Eclipses Past:
Eclipse grew up in a small village with his friend, Solar. Solar and Eclipse were close and always seemed to get along out of the sight of the villagers. Eclipse always had admired Solar and his 'honesty', what he didn't know is that Solar was telling villagers behind his back to fuck up his life. Solar wasn't as honest or truthful as Eclipse had known, Solar wanted power. More than half the week Solar would disappear in the villages, leaving Eclipse to sit alone at the tree and work out on the branches of the tree. Usually, villagers would stop by and pull his hair and hit him with bats. He was surprised to see it wasn't going to happen that day, as Solar approached the tree. He sent Eclipse to go get something from the bakery. Once Eclipse had returned, Solar was holding one of the untouchable gold apples and scarrscarfing it down. Eclipse had dropped the delivery and rushed over to stop him, but just as he approached - he had been flung into a wall. Picking up the apple that had come with him, he took a small bite from it. He felt his veins weaken as Solar stared down at him. Solar had two pairs of golden and bronze wings before he flew towards Eclipse and slammed his head into the wall. Eclipse was already feeling weaker than before, and this did not help. Solar dug into the others' skin and began ripping out some of his ribs, in which Eclipse shrieked while Solar taunted him. Eclipse used the magic from the apple to pull himself into a portal, stumbling and weak on the floor. He did not look very well, as blood poured from the wounds and his head.

Blunders Past:
Blunder was a next-door neighbor to Cyanide. Occasionally, Cyanide would stop by Blundrrs house bearing gifts or peaking through hid windows. Blunder always felt unsettled by the other but labeled him Blue. For awhile, Blunder dealt with it and then went to confront Cyanide. Cyanide didn't appreciate that the other didn't like the fact that he just wanted to be friends, as Blunder got ready to move the next day. Blunder stopped by Cyanides house to say his goodbyes, going but as he opened the door there had been cyanide laying opened on thr counter, with Papyrus on the floor. Blunder stepped back, Blue coming from the room and waving. Blunder immediately booked it, and Cyanide chased him - begging for forgiveness. To this day, Cyanide searches for Blunder to ruin his new life for running away.

