- When Pied Piper returned the kids to their parents (no, he didn't drown them, c'mon Eah show isn't that dark) he noticed a kid in the group who didn't ran to none of the adults in the village and no parents who ever sought her out.

That child was Melody, and seeing she had no parents and home, the Pied Piper adopted her

- Cheshire Cat created Kitty. Like she literally took a part of herself and molded it into a baby Kitty. How's that possible? To make herself disappear and reappear, the Cheshire Cat is made of smokey and pooffy stuff inside so if she wants a kid, she can easily just pluck off some of the smoke stuff from her arm or leg etc. It doesn't hurt in case you're wondering

- The Huntsman (Hunter's dad) and Red (Cerise's mom) were childhood, and the Huntsman was in love with her

It's was one-sided and Red was oblivious to his feelings and The Huntsman never had the courage to tell her how he truly felt...so you would get this teenage boy get all shy saying stuff like - "Wowza Red...funny to think how i'm technically ur Prince Charming...👉👈 saving u from the Big bad wolf....very fuunnyy riiight? haahahaa"

- Like it was shown in Class of Classics, King Charming was similar to Dexter at the start, but with the pressure to be a perfect Prince Charming, mixed in with his own insecurities and wanting not to fail his own destiny, he started to become the worst version of himself, but because he alligned with the rules of how a Pince Charming should be, many weren't that bothered by it, outside of Pinnochio and Goldie who knew the real him.

Pinnochio misses his old friend

- Red and EQ were those friends who since highschool had plans of their kids also being friends like they are, but then EQ got trapped in the mirror realm and so there were no playdates between Raven and Cerise.

After Red learned Cerise had befriended Raven, she felt happy. (EQ learned about their friendship either through the mirrors or after she got broken out of the realm)

I hate king charming with my entire heart and soul, but I can also mourn for the person he couldve become if he grew up in a different more accepting environment.

Okay but. Your opinion on the new album by Nothing but Thieves?

so you said TEA TIME!

To be honest! I don’t really like it! I’ve not been a huge fan of any of the singles that have been put out (I’ve needed a while for them to grow on me, is what I mean, my first impressions were not my fave). I’ve been dying to talk about this, so I’m going to go a bit overboard in my analysis :) ALSO: this is my favourite band of all time I listen to their music every day and have been doing so for years and even though I don’t like this album, it is important to note I really didn’t like NBT at first but grew to my current loooove status after my workplace played Broken Machine every day and I just... love Conor’s vocals! So it could be that this album just needs to grow on me.

1. Is Everybody Going Crazy

First single released, my first impression was wowza this is a bit poppy, but it was catchy, and I like this song (so much I learned how to play it)! Reminded me a bit of songs I don’t love as much on the other albums like Live Like Animals and Ban All the Music (tho I still like these songs, just not as much as others). Have played this many times when I had the aux.

2. Real Love Song

Second song released, and my first impression was: I like! Sounds more like The Killers than typical NBT but I’m not mad at that in the slightest! Lyrically not my fave of their discography but a very fun song. I bought the alternative version because I like it so much (alternative version is gorgeous). Def put this song on if I had the aux.

3. Unperson

I think this was the third single? I listened to it once, was so confused and didn’t listen to it again for a few more weeks (to me it sounded like NBT, The Strokes, Paramore and Panic! at the Disco all in one song lol). This one is catchy after a while but I still don’t like the chorus because it sounds a lot like Panic! at the Disco (no shade to P!ATD I just don’t love that particular sound). I do like the energy however and this song has grown on because it is catchy despite the problems I have with it! I’ve written many scenes while listening to this song. If I had the aux, I probably wouldn’t put this song on!

