Entrepreneur creates career pathways with MIT OpenCourseWare
When June Odongo interviewed early-career electrical engineer Cynthia Wacheke for a software engineering position at her company, Wacheke lacked knowledge of computer science theory but showed potential in complex problem-solving.
Determined to give Wacheke a shot, Odongo turned to MIT OpenCourseWare to create a six-month “bridging course” modeled after the classes she once took as a computer science student. Part of MIT Open Learning, OpenCourseWare offers free, online, open educational resources from more than 2,500 courses that span the MIT undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
“Wacheke had the potential and interest to do the work that needed to be done, so the way to solve this was for me to literally create a path for her to get that work done,” says Odongo, founder and CEO of Senga Technologies.
Developers, Odongo says, are not easy to find. The OpenCourseWare educational resources provided a way to close that gap. “We put Wacheke through the course last year, and she is so impressive,” Odongo says. “Right now, she is doing our first machine learning models. It’s insane how good of a team member she is. She has done so much in such a short time.”
Making high-quality candidates job-ready
Wacheke, who holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Nairobi, started her professional career as a hardware engineer. She discovered a passion for software while working on a dashboard design project, and decided to pivot from hardware to software engineering. That’s when she discovered Senga Technologies, a logistics software and services company in Kenya catering to businesses that ship in Africa.
Odongo founded Senga with the goal of simplifying and easing the supply chain and logistics experience, from the movement of goods to software tools. Senga’s ultimate goal, Odongo says, is to have most of their services driven by software. That means employees — and candidates — need to be able to think through complex problems using computer science theory.
“A lot of people are focused on programming, but we care less about programming and more about problem-solving,” says Odongo, who received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and an MBA from Harvard Business School. “We actually apply the things people learn in computer science programs.”
Wacheke started the bridging course in June 2022 and was given six months to complete the curriculum on the MIT OpenCourseWare website. She took nine courses, including: Introduction to Algorithms; Mathematics for Computer Science; Design and Analysis of Algorithms; Elements of Software Construction; Automata, Computability, and Complexity; Database Systems; Principles of Autonomy and Decision Making; Introduction to Machine Learning; and Networks.
“The bridging course helped me learn how to think through things,” Wacheke says. “It’s one thing to know how to do something, but it’s another to design that thing from scratch and implement it.”
During the bridging course, Wacheke was paired with a software engineer at Senga, who mentored her and answered questions along the way. She learned Ruby on Rails, a server-side web application framework under the MIT License. Wacheke also completed other projects to complement the theory she was learning. She created a new website that included an integration to channel external requests to Slack, a cross-platform team communication tool used by the company’s employees.
Continuous learning for team members
The bridging course concluded with a presentation to Senga employees, during which Wacheke explained how the company could use graph theory for decision-making. “If you want to get from point A to B, there are algorithms you can use to find the shortest path,” Wacheke says. “Since we’re a logistics company, I thought we could use this when we’re deciding which routes our trucks take.”
The presentation, which is the final requirement for the bridging course, is also a professional development opportunity for Senga employees. “This process is helpful for our team members, particularly those who have been out of school for a while,” Odongo says. “The candidates present what they’ve learned in relation to Senga. It’s a way of doing continuous learning for the existing team members.”
After successfully completing the bridging course in November 2022, Wacheke transitioned to a full-time software engineer role. She is currently developing a “machine” that can interpret and categorize hundreds of documents, including delivery notes, cash flows, and receipts.
“The goal is to enable our customers to simply feed those documents into our machine, and then we can more accurately read and convert them to digital formats to drive automation,” Odongo says. “The machine will also enable someone to ask a document a question, such as ‘What did I deliver to retailer X on date Y?’ or ‘What is the total price of the goods delivered?’”
The bridging course, which was initially custom-designed for Wacheke, is now a permanent program at Senga. A second team member completed the course in October 2023 and has joined the software team full time.
“Developers are not easy to find, and you also want high-quality developers,” Odongo says. “At least when we do this, we know that the person has gone through what we need.”