Sonic Heroes: Sweet or Shite? - Part 1: SILVER
There are some heroes I like. And there are some heroes I don’t like. But why do I feel about them the way I do? That’s where this comes in.
This is a series in which I go into slightly more detail about my thoughts on the heroes in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and why I think they either work well, or fall flat (or somewhere in-between). I’ll be giving my stance on their designs, their personalities, and what they had to show for themselves over the course of time. Two things to keep in mind:
1. These reviews will be focusing mainly on game portrayals. Though alternate media will occasionally be mentioned, it'll be for the sake of adding onto a point if a portrayal is similar enough, or to compare and contrast if a portrayal is different enough.
2. These are just my own personal thoughts. Whether you agree or disagree, feel free to share your own thoughts and opinions! I don’t bite. :>
Anyhow, for today’s installment, I decided to challenge myself by starting off with a complicated one. Born from the future, and never content to stay put in said future, it's the saviour whose debut came from the most unfortunate game... Silver the Hedgehog.
The Gist: Once upon a time, in the distant future, there was an idealistic young hedgehog named Silver, gifted with the power of telekinesis for reasons unknown. With his amazing potential, he was truly destined for a wonderful, prosperous li-just kidding, it was shit.
“All two of us.”
For as long as he knew, the world was forever plagued by Iblis, the terrible Flames of Disaster. Cities stood in ruin, flames stood high, the floor was lava... it was a bitter life to be certain, all thanks to Iblis. Not even defeating the titular creature did much good, since it would simply come back to be a shitty boss fight another day. What was he - and his friend, Blaze, a character we definitely never saw before and definitely didn't have a completely different backstory before - to do?
Trust the first person he sees, of course. Even if they look like they might be related to the same Flames of Disaster that he fights so constantly.
If he had eyelids, he'd be winking at the camera.
This mysterious fellow, Mephiles the Dark, informed Silver that if he were to wipe out Iblis for real, he would need to take a trip into the past, and eliminate the root of the problem... Sonic the Hedgehog? That was what Mephiles claimed, yes. What was his proof? There was no proof.
That was good enough for Silver.
Oh look, it's Fleetway Sonic.
After an elaborate series of events, which should sound exciting but really isn't because it was just Silver going “Iblis Trigger grrr” in varying tones of voice, he was finally able to corner the blue hedgehog... twice! And despite having less fighting know-how than the hero who saved the world plenty of times, he effortlessly came close to killing the blue hedgehog... twice!
This looks like a jobbing for...
Why twice? The first time was halted by Sonic's friend Amy Rose, who Silver had met beforehand after she mistook him for Sonic, an understandable mistake that even the keenest of eyes would be forgiven for making.
The second time was also interrupted, this time by Shadow the Hedgehog. There's only room for one controversial non-blue male hedgehog in this franchise, sonny boy. Actually, his reasons were more benevolent than that: he wanted to show Silver the truth about what was going on, by time travelling to the incident that gave birth to Iblis. Why was one able to to this, so long as more than one Chaos Emerald was present? No one knew.
That was good enough for Silver.
“I challenge you to a dumb-off.”
As it turned out, Iblis was one half of a sun god called Solaris, the other half being the aforementioned Mephiles. The Duke of Soleanna wanted to reunite with his late wife by harnessing Solaris' power, which succeeded from a certain point of view since he's dead now too. The resulting blunder split Solaris into two halves. One half was all brawn, with little capacity for intelligence. The other half was Iblis.
Understanding the error of his ways, and after making peace with Sonic, Silver went back to the future to try something different, which consisted of doing the same thing he always did. Luckily for him, the script decided it would work this time, albeit at the cost of Blaze sacrificing herself... Maybe? Sort of? It’s not entirely clear what happened to her, and it’s not like this was the last we ever saw of her.
~La laaaaaa, la laaaaaa, la laaaaaa, heading to a better game, la laaaaaa~
But ohhhhh nooooo, turns out THAT didn't solve anything either! In the present, Sonic was killed by Mephiles, after the latter realised he should probably do that already if he wanted to make any progress at all with his plan. This incident led to Iblis being brought into the present, and they fused to become the omnipotent Solaris once more. Such power... such divinity... such devastation...
Actually, he was really easy. The antlion from Underground Zone was harder.
Manchild robots - 1, god of time - 0.
With their super forms in tow, Silver, Shadow, and the revived Sonic joined forces to defeat Solaris, with Sonic in particular going the extra step in retconning Solaris out of existence entirely. Since time itself reset, meaning Iblis was no longer a memory, Silver's timeline was given a second chance. What was he to look forward to in this new, promising future?
Shit.
The Design: Let's take a closer look at Silver's appearance, shall we?
Or rather, a certain thing that's wrong with it.
He's holding up fifteen fingers.
Yes, you all know what I'm pointing to: the hairstyle. Let it be known that I'm very aware of the intention behind this design choice. It's supposed to be based on the Japanese Red Maple Leaf, which holds a lot of relevant symbolism for Silver's character. This is a fine idea in theory, and I can respect the intent and the creativity.
But here's the thing: If it looks like a ganja leaf, people are going to say it looks like a ganja leaf. I know some fans will gnash their teeth at me saying this, but the fact of the matter is that intentions and ideas, no matter how good they may be on paper, don't always translate well into the final product. Unleashed Secret Rings Black Knight Sonic '06 in general is certainly no stranger to showcasing examples of that, and Silver's hairstyle is no exception. There are ways to incorporate symbolism in a character’s design without making them look like meme bait in the process, and no amount of “umm ackshually” will change that, I'm afraid.
That said, there's another reason why I'm staying clean of Silver marijuana: it doesn't work for a hedgehog character. With the other hedgehogs, their hairstyles are simple and get the point across: Sonic's goes without saying, Shadow's is more angular to befit a slightly rougher hero, and Amy's is a cute bob cut of sorts. But Silver? Even without the ganja, you've still got the two tentacles making up the back of his head.
I'd rather not be reminded of hentai quills, thanks.
“I thought Crusher-san would like it :’(”
I do find it hilarious that they went through numerous designs for Silver, and this was what they chose to go with. Some of his prototype designs may have fared better had any of them been used instead... but we didn't end up with any of those ones. We ended up with this one, therefore I'm judging this one.
But don’t worry, it’s not all bad with Silver...
The Personality: As far as actual character goes, Silver's personality is as straightfoward as most characters in the series, yet it's no less interesting, because it took a while for it to fully evolve to what it currently is. The seeds of his character - a good-natured yet awkward and rather insecure kind of guy, who doesn't fully understand how the present time works - have always been there, but it was often downplayed in earlier titles due to him being hungry for Iblis Trigger blood... or being an arsehole for no reason.
Although to be fair, everyone in Rivals is an arsehole for no reason.
