Soleil gnawed on the clicky-side of her pen, a bad habit that reared its nasty head whenever she was deep in thought. Or, at the very least, attempting to be deep in thought. After all, it was difficult to concentrate on writing songs; the girls' cheer routines and the boys' play-calling on the field created a discordant amalgam of sounds.

But she was here for one reason and one reason only, and that was the girl tossing her pom-poms around on the field.

Soleil's eyes wandered and naturally landed on the girl in question: Madison. Looking cute despite the heat. When the two caught each other's gazes, Soleil didn't hesitate to give the girl a peppy wave. Maybe it was undercut with a little bit of sarcasm, since Soleil didn't have the greatest track record with cheerleaders (Miranda from high school was one of her biggest bullies), but she knew Madison would be a good sport about it.

Sitting on the bleachers, Soleil was about to turn her attention back on her sheet of lyrics when a blunt object struck her notebook, knocking it out of her hand. She groaned.

"Sorry 'bout that, sunshine!" called out one of the football players, using her namesake against her. It was clear she was his target. Even though they were all in college now, they still liked to pick on her.

With a roll of her eyes, she got up to chuck the football back to him. It unceremoniously landed near his feet. "Fuck off, Eugene!" she yelled back, doxxing the douchebag's real name. They knew each other back in high school. Now, in college, he was Gino. Yeah, right. It was like going from a piece of garbage to a piece of shit.

EMILE CORDON - MIRACLE LIP BALMS

If you’ve followed my blog for a while now you may remember that I featured the exquisite brand, Emile Cordon, and 2 of their sumptuous lip balms last year! If like me you tend to opt for a balm over a lipstick then you’re going to fall in love with these splendid little pots, more so as 4 of the Miracle Lip Balms come as a 2-in-1! Read on... 

The beauty of the original Cashmere-On Lip Pots went far beyond their appearance, it was the texture, the formula AND their unique scent. The Miracle Lip Balms are equally sublime, and the notable difference between the collections is the new Black & Gold packaging. Still so elegant and attractive in appearance, one that makes you want to carry the box around as it looks too expensive to throw away. 

So, within this Miracle Lip Balm range, Emile Cordon has produced a new line known as the ‘Haute Couture’ collection. There are four shades in this line, all of which have an alluring scent of Rose Champagne & Strawberry Leaves, very delectable!

As I mentioned above, what makes these 4 balms unique is that not only can you add a wash of colour to your lips, you can also pop them on to your cheeks for a matching flush! The 2-in-1 lip and cheek tints contain Kukui Nut Oil, Almond Oil, Vitamin E, Squalane to nourish, soften and protect your pout. The colour payoff varies dependent upon the shade you choose and all four are buildable so you can decide on the intensity. When I want minimal products on my face I want it to look fresh, dewy and glowy, so I always choose creamy based products and this formula is extremely comfortable to wear, it adds a lovely youthful glow to the cheeks which makes it ideal for that ‘no-makeup makeup’ look! These 2-in-1 pots are a great addition to my makeup bag.  

Charlotte - This appears to be a vivid true Red shade within the pot but is much more subtle upon swatching - which pleases me. It is definitely buildable though and wouldn’t overwhelm the cheeks like you might expect.

Madison Queen - Much more of an Umber Orange shade, this one is the deepest colour and gave the most colour payoff. 

Chic Chic Boom - Inside the pot, this ones appears to be an intense Coral shade but actually more-so resembles the natural lip colour when applied, which I could see many people really enjoying! This would be my favourite pairing for both the lips and cheeks. 

Powdered Rose - A gorgeous rose pink shade that adds a healthy flush to your lips. I’m not usually a fan of Pink with my complexion, I’m more for the peachy tones but I’ve found this is the one I use the most!

St Barts Soleil - Fresh Coconut, Pineapple, Vanilla Accord (this smells like a mix of the tropical Caribbean and a scrumptious cake! It’s my ultimate favourite balm and has no colour, just a high glossy shine)

Rosé Imperial - Sparkling Rose Champagne, Fresh Tea Rose, Charming Vanilla (very reminiscent of the chilled pink bubbly so many love!)

For tens of thousands of years, Aboriginal Australians have created some of the world’s most striking artworks. Today their work continues long lines of ancestral traditions, stories of the past and connections to current cultural landscapes, which is why researchers are keen on better understanding and preserving the cultural heritage within.

In particular, knowing the chemical composition of pigments and binders that Aboriginal Australian artists employ could allow archaeological scientists and art conservators to identify these materials in important cultural heritage objects. Now, researchers are turning to X-ray science to help reveal the composition of the materials used in Aboriginal Australian cultural heritage — starting with the analysis of century-old samples of plant secretions, or exudates.

Aboriginal Australians continue to use plant exudates, such as resins and gums, to create rock and bark paintings and for practical applications, such as hafting stone points to handles. But just what these plant materials are made of is not well known.

Therefore, scientists from six universities and laboratories around the world turned to high-energy X-rays at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and the synchrotron SOLEIL in France. The team aimed X-rays at 10 well-preserved plant exudate samples from the native Australian genera Eucalyptus, Callitris, Xanthorrhoea and Acacia. The samples had been collected more than a century ago and held in various institutions in South Australia.

The results of their study were clearer and more profound than expected.

“We got the breakthrough data we had hoped for,” said Uwe Bergmann, physicist at University of Wisconsin-Madison and former SLAC scientist who develops new X-ray methods. “For the first time, we were able to see the molecular structure of a well-preserved collection of native Australian plant samples, which might allow us to discover their existence in other important cultural heritage objects.”