4. Impossible

Ohhhh Impossible! Fourth single, and probably my least favourite! I think this song to me has the least lyrical intricacy I’m used to seeing in NBT’s work, and while I’m so happy to see some more upbeat/happy work, I think some of the production in the chorus (the backing vocals! it’s really the backing vocals!) is just too cheesy for me. This gives me NBT wedding song vibes, which is not my fave vibe, but I can see why others love it! Despite it being my least favourite of the singles, I actually do listen to this song because I like it (but I don’t like it does this make any sense) and it’s not my least favourite song of theirs by any means, it just doesn’t seem like NBT (I hate to say that since I love seeing them branch out, but I hope y’all catch my drift). The live Abbey Road session was a lot of fun and I watched it many times! Also I can’t help but hear the My Beloved Monster riff when I listen to this song! Probably wouldn’t reach for this at first when I have the aux because of the cheesiness. VERY cool music video!

5. Phobia

I LOVE this song and have been obsessed with it since it came out. I love the distinctive three parts and the buildup. It has the quiet vibe I love in If I Get High, Tempt You (Evocatio) and Graveyard Whistling while still having that FUN intensity at the end like in Forever & Ever More and I Was Just A Kid. Not exactly their usual sound right in the beginning (Billie Eilish vibes) but I think this experimentation was very well done. My favourite on the album!

As for the rest of the songs, the truth is I haven’t listened to them very much. I think the boys have done some really cool stuff with experimenting from their “usual” sound (if u heard Can You Afford to Be An Individual you KNOW), but I def think it’s a case of “I need to listen to this a lot more for it to grow on me” (which TO BE FAIR is the only reason I love NBT now because I really didn’t like their sound at all and I say this with the utmost love and as someone who has converted many NBT haters <3).

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I think a main problem I might have with this album is the production & drums. No shade at all because I think they’re individually well done, but put together with Conor’s vocals, everything for me doesn’t seem to fit. I think this to me was proven when I watched their liveshow Thursday where they performed Free If We Want It and it was soooo much better live than in the recording since the production was a lot less intense. I think I’m also missing some of the Buckley x Muse vibes I usually get from their work that has moved into its own sound of NBT even in songs that don’t “sound typically” NBT, like You Know Me Too Well and Soda). I absolutely am not looking for them to make the same music forever and think it’s important artists’ sound change as they change as a band--so I’m not saying that! I guess I’m just missing them same charged intention I feel when I listen to their other work (which again to be fair I didn’t like/appreciate until MONTHS of listening to their music at work hahaha and I am now obsessed and their songs never get old).

Of their entire body of work, it was impossible for me to rank a favourite (I love Broken Machine, the self titled album and What Did You Think When You Made Me This Way) equally and differently in so many ways, but I unfortunately think it would be easier for me to rank Moral Panic because it’s just underwhelmed me on first listen. This might also be because they released so many singles (about half the album) which absolutely makes sense because of the pandemic, however, I think took away from me being able to find some “gems” among the songs I don’t like as much (the songs that were left when the album released, at least for me) so those songs just don’t have as much of a chance as they possibly could have had they only released 2 or 3 singles.

AGAIN to be fair, this is the exact reaction I first had listening to NBT so it may grow on me as I hear the beautiful intricacies in each song, but for now, I’m sticking to the older stuff! Waiting for my tour t-shirt and signed album to come in the mail tho!!! Love NBT! My mom also loves NBT!! She made me watch three versions of If I Get High with her on the TV last night and they were all great! so! NBT is still great, this album is just not my fave!

My Decade in Ships

In no particular order :P

True Blood: Eric and Sookie - both Books and Show!

I shipped these two from when I started reading the books. I prefer the book version up until a certain point, rather than the show. Show gave too much importance to Bill, whereas in the books, Bill was shown to be a traitor and manipulated Sookie a lot. Eric was genuine with Sookie. I’m so glad we got to see amnesia Eric in like...Season 4 of TB.

TVD: Damon and Elena aka Delena

I shipped this from the books too, although the show is miles different from the books! I never thought that she had that spark with Stefan that she had with Damon, so I’m glad that he ended up with the girl in the end...even though Elena is a dumb character and Nina annoys me haha.