Eventually though, after the writers gave him a Snickers, these traits got more opportunity to shine. Mostly in side media admittedly, but it's been noted in the games as well. With no Iblis to angst over, he's proven to be a surprisingly bubbly chap, who just wants to know how you're all doing, fellow anthro kids. And whereas his naivety was previously used for intended tragedy to benefit the evil plan of a guy who thought taking the -istoph- out of Mephistopheles would make him inconspicuous, now it's been used for a bunch of low-key contexts that do a much better job at endearing him to the player.
Finally, something I can relate to.
Hell, he even seems to have learned from the Mephiles incident, as he was quick to make it clear to the next shadowy deep-voiced anthro with demonic eyes he met that he wasn't gonna fall for any of them fibs no more, ya hear?
“YouTube and Twitter don’t count.”
All in all, it works well enough, in my opinion. His personality does pave the way for some funny and wholesome moments, and since they’re no longer trying to build him up like he’s Shadow 2.0, he's nowhere near as much of a tool as he was before. So I guess you could say... I like it?
Does this mean I can say that I like the character as a whole then, design and '06-induced idiocy aside?
Well, not quite...
The Execution: This is where the complication part comes into play. We know now that I like his personality, not so much his design, but that's only the half of it. It would be more accurate to say that I like his personality... and dislike everything else.
Aside from that, obviously.
For starters, the creation process for his character and story was summed up with, in their own words, “Think Trunks from Dragon Ball Z”. So he comes off as rather lazy and uninspired. Now I'm not expecting my Sonic characters to be 100% unique, there's always going to be similarities to other franchises no matter what you do, even if subconsciously or by complete coincidence. Taking inspiration in itself is no big deal at all.
But... was that it? Copying a DBZ character to such a blatant extent? Was there no other thought put into it?
Naturally, this ties into an overarching problem: the franchise's mid-00's habit of trying way too hard to be the anthro Dragon Ball Z. Sonic has had DBZ influences since the early days, with the Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic, but it didn't assimilate itself into every waking aspect of his universe. It was merely an additional flavor that added to the complete package, in the same way that a Death Star with a moustache didn't mean the franchise was suddenly Star Wars the Hedgehog.
But come the turn of the millenium, nearly every main title in the series ended with Super Sonic and/or Super Shadow saving the day, while everyone else either stood around being useless, or only helping in ways that no one actually cares about. Including the in-universe President apparently, since only Sonic and Shadow were featured in the photo on his desk.
Amy smiled. “I guess the rest of us can go fuck ourselves, huh?”
This reached its peak with - of course - Sonic '06, with Silver in particular being an obvious result of this then-ongoing trend. And yes, it would be unfair to use him as a scapegoat, considering it was already a problem long before he turned up. But moreso than even Shadow, it's an era that Silver is forever a relic of, for better or for worse.
But it doesn't stop there. Since Silver is considered a mainstay character, his gimmick of being from the future also creates problems of its own, because in order for him to make further appearances, he keeps turning up for little explained reason, and thus he suffers the Deadly Six problem of being shoved into places where he doesn't belong, for fanservice's own sake. Take Sonic Colours DS for example, where he went back in time JUST to check out Eggman's theme park... Okay...?
On one hand, I’d visit it too, since it's made by Eggman. On the other hand, I’d stay clear of it, since it's made by Eggman.
And when there IS a justification with more weight to it? It's just recycling the '06 routine of trying to avert his ruined future, which isn't much better. The cause may differ depending on the story, but if his future is a permanent shitehole for one reason or another, he might as well cut out the middle man and stay in the present altogether, since that's where his friends are anyway. But they seem intent on not doing that, despite the future schtick being a noose around his neck at this point.
In hindsight, maybe this was a hint to how the rest of the arc would turn out.
And then there's his dynamic with a certain purple cat... No, not Big. The other one.
“I’m here, by the way.”
Simply put: I don't like this dynamic. At all. Or rather, I don't like how they keep milking it. Blaze's backstory was radically changed to justify her presence in Silver's future, and it really shows, since she barely even shows up half the time, as if the developers themselves forgot she was in the game. But her backstory has since been restored to her original alternate dimension interpretation, so hanging around with the grey hedgehog is all good now, right?
To be brutally honest, I probably wouldn't care for this dynamic regardless. But I would be more willing to tolerate it, and I'd refrain from groaning every time they're seen together... if they weren't intent on playing it up so much in spite of '06 being wiped out, sometimes with a bit of commentary involving their thoughts and memories, which only succeeds at making things more confusing. If Blaze is around, Silver will be nearby, and if he's not at first, he will be soon enough. This franchise does have a problem in general with restricting who's allowed to interact with who (I personally believe Sonic Heroes may have led to this, or at least it accelerated it), but I'd argue it's at its most insufferable here, with Blaze's potential and her entire world taking a backseat to being the sidekick of Ganja Man.
And you might say “Well, it's part of the franchise now, so you'll just have to accept it”. To which I ask: Have you accepted Two Worlds? Have you accepted Solo Sonica? Have you accepted Sonic's friends not doing much as of late?
Yeah. That's what I thought. “It’s just how it is” doesn’t mean you can’t criticise it.
Meanwhile, Marine is lucky enough to get so much as a shout out.
So yeah, I have quite an extensive list of grievances involving poor Silver. But... very little of it has to do with him, right? They're all indirect problems that he just so happens to be linked to, as opposed to someone like Chris Thorndyke, who is genuinely a shit character through and through. This is more comparable to Tails being bitchy in Lost World, or Amy being manipulative in Chronicles, or Sonic being a smug dumbass in IDW, or Shadow not wearing a Hawaiian shirt in Boom. Frustrating, regrettable, but not really the character's own fault.
Yet even after all that, there's one last kick in the teeth... How do you fix all this? And how do you fix it when he's since gained a sizable fandom, many of whom like him for these very attributes? If you leave it as it is, you're stuck with this big, awkward mess that everyone pretends to ignore. If you try to do something about it, you'll get complaints about disrespecting the True Silver Spirit, and you’ll get questions about why you didn't create a new character instead... And if you did use a new character for the sake of a clean slate, THEN you'd get complaints about not using Silver.
It's a tough call to be sure, and it's such a shame because like I said, I do appreciate his personality, so I can't say he's bad outright. But with all this... clutter, I can only put him in the average category. So, in he goes.
Crusher Gives Silver a: Thumbs Sideways!
Well, I'm glad this one's out of the way. Putting my thoughts into words with Silver was harder than it should have been. I do slightly regret starting this series off on a rather downer note, but rest assured, it's a lot more positive from this point onwards, since while I have higher praise for some heroes more than others, the hero characters as a whole fare a lot better than the majority of villains not named Eggman.
I guess you could say that I hope to show why Sonic's friends aren't as shitty as the haters would suggest. ;)

