If I may follow from what Gio said, I'd like to see more people share their conceptions of the pkmn world because it can avoid situations where muses inadvertently talk down to eachother because of differing worldbuilding. A small detail about Lyra's team that people sometimes comment on is that her azumarill is pure water-type. This is actually related to a headcanon I have about how the fairy-type originated that I've been putting off posting. And I need to get on with because it could open up some fun interactions! I like to share my worldbuilding in long-form prose type posts but just throwing up a few sentences gets the point across just as well without taking as much effort. A little ooc post explaining your muse follows a fading tradition from their region and is seen as unusual for that, that could open up a great interaction that doesn't make either mun feel like the intricacies of their characters is being ignored!

Oh, gosh, I feel like I talk about them too much as is but I can’t say I’m not glad to have the excuse. This is gonna be really long cause tbh I’m just gonna dump like, a bunch of their lore lmao.
Erato is my Masks: A New Generation character in a campaign being played alongside @twerkyvulture (As Amanda ‘Megafauna’ Ghorbani, The Transformed) @draayder (as Josephine ‘Rattlesnake’ Short, The Reformed) @spitblaze (as Les ‘Void’ Hawking, The Doomed) @heedra (as Enid ‘Frag Beetle’ Day, The Scion) and @skarchomp (as Parker ‘Cobalt’ Andrews, The Legacy) with @dykeceratops as our GM. To get back to Erato specifically though they’re an Anti Metahuman/Metahuman Suppression Weapon created by the in universe tech group Wright Industries, founded by Ingrid Day, Enid’s mom. They’re generally stronger, faster, and more durable than humans and can copy the superpowers of others for 5-10 minutes by touching them thanks to what is basically a meta-stem cell transplant interacting with other parts of their systems. (Also, I 100% swear to god that I did not consider ‘Robot Hero Who Copies The Powers Of Others’ is literally fucking Mega Man despite loving Mega Man a ton until after I had hashed out the concept with my GM’s assistance. Only once Abby said ‘oh like mega man’ I was like ‘wait, shit’.) I’ll tell you some about them as a person before unloading their history onto you, lol. Being an android built for combat and kept in an underground research lab, kept on a rigid schedule, constantly taking tests, physical, mental, written, oral, ethical, etc. etc. etc. and under constant supervision Erato lacked for real interactive experience before the campaign started only really ever getting to takl with authority figures and their sisters. They were very passive and observational, owing in part to their power set requiring a lot of adaptation to make the most of. They’re naive and very bad at exercising discretion in decision making, sometimes they overstep boundaries when talking with people without meaning to, and they’re really emotional! They have trouble dealing with strong emotions cause they haven’t managed to discover coping mechanisms that work well for them, they tend to get angry kind of easily and need time to blow off steam. But they’re also very genuine, honest, and well meaning. They are almost never mean, rude, or snippy, they do their best to do well by others, and have a strong sense of justice paired with a deep distrust and dislike of the current legal system in universe. This is in part due to the conditions of their creation (and in part because the intent behind it was kind of right!) and in part due to Enid’s life being threatened by a representative of the state while they and their teammates were in jail after being arrested following a huge brawl with an anti-methuman terrorist group. They’re also very willing to put forth the effort to improve as a person and to mend relationship wounds, almost always apologizing first to Enid when they fight and genuinely trying to work in advice and feedback they get from others, which they often get from Les and Parker. They’re also relatively educated, from the tests of their creators, from home and public schooling, from personal research, but that doesn’t undo their naivety. They also just straight up lack some very basic and/or common sense knowledge. Like, they don’t know what a bear is. Why would you teach a battle android working in a densely populated, extremely built up city about wild animals? All in all they’re kind of inexperienced and immature and make mistakes a lot but they’re (usually) very willing to admit their mistakes and to try and improve and get better. They genuinely and truly want what’s best for others and are learning to value them self as much as their teammates. They’ve also taken it upon them self to start doing humanitarian work in their free time over the summer. In a fight Erato is adaptive and quick witted but tends to put themself in more danger than is necessary. They also