, the titles of both I can’t remember without needing to look them up on IMDb, and there was also that Aladdin live-action remake with a blue pre-slap Will Smith as the Genie, where honestly I questioned why Ritchie of all people was chosen to direct, as Disney is not what one thinks of when considering Guy Ritchie’s gritty gangster filmography. So there’s very much a quality over quality concern here, at least in my eyes, however again I would always be in line for a Guy Ritchie movie, so I have finally checked out his most recent directorial effort in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and here’s what I thought.
It’s an Inglourious Basterds-lite rip-off. Even the music score by Christopher Benstead, as delightful as it was, felt like it belonged in a Tarantino movie, and the villain is played by Til Schweiger, who if one recalls also starred in Inglorious Basterds as ironically one of the basterds. So in a nutshell this is another movie about smashing and slicing Nazis like butter, blowing shit up with reckless abandon and throwing about amusing quips that can be referred to as banter. However for a movie with a supposedly exciting set-up where Churchill acts as a somewhat Nick Fury-type, as he sets up his WW2 style Avengers team, the whole thing feels a bit lifeless. Stuff is happening and brutal killings are completed, but the movie lacks any sense of energy, tension or sense of urgency.
Supposedly this is based on a true story, however after seeing the movie I cannot name a single character. All the main team lacks any depth or layers, as such finding it hard to care for any of them. In the trailers Henry Cavill was showcased as this psychotic deranged man who sticks his tongue out and eyes maniacally wide open as he guns down Nazi scum, so I was looking forward to an unhinged performance from him, however in the final product it turns out Henry Cavill is just the regular soft-spoken Henry Cavill, now just with a longer beard and messy hair. So nothing special - he gets to kill some Nazis though. Alan Ritchson, known to most as Prime’s Jack Reacher, gets some great bow and arrow Nazi kills, but in terms of any personality he was given a couple of unfunny jokes and glasses. Henry Golding….was just kind of there? He also killed some Nazis. Eiza González sings a song, and kills one Nazi. Again, all the actors are playing supposedly real life people, but in no way does the movie take any time to get to know its characters. And again let’s not even about that miscast of Winston Churchill - like seriously what the hell??
Ultimately I was left disappointed. This is a moderately entertaining action flick, with a couple of fun moments, but overall it’s a wasted Guy Ritchie effort, and again a signal that the director should maybe slow down a little, and take more time in between films to actually cook up something worthwhile. C’mon Ritchie, be a gentleman, take a break. Have a Snickers.
Overall score: 4/10

HEY GIRL
Watched / read anything good recently?
was watching dungeon meshi but then that gay ahh bath scene came on and my moms in the room w me so like 💀💀💀💀 reading 1984 rn bcs assignment, im ten pages in bcs i keep fawking playing honkai star rail 😭😭😭 omg, but i was in the midst of watching dil se before i realised i was getting distracted too easily and it was keeping me from enjoying it properly. was only watching it bcs i couldnt find bombay (1995, not the city 💀💀) anywhere. probs bcs nobody gaf abt archiving desi movies 😭😭😭😭 its tough out here, but like for dil se honestly i rlly liked the screenplay and the way it was directed even tho like . i literally only got to the first song of the film 💀💀 even then. also oh my god srk has not a SINGLE dancing bone in his body like ive bitched abt it before but oml hrithik roshan and tiger shroff are actually carrying the reputation of bollywood's male actor's dancing abilities on their back....now if only theyd stop FAWKING taking up propaganda films 😭😭😭
i actually kinda need to leave a separate paragraph for how bad srk dances like its not just when he was young...in chaiyya chaiyya literally EVERYBODY is on beat except him....and it KEELS me because ure telling me u cant keep tempo ??? brother 😭😭😭😭😭 but ok even in the present like, he stays on beat (barely) but hes SO STIFF?? i like saw some clip of him dancing with an actress, it mightve been deepika padukone in happy new year ??? oh my god it was SO bad. he was SO stiff. it KILLED me. bollywood actress go through HELL but sanjay dutt srk and a bunch of other male actors get away with not being able to dance well 😭😭😭😭 my queen kareena kapoor took dance classes before filming k3g yet srk and amitabh bacchan got away w shava shava....Sick and Twisted world we live in like....anyway i actually dk if thalapthy vijay is a bhakt but this is y he solos even tho i have verithanam trauma....sings n dances well etc, this is y bollywood flops consistently actually