Arrow: Oliver and Felicity

I shipped it before *it* was really happening. I loved their dynamic together in those early seasons. When Oli slipped her the needle, after saying that he cared for her, I was freaking out thinking that it was alllllll a fake out. And I mean, it was. BUT Oli definitely had the feels for Felicity.

GOT: Jon and Dany

I was a firm believer in R + L = J from quite early on in GOT and while I fully believed that Jon was Dany’s nephew and it creeped me out a little bit, it wasn’t so weird in the world of Game of Thrones or for the Targaryen’s. So when it dropped that R + L = J was legit and canon I was over the moon! Now all I needed was for Dany and Jon to meet and fall in love and swoon...happy ever after!! And I almost got that until D&D fucked it all up! But Jonerys was like my first major major ship that wasn’t canon that I truly believed in, that finally became canon only for it to end in tragedy...still doesn’t make sense!

GOT: Arya and Gendry

Well, I definitely did NOT ship this from the beginning. It was somewhere around Season 4-ish, just before the premiere and I did a re-watch and things changed for me...I was like, wait! Arya is totally into him! So I was proud as punch when they reunited...and Gendry was totally blown away by her and the woman she had become!! It was quite cute watching them flirt around each other! And I’m super chuffed they got their one night together. I was hoping that at the end of it all, Arya would have gone to Gendry and they could have lived together, happily ever after. When you think back to their earlier interactions, she said that him not having a title or status didn’t mean anything to her...and that is 100% true, but now that he did have a title, I was still hoping that she would accept him and marry him. But no :( :( It wasn’t to be...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: Skye and Ward

I was late to the AoS bandwagon and by the time I got around to watching it, I had already seen some spoilers of Ward’s betrayal...and I was confused. I didn’t want to like him or love them together...but I couldn’t help it. I wish that they could have been together properly :(

Star Wars: Rey and Kylo/Ben aka Reylo

I hadn’t put much thought into it to be honest. I seen TFA and was interested in their dynamic but hadn’t thought more. I went to TLJ and I left the theatre a full blown Reylo...came home to Tumblr and was lost in the Reylo world and fandom that I didn’t even know existed before! I never believed that they were related...that didn’t make sense to me at all. And even if TRoS went a different way, we still have that connection between them in TLJ. BUT TRoS went above and beyond my expectations...I never expected it to become canon!! But Rey and Ben!! They love each other!!

Charmed: Harry and Macy

These two...this one snuck up on me. I liked Harry. I liked Macy. Never thought of them together...but then their dynamic and chemistry...blew my mind!

NCIS: LA: Deeks and Kensie

Totally shipped this before it was a thing, so when they got together I was sooo excited! I’m glad that it didn’t change the dynamics of the team at all too like it usually does when 2 people get together. But it was also good when they paired them up with the others.

TVD: Klaroline aka Klaus and Caroline

Ohhhh these two, these two had some major chemistry!! I wanted them to be together sooo badly! And I had high hopes for it when TVD finished, that Caroline would eventually find her way to Klaus after she got over the headbreak of losing Stefan and she could find happiness with Klaus again. I haven’t actually watched the rest of the Originals so I have no idea what happens...I’ll watch it eventually haha

Criminal Minds: JJ and Reid

Ohhhh....I’ve been wanting this one for a while now! I’ve always felt they’ve had a great friendship, that, if given the opportunity could have grown into something more, but JJ was married and she was happy. BUT this latest season...WOWZA! I can’t wait to see where that goes next season!

Decision making on the Internet: Unit Ten

Decision making on the internet, Monday July 25th

My intention of this journal article is to share what I learned about satirical (meaning humorous, exaggerated, or not real) reviews online. Specifically, we looked at reviews for amazon products.

Each member of my group chose a different amazon item and posted at least three satirical reviews. I found these to be funny and shows how passionate people are about leaving reviews for products. They really let their personalities shine, and I found these posts to be most popular (having the most likes or upvotes).

I didn’t realize how often I see these types of reviews and base my decision to get products off of them. After reading a review that is passionate and positive about a product, I feel more inclined to get it. The same goes for the other way around. If a review is passionate about letting people know that they should not get a product and shares an interesting story about how their experience was bad for them, I probably will move on and find something else.