“Take my hand.”
Usually, she would lead. It was where she felt safe, comfortable, in control. Untouchable, perhaps, if she were being completely frank with herself, and being completely frank with herself a habit she was still in the process of learning.
“Like this?”
A strong hand takes hold of her fingers with a gentle ease. It is softer than she expected. It causes a slight tremble to run down her spine. She pulls it into position.
“Yes. Exactly like that.”
Across the room a small contraption sat on a bare floor. A box, whose insides were a fraught tangle of wires, hums a tune through a tinny speaker that she knew so well she could wrap herself in it like a blanket. Low voices, whispered dissonance, a rhythm that comes and goes like the tide, that left her imagining she was the last woman to watch the sea leave.
“I’ve never done this before, you know.”
“You have not danced?”
“Well, not properly properly danced. Never really learned any steps, or any of that.” A quick grin comes to her partners face. “The sort of dancing I know usually involves a bottle of whiskey, first, before blundering around on the dancefloor.”
“We could do that afterwards, if you’d like.”
Her partner blinks. Perhaps in surprise.
“Oh, I was-- I’m joking, Kagrenac.”
“And? I’m still interested.”
“Well, I want you to show me your world first,” says her partner. “It’s endlessly fascinating.”
“Easy to say, when you’ve spent the last two thousand years in a box.”
“A box.” Her partner snorts. “You people, you can fit an entire orchestra into a box. You could fit the most moving poetic epic that has graced our ears into a box. How is that not incredible? How is that not completely astounding?”
She thinks about this, as her arms gently guide another into the correct shape, the right form. She wonders to herself about what boxes can and cannot do. Could a box contain all of her? Could a box hold her in place?
“I suppose it is,” she says, eventually.
There is a moment of silence, a gap between tracks, as the spindle of a wheel struggles to reset itself into the correct place. They let the silence have its space as she shows her the next steps. The footwork is tricky.
It makes her feel useful, to do this. Safe, comfortable, and in control. Less like a woman, shattered, who had stitched herself back in shape with clever theories and skilful craftsmanship, but was still bent in the wrong way. To know that she can show her partner, a woman crafted of myth and legend and martyrdom, a woman who spoke as if she could spit fire, the vanguard of her time, something as mundane as a dance.
When the needle clicks into place, and the song loops again, her partner asks her a question:
“Why are you interested?”
“In you?”
“Oh, no, I mean, well, my life.”
“Your life is interesting.”
“You already know how it goes. You practically recounted half of my life as if you had to recite it. You know how it all… ugh, well, you know all of that mess.”
Her partner stops, at that moment.
Her hand was still in hers, her fingers still twirled up in hers, her pulse still resting on her skin, a skittering thing. She wonders who is really safe, here, in this box, which is cold and bare and without much of anything. She thinks of what comfort smells like, and how it is not here, in this empty box, to which she has brought music to for the first time in two thousand years.
“I don’t know your life through your eyes. I would like to, though.”
“Why?”
“Believe it or not, you are really interesting.”
Her partner laughs at that, although she does not quite catch the joke. A smile, broad enough to grasp in two hands, if she were feeling bold, grows on her partner’s face, as they lean closer. Enough for her voice to lower.
“Kagrena, you’re something else, you know?”
“Am I?”
“Yes,” she says. “Yes you are.”
You still don’t quite understand the joke, and yet you find a smile of your own beginning to dance on your face.