pls take that paragraph lightheartedly if ure desi 💔 ok anyway
the god of small things by arundhati roy is good....i only read like 20 pages tho but ik plot 💀💀💀💀 i think the seven moons of maali almeida might also b good, its by shehan karunatilaka
ok last unfinished thing im gna recommend....Hot Tkae but....i liked saltburn...i still have the 2nd half of the movie to finish (stopped some time after the reveal) but again, ik the plot 😭 i still have some problems w it tho but its not rlly abt the hypersexuality. cinematography fucked. 4:3 aspect ratio choice? ATE. SO BADD. but ill also need to finish the film. but tbh its obsessed boy x rich boy trope wasnt rlly handled well in my opinion, micah nemerever's these violent delights solos in that area. and i think the story is flawed
ok NOW. i liked fleabag. actually i LOVED fleabag. think its a masterpiece. both seasons but esp the 2nd one (felt more refined but compared to other shows, s1 SOLOS). the boys s4 is dropping!! invincible s2 was alr i bet the animation studio suffered hard tho bcs wtf was that style change mid season 😭😭😭. and i don't rlly think the direction in which Nolan's character arc is gna go to will turn out that great? also, i loved gerta gerwig's ladybug! its actually crazy how she made ladybug and barbie both . one is amazing. the other is well uhm.
oh also i liked inglourious basterds and pulp fiction . quentin tarantino kinda looks like a walking talking serial killer mugshot tho i saw an interview where he was asked why kill bill had so much violence and was honestly surprised by how girlypop he was. not forgetting him choking diane kruger on set tho !
watched batman begins. it was aight 😭 rewatched matt reeves' batman right after. liked it betterr. i LOVEDDD heartbreak high, s1 and s2 !! usually with shows i only like s1 best, but w heartbreak high i literally ADOREDDD s2, the finale was so good !!! im also watching the gentlemen (the show) rn, and i rllyyy like it hehe. tried watching tick tick boom again bcs I'd actually dropped it midway when it had first released bcs that one scene where she was like "you're thinking of a song rn aren't you" was so stress inducing that I had 2 click away 💀💀 n then i forgot abt it. picked it up again and omg it's actually so good how did I miss it the first time 😭😭😭
oh yeah I also liked the fall of the house of usher . also ! another incompleted thing but im also in the midst of watching the three of us (film). its so good !! i loved the atmosphere and cast performances can't wait 2 see how it turns out :))

favourite movie? And also, if you could go on holiday/vacation to ANYWHERE in the world for a week, where would you go and what would you do?
Oooh anon I just can't pick one movie, here have them all:
Trance (2013): a psychological thriller about an art auctioneer who suffers from amnesia after he was injured during a heist. the criminals wanted Goya's Witches in the Air but the painting got lost and our auctioneer can't remember where he hid it. So they hire a hypnotherapist to recover his lost memories. A very interesting and underrated movie with at least 3 MAJOR PLOT TWISTS. I needed to watch it three times to completely understand it. Very stimulating and the cinematography is nice!! An all time fave indeed!
Inglourious Basterds (2009): I'm a history nerd. My uncle recommended to me and in the end I wrote a whole analysis of the movie for an assignement. A fairy tale for history nerds especially if you're into all the "what if" scenarios. And I LOVE that around 2/3 of the movie has subs because every actor speaks in the respective language of their characters. Also I love Brad Pitt's awful Italian. And omg... Christoph Waltz... my literal gilf...
Revenge of the Sith (2005): I'm a Star Wars fan. Yes, I know all the memes from the whole trilogy by heart.
Treasure Planet (2002): My all time fave Disney movie since I was a lil kid. Jim's character always resonated with me. Iykyk.
If I had to pick one destination for travel, I'd definitely pick Benicarló, Spain! We lived there for a few months with my mom and my first step father. It was probably the happiest period of my life! We had a nice flat with a balcony facing the sea, spent afternoons at the beach and I was collecting sea shells! I still miss the sea, that old lighthouse, the warm winter, the palm trees and the unique scents. I wonder if it still feels the same after 16 years...

Survived family lunch, it went better then I expected, we didn't kill each other, so my body is fed and after that, I fed my soul, because in local museum is exhibition about Ancient Egypt. It was amazing, my younger me is very happy, because as a kid I wanted to be egyptologist or archaeologist, that was probably caused by watching too much Indiana Jones, Mummy, Lara Croft movies or Relic Hunters tv show. Also I used to know all steps of mummification, I was a weird kid.