Something that is important to think about when making decisions about products online is to check how many people have actually left reviews. If the product is rated a 5 out of 5, but there are only 25 reviews, it may be worth to see what the negative reviews say.

The product I chose was “Monster Energy Zero Ultra” energy drink. The reviews were funny and probably motivated by the caffeine. I will end this post with the reviews at the end. I hope that you find them funny too!

And as such, I cannot praise it any higher. It is my constant companion and my morning kick in the butt. In the three years I have been doing this, I have still not gotten bored with it. It gets me through my morning most days until I can get another can of something else. But this is "THE CAN OF BREAKFAST" (5 stars)

Do yourself a favor, spare the concussion, and reach for a thirst-quenching, body-jolting, surge of orange power sent from Thor himself, that is Monster Ultra Sunrise. Your brain cells will thank you for it. This drink of the gods goes down smoother than an oiled up fat kid on a slip-n-slide, and it's just the metaphorical kick to the face you need to start your day. You won't even realize the fact that it's 0 calories, because you'll be too busy curling oak trees, and doing back flips uphill. This stuff will have you feeling so good, you'll ask "Am I dreaming?" To which Zeus will reply "nah bro, you're just drinkin' Valhalla Nectar, now go out and surf the Pacific ocean." At first you'll be confused, because you've never surfed a day in your life. But just then, Monster Ultra Sunrise imbues you with the power of whoever the Tony Hawk version of surfing is, and before you know it, you're high-fivin' Poseidon while you're shreddin' harder than Gordon Ramsay with a cheese Grater. There's really not much else to say. If you wanna win the Indy 500, then grab your Monster Ultra Sunrise, grab your helmet, and get your horse. Who needs 4 wheels when you got 4 hooves. With Monster Ultra Sunrise, the sky is NOT the limit, because there IS no limit, and we're takin' this pony to the moon." (5 stars)

Skam Italia episode 10 reaction

so nice of Alice to ask Eva on a date!

Episode 10

Clip 1 - Eva coming for Martino

I feel it’s so fitting for this marshmallow sweetheart Eva to start off leaving comparatively non-confrontational messages for Martino that only escalate when he doesn’t answer, instead of jumping straight to “ISAK PICK UP YOUR DAMN PHONE NOW” (RUN BOY RUN)

So Eva and Gio seem to be pretty relaxed and comfortable during this conversation about Martino considering their precarious relationship status - like they actually go somewhere else together and sit down, and there’s not a ton of space between them. His body language is pointed toward her. That’s nice that it’s not awkward, but I don’t know how I feel about it narratively, considering there probably should be some tension?

It makes some sense in that Gio seemed like he still wanted to be with Eva when talking to her at the skate park - he put it more on her shoulders, did she still want to be with him? With Jonas there was that “come find me when you find out” but overall it felt more frayed on his end even if he loved her.

But I loved that awkward goodbye kiss! That little customary gesture that’s suddenly got a lot more weight to it as they’re navigating this in-between stage. They’re kinda still dating but they’re kinda not, you know?

Clip 2 - Silvia and Eva in the bathroom

Note that this clip takes place later than the original version, which was paired with the period blood letter and took place right after the Jonas conversation where he asks who Eva is - Vilde asks her the same thing (theeeeme) and Eva bursts out in frustration at the question later talking to Isak. It was overall a more fraught time for Eva, since it was before her reconciliation with Ingrid and smoothing things over with Iben, was thinking she might have to switch schools and had some tension with her new friends after Vilde turned her past into a group presentation. This scene here happens after almost all of those problems have been smoothed over except for her relationship with Gio (which is less awkward than Eva’s with Jonas) and with Silvia (who apologizes during this clip). With that in mind, it’s more comfortable and less fragile.

It also takes the place of the scene where Vilde puts on a fake happy face in the cafeteria and lies to the girls about being with Pepsi Max.