sometimes use more extreme force than the others believe is called for, but after the first time they did they and Parker had a real heart to heart about it, Les helped Erato learn and practice some coping, centering, behaviors they could do even under pressure and Erato did their best to adapt. That said they Fucking Hate The Keeper So God Damned Much Because Of How Much Suffering He’s Caused Their Friends And How Much Danger He Presents And Would Kill Him With No Remorse. So they don’t intend to apologize for ripping his arms off whatsoever. They and their sisters, collectively known as The Muse Units, were made to work as a group and as a proof of concept that atomized units could replace traditional police for use against metahuman criminals and to slowly phase out The Registry, the legal department which handles general metahuman based laws. If successful the units could be mass produced and improved upon, rapidly replacing current, error prone, law enforcement. At the time of their development, between late 1999 for blueprint drafting and until mid 2002 when the project was shut down, they were the cutting edge for AI development aided in no small part by Ingrid’s technokinetic powers allowing her to make advancements few others could. (As a note Erato’s body was finished being built in early 2001 but their unique personhood didn’t really come to fruition until February 18th, 2002, so that’s what I consider their ‘birthday’.) Ultimately, however, while a few of the Muses excelled some did not perform to expectations, the project fell behind schedule, investors lost interest, and a minor scandal involving a casualty happened, resulting in the project being shut down. The Muses were placed in indefinite storage, the data gained from their short existence used on other projects such and some of the tech advancements used to inform future decisions by the company. And it would have stayed that way, if not for the fact that in 2018 Ingrid Day was revealed to be The Locust in a conflict where Enid tried to defend her against a militia group who had been hired to take her down, being shot and presumably killed in the process. As The Locust she had been terrorizing Boston for over a decade trying to take it over and being involved in the deaths of over 70 people. (Which irl btw would make her like, the 8th most prolific confirmed serial killer of all time, Yikes!) Wright Industries, desperately needing to prove their hard stance against metahuman criminals and needing a PR stunt to deflect from their connection to their former CEO re-awakened Erato. They weren’t the most powerful or best performing of the Muses, but they were above average, obedient, and had an easy enough to monitor and control power set with little risk for property damage to boot, the perfect choice. Erato then took to the streets of Boston acting basically as a vigilante, following orders, stopping minor crimes, and sometimes working alongside the police. They attracted the attention of The Viceroy, a semi-retired 56 year old hero who never registered in spite of it being compulsory legally. They both have the ability to copy the powers of others, though he can just by sight, and he has body elasticity too. These make him durable and extremely adaptable, add to that his detective skills and he’s something of a local Boston legend. He took them in as his Protégé. Though they remained distant for quite some time with Erato still coming and going between his place and Wright Industries, having promised not to reveal his assistance to the doctors who Erato reported their work to. It was this way for about a year and a half before the campaign started and Erato began living with Viceroy full time, no longer wanting to go back to Wright Industries as they began to think more independently and consider what they wanted for them self more. During this time Erato had chance encounters with each of the other characters a few times as they also did minor vigilante work, peaking with a villain who is a member of Superhuman, an extremist pro-metahuman group, attacked the school that Josephine, Les, and Amanda all attend. After that incident Erato was prompted by Viceroy to contact each of these other young potential heroes to form a team, The Upstarts. Additionally during this time Viceroy took in Enid who had been abandoned by her biological father and had been getting bounced around foster care. Over time the three of them have become kind of a weird family, living in a warehouse full of cats with a couple of bedrooms grafted on and an ultra secret basement lair underneath full of advanced stuff Viceroy makes. Though Erato and Enid have definitely had their ups and down, more recently in the story (and we’ve been doing this campaign for well over a year now) they’ve been putting in serious effort to better their relationship and be good adoptive siblings to one another. I love their relationship a lot, they’re good kids.