Nelly Cheboi, who creates computer labs for Kenyan schoolchildren, is CNN's Hero of the Year

CNN — Nelly Cheboi, who in 2019 quit a lucrative software engineering job in Chicago to create computer labs for Kenyan schoolchildren, is the 2022 CNN Hero of the Year. Online voters selected her from among this year’s Top 10 CNN Heroes. Cheboi’s nonprofit, TechLit Africa, has provided thousands of students across rural Kenya with access to donated, upcycled computers — and the chance at a brighter future. Cheboi accepted the award with her mother, who she said “worked really hard to educate us.” At the beginning of her acceptance speech, Cheboi and her mother sang a song onstage that she explained had a special meaning when she was growing up. As CNN Hero of the Year, Cheboi will receive $100,000 to expand her work. She and the other top 10 CNN Heroes honored at Sunday’s gala all receive a $10,000 cash award and, for the first time, additional grants, organizational training and support from The Elevate Prize Foundation through a new collaboration with CNN Heroes. Nelly will also be named an Elevate Prize winner, which comes with a $300,000 grant and additional support worth $200,000 for her nonprofit. Cheboi grew up in poverty in Mogotio, a rural township in Kenya. “I know the pain of poverty,” said Cheboi, 29. “I never forgot what it was like with my stomach churning because of hunger at night.” A hard-working student, Cheboi received a full scholarship to Augustana College in Illinois in 2012. She began her studies there with almost no experience with computers, handwriting papers and struggling to transcribe them onto a laptop. Everything changed in her junior year, though, when Cheboi took a programming course required for her mathematics major. “When I discovered computer science, I just fell in love with it. I knew that this is something that I wanted to do as my career, and also bring it to my community,” she told CNN. Many basic computer skills were still a steep learning curve, however. Cheboi remembers having to practice touch-typing for six months before she could pass a coding interview. Touch-typing is a skill that is now a core part of the TechLit curriculum. “I feel so accomplished seeing kids that are 7 years old touch-typing, knowing that I just learned how to touch-type less than five years ago,” she said. Once she had begun working in the software industry, Cheboi soon realized the extent of which computers were being thrown away as companies upgraded their technology infrastructure. “We have kids here (in Kenya) — myself included, back in the day — who don’t even know what a computer is,” she said. So, in 2018, she began transporting donated computers back to Kenya — in her personal luggage, handling customs fees and taxes herself. “At one point, I was bringing 44 computers, and I paid more for the luggage than I did for the air ticket,” she said. A year later, she co-founded TechLit Africa with a fellow software engineer after both quit their jobs. The nonprofit accepts computer donations from companies, universities and individuals. The hardware is wiped and refurbished before it’s shipped to Kenya. There, it’s distributed to partner schools in rural communities, where students ages 4 to 12 receive daily classes and frequent opportunities to learn from professionals, gaining skills that will help improve their education and better prepare them for future jobs. “We have people who own a specific skill coming in and are just inspiring the kids (with) music production, video production, coding, personal branding,” Cheboi said. “They can go from doing a remote class with NASA on education to music production.” The organization currently serves 10 schools; within the next year, Cheboi hopes to be partnered with 100 more. “My hope is that when the first TechLit kids graduate high school, they’re able to get a job online because they will know how to code, they will know how to do graphic design, they will know how to do marketing,” Cheboi said. “The world is your oyster when you are educated. By bringing the resources, by bringing these skills, we are opening up the world to them.” Read the full article