Awww, it’s really nice that Silvia apologized to Eva. And the comment about how she gets used to people hating her is spot-on. it’s worth noting that this is the second time in a short period that Silvia has botched things with a group of girls, and who knows how many times before that.

But again, where does this leave us in terms of a firm arc for Eva? Once more they’ve cut out the thread/theme of who-is-Eva by not having Silvia ask it. Which I don’t inherently mind but I would like there to be a solid line of her character going from point A to point B, like I want there to be, for lack of a better term, a thesis statement about what this season was really about, since that was a strong point of the original S1. But I feel like we won’t know for sure until that final scene with Giovanni.

The original scene lands the point about Eva’s identity, this scene is more about setting up the group reconciliation with Silvia.

Clip 3- Awkwaaaaard

Similar to the first clip of the episode, Eva and Gio’s relationship here feels much less awkward than Eva and Jonas at this stage

Gio intentionally approaches her and makes conversation instead of literally bumping into her as Jonas did to Eva. It’s neutral small talk for the most party, and slight inquiries about Martino, it’s not digging deeper, but it still feels like they’re pretty chill.

That made the fight seem more out of nowhere, though? With this scene, they feel so comfortable that Gio suddenly shoving Fede didn’t feel right, they were on more stable ground. Like I would’ve bought his appearance suddenly creating the awkwardness between Gio and Eva, and Gio having to excuse himself, but not the 0 to 100 in two seconds here.

It doesn’t help that we didn’t see Gio react until he shoved Fede, like the way it was shot was a little weird. At first I couldn’t tell when Gio saw Fede coming down the hall and if Fede made the comment within earshot of them, since we didn’t get a good reaction shot of Gio to Fede’s presence. Plus having Jonas notice P-Chris and get tense was what prompted the “awkward” comment in the first place. Fede just seems like a shit-stirrer, lol.

Lmao, Edoardo did nothing to break up this fight. He redirected Fede with one hand to keep walking, that was it. On the one hand William gradually descending the stairs to halfheartedly remove Chris from Jonas was the best thing he ever did, but on the other hand, Edoardo not giving a shit at all is funny in itself.

You can preface every feminist discussion with 10 paragraphs of clarifying that you don’t hate men and they still won’t care and you’ll just have wasted time and energy coddling anti-feminists that could have been spent on the important issues. For real, don’t bother.

Eva suggesting that the party sounds like a Sapphic shindig and Alice being like “Who said that isn’t the solution?” just ramped up the flirtiness, wowza. Although the line about “sounds like [lesbian night]” was translated a few different ways, using language that was, uhhh, not as neutral as lesbian. I can’t speak to whether it was as offensive in Italian, though.

I forgot, did they say that Alice wrote the message in the bathroom stall? It’s not super important since any gossipy person at school could have written it, but since it substituted for the period blood letter, I’m just curious.

Oh geez. So in the original, Isak lets Eva guess why he ratted her out. There has been a lot of meta and discussion as to whether he wanted Eva to guess the truth, take it off his hands, get it all out. It’s when she guesses that he likes her that he runs with the lie. Here, Martino is the one to say he has feelings for her. He creates the lie. There’s no ambiguity as to whether he wants the truth to come out.

I mean, honestly? I could believe that they changed to the plot to be about Martino having feelings for Eva. I don’t think they will, but I could buy it. Because Martino doesn’t seem like he’s lying, it’s like he’s getting things off his chest. With Isak, he wasn’t being too obvious that he was making stuff up, but on a rewatch you can tell that he’s fabricating this story, especially due to the nuance of Tarjei’s acting. Isak is a liar but he’s not necessarily good at it. He’s human. What he gives is an imitation of swagger and Nice Guy-ism. I don’t get much self-doubt in Martino’s performance.

That’s not to say he’s a bad actor, actually I think he’s one of the better performers on this show, but I did think this conversation was underwhelming compared to the original. There’s such great subtext and especially vulnerability in that scene - they cut out some great moments, such as Eva asking how things were going with his mom before confronting him and us getting to see Isak faking his confidence that everything will work out with his parents. Or Isak saying Eva can’t tell Jonas. Or just the extended explanation of why he did it.