Researchers today published their results in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Looking below the surface

Over time, the surface of plant exudates can change as the materials age. Even if these changes are just nanometers thick, they can still block the view underneath.

“We had to see into the bulk of the material beneath this top layer or we’d have no new information about the plant exudates,” SSRL Lead Scientist Dimosthenis Sokaras said.

Conventionally, molecules with carbon and oxygen are studied with lower-energy, so-called “soft” X-rays, that would not be able to penetrate through the debris layer. For this study, researchers sent high-energy X-ray photons, called “hard” X-rays, into the sample. The photons squeezed past foggy top layers and into the sample’s elemental arrangements beneath. Hard X-rays don’t get stuck in the surface, whereas soft X-rays do, Sokaras said.

Once inside, the high-energy photons scattered off of the plant exudate’s elements and were captured by a large array of perfectly aligned, silicon crystals at SSRL. The crystals filtered out only the scattered X-rays of one specific wavelength and funneled them into a small detector, kind of like how a kitchen sink funnels water drops down its drain.

Next, the team matched the wavelength difference between the incident and scattered photons to the energy levels of a plant exudate’s carbon and oxygen, providing the detailed molecular information about the unique Australian samples.

A path for the future

Understanding the chemistries of each plant exudate will allow for a better understanding of identification and conservation approaches of Aboriginal Australian art and tools, Rafaella Georgiou, a physicist at Synchrotron SOLEIL, said.

“Now we can go ahead and study other organic materials of cultural importance using this powerful X-ray technique,” she said.

Researchers hope that people who work in cultural heritage analysis will see this powerful synchrotron radiation technique as a valuable method for determining the chemistries of their samples.

“We want to reach out to that scientific community and say, ‘Look, if you want to learn something about your cultural heritage samples, you can come to synchrotrons like SSRL,'” Bergmann said.

Fundo soberano de Abu Dhabi vai disputar licitação do Ibirapuera de olho em entretenimento

Um dos maiores fundos soberanos do mundo, o Mubadala, de Abu Dabi, está se preparando para fazer pesados investimentos no Brasil para ampliar sua participação nos setores de esporte e entretenimento. O fundo avalia participar, por meio de sua empresa IMM, da licitação do complexo do Ibirapuera, um investimento que não deverá sair por menos de US$ 100 milhões.

O complexo do Ibirapuera, que inclui ginásio e arena, é estratégico para a IMM porque o espaço pode atrair eventos esportivos e culturais que o País não comporta, como jogos de basquete da NBA, por exemplo. Quem vencer essa licitação será o responsável pela construção e exploração de um espaço multiuso, com capacidade para até 20 mil pessoas no local, que foi idealizado originalmente para ser a Madison Square brasileira.

Maior mercado de entretenimento da América do Sul, a cidade de São Paulo tornou-se o principal alvo de investimento da IMM (ex-IMX, que pertencia ao empresário Eike Batista e vendeu o controle para o fundo árabe em 2015). O Mubadala foi um dos credores que herdaram uma parte do Império X, que foi se esfacelando com a derrocada do empresário. Ficou, por exemplo, com o Porto Açu, Hotel Gloria, que está à venda, e negócios de mineração.

Com a IMM, o Mubadala quer se tornar uma referência em shows e eventos esportivos. Proprietária de marcas, como São Paulo Fashion Week (moda), Taste of São Paulo (gastronomia) e Rio Open (tênis), a IMM também tem parcerias estratégicas para crescer em organização de eventos, caso do Cirque du Soleil e de musicais que organiza em São Paulo e no Rio.

“Queremos transformar São Paulo em uma das maiores plataformas de entretenimento da América do Sul”, diz Alan Adler, principal executivo da IMM. Sob a gestão de Adler, a IMM está criando uma agência de marketing e comunicação, que ainda está em gestação, a IMM Creative Marketing, que será dirigida pelo publicitário Silvio Matos.

Com receita de R$ 250 milhões em 2019, a IMM também tem participado de conversas para assumir a organização da Fórmula 1 em São Paulo.

Adler descarta, por ora, fazer aquisições de negócios concorrentes. Não interessa à IMM, por exemplo, ser dona de casas de espetáculos. A companhia é dona da Tudus, empresa que vende ingressos online.

Para Carlos Herrera, analista da consultoria Condor Insider, a IMM está crescendo em um setor que voltou a se expandir no Brasil. “Até 2011, o País era a potência mundial e atraia vários shows. Mas depois da crise, o poder aquisitivo começou a cair e o público para grandes espetáculos diminuir”, disse. Para Herrera, a IMM precisa, contudo, criar uma identidade para o seu negócio. “A IMM não tem um posicionamento claro no mercado.”

Homem de confiança. Braço direito de executivos do Mubadala no País, Adler participa, uma vez por mês, de reuniões para definir a estratégia de expansão da IMM com gestores do fundo de Abu Dabi. “Tenho muito liberdade para sugerir negócios. Não há um cheque com um valor pronto para fazer investimentos. Temos mandatos para comprar ativos que façam sentido aos negócios do fundo. E dinheiro não é problema para os investidores de Abu Dabi”, diz Adler.

É no Rio de Janeiro que o Mubadala mantém a sede do fundo para a América do Sul – a cidade, contudo, já não é mais vitrine de grandes eventos para o IMM. “O Rio, sem dúvidas, concentra um cartão postal muito bonito, mas a economia do Estado está ruim. São Paulo será o nosso foco e tem tudo para ser uma Broadway brasileira”, diz.

Com ativos herdados do espólio de Eike Batista, o Mubadala também está expandindo seus negócios fora da área de entretenimento no País.