NEW EA POLICY (the future of modding.)
So you probably heard what is being said, Early Access is no more, you support Modder's, cc creators, Animators out of the goodness of your heart and appreciation. Still waiting for Maxis to publish it though because it was not even mentioned in the policy.
Some creators have suspended their patreon accounts , some are still on the fence some are shwavy with it. Y'all know me I'm an Aries (mariam) I have phases, my tiktok phase, I created so many free tiktoks more than 100, and still made a living out of it because good people supported me anyway, and continue to this day.
I did not whine to Ozzy, a dude that literally does not even play the sims4 game... to learn xml and uncompiled the python files and then teach me how to mod, get me C++ course, Maya animation course, python course and an Android/apple development course(swift) just to Quit.
yes I have the IQ of a duck, ADHD, the memory of a gold fish....(no idea where I'm going with this) Quitting is dumb I have more than 30 fresh mod Ideas to do and complain to Ozzy about my code being shitty. I am releasing stuff for free until EA clears the early access rule that has not been touched on.
WHEN WILL I QUIT CREATING FOR SIMS4?
I may stop modding for the following reasons
when I start building robots with Ozzy and there is no time for sims.... I have a certificate in engineering, apparently when i was 19 I invented a portable heat pump that doubles up as a refrigerator and is self sufficient so I sold it for one grand....one grand is ALOT IN KENYA (don't you dare judge 19 year old me) (i will try to make time) Ozzy has a nasa diploma thingy

When Ozzy opens his car company and my job is to upholster/sew car seats , dashboards, steering wheels and interior parts. I am good at sewing leather. (And there is no time to mod, i will try to make time)
when my plants grow mouths, speak up and say stop.

Wait! hold up If I'm able to make software's and build robots would that not mean I can also create an automated software that makes it easier for me to mod, animate and create...Lot 51 Tdesc browser, sims4studio, zerbu mod constructor exist... so just the animating part and meshing, Motion capture and outsourcing. Mmmh, well if Ozzy can make time for me, help in modding and is the busiest dude I know, nothing may stop me from making you guys happy. BTW I've been electrocuted more than 10 times once I smelt something barbequed and I'm still alive, no one did it, I'm too stupid to not touch wires in the name if "fixing" so no quitting at modding.
love mariam.

Day 30- Back on the Water
Today we took our first tour, a snorkelling and dolphin boat trip in the Watamu National Marine Park and Reserve. It was a bit shocking to suddenly be spending the day with 20 other people. I was impressed that we were told that no single use plastic bottles were allowed to be brought into the park. (Single use plastic bags were banned in Kenya prior to 2020). The amount of plastic bottles littering the beaches, streets and wilderness areas throughout Kenya has been disappointing and overwhelming.
Our first destination was to find the dolphins. It was a bit like the Masai Mara of the Ocean, a number of boats all started to crowd the pod of bottlenose dolphins. I talked to our captain about the regulations and was glad to hear that there were some and then a few minutes later I spotted the Parks boat coming out to talk to those that were infringing on the dolphins space. That said, it was still beautiful to see them!