Plus you can really see Isak squirm as Eva pretends she’s gotten back with Jonas, like she’s playing with her food, and this scene didn’t have that delicious build-up.

Was there a reason why Eleonora couldn’t host Silvia at her place? Like logically I know it’s because they wouldn’t introduce the collective yet, if they’re keeping that, but surely it would be OK to bring Silvia back to a residence with no parents, just two quirky university students? Is Eleonora’s living situation going to be the same?

Sana had a very clear game plan on how to handle the situation, good for her.

Lol, I think this scene inherently loses something without the ironic Christmas music but it was funny to have “I wanna be a bottom feeder” right before Silvia barfs on Sana. Sana’s reactions were pretty good.

When the puking started, I wondered whether they would show Sana without her hijab, and then they did.

OK ... I’m not a Muslim so I don’t want to get too much into this, but:

Sana taking off her headscarf as a mark of her comfort around the girls is a sweet gesture, and from what I understand from reading Muslims’ thoughts, this is OK to do and it’s likely that she wouldn’t get in the bed and fall asleep in her hijab. So that’s fine.

But in a meta sense, I did think oh right ... we’re getting this moment because the actress is not Muslim, and this is a costume for her and she can take it off. Whereas with someone like Iman Meskini, it’s not (according to her personal religious beliefs). There was a few (just a few, not many) comments I saw that were like “Sana’s hair is so pretty, she shouldn’t cover it up” which made me go :/ :/ :/

“I was just trying to kill Edoardo’s son” uhhhh is that an accurate translation? Because that’s kinda different from “I think I killed William’s baby,” there’s way more intent with the Italian one and it changes how I view Silvia’s opinion on the matter. Like I sort of thought a part of Vilde wanted that baby, for not so great reasons, and that’s why she was insistent with the nurse that she had all the pregnancy symptoms. But you know, maybe not!

Also, “I tried to kill Edoardo’s son” and the scene ending abruptly with a BAM could be like, a cliffhanger for a crime show if we want to make Skam a much grittier and bleaker show.

General Comments:

I’m wondering about how they’ll handle S3. I think S2 has the potential to be better than the original, but so far the portrayal of Martino has been lacking a lot of that vulnerability that Isak had and the conversation with Eva in this episode reinforced that. Again, I’m not placing the fault on the actor, and obviously we’re just getting started with the character, I just hope they can dig deep into his self-doubt when they come to it.

I’m trying not to get into the debate about this since it’s not my culture, but because I keep seeing comments in the Sana casting debate about the potential lack of Muslim actors in Italy, for comparison:

Alcohol chain retailer BevMo! has doubled its non-alcoholic beer brand offerings since February, Amy Gutierrez, BevMo category manager for beer, told Good Beer Hunting in December 2019. “It’s not just St. Pauli Girl or Beck’s,” she said. “These are truly crafted beers with new flavors and I think that’s really what [customers] love. They are purchasers who don’t just buy one six-pack or one 12-pack. They buy entire cases.”

In the past week, several “light” craft beers and hard seltzers have hit the market: Deschutes Wowza Lo-Cal Hazy Pale Ale. Maui Brewing Co. released Mosaic Lite Session IPA. Bell’s Brewery launched Light Hearted (a 3.7 percent ABV, 110-calorie version of its dominating Two Hearted Ale) in 19.2-ounce stovepipe cans. And many more.

These add to the long list of low-calorie, low-alcohol light craft beers on the market, and the dozens of craft hard seltzer brands that continue to roll out across the U.S. All hover around 100 calories and between 4 and 5 percent ABV.

As Paste reports, this looks a lot like the session IPA trend. The difference is calories. Session beers were (and are) marketed as having all the flavor of craft ales with less alcohol, so one could theoretically drink them all day without sacrificing deliciousness. Still, the concept of balancing flavor with sessionability has gone out the window for straight-up calorie counts. This is written on the light craft labels themselves, many of which prioritize phrases like “99 Calories” or “Low Cal. High Haze.” on the package more than the brewery or beer name itself. (Those were Mother’s Brewing Courage Partner IPA, and Oskar Blues One-y IPA, respectively.)