Lots of unimportant things from this exhibition stuck in my brain, so why not to share it.
Miu means in language of ancient Egypt cat from that meow.
Sešej(sesen)means lotus, from that is Šošana(immediately Inglourious Basterds came to my mind) and from that is Susan.
The bandeges used for mumification were beautifully painted.
Mummification of animals totally normal, and it was done with such care and love. And the mummies of animals had faces and on some of them the bandages were wrapped in interesting patterns.
There was much more. Could talk about this stuff for hours.

Quentin Tarantino has been making international press rounds in support of his “Cinema Speculation” book tour. He spoke recently speaking to Spain’s Diari ARA about how one of his only box office bombs shook his confidence as a film director. That bomb would be “Death Proof,” Tarantino’s 2017 stuntman action-thriller starring Kurt Russell that was released domestically as one half of the movie “Grindhouse.” The other half was Robert Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror.” “I have been lucky to write stories that connect with many people. This has allowed me to practice my art without the restrictions most filmmakers have,” Tarantino told the publication. “Now, a funny thing happened: for a while I got a lot of project proposals, until the studios assumed I was creating stories and it wasn’t worth the effort. But after ‘Death Proof,’ which didn’t do well at the box office and shocked my confidence, I started getting proposals again.” “They must have thought, ‘Perhaps now he’s touched and his temper has mellowed down, now is the time,'” Tarantino added. “And there’s nothing wrong with making commissioned movies for Hollywood. They always offered interesting projects. But I preferred to reinvest in myself and make ‘Inglourious Basterds.'” The filmmaker admitted in a 2021 interview with Empire magazine that he overestimated audiences' excitement for a double feature release like “Grindhouse." With ‘Grindhouse,’ I think me and Robert just felt that people had a little more of a concept of the history of double features and exploitation movies,” Tarantino said at the time. “No, they didn’t. At all. They had no idea what they were watching. It meant nothing to them, what we were doing. So that was a case of being too cool for school.” The filmmaker also touched upon the lack of nudity and sex scenes in his movies while speaking to Diari ARA. Outside of Robert De Niro and Bridget Fonda in “Jackie Brown,” Tarantino's filmography is lacking in sex. “It’s true, sex is not part of my cinema vision," Tarantino said. “And the truth is that, in real life, it’s painful to shoot sex scenes. Everyone is very tense. And if it was already problematic before, now it is even more so. If there was a sex scene essential to the story, I would have, but so far it hasn’t been necessary.” Tarantino is eyeing a fall start for what will be his 10th and final feature directorial effort, “The Movie Critic.” While rumors claim the 1970s-set movie is inspired by Pauline Kael, Tarantino has said the movie will focus on a male film critic.

I am a fan of the Rampage movie. At least that’s what i call them. I suppose Revenge film is what they’re known as in terms of a wider audience. Hell, I'll even give you Vigilante genre but they all kind of have the same thing in common: Rampage. You know the type; Something starring a protagonist who is cutting a bloody swath through a crew of individuals as they right a wrong. Think John Wick or a decent amount of Denzel Washington’s filmography. Seriously, for a minute there in the Early Aughts, mans was on a mission to punish absolutely everyone and it was amazing to witness. Now, the aforementioned examples will definitely have a representative on this list but the genre as a whole, is up there for me. I can’t say i love it s much as, say, Cyberpunk, but it’s definitely a solid top-three in my yes. As such, i wanted to throw a few suggestions out there to check out, especially considering I've seen literally hundreds of these films. Hundreds.
10. The Equalizer
Tumblr media
We’re going to start this list of with a bit of a cheat. Equalizer All of them. Literally every Equalizer flick released to date. Solid Rampage films, the lot of them. John Wick is going to show up on this a bit down the line and, yes, he’s getting the same treatment because there is no weakness in those films, just like Denzel’s flagship franchise. Seriously, he’s made two with a third on it’s way this September. The Equalizer is the only franchise win which Denzel has returned. Dude never does sequels but he got three of these in the bank To date. John Wick has kind if injected a ton of energy into the Rampage genre so we might see a few more of these before Denzel bows out. Even then, this thing is tailor made for his son who had a strong run in Tenet.