That gets us up to the start of the campaign but hoo boy, I’ve been writing for like, an hour now. Since then Erato’s helped take down a nazi-aligned terrorist organization, they’ve got a boyfriend in their teammate, Les, and they’ve made friends outside of their core group of teammates. They’ve also enrolled in school doing well on some classes and poorly in others, namely learning how to Code and Woodworking. Currently they’re at a sleep away summer camp for superpowered kids called Camp Justice, about 10 miles outside of Boston. They really, really hate it there. Constant supervision, being made to do tests, things scheduled out against their will, inability to leave the area? Yeah that certainly reminds them of something. The difference between it and school, which does share these features, is they wanted to go to school. They very much Did Not want to go to camp. As a result they’re finally going to have to start facing the trauma they’ve got from their origin and also actually tell the others other than Les and Amanda about their sisters. Whiiiiich...Enid saw one of them disassembled and showed off in parts at a school science fair display set up by Wright Industries to gauge interest in students. And she hasn’t mentioned this to Erato...for 4 months Uh Oh! Lastly, here’s my tag I use mostly for art I make of them, it includes some texts posts and picrew dumps too though, lol. Well, that was fun and all but- rp pet peeves. Stuff under the cut. Pour one out for the entire community, because I’m about to take a pound of flesh from everyone.
There’s a lot of stuff in here that boils down to just being a good writing partner and all that, trying to advance the action in a natural way, and so on… and I think a lot of it can boil down to either a lack of awareness or a lack of experience. People get better at writing by writing, so I find it hard to really be frustrated and stay frustrated by someone who falls into some of these pitfalls. So you’ll notice I don’t really target things that have to do with writing skill as much as I target ‘attitude’ and ‘conscientiousness’. There is a lot that bothers me though, so here’s a short list.
Criticizing the way other people have fun. This is a big one. What this boils down to is conversations about how “this ship isn’t realistic” or “your ideals on writing are dumb” or “you take writing too seriously/not seriously enough.” I’ve seen all of these. And I used to know someone on a forum-based RP site that would actively go out of her way to criticize that people would include a lot of introspection in scenes that were fast paced. For instance, using poetic language, or talking about how they’re feeling, what the situation was, “he felt like he was up against the tide, that his heart was being torn in two, a cut made deeper with every clash of their blades” - stuff like that. She hated it. And she made sure everyone knew that she did not approve of how much they were writing, because it was ‘not realistic’. And yes, there is definite merit to the claim that people do not have time to introspect about their entire lives and their relationship to their allies and enemies between sword swings... But so what. I don’t think it’s wrong to advocate for shorter, simpler posts with less descriptive text, and to manage in 200 words instead of 600. That’s great. Simplicity has value, being concise is great, ‘brevity is the soul of wit’, whatever. But the problem, the problem was that she would criticize others for writing in a way that they enjoyed. No one got on her case for writing less, but she was so grating on this point that eventually people just did not want to be around her.
It was something I’ve experienced even here. Finding the balance between “writing to improve your ability to write” and “writing just to have fun” are two separate matters. People forget that individuals exist from both camps, and I have known people (multiple) who say ‘this is important to me, I’m growing my skills using RP as a medium’ but fail to empathize and recognize that not everyone has the same viewpoint. Caring about things that make you feel something over technically good and well executed writing does not make you a problem.
And as a big follow up, I find that this is a big issue in life in general. I think that people often forget how much time it took them to learn a certain thing, recognize their own investment, or recognize the disparity between their own idea of ‘common knowledge’ vs actually common knowledge. When I joined the community, I did not know what private, selective, independent, mun, muse, or mutuals meant. For someone who’s brand new, these are terms that can be hard to decipher. And it’s the similar with ships - I think that people forget that not everyone who comes to RP is from a writing background. Some of them may just have enjoyed reading fanfiction, or may have enjoyed their favorite bot lane duo, or they have a main and their partner has a main and they like the aesthetic. So long as it’s not inherently problematic (incest, pedophilia), it’s cruel to degrade someone and call everything that doesn’t make perfect sense a ‘crackship’. Fanart also has a big role to play in this. Do I personally like Sona with Ka/yn, Yas, Sy/las, Jh/in, or Dra/ven? No, I don’t. I don’t, but equally, it’s not right for me to get in someone’s face for liking it. If you love MF/Sona because it’s a fuckin’ sick classic wombo combo bot lane... that’s cool, more power to you. I wish people would ease up and remember to just let people have their fun. There’s a Jh/in that follows me, who politely asked if I shipped it and I said no, and then there was no hard feelings at all. And that is ideal for me. Really.