Later, half a bottle of whiskey later, as Kagrenac finds herself struggling to hold anything even resembling poise or balance or elegance in place, she asks her - Can I call you that? Can I call you Rena?
It feels comfortable. Not untouchable, though, not the cold comfort of a watchtower where the faces of others are distant speckles. It is something far closer to warm, strong hands encircling your own.
Yes, Kagrenac says.

“It had to be the one of the first missions we were on. Solaris was with us, and we found our guy. We had him cornered, and Solaris instructed us to throw a petrify orb at ‘em. Urie wound up and accidentally hit our Charizard friend instead!” Miles then burst out laughing.
Urie his his face behind his hands. “Look, it was a mistake. Can we just drop it? I don’t really appreciate the teasing...”
“Oh, I’m only messing with ya. We all make mistakes, Urie. You just gotta learn to laugh at them instead of getting hurt.”
Urie thought about it, and couldn’t help but chuckle. “Well, Solaris’ face was pretty funny to look at.”

Ah, shit, it’s 06′s anniversary again and I almost forgot.
Originally wanted to write something about some popular ship you may know, but whatever.
So, what can I say? Only recently I’ve started to have much more fun playing Sonic ‘06, and that’s because Project 06 on PC is really pulling the game from whatever pit SEGA left it to rot and polishing it up to make it shine, at least gameplay wise.
About the original game, I came across its existence around 2010, when that old “Sonic 06 is a bad game and here’s why” video was published. Back then it felt like 06′s pure glory was completely unleashed (heh) on YouTube, and you can guess how, over the coming years, my opinion on the game would be influenced by wacky glitch videos and the two mammoth-sized (by early 2010′s standards) reviews by Clement and Johnny.
I’m not the first one to say that Sonic ‘06 in general is a very mixed bag for me, there’s lot of good and bad to take from this game, and I constantly find myself looking at it, searching for something to elaborate and maybe even praise. The plot is a very good example of this: I love Silver’s absolution (heh) arc and the fact we are still seeing the aftermath of his separation from Blaze to this day; I also like a lot Shadow’s dark story, with its twists and turns (also twisted Mephiles, totally a pun); but then Sonic’s story shows up and I completely despise everything about it, it’s just dumb, the way is directed is dumb, the way Elise is written is dumb, the entire thing is just dumb incident after dumb incident until the Final Story where Mephiles snaps and puts a fucking end to that madness, Jesus. Also, what the hell was going on when they made the three trials? What a waste of time, and the Trial of Love (the one thing that could make or break the lore up to that point) was awfully unfinished. I don’t even approve the way they solved that mess of a plot by erasing it all. Even with all the shit I just gave it, the general plot deserves a place in “canon”, it makes everything more spicy to piece together for Sonic lore nerds.
Rant aside, another thing I always agreed with was the argument of the soundtrack being absolutely top tier. In fact, ‘06 has some of my all-time favorite tracks, like Flame Core - The Cavern, Soleanna New City, Aquatic Base - Level 1, White Acropolis - Snowy Peak and, of course, Solaris Phase 2. Vocal tracks like Dreams of an Absolution and His World are also somewhere along the top portions of my personal lists, and my 14-year-old self always loved to loudly sing Crush 40′s rendition of All Hail Shadow. I could even make a case for My Destiny, but I’m still warming up to that track.
So, in conclusion, another ‘06 anniversary, another chance for me to write about it. Is it a total trainwreck? Well, from a development standpoint of course it is, but I like to think the game has a lot more to offer besides “WORST GAME EVER!!11!! OMEGALUL”. It’s a fascinating game to study, as there are some very high highs, very low lows, and we could sit here talking about all those things in detail. But like Josh from TGC said last year (and I recommend watching that entire video, the lead up to that ending is just as brutal as the ending itself): the damage was done, on November 14th, 2006 this game killed not only Sonic’s shaky reputation after Heroes and Shadow, but also the Adventure formula and even went as far as to poison Sonic’s past. That’s a black mark the franchise could never wipe off its name, and I’d argue the possibility of another blunder of that caliber it’s something every fan fears everytime a new game is announced.
This game’s anniversary is just so bittersweet on all fronts.