9. Mandy
Tumblr media
Bro. Just watch it and you’ll get it. Words fail me for this one. seriously, just check i out. It’s a fever dream of pure mayhem, i sh*t you not.
8. I spit on Your Grave
Tumblr media
This is not a kind watch. The catalyst for this particular Rampage is graphic and very much fetishized. It is not kind. It is very barbaric. It is not for the feint of heart. Neither is the whole ass raucous bloodshed which follows. I Spit on Your Grave has the reputation of being gratuitously cruel and, believe me, it earns that sh*t but, behind the shock and controversy, is one of the most visceral rampage films i have ever seen in my entire goddamn life. The original is a staple of Revenge film lists, inspiring other like The Bad Batch, Promising Young Woman, and Revenge; All of which can be on this list in their own right but i wanted to pay homage, and give credit to, the grandmother of this sub-genre in a sub-genre. Go into this knowing you will be disgusted in every way possible.
7. V for Vendetta
Tumblr media
Is this a rampage film? In the strictest sense, hell yeah! It’s nothing like it’s graphic novel counterpart but it’s definitely peak rampage. I mean, this dude toppled a sitting government while leaving one helluva body count in his wake. V is a force of nature and, even though it feels like there was a ton of blood shed as he ripped apart a country, he has a lot in common with John Creasy and his exploits. Don’t let the Guy Fawkes mask and penchant for the theatrical fool you. This man was brutal and singular in his mission, culminating in one of the best rampages ever committed to film.
6. Kill Bill
Tumblr media
I struggled with this one,  really did. Kill Bill is a quintessential Revenge story which motivates one of the bloodiest Rampages in cinematic history. It absolutely deserves it’s place on this list, no doubt. My struggle was to include this one of Inglourious Basterds. Basterds is, for sure, a Rampage film. It has all the hallmarks of the best. But, at it’s core, it’s more Revenge than Rampage and i kind felt like Vendetta slid into that spot early on. Didn’t want to do that again, you know? Even if Basterds is my favorite Tarantino film. Even so, the Kill Bill duology is everything i want in my Rampage films. Bloody. Personal. Well written. Inspired. This sh8t is Tarantino breaching the mainstream. This is a genius genre director, given blockbuster budgets. This is Tarantino before the Oscar acclaim. Absolutely amazing set of films.
5. Oldboy
Tumblr media
Not the Josh Brolin one. Tat one sucks ass. No, I'm talking the batsh*t foreign original. I just mentioned the insane genius of Tarantino above? Well take that and slap some Korean sensibilities on top and you have Park Chan-wook. This man’s filmography is vast and eclectic. It covers so many different genres but share his striking penchant for visual brilliance. Oldboy is no different. This movie has a look to it’s bombastic inhumanity. The violence is visceral, yet, stylized, adding to the overwhelming bleakness of the narrative. Oldboy is an exercise is despair and malice and i love every second of it.
4. Tombstone
Tumblr media
I was hesitant to add this one. A lot of Westerns can be considered Rampage films but i, you know, hate those. I can count on probably two hands how many Westerns i actually like and one of those is f*cking Logan. That said, Tombstone is f*cking amazing. It has been for decades. This sh*t is well written, Wild West, American propaganda at it’s best. The Wild west was a time of straight up genocide and wanton anarchy as the US figured itself out and, in that muck of self discovery, we got the myth of the OK corral. Tombstone is a retelling of that sh*tshow and it is amazing to watch. Doc Holliday, alone, is worth the price of admission. I cannot sing the praises of this film enough and i absolutely abhor Western on the whole.
3. Leon the Professional
Tumblr media
I know this film as The Professional. It was the vehicle that catapulted a then, barely teenage, Natalie Portman into stardom. She had solid performances from a very stoic Jean Reno and the closest thing to a Joker archetype ever committed to film that’s not actually Joker, in Norman Stansfield. Luc Besson, the visionary responsible for The Fifth Element and Lucy, gave us this sweaty, gritty, neo-noir filled with absolute bedlam. The carnage is real and it’s very much intimate. I f*cking this film. It gives everything in Tarantino’s catalog a run for it’s money, often eclipsing them. If you’ve never seen Leon, watch that sh*t immediately. It’s pure cinematic brilliance. It’s everything!