And being ultra conscious of it. I am in a very unfortunate circumstance that many of my Sona hcs are very similar to another blog in the space. I found that out by accident, and we reached similar (but also different!) conclusions. But now I am terribly terrified of ever speaking to them, because gods above I want to lift all my duplicates into the air, kiss them, and scream about them... but I don’t want anyone to feel anxious that I’m copying them. It’s also why until about a week ago, I only followed one other Sona blog ever - written by one of my very, very close friends. I never want people to feel like I’m stealing from them, but I also want my duplicates to feel comfortable on my blog! I want them to feel okay about reblogging art of their characters if they like it or talking to me about things... And I’ve put in a lot of effort to be very divergent with my portrayals, but I still ended up in this situation. I won’t name names ( and I really hope that no one bothers that other Sona, because she’s a genuine sweetheart and deserves love and appreciation ),  b ut... This is a big issue for me.
And it’s exacerbated by the fact that some people are lazy as fuck and actually just straight up steal ideas. It’s not ‘inspired by’, which I usually take care to do, giving proper credits or speaking about where I got information from or from whom or that it is on some level almost collaborative (because this is a collaborative space where we interact with each other, but that’s another topic). But I mean some people just recklessly steal and because we all have anxiety (TM), the line between coincidence, inspiration, and theft blurs. Understand that on some level, plagarism is an ethical dilemma, and I exist in the camp that says “hey man that’s cool come talk to me” - but I can exist in that camp because I insist on a very divergent interpretation that is almost ‘theft-proof’. I do not think any other Sona blog will ever have this combination of headcanons: “is a construct inspired by a house spirit, made up of one part crashed titan goddess, three parts demons, and each demon is represented by one of the strings of the instrument, which by the way shattered because bad reasons”. But if you’re not me, it’s hard to... stay loose about it.
And it’s hard to not get jealous.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. Alright I wrote down a list when I actually got this ask, so let’s run off that. ( Yuki, you fuck, you’re not done? Fuck no I’m not done. ) These next ones are big for me.
MISREPRESENTING YOUR WANTS / YOURSELF
what does that mean, you ask me. It means this. It means pretending to be interested in ideas or interactions, even if you’re not interested. I do not ever want to be in the situation where I am happily chugging along, talking about a dynamic, and then find out that the other person isn’t as interested.
It’s fine to be mellow about it dude. I would rather know that you’re like... just okay on it all. I don’t want you to be polite and ‘spare my feelings’ and force yourself.
I want you to have fun. Have fun. God just have fun, you know? Please. There are a ton of interactions I’m “just okay” with, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I can be just okay with stuff and it’s fine. Not everything needs to click instantly but like...
Only showing interest to appeal to me or spare my feelings kinda sucks. It doesn’t last forever. It feels really bad. And eventually when things fall apart, it feels even worse. Like oh you really just did not care that much. Or you didn’t enjoy writing with me? Or what is it? See: jealousy/anxiety. Just be honest.
I think you especially have seen this with me, but I have a penchant for just being sincere and honest about how I feel about things. At least a little bit.
Don’t share things people tell you in confidence.
Fucking duh but it needs to be stated. Sometimes people gotta vent. It happens. And I get that ‘talking behind someone’s back’ is not great, but expressing frustration is a real thing that has real value. And then finding out that those things were shared. If I didn’t bring it up with them myself, I didn’t want them to know. Duh. I’m not talking to be catty but because I’m upset. S h i t. Some of the drama that I’ve seen happen from others doing this (and not to me, but in various cases) was entirely unavoidable. I’ve seen so many variants of this. It’s dumb dude. It’s dumb.