-Mephiles’ mistakes are inexcusably huge and numerous for someone who is supposed to be the ultimate chessmaster, and it’s only because of luck-via-bad-writing that he didn’t suffer any consequences for these mistakes (until the very end, when punting the Chaos Emeralds away as Solaris is what allows Sonic’s friends to start the plan that eventually results in his own demise). If he tried his plan in the exact same way in a game that didn’t dumb down the rest of the cast, his plan would have been foiled before it even got off the ground.
-All in all, Robotnik succeeds at being a compelling character due to having genuine intelligence, having a lot of dimension to him, and being very fun to watch.

There are still a number of myths and shallow skepticism when it comes to social media. This is for several reasons:
Compared to some forms of marketing, social media is a relatively new way of doing marketing, sales, PR and customer service.
In the early days, self-proclaimed social media mavens took advantage of the buzz and brought disastrous campaigns to undiscerning clients.
It can be overwhelming. There is a lot going on on social media, you need to learn a new language, deal directly with criticism and negativity, keep track of messages and updates on several platforms.
While all of the above are valid reasons to think of your social media project as a complex process, it does not justify most of the criticism and skepticism out there. We will address the most recurring criticism, myths, and arguments so that you are ready to respond to the concerns of your boss, even if the boss is yourself.
Social Media is a Fad
This was a common opinion back in 2008/2009 when Facebook and Twitter were booming. Most bosses were very quick to dismiss social media as the fashion of the moment. Something that in a couple of years was going to be dissolved.
It is tough to have such an opinion today. If you look around, you will notice your peers, friends, colleagues, parents, children, relatives, equally involved in using some form of social media. Whether it is Facebook, a blog, Instagram, a LinkedIn profile or Snapchat, it seems that everybody is involved on some level with social media.
This does not translate into an immediate reason why you should engage with social media, but the numbers are unprecedented. What we are witnessing is not comparable to anything we’ve seen before. It is a way of life.
Attendees Will Say Negative Things About Us
This is at the same time the easiest and most difficult concern to tackle. It does not take a clinical psychologist to understand that if you are worried about negativity coming your way, you are either not confident in your event or are trying to hide wrongdoings.
This is not a myth. It is a reality. If your event sucks attendees will say it out loud on social media. At the same time, if your event is great attendees will equally say it on social (maybe in smaller numbers, as we don’t like to compliment as much as complain). But, here is a twist, attendees may be already saying something negative about your event, without you realizing or doing anything about it.
The last bit scares the hell out of most people. If you have any negativity heading your way, it is very desirable to be aware and address it on social networks.
Acknowledgment and action upon criticism via social networks are quickly becoming key performance indicators of customer-oriented businesses and events. The attitude towards negativity should be to investigate further and fix criticism, rather than deny it.
Our Customers are Not on Social Media
While the stats about social networks make it almost impossible for your prospective customers not to be on social, there is a case to determine whether it is right for your audience. While most are on social, they are not necessarily willing to engage on social to buy an event ticket or research their attendance at a particular conference.
The correct approach to this criticism is to respond with numbers. Analysis of competitors, attendee research and an event registration form that asks for social network handles will give you the data you need. If the numbers are strong enough there will be no case against your proposed program.
On the other hand, if you don’t have the numbers and the opportunity is weak, you are chasing something that may be irrelevant to your audience. Or at least not important enough (yet) to dedicate resources to it.
Social Media is for Large Brands, Not for Events
While large brands are obviously very engaged with social media, there is a growing literature of case studies supporting the use of social media by businesses small and large, in B2B environments and for events, regardless of their size. It is usual to have several event-specific social media channels and this is naturally what your attendees will be searching for.
Social Media is Cheap
One of the reasons why bosses actually decide to use social media is the assumption it is cheap. As much as this could seem like a positive feature, it will actually turn out to be a recipe for disaster.
Yes, setting up a Youtube account and posting videos costs nothing in comparison to the cost of advertising on TV or print expenditure 25 years ago. However, the fact is that if you are deciding to use social media, you should be making a commitment that is far greater than just setting up an account and randomly updating it.
The standard is high. In a content marketing world, you are faced with your competition by delivering cool campaigns, made of innovative ideas and powerful content. A lackluster approach will be punished by your audience.
Choosing to engage in a social media project means investing time and resources in it. It also means allocating budget to social media advertising in some instances. If your boss is not prepared to invest in it, you should not champion the project. You will end up with a lot of work to do, expected to deliver great results that won’t be fully understood by your management.
A correct social media program has a budget dedicated to it, tools to monitor and implement it and a team of champions within the organization to support it.

