Tacoma
There was a strange aura of loneliness that began to take form when I walked to downtown Tacoma.
Hinge called it “New Tacoma,” which was clear based alone on the difference between where I ended up that night and where I initially began.
On one corner was a luxury apartment, with two, twenty-something’s dangling their feet over a balcony that could easily second as a plant nursery.
Across, was a slew of dilapidated businesses. Law firms, furniture stores, and even more, indiscernible due to the sheer amount of spray paint and wood used to cover any identifiable feature of once was.
It reminded me of the times I visited downtown Cincinnati and Detroit during the subsequent years after the recession.
There was a deep sadness that felt engrained in Tacoma’s longstanding architecture.
For 5:00 PM on a Friday night, the streets were dead. Few cars passed through the far too wide intersections that took more hustle to cross illegally compared to my Portland routine.
The sidewalks in downtown were threatening. Varying degrees of towering steepness, which may be the closest thing I’ve gotten to what my California friends call “San Francisco.”
The first stop, a hole in the wall deli converted into a bar that served up a solid tap list and an equally solid soft pretzel, felt lived in.
Scratched floors, differing sized coffee tables, and the faded, frayed carpets made for little continuity that reminded me of a conglomeration of every living room I visited as a child.
Then was the McMenamins. A momentary respite from the rest of the evening, but a haunting reminder of the homogeneous nature of chain corporations and the goal of meticulously creating the perfect experience for every smiling customer.
An arcade would be a good palate cleanser, but one that was too confined for its own good. Clearly making most of its money not off the 25 cent machines’ themselves, but the $6.50 cans of Coors Banquet that are displayed on an elaborate wall alongside four dozen other overpriced cans.
How else to end the evening other than a gay bar, with hopes of walking home carrying a smile on my face and an ego boost in order to counter the discomfort this city brings me.
Unsurprising to no one, the lack of effort I put in to socialize was reciprocated by whatever higher power overlooked the streets of Tacoma that evening.
I ended up making my way back to the Airbnb with nothing more than the aftertaste of a far too sweet cocktail and a cinnamon Zyn to try and wash it out.
Tomorrow, I was to go to a convention and force myself to ask sweaty strangers if I could play a trading card game with them.
That will most likely end the same way as tonight did, and I’ll probably just sleep in and scratch the convention all together.

Floor Levelling Sydney - Preparing Your Subfloor For Flooring Installation
Almost any type of flooring you can imagine needs a smooth, flat subfloor to ensure the best outcome once it is installed. While soft materials like vinyl and carpet are quite forgiving of slight variations in a surface, rigid materials such as tiles, timber floors and concrete floor coverings require careful attention to pre-installation prep work.
One key step is a process called floor levelling Sydney. It is a process of grinding the underlying concrete slab and filling in the peaks and valleys to create a smooth, even surface ready for your chosen floor covering. This can be particularly important if you have a new concrete slab and want to avoid issues such as heaves, cracks and dampness in the future.
When it comes to older buildings, floor levelling is often a necessity due to the original concrete slab having high or low points. This can be caused by concrete spills, contamination or errors during the original construction of the building.
Concrete floor levelling is a process of grinding down the humps and then using a self-levelling compound to fill in the voids, ensuring that your new slab is flat and ready for your new floor covering. Australian standards recommend a maximum tolerance of 10 mm in any room area and 20 mm across the whole building footprint. Many new concrete slabs have a height variation which exceeds these tolerances and therefore floor levelling is required.
The levelling process is usually followed by a feather coat which is a thin layer of the self-levelling compound troweled over the entire floor, to give a finer finish and ensure an even coverage. Some projects may also need additional preparation work, such as removing existing flooring, addressing moisture or repairing the substrate, to make sure that your floor covering performs to its full potential.
If your uneven floor is caused by warped or twisted joists, then you will need to shim the joists to correct the problem. Shims are wedge-shaped pieces of wood that are attached to the low areas of the joist with glue and then planed down. This is a more involved process that requires access to the subfloor from above.
In some cases, floor levelling is not possible, such as in old buildings with concrete floor joists that have deteriorated over time or if the floors have been covered by wooden flooring for many years. In this case the only option would be to remove the existing flooring and shim the joists as described above.
Another common method of levelling an existing concrete floor is to use a slurry screed. A slurry screed is a mixture of ordinary Portland cement and sand that is poured onto the existing concrete floor, which helps to level it out and provides a solid base for your new floor covering.