Our next stop was the reef for some snorkelling. Unfortunately, we forgot Oriana’s underwater camera which was so disappointing as I would love to be able to revisit the seascapes we swam through. Snorkelling from Shela was good but this was great! I don’t know the names of most of the fish but the colour and movement was spectacular and the amount and diversity of fish was impressive. The coral was washed out in most places but there were a few patches of the brightly coloured coral you hope to see return on mass in the future. My favourite spotting was an octopus that was tucking its self under a rock when I spotted it! There were lion fish (we didn’t get close), tons of parrot fish, angelfish, damselfish, butterflyfish, clownfish, pipe fish, blue stripped snappers, red snappers, puffer fish and so many more. We also saw a bunch more of the giant clams that we had seen in Shela. I don’t know how it is possible to get cold but eventually that is what took Tamsyn and I back to the boat. The girls both raved about what they saw and I am so proud of their ability to swim and snorkel. Mark has taught Oriana how to dive while snorkelling and so away she would go to have a closer look at something of interest.
By this time we had worked up an appetite and were excited to head up Mida Creek for lunch on a small island. This is tour life so our boat and four others pulled up to the island and walked the short distance to a covered area with about 20 tables. After we were served our drinks, the courses started to arrive. Prawns, King Fish and lobster were all on the menu! What a feast!
Although the food was good the highlight of the lunch was meeting a lovely family who were visiting from Nairobi. Their daughter Joy had recently moved to Toronto to work for a software engineering firm and so we instantly had a connection. They were the nicest people and had all kinds of insight on growing up in Kenya. When we were getting ready to head back to our boats, Eileen handed us a gift- a bowl with a carving of an Elephant and the word Jambo on it. She had been surprised that we had chosen Kenya of all of the vacation destinations in the word and wanted to be sure we wouldn’t forget out trip (how could we??). She mentioned that the word Jambo isn’t actually used by locals and is only used when interacting with tourists. I couldn’t believe it! Here I thought we had been so smooth in adopting a Swahili word for greeting others. I refused to use the word for the rest of the day!
On our way back to the beach we were lucky enough to see a few turtles but they were a fair distance so I’m not sure what type they were. When we arrived at the beach we headed to the tiger shark nursery. Typically you don’t want to be anywhere near a tiger shark but the babies are ok and you know that the mom’s aren’t around (they are on the other side of the reef) so it was very cool to walk into the water to observe them.
We were so full from lunch that, other than Mark, we weren’t hungry. As he was craving a hamburger and we just wanted some more of that amazing gelato, we headed out. The gelato place was closed so we tried the tex-med place that had a table with comfy looking chairs that was street level and therefore would allow for people watching. Mark and I started with margaritas and the girls had milk shakes. The margaritas came with a side of shots!? The bartender said that Tequila is just summer water with a side of lime. I think as far as the girls were concerned, the best part was the restaurant kitten. Finally they had a cat they could pet and cuddle. My highlight, the “boy band” (a bunch of young boys with a water bottle drum) that sang Jambo Bwana, a popular song heard throughout Watamu, to us from the road. Mark loved his hamburger and I think the onion rings were the best we have ever had! We ended up having an interesting conversation with the owner, a Frenchman, his wife (kenyan) and their son which just added to the success of the evening.