Every event should have a social media policy. This should outline how to use social media to promote an event. Your team should be crystal clear about what is expected of them and the boundaries of their engagement.
A good social media program could easily turn into a depressing disaster if your staff are not clearly briefed about the rules of using social media in your company. There are also concerns with regards to respecting your employees’ rights when it comes to social media.
Some of the questions you should ask yourself are:
Who is involved? Who do I want to be using social media? All or part of my team? Who are those who can use it? Under what circumstances should they be using it?
Disclosure. Should your employees add to their profile that they work for your event? Should they make a note that their words do not represent the employer’s views? Is there a difference between personal and business use? Should your employees have separate accounts?
Key Contacts. Who should your employees contact if they want to engage with social media? Should they seek approval if they want to disclose they work for the event?
Rules. Should your employees respect certain rules if they say they work for you but use social media on a personal level?
Fair Competition. Are there ethical concerns your employees should take into consideration? Can they mention competitors? Suppliers? Can they disclose information about sponsors or general stakeholders? Is there a code of conduct they should adhere to?
Profile Setup. Do employees business profiles have to meet certain criteria? Do you offer assistance in setting them up? Do you have a standard logo they should use? Should they use corporate photos on their profiles?
Assistance. What general tips can you give about engaging correctly on social media? Expertise, attention to detail, knowing the language to use, do not take advantage of the community are just some examples.
As you may have noticed, there is a lot to go through. Depending on how you answer the above question, you could end up with a loose or strict policy.
As the Romans said, “in medio stat virtus” (virtue stands in the middle); meaning that a balance of the two practices is usually a good fit. You should not leave anything uncovered. You should protect your event reputation and brand but also preserve the right of your employees to express their views and in general not kill creativity and inspiration with too many rules.
It is in fact very common to see accounts of very strict companies that are just dull and uninteresting. There is an intrinsic component of social media that screams for personality, interesting content, creative updates, fun, education, and inspiration. Limiting your employees with too many rules may impact the delivery of any of the above.
On the other hand, being too laid back or too open may put you in a delicate position, exposing yourself to criticism and anger, two popular sentiments of social media.
Involving your employees as much as possible in crafting a policy is a great way to avoid friction and to make sure there is some level of agreement on what is and is not expected from them.

When we think about social media for events, the first thing that comes to mind is event promotion. While social media is highly valuable for marketing, it’s scope and potential is much greater than that.
Social media can be used to add value to all the main business functions of your event. It can be used to stimulate engagement at the event, improve networking, manage customer service issues, direct attendees to relevant content and gather attendees feedback in real time.

Action 1: Define Objective Areas Where Social Can Help
When putting your social media strategy together, it’s important that the objectives are in alignment with and help to achieve the overall event objectives. To work out how a social media strategy can help achieve these goals consider where social media can have an impact on your event.
Here are some of the definite objective areas your event can focus on:
Customer service. Events with a well managed social media team can quickly and easily deal with problems like cold meeting rooms, lost property and session questions. They can also proactively provide valuable information such as delayed flights, reminders about when the lunch break ends and the location of an alternative washroom.
Marketing. The viral nature of social media makes it a highly effective tool for connecting customers at all stages of the buying cycle. The focus is to better position the brand of your event into current and prospective attendees minds.
Online Reputation Management. Traditional PR becomes reputation and brand management in a social media context. Social networks and social media are powerful tools to circulate a message, to change perception and influence the wider stakeholder community. The highly agile and responsive nature of social media means it is also ideal for dealing with crisis situations or averting problems before they start.
Research. Social networks and social media are invaluable for researching the content of your event, potential speakers, performers, attendee profiles and so on. This information helps you to develop an appealing program and also provides a business intelligence to inform your sales and marketing. Once you are confident with each business area where social media can help, it is time to understand where in your event or event business social media can give its best contribution. This is a procedure we like to call process mapping.
Process mapping consists of laying out all of the core touchpoints, user journeys and contingencies any of the stakeholders involved with your event will be affected by. The procedure involves using a whiteboard, a large sheet of paper or mind mapping software to lay it out.
If you use a template to project manage your event, you could use Work Breakdown Structures or detailed rundown sheets, these are very valid starting points for your process mapping stage.