2. Atomic Blonde
Tumblr media
Listen, it’s hard to bet against a film, set in Eighties, saturated with nostalgia, starring an ass-kicking Charlize Theron. Blonde is HEAVILY influenced by John Wick, with just a hint of Basic Instinct in there, but definitely stands on it’s own. It’s a crime this thing doesn’t have a sequel or a franchise unto it’s own because Blonde is every bit a film as the first John Wick. Arguably moreso considering how pedestrian Wick I’s writing turned out to be. The world of spies and double-agents in which Lorraine Broughton’s stories lie. Interestingly enough, Atomic Blonde is a f*cking comic book movie! It’s based on The Coldest City graphic novel. It’s a solid read with great art and has a Sin City feel to it.
1a. Man on Fire
Tumblr media
As a standalone film, Man of Fire is arguably the best Rampage movie ever captured on film. This thing has everything. Great performances. Brilliant writing. Fantastic set pieces, and whole ass brilliant kills. I mean, dude shoves a C4 bomb up a man’s ass just for information. I was captivated by the brutality in this movie and it was delivers in a cold, detached, damn near matter-of-fact way, by Denzel Washington’s John Creasy. This film was the one that really made me fall in love with the genre as a whole. Much like the above Atomic Blonde, this was adapted from the page, a book, and is technically a remake. There is a Man on Fire adaption which released in 1987. It’s a french production, like La Femme Nikita but I've ever seen it personally. No, John Creasy is all the burning mans i need.
1b. John Wick
Tumblr media
And i mean all of them. All of the John Wick franchise. Not one of these films is bad and they are the perfect representation of the Rampage genre. Every minute Keanu is on screen in that bulletproof suit, is a f*cking treat wrapped in potent mayhem. I absolutely love these films and, to date, they are the best Rampage flicks i have ever seen, outside of Man on Fire. The world of Wick is easily the best thing about these films. I mean, Wick has developed considerably as a character but everything around him is just so captivating. Sure, the violence is on point but there is so much more to this world of fervent rampage and constant carnage which makes the entire John Wick franchise so goddamn special. Watch any of the John Wick films and you will be entertained. Personally, the first is my favorite, so far, but any of them are solid bets. Even the fourth, which releases in a few weeks. That one looks to be the best to date.
Honorable Mentions: Drive, The Crow, Machete, Max Payne, Taken, Death Wish, The Bad Batch, I saw the Devil, The Harder They Fall, The Long Kiss Goodnight, True Grit, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, Inglourious Basterds, The Northman, Revenge, Upgrade, Mad Max, Martyrs (kind of), Darkman, Get Carter

Honorable Mentions: Drive, The Crow, Machete, Max Payne, Taken, Death Wish, The Bad Batch, I saw the Devil, The Harder They Fall, The Long Kiss Goodnight, True Grit, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, Inglourious Basterds, The Northman, Revenge, Upgrade, Mad Max, Martyrs (kind of), Darkman, Get Carter

hey mickey!! bringing u some flowers in these trying winter times 🌻💐🌷🌹🌸 i hope ur doing super duper well!!!
i also wanted to ask if u have any recs for like. movie review channels? :’3 or maybe more like movie deep-dives/analyses? i watch prettymuchit a bunch but their videos r more reactions than reviews (IF U DONT ALREADY WATCH THEM I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM THOOO they r soso funny)… if u have any at all i’d love to hear them!! i figure thats a pretty good starting point for my filmbro arc pshdjhd
sending u all the love n hugs <33 i WILL get to ur movie and soundtrack recs btw im mentally getting into the cinema headspace 💯💯
my sweet sweet angel ari!! thank you for the flowers<33333
beware! beware! ask mickey about movies and they'll go insane!!!! this ALSO this got very long but we are past apologizing (i'm squinting my eyes at u bc u need to remember that) HERE WE GOOOOO
i will apologize for not having a movie review recommendation for you though:(((((((((((( i literally get all that i need from my letterboxd mutuals (i trust them with my life) i have found the people who have the same taste as me and i know that when the majority of them like a movie - i will like it. a "real film critic" could say that it's shit but when the people of letterboxd say it's five stars i fucking know it's five stars ok
i haven't been on a movie review channel/person search in a while but last i was i realized that so many of them are rather technical and that's boring..... so i really do trust letterboxd more. of course, there are a lot of just one-liners (i literally do that too) but there are people who write long and deep reviews and those feel so much more personal and give more insights than the ones i've seen floating around the internet.