Huge Banks Mirror Nation’s Lopsided Financial Restoration: Stay Updates Right here’s what it’s worthwhile to know: The nation’s largest banks have all launched their monetary outcomes for the previous 12 months, and the info displays the unusual financial state of affairs going through the Biden administration. Components of the economic system are booming, others are at a standstill, and the outlook remains to be unsure. On the one hand, Wall Road’s core enterprise is flourishing: Goldman Sachs’s buying and selling operation reported its highest annual income in a decade, an element that helped the financial institution greater than double its fourth-quarter revenue. JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley additionally reported large jumps of their funding banking and buying and selling items after an enormous 12 months for bond points, preliminary public choices and M.&A. offers. However different banks with large consumer-lending arms didn’t fare as effectively, with Financial institution of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo lagging when it comes to revenue development. The low rates of interest that prompted corporations to boost debt have damage banks’ internet curiosity revenue on shopper loans, which fell year-on-year for many lenders of their newest outcomes. Few financial institution bosses seem to suppose that Wall Road-focused companies will carry out as effectively this 12 months, however worries about Important Road items appear much less acute than final 12 months. Within the fourth quarter, JPMorgan Chase launched almost $3 billion price of reserves that it had constructed as much as guard in opposition to mortgage defaults, whereas Financial institution of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo launched a mixed $2 billion in the identical interval. Over the course of the total 12 months, these 4 banks nonetheless added round $50 billion to their provisions in opposition to credit score losses, an indication that they continue to be on guard in opposition to a possible wave of defaults. Within the meantime, mortgage demand is low and deposits are piling up. What do banks plan to do with all that money? “We now have a lot capital, we can not use it,” Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan informed traders. The financial institution’s money pile has doubled over the previous 12 months, to greater than $500 billion. It’s an identical story at different banks, and now that they’ve been cleared by regulators to renew share buybacks, “we’re going to be aggressively shopping for again, and constantly,” mentioned James Gorman, Morgan Stanley’s chief govt. It had been the primary mega-film scheduled for the post-vaccine period. That honor now goes to the Marvel prequel “Black Widow” (Might 7), adopted by Common’s newest “Quick & Livid” installment (Might 28). The issue: No person is especially keen to check the market by going first — particularly not after what occurred to Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet.” Warner Bros. had tried to jump-start moviegoing in September by releasing “Tenet,” despite the fact that many theaters have been nonetheless closed and others have been working at restricted capability. The movie collected $363 million worldwide, a really respectable whole below the circumstances, however one which dissatisfied Hollywood nonetheless. (Mr. Nolan’s movies sometimes acquire greater than double that quantity.) Extra not too long ago, “Surprise Lady 1984” has taken in an anemic $143 million worldwide, with its immediate availability on-line in the US undercutting ticket gross sales, together with worry in regards to the resurging virus. Loon was one of the vital hyped “moonshot” know-how initiatives to emerge from Alphabet’s analysis lab, X. The concept behind Loon was to deliver mobile connectivity to distant elements of the world the place constructing a conventional cell community can be too tough and too pricey. Alphabet promoted the know-how as a probably promising technique to deliver web connectivity to not simply the “subsequent billion” shoppers however the “final billion.” Google began engaged on Loon in 2011 and started a public check in 2013. Loon turned a stand-alone subsidiary in 2018, a couple of years after Google turned a holding firm known as Alphabet. How to Make a Full-Time Income Online - From Home - Using Free Classified Ad Posting Sites
If you're familiar with search engine optimization and conduct do a search using the phrase "making money online," some of the popular keyword phrases that pop up are "make 100 dollars a day online;" "make 100 a day;" and "$100 per day from free on line work." The thing is, making $100 a day online is relatively easy to do using free classified ad sites like Backpage, Craigslist, Kijiji, etc.
As a side note, one reason the $100 per day mark is so popular is because it will allow many to make a full-time living online. After all, it is a tidy little sum of $3,000 per month; $36,000 per year. This is more many make at their full-time jobs.
Following is a three-step plan for making $100 a day online using free classified ad posting sites.
1. Choose a "Hot" Product: No matter which free classified ad posting site you use, you must choose a popular product/service. You can place ads until the cows come home, but if nobody wants it, then you're not going to make (very many) sales.
Note: Go to ClickBank to find products to promote. While there's a lot of junk there, there are also some gems. You just have to do your homework. Read the site guidelines to learn how to determine what a good product is to promote. And of course, you can always produce and promote your own products.
2. Place Ads Consistently: This is where many who are new to selling online fall down - they get frustrated because they're not making the sales they want, then they stop placing ads and/or start researching other ways to make money online.
Placing free classified ads works - you just have to find a product that sales. So if one is not selling well, promote another one. Do this until you find one that produces consistent sales.
While placing ads can be time-consuming, the process can be automated using classified ad posting software. You can literally post hundreds of ads per hour using this type of software.
Ad Posting Tip: In my experience, you need to place 100-200 ads per day to make $100 per day using most free classified ad posting sites.
3. Make Believable Claims: Many who struggle to make $100 per day from free on line work like place classified ads never do so because they make outrageous claims, eg, "Make $500 in Just 2 Hours Per Day."
Most make these claims because those are the claims the creator of the product make. So, as an affiliate, they market the product that way.
Making $100 a Day Online: The Best Tip You'll Ever Get for Doing It Using Free Classified Ad Sites
When you see ads that say, "Make $1,000 Per Day;" or "Start Making Six Figures in Only a Few Hour/Day", do you believe them, or do you think that they're just hype by someone trying to sell you something?
Probably the latter, right?
If you think this way, many others do as well.
Why You Shouldn't Make Outrageous Claims When You Market on Free Classified Ad Sites
The truth is, it only takes a few hundred dollars per month to significantly change the lifestyle of most people. Most are not trying to "get rich overnight." They just want a way to pay off too much credit card debt, pay for summer camp for the kids, start putting a little away for retirement, etc.
Hence, making $100 a day online would be a dream for many. Most would settle for $25 or $50 extra dollars a day (an extra $750-$1,500 per month).
See why making outrageous claims in your quest to make $100 per day online is unnecessary? You turn off a lot of prospects when you do this.