By thinking through all of the processes that make up your event you can easily identify areas where social media can help you reach economies of scale, avoid repetitive tasks or flood inboxes with unnecessary emails.
There is no need to be too granular about the process. It is also best to avoid uncertain areas. If the benefit of engaging with social media is not immediate, it means there is little value. Reconciling the process with a benefit should be an ‘aha’ moment, characterized by an effective and clear tangible outcome for the stakeholder involved.
It is also a good idea to prioritize the areas that need more help or present a better opportunity.
Action 3: Ask “What?”
What will you include in the content plan that will help to achieve your wider business objectives and specifically take advantage of untapped opportunities identified in your process mapping?
Be specific about the content you expect your team to create or find. This gathering stage will, in fact, involve identifying those sources of content that can help you to deliver value to your audience.

Why are you choosing to write about a specific topic? Why are you picking that news? Why are you resharing an update?
The why of your selection should be very clear to you and your team. It is very common to see completely out of touch or irrelevant updates being broadcast these days. To help you master content creation and selection correctly here is a handy checklist:
Does the content help us in achieving our objective?
Does the content deliver value to our audience?
Is the content relevant to the context and channel we are using?
Is the content helping our event or is it helping our competitors?
Is the content educating, converting, influencing, serving or positively entertaining our audience?
Is the content shareable? Will our audience recommend it to their peers?
It is very difficult to find universal values to give an indication as to why some content is more valuable, however, this is a good starting point to define why you are choosing to go live with the content you selected.
If you are not sure about one of these items, it is probably better to choose another approach or piece of content.
Action 5: Ask “To Whom?”
Who is the content addressed to? Do you clearly have in mind who your audience is?
The research phase of your social media program should identify key personas. It is a wise practice in marketing but also in PR and customer service to be confident with your audience personas. Choose two or three personas you should be talking to whenever you select, write, curate and publish content.
They should have name, age, occupation, income. This wayfinding and publishing content will be much easier. Will a teenager love a complex white paper? Probably not. Will a 56-year-old head of marketing be amused by a cat video on Youtube or Facebook? Yes (everybody likes cat videos), but will it be relevant for the right reasons?
Action 6: Ask “How?”
Defining audience personas will help you to set a clear tone and manner for your communications over social networks and influence content selected.
You should create specific guidelines in terms of how your team should communicate with your audience. Your brand values need to be reflected in all the communication over social media.

Once you have the loyalty, you are more likely to show up in their newsfeed and if you can get the reach, Facebook is probably one of the most wide-reaching platforms. Plus, it has better ad marketing targeting for different demographics simultaneously.
LinkedIn – For B2B marketing and making personal connections, LinkedIn can be perfect for finding sponsors, collaborations and letting influencers or industry professionals know about your event. Also excellent for finding professionals you want to hire for events or putting requests out.
Instagram – Another image focused platform that heavily relies on hashtags to be noticed. It can be an excellent place to group images of your event for a live wall (much like Twitter) and with Instagram’s new “follow hashtags” feature it makes searching and connecting with your audience easier. Also perfect for those behind-the-scenes images.
Twitter – For short bursts, updates, giveaways and flash ticket sales Twitter is an excellent platform that can also help build relationships with potential attendees. It allows effective and easier interaction compared to Instagram and Pinterest so it is better suited for quirky attendee contact, live streaming or Q&A sessions.
Pinterest – Image and inspiration heavy, if you are an event prof looking to market by showcasing your event’s flair and style this is the choice for you. Many users on Pinterest don’t even look at the description (although that’s how you rank your pins well with SEO) but striking, eye-catching images can entice others to click through.
Now you know what they are for, you can look at finding where your audience is based. This part can be a little trickier but there are a couple of things you can do now to help:

Check out your direct competition – Where they are, is where you should probably be. Particularly if you are aiming for the same demographic. Check out competitors social media and find which ones are most interacted with, and start with these first.
Evaluate current analytics from your platforms – Download, link or look at the analytics, where are you getting most interaction? Likes, follows and shares equate to reach and engagement, look at where you are at currently.