FOR MOVIE ANALYSIS my favourite channel is lessons from the screenplay!!!!!! i've been watching his videos for ever ever and ever and i love them so much!!1! he has taught me so much, especially when i was just getting more into films!!! so i went to my little playlist of videos and i picked up some about my all time favourite films!!
inglourious basterds - the elements of suspense; my god, do i love this movie....... this is a yearly watch for me, i've memorized the lines and all. the performances are great, the soundtrack is amazing, it's so fucking funny??? and i'm now also realizing how much of a filmbro i'm actually coming off as but do i care? not at all. i love this movie.
annihilation - the art of self-destruction; okay i mentioned this already but i'm doing it again!!!!!!! it's such a fucking experience i really actually hope you'll watch it one day (and that you'll tell me your thoughts) this is also like a life-changer of a movie in my opinion, i often just randomly start thinking about it; the visuals, the insanity of it aaaaahhhh.
nightcrawler - empathy for the antihero; overall this movie is sooo engrossing?? like mesmerizing but not necessarily in a good way lmao.
now i'll link some various ones (but still about my favourite movies/directors so u can get to know me better hehehhe) some of these do have spoilers but vid will give a warning if u don't wanna see that!!
how david fincher hijacks your eyes
when the director reallyyyy respects the audience…
hereditary | what the script teaches us
pirates of the carribean | accidentally genius
movie stunt coordinator breaks down 'atomic blonde' fight scene; i love this movie bc how she uses the things around her to fight, makes it so much more interesting that just fist fist knife knife
searching for disco elysium
what games are like for someone who doesn't play games; this one was a bit of a life changer for me, it seems like such a small little thing to talk about but it's so important it made me look at things and games so much more differently it's so cool he has two more on the same topic i think too!
i really tried to not go overboard but i just............. can't help it so here are a few more recs...........................
blade runner 2049 (2017) - a film about a replicant/an android detective who finds out that another replicant had a child many years ago (replicants cannot have children) and he's now convinced that he is said child this is sci-fi with some action and blood but it's not scary plus points for the insane visuals and the soundtrack 9/10 minus point for it being kind of slow paced?
the nice guys (2016) - a film about two private detectives; one of them is almost cool and the other one is so pathetic i love him so much this is a comedy so 10/10
the man from uncle (2015) - a film about spies spying on each other, it's so fun (the soundtrack is good but we knew that already didn't we smh) 9/10 minus point for armie hammer the cannibal

Just out of curiosity, I watched “RRR”. My initial thoughts:
1) This is a shonen anime movie. The main characters straight up have the “lovable underdog and angsty edgelord” dynamic, it’s a shonen anime.
2) It’s a bold move to depict real life figures in a completely fictional story. On one hand, I’m not a fan of misrepresenting real people, regardless of how good the movie turns out. On the other hand, it’s kinda inspiring that the filmmakers took these real life heroes and depicted them as Captain America-like superheroes. In a way, it’s honoring their legacy, even if none of it is true.
3) You can definitely see the Quentin Tarantino influence (director mentioned he was inspired by Inglourious Basterds). The British Raj are portrayed as emasculated bullies who are no match to the gigachad main heroes. Meanwhile, Raju and Bheem are always portrayed in the most Manly way in their quest for revenge and justice. Aside from Kill Bill, that’s straight up how QT approached his revenge movies.
4) I feel like Bheem getting a white British woman as his love interest was also part of the movie’s mission to completely emasculate the British Raj. Not only is Bheem way more Manly than the British, he’s also more attractive to their own women.
5) I feel that Sita was underused. I wanted to see more from her, especially since the most we saw of her was during the finale dance sequence. But hey, this is a dudebro movie so I’m not surprised that Bheem and Raju got the most attention.
6) The way Raju and Bheem stood out against the background cast is hilarious, especially with Raju. There’ll be scenes where Raju and Bheem are with other people and they just stand out because of how handsome and ripped they are. It’s like the casting director specifically looked for the most normal-looking, just-got-pulled-off-the-street people for the extras.
7) I watched Bollywood movies before so I wasn’t that surprised by the impossible physics. That being said, I laughed my ass off at the scene where the tree falls on the British governor’s car, which sent him flying upwards. Then, during mid-flight, the governor grabbed his rifle and shot at Raju’s car. That one shot then blew off a whole wheel, which somehow flipped the car like a gust of wind hit it.