Still trying to decide if I like this... via Core77
Neumorphism (from neo-skeuomorphism) is the latest style of designing digital interfaces. Shortly after it emerged last year--Designer Zero was Alexander Plyuto with his design for a mobile banking interface below, according to UX Collective--some claimed it would become a 2020 design trend, while others insisted "Neumorphism will NOT be a huge trend in 2020."
Alexander Plyuto
If a company as influential as Apple were to adopt neumorphism, the argument would be settled. And after they introduced their upcoming Big Sur OS update at WWDC, revealing changes to the icons that viewers quickly picked up on…

...it seems the trend will stick around, at least for a few years.
So what exactly is neumorphism? Think of it as a course correction, the design version of steering into the skid in an endlessly fishtailing car that still somehow manages to move forwards. I look at neumorphism as the fourth phase/movement/trend in the representative elements of graphic user interface design. To explain, when Apple came out with the first Macintosh in 1984, the icons looked like this:

Original Macintosh icons
Designer Susan Kare's task was to convey pictographic information with a minimal supply of pixels. She did this brilliantly.
By the time Apple came out with the first iPhone in 2007, the home screen looked like this:

iPhone OS 1
Those icons were all skeuomorphic, i.e. tiny renderings of things rather than icons, even if they kept the name "icon." Advances in digital design are partly about growing bored with the last style and partly about showing off the technology. These skeuomorphic icons say "Look at the resolution we can achieve with this handheld screen!"
After six years of this, Jony Ive apparently felt the car starting to slide, and steered into the skid to get it to slide the other way. In 2013 Apple revealed that they were going with the "flat" aesthetic for iOS 7:

iOS 7
Gradations were allowed, but no discrete highlights or shading. Everything was simplified or, as the name suggests, flattened. A dash of showing off, here and there: Look at the absurdly fine teeth on the gears for the "Settings" icon, the thinness of the numbers on the clock and calendar, the fineness of the reticle on the compass. These could only be achieved with the improved resolution of the evolving iPhone.
Which brings us to neumorphism. As the Input Mag article "Apple, Big Sur, and the rise of Neumorphism" explains,
"When you boil it down, neumorphism is a focus on how light moves in three-dimensional space…. What sets neumorphism apart from its progenitor is that the focus is on the light itself and how it interacts with a variety of objects in a purely digital space."
This style has been wielded and named by designers of speculative interfaces, often using very few to no colors at all. Some examples:

Filip Legierski

Voicu Apostol

Elena Zelova
Alexander Plyuto
At the risk of oversimplifying it, the aesthetic is very Kenya Hara. It's something between skeuomorphism and flat, but way closer to the (f)latter. It's clean, minimal, and the current examples stick rigidly to basic geometry, with the most advanced form being a squircle. And particularly with the inclusion of the Braun logo in the example above, you can see at least one source of inspiration.
At their recent Worldwide Developer's Conference, Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, pulled the sheet off of their forthcoming Big Sur OS update, hailing it as "our biggest update to design in more than a decade." The Big Sur icons revealed in the presentation look like this:

With the exception of the Calendar icon, all of them have shading and highlights from a consistent 12 o'clock light source. They're no longer flat, and are certainly not skeuomorphic, but they're moving back towards three-dimensionality, as seen in the word bubble of Messages, the Calculator, the Mac icon.
If we look at a side-by-side comparison of the Big Sur icons with the current ones, we can see even more clearly what Apple's doing:

They're doing away with irregular icon shapes, constraining them all within squircles. I suppose this is in an effort to reduce visual chaos, but to my eye, it will make the icons more difficult to distinguish from each other. This move isn't surprising; Apple has always prized aesthetics over UX.
In any case, with Apple tacitly endorsing neumorphism, we can expect to see the style popping up (no pun intended) all over the place.