Although it may seem like all we can talk about are lower-alcohol, lower-calorie beers, this doesn’t reflect what American beer consumers are buying. According to IRI, volume sales of higher-alcohol craft beers 7 percent ABV and up grew 10.5 percent in the first half of 2019. “Sessionable,” low-alcohol brands didn’t grow at all.

So, I’ll embrace the change, and continue intermittently sipping beers with low calorie counts — I’m not getting any younger or thinner, either — but I’ll have my cake stout and drink it, too.

I absolutely LOVE cloth diapering. I never imagined how much I would enjoy it! I mean, they are diapers after all.

How it All Got Started

My husband and I decided the summer before my son was born to go the cloth diaper route. Initially my reason for looking into it was cost savings.

Before researching cloth diapers, I was doing a cost analysis of a list I had made for everything I thought we needed for the baby. I actually researched approximately how many diapers we might need in the first year and the cost was staggering. It was something like $1,500. Wowza!

Interestingly enough, both my mother and my husband’s mother cloth diapered with us, but didn’t like it. They both thought we were crazy for considering it, seeing it as unnecessary in this day and age. (They have been surprised at the options now available compared to 30 years ago!)

Before I actually decided cloth was for us, I decided to look into how I might save money buying disposable diapers. I read some crazy articles about constantly watching out for sales at six different stores, and buying in bulk and creating stock piles of different sized diapers and such. Those articles I read mentioned how I never needed to pay more than $.17 per diaper – a deal which I couldn’t find on my own as I have yet to learn the art of couponing. (A work in progress.)

There were a few things that made this approach unappealing for me, not the least of which was the uncertainty of just HOW MANY diapers I would need. If I was to stockpile diapers of various sizes, how was I to know what was enough…or worse, too many. It seemed easy to fall into the trap of wastefulness once again.

Another reason I didn’t want to go this route was because I’m not a big fan of shopping. Oh yes, I love to go shop for a new dress for myself, a gift for my husband, or toys for my son every now and then – and motherhood has certainly made me appreciate those trips to the grocery store as a way of “getting out of the house”. However, the thought of watching for sales like it was my job, and bouncing around from store to store looking at clearance sales was almost stressful for me. I do love online shopping though.

Not What I Expected

So my search for the most cost effective and easiest diapering method led me to cloth diapering. Let me be honest that this did not appeal to me at all at first. I decided to really do my due diligence, and pressed on. I read article after article, and blog post after blog post.

I needed to know HOW to cloth diaper. I had never even seen a cloth diaper before! I quickly realized there were several types of cloth diapers, so I had to read to overcome that learning curve as well. Then, I needed to know WHICH cloth diapers were best. What type? What brand?

When I started my research, I was fully expecting to learn how to use a large safety pin (just like I had seen in stork bringing the baby cartoons), to pin in a towel that I was attaching to my baby. I expected to learn the trick of pinning this towel without sticking him, and then I imaged my child crinkling about as he sported the plastic pants I’d inevitably be buying for him.

Three things surprised me, as I began my cloth diapering education:

I was surprised that all these women whose articles I was reading, truly loved cloth diapering.

I was surprised at all the different cloth diaper options out there. It’s not like it was 30 years ago when we were babies.

I was surprised at how easy clothing diapering truly is.

Here are 5 Reasons Why I LOVE Cloth Diapering!