8) My favorite battle was the midway fight scene. One, the British army somehow completely folded because they were being attacked by animals. Two, the fight between Bheem and Raju straight up reminded me of Naruto and Sasuke. They even had a moment where they were about to clash in mid-air with their signature elements.

gatzzz do u have any war movie recs… i trust you to have good taste
hmmmmmmmm okay.. not all of these I'm recommending in terms of "this is a good anti-war movie," some of them r good movies in and of themselves and others are culturally significant.. also some are mini series because i like them..
all quiet on the western front (1930) this one is insane to me. it's just insane. also pay attention to the lack of a soundtrack save for the very end it adds soooo much
wings (1927) well they're pilots they're gay they kiss. super cute soundtrack despite being a silent film
dunkirk. the movie 1917 wishes it was
generation kill. insane to me again. very uhhhhh visceral 👍
band of brothers. literally the peak of tv shows. we don't need any more.
full metal jacket. THE BOOK IS BETTER. But it's definitely like an important film. joker and cowboy. cowboy and joker. Etc
platoon. well it's fucked up also an important film and kind of cray
the blue max. bruno stachel is a vile little man and ok it's worse because in the book he's 18 but in the film he looks like he's like 30 so just keep in mind he's intended to be 18 dhsjdhgyAhurj but this film is slay af
regeneration. made for tv but it's ok. I watched it in 10 parts on YouTube and I didn't hate it.
inglourious basterds. it was interesting. i have no real opinion on it. people either love it or hate it. if nobody who watched it wanted to fuck hans landa then it would be better. operation greenup is actually kinda cooler imo but that's not a movie it's just. a military operation....
casablanca? I didn't finish it yet but it's good
good morning vietnam. not sure on this one but the acting is excellent and there's some parts that are really good.
Cannot think of any more. ....
catch 22. it's a hard book to adapt but both the 1970 movie and the hulu miniseries do a decent job
FIREBIRD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;!
on my watchlist. haven't researched very many of these tbh:
come and see
europa
das boot
land of mine
the grand illusion
the big parade
hells angels
paths of glory
i was nineteen
dr strangelove
the dawn patrol
lawrence of arabia
tuntematon solitas/the unknown soldiers
they shall not grow old
hatred and killing
enemy at the gates. Okay it's like a terrible movie but vasily zaitzev is played by jude law kind of homosexually so idk if you want to turn your brain off and just be like omg sniper yassss then it's fine
1917. complicated feelings on this one- it's a good and entertaining film but it's devoid of much else and i was epically harassed about it so that was cringe. i like the german characters the most
Anything related to John Boyne I hate him so much and I wish he died
The one about Alan Turing. Don't do it man
flyboys is so bad it's good but I'm putting it in this category because I can't recommend it in good faith. it's just like. Camp..
wonder woman. Yeah whatever it's technically a war film it's bad and inaccurate though.
the red baron. okay okay so he's like. cute :/ same case as enemy at the gates and flyboys though it's just bad and the romance is stupid and also fake? but it's fun to watch

Can you believe I love the wildest and craziest of characters since I was a kid, including a Nazi (Inglourious Basterds) and a pedo (The Green Mile), however I only get hate for Billy? Says a lot about the fandom as a whole, which is why I ignore them or mock them with silly gifs. If they lack critical thinking that hard I can't be bothered to have a discussion over character analysis.
I’ll be honest, I don’t particularly enjoy villains who fit into either of those categories. Like, those things personally make me deeply uncomfortable. However, I can recognize that there’s a difference between loving villains for the role they play within a given narrative and condoning or even celebrating what they say or do. For example, Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds was horrific but the way Christoph Waltz played the character made his scenes more interesting and nerve wracking to watch. It’s why he won awards for his performance. Narratives like that need a strong villain character because without them the major themes within the narrative fall apart.
The problem is that Billy isn’t that type of character. So when we talk about his trauma and his potential for healing people get offended. They confuse him with a villain, which is not the exact same thing as an antagonist. They think we condone what he says or does, but worse they honestly think a traumatized teenager is in the same category as the aforementioned villains solely based on his attitudes and behaviors. When I say the severity of Billy’s behavior pales in comparison to many other characters including beloved protagonists in other media, I mean it. He should not receive this much hatred and his punishment was way out of proportion to what he did.
