Sofreh, 4701 E 3rd St., Los Angeles (East Los Angeles), CA 90022
Tumblr media
Sofreh serves kabobs and Persian/Mediterranean food in an area dominated by Mexican restaurants. They may have opened during the pandemic because the seating is all outdoors (and covered). Order at the walk-up window and get a buzzer. The buzzer will let you know when your order is ready for pickup.
The menu includes kabobs (lule, lamb chops, beef shish, chicken shish), shawarma, salads, pita wraps, and appetizers (hummus, baba ganoush, tzatziki, fries, soups). Portions were generous though the takeout items could have been packaged better. The trays didn’t have compartments so the salad that was next to my sandwich made part of the pita soggy.
Chicken shawarma wrap combo ($15): wrap sandwich, salad (or fries), and a drink. There were only three options for drinks: Coke, Sprite or bottled water. The chicken shawarma was so tender, maybe the most tender chicken shawarma that I’ve ever had. I also really enjoyed the sharwarma spicing and the sauce. The shawarma was served in a warm pita of medium thickness with lettuce, tomato, and pickles. So good. The salad was good (romaine, tomato, cucumber, onion) but it had been dressed so it was wilted by the time I got home.
Veggie platter ($18) with hummus, basmati rice, dolma, falafel, grilled tomato, grilled pepper, and pita wedges. They were stingy with the hummus. Mr. Froyo said the dolma were firm and tangy but bland. The falafel was different – less crispy and a bit spicy.
Parking was difficult to find. If you call or order in advance, they do have a parking space for picking up food.

This was my dinner birthday tonight (though not my photo, I borrowed it from an old restaurant review) at a local Persian restaurant called Sofreh. I loved it.
My wife and I went here years ago when it first opened and I liked but didn’t love it, except everyone loves it, and then my wife has been back multiple times with friends and also loved it. So yesterday, after a week-plus of being undecided about where to go tonight, I stumbled onto a cancellation on Resy and we went. With the kid. Who we were unsure would like it. But he loved it.
So just a win-win all around.

Kelly!! I’m going to NY for an extended work trip and my mind is SPINNING thinking about walking around the same places birdie and ez are, the nyc magic, feeling the love in the springtime air 🥹 I can’t remember but do you have a post sharing all the locations you mentioned or thought of while writing? Would love to walk in their footsteps 💕
omgomgomgomg — you are living my DREAM 😍 I’ve often daydreamed about going back and taking a sort of “In The Dark” tour
Here is the official In The Dark Guide:
Tumblr media
Chapter One:
NYU (Cee and Birdie's college)
The Guggenheim (Birdie's dream museum)
The Bean (the coffeeshop where Birdie and Cee eat lunch together for the first time)
Chelsea (the neighborhood Ezra's brownstone is in)
Chapter Four:
Chelsea Farmer’s Market
Strand Books (bookstore where Ezra corners Birdie)
Chapter Five:
Brighton Beach (neighborhood where Ezra scouts antiques)
Tribeca, Greenwich Village, West Harlem, Midtown (all neighborhoods)
Chapter Six:
Sofreh (Persian restaurant where Ezra celebrates his birthday, and drinks their signature cocktail: a Sekanjabin Martini)
Breads Bakery (French lunch stand in Bryant Park)
Chapter Seven:
The Library (punk bar in East Village)
Chapter Eight:
Central Park, the section along 59th and 6th, The Museum of Modern Art and La Bonne Soup (Ezra and Birdie's date weekend)
Chapter Nine:
The New York Public Library, East Wing (where Cee hides after finding out)
Chapter Ten:
The Museum of Modern Art (specifically the painting, The Dream by Henri Rousseau, which is actually also Pedro's favorite and he used to visit it a lot when he lived in NYC). Inside the museum, there is a section of windows that face a courtyard and that was where Ezra was pacing during his phone call with Birdie.
Chapter Eleven:
Hudson River Park, between 100th-125th St (cherry blossom lined paths where Ezra and Birdie walk)
The High Line (they also take walks here, you should def check this out)
Chapter Twelve:
NoMo SoHo (hotel where Ezra and Birdie spend their last night - it's gorgeous)
I think that's everything! A lot of the inspiration for this story came from just walking around the city with @krissology - the graffiti, the sounds, the endless streams of people, the architecture, the train, etc. A lot of the photos I used in my moodboards for this story were taken directly from my camera roll. ❤
If you end up going to any of these places, let me know!! I wish I could come with you and I hope you have a ton of fun! ❤

Cold Yogurt Soup / A’ab Doogh Khiar
From SOFREH: A CONTEMPORARY APPROACH TO CLASSIC PERSIAN CUISINE by Nasim Alikhani
Tumblr media
Similar to Spanish gazpacho, a’ab doogh khiar is a cold, blended, summer soup that uses yogurt and cucumber as a base instead of tomato. You can combine the cucumber-yogurt base with the mix-ins, as I have done here, or you can use my alternative method, which gives your guests the option of choosing those they like best. Either way, serve it with toasted bread or crackers for a snack or light lunch.
Makes 4 to 6 servings
4 to 6 pieces homemade or store-bought pita or naan bread, toasted Light olive oil for brushing 4 cups (907 grams) Homemade Yogurt or store-bought Greek yogurt Kosher salt to taste 2 garlic cloves, finely pureed 2 large good-quality cucumbers, such as Persian, English, or Japanese, skin on, finely diced 2 cups (214 grams) chopped walnuts 1 cup (160 grams) golden raisins or small red raisins 3 ounces (85 grams) fresh dill, leaves and tender stems, finely chopped 2 ounces (56 grams) fresh tarragon, leaves and tender stems, finely chopped 2 ounces (56 grams) fresh basil, leaves and tender stems, finely chopped ½ cup fresh mint leaves 2 tablespoons dried mint for garnish Rose petals for garnish
1 Preheat the oven to 375ºF. 2 Brush the bread with olive oil, place in a single layer on a baking sheet, and toast in the oven until crispy, about 10 minutes. 3 Add the yogurt, salt, and garlic to a mixing bowl and whisk well, adding a bit of water to loosen it (but don’t make it watery), then add the cucumbers, walnuts, raisins, dill, tarragon, basil, and mint leaves. Taste and adjust the seasoning. 4 Fill an 8-ounce (240-ml) glass with equal parts water and ice. Slowly add enough of the ice water to the yogurt mixture until it is the consistency of a thick soup. 5 Divide the mixture among 4 to 6 bowls, set some of the bread in each bowl, and garnish with dried mint and rose petals before serving.
Alternatively Combine the yogurt, salt, garlic, and cucumbers in a large bowl. Place a large, square ice cube in each of 4 to 6 bowls, as needed, and divide the yogurt mixture among the bowls. Garnish with the dried mint and rose petals, and set the walnuts, raisins, dill, tarragon, basil, and mint leaves on the table for your guests to add in as they wish.