Cost Savings. I could go into great detail about how many of which type of cloth diaper is better. Naturally since there are different types of diapers, the prices vary. For the super thrifty, cloth diapers can even be purchased used from second hand stores, other crunchy mamas, and online marketplaces. The cheapest option I found is using prefolds with covers. The concept here is that the cover can be used multiple times (2-4x) and the prefold diaper replaced at each changing. To get started, I bought 36 prefolds (12 in a smaller size and 24 in a larger size), and 6 covers. From my experience this was probably more than I needed. The covers were about $15 to $25 each new. (I bought two different brands and the characters and prints may vary.) The prefolds were about $25/dozen. I also got a few special inserts to help with extra absorbency to get us through the night. For convenience only, I have since purchased (used from a second-hand store) “all-in-2” diapers, in which an absorbent insert is put in a shell, and this entire package is used once before washing. These were about $7 each. (If you decide to buy 2nd hand, I do recommend stripping the diapers first. Click here for great information on stripping diapers. With all these diapers, I can go 3 or 4 days between washes, so I only do two extra loads of laundry a week. So, with the diapers, and diaper paraphilia (diaper pail, diaper pail liner, and wet bags, and diaper sprayer (not needed until my baby started solids), and the modern day “safety pin”, snappies!), my cost to get started was about $400.

Versatility. One of my cousins asked me what my theme was regarding purchasing baby items. When I asked her what she meant, she said, “Like for me, I wanted things that were easy!” “Oh,” I replied. “I want things that last me as long as possible – from as early on after birth to toddler hood, if possible.” And THAT is precisely what cloth diapers do! Many cloth diapers come in “one size”. The ones I purchased are for children 8-35 pounds. (8 pounds? But what about babies who are born smaller than 8 pounds? Honestly, I used disposable newborn diapers with my son for the first several weeks. They do have cloth diapers that are made especially for newborns, but since this stage is so short, and there are meconium (sticky, dark, tar-like substance) poops in the beginning that are difficult to clean and can easily stain cloth diapers, I decided to use disposable at first.) However, since that stage we have loved using our Rumparooz diaper covers with snaps and prefolds!

Durability and Absorbency. My husband and I recently took a trip out of state, and to avoid taking an extra suitcase just for cloth diapers, we went ahead and bought a small pack of disposable diapers. Although they served their purpose, they were so much more flimsy than the cloth diapers we have come to depend upon. My husband and I both agreed that anytime my son urinated, the pee smell was much stronger than when he is wearing cloth diapers. The disposables seemed to be plenty absorbent. When my son did do the dreaded “number two”, the smell was much more pungent than with cloth. Throwing it in the trash wasn’t enough to mask the smell even though it has a lid. It needed to be tossed in the dumpster outside! His cloth diapers, though, work wonderfully at preventing blowouts. I remember when my son was only a few weeks old, how the mess would escape his newborn disposables. Yucky! The cloth diapers are also incredibly strong and can last through several baby bums worth of diapering. I will say that not every brand is created equal. I have not been particularly impressed with the Bummis brand cover with velcro. The velcro has not shown itself to have the same quality as the other brands with velcro I purchased. Thirsties Duo Wrap hook and loop have been great diaper covers and the velcro still looks like new after 10 months of use. (We use velcro covers at night to get a more fitted diaper and better control leaks – aka No Leaks!)

Adorability! Anyone who has ever seen a baby in just a diaper has probably said, “Cute!” Cloth diaper takes the diapered bum up to a whole new level of ADORABLE! With so many cloth diapering types and brands, a diaper has now become a cute accessory and a part of an outfit. There are so many color choices, not to mention fun designs and characters.

Better for Sensitive Skin. My son has very sensitive skin, which we expected even before he was born as both my husband and I do also. Cloth diapers, when washed properly, are a terrific option for babies who experience diaper rashes. In our recent experience with disposables, my son had a bout of diaper rash which quickly healed once we were back home and he went back to his cloth diapers. If you are using cloth and do need a cloth diaper friendly diaper rash cream, I recommend using the all natural version of Boudreaux’s Buttpaste (green tube). It’s worked very well for my son.

So if you’re just starting out as a first time parent, or maybe have already started down the road of disposable diapers well into your third kiddo but are curious about cloth diapering, go ahead and take the plunge. Even if you just buy one or two to get you started so you can see how they work and compare to disposable, this is a great start! All I can say is I have not been disappointed in the decision to go cloth!