Hard vs Soft statements (Stating opinions as facts)
This is another one that gets me. I come from a world where we write, ‘Sona tries to’ and so on to others. Tumblr as a whole doesn’t seem to conceptually engage with the idea of ‘interrupting actions’ and accepting that interactions are a little malleable. And it in turn reflects how others speak about characters.
I never see, “I think Sona is”, I see “Sona is.” This is such a minor little thing, and I’ve come to accept that it’s part of the culture, but it can be terribly frustrating when others speak about your characters. I often say things like “I see Sona as” or “Because of xyz, Ori/anna would probably-” etc. But that isn’t something that I see here from some people. I know that I do this a lot less these days, in part because I have acclimated to the culture.
Incidentally, there are some joke versions of this that are also frustrating. People can really think they’re being funny, but end up just shutting you out of the conversation entirely when they say ‘No’. I might be a little too sensitive to this though, in that I often disengage from conversations because “it’s not really about my interpretation, so it’s better if I not say anything because it’s not relevant and doesn’t contribute.”
Really, I’m just a weenie baby, but I know when someone’s being rude vs when it’s just my own anxieties. I don’t expect everyone to have unshakable confidence, I also don’t expect that everyone be quivering in their boots. Some people can be really, really dismissive and it’s kind of not so great because it comes along with them otherwise being pretty neat.
Last one: Misrepresentation of data / using a ‘preponderance of evidence’ when there really isn’t that much.

Phew. Okay that’s done. That right there is a big problem (and in combination with the pet peeve before that, it gets worse.)
Something to understand is that sometimes there is no good reason to pipe up to correct someone. Often, people are having a visceral, gut reaction and it’s very emotional. Criticizing that ignores the intent (that they’re frustrated), so it’s often a good idea to let it be.
But that doesn’t stop me from seeing that facts are poorly stated or misrepresented. The community likes to talk about league so I see it in OOC posts, and I also see claims that are just wrong. They’re misstated, exaggerated, or phrased in such a way that you could accept them - except one fact check will prove otherwise. But again, why get in someone’s face when they’re frustrated?
But this leads to some people feeling ‘complicit acceptance’. Which is in itself another problem that I won’t get into.
I as a person tend to be pretty rigorous. If I see facts and I can check them with a quick google search, I often do - especially League. It’s so easy to check a champion’s win rate or popularity. Other people do not always exercise this rigor.

Yeah okay you make a fair and valid point, except for the part where you missed bullet points 2-4. I’m more talking about the general attitude people have but let’s talk specifically more about RP.
There’s content. A lot of content. And most of it is really vague, because that’s how R I O T G A M E S does things. We still can’t get a straight answer on whether Sona’s adopted mom, Lestara, is alive or not. H u h?
And this often leads to us making connections and conclusions based on the limited data we have. We’re extrapolating, taking what we know and trying to figure out something new.
Except when we get a new data set, sometimes our extrapolations don’t work anymore.
Except we just spent three months world building around our guesses ( because that’s what they are)
Oops I’m divergent now.
That happens. A lot. My entire blog was evidence of that, where I made extreme guesses and then accidentally got validated as Demacia went full grimdark. But it even happened last year, when suddenly we gained new information! Mage registration! That’s a thing! And it changes how we perceive things.
And you may be thinking, ‘ok fine but what does that have to do with misrepresentation’ and it has this to do with it. People will make conclusions based on their own view, then solidify these conclusions as ‘fact’.
For example, I wrote a small article on how “magical sight was not a reasonable power to have” and then soon after, Mageseekers appeared. Oops. Oops.
And these extrapolations get treated as though they are really fact. The line between what is ‘real’ and what is ‘assumed’ blurs. The truth is this. Unless it’s directly and unambiguously stated, it’s basically not fact. “But we can conclude-” I know. And then we’ll get new information and that’ll change. Ideas in this fandom are like balloons, you need to tie them down with text evidence or they’ll just float away before you even know it. I can talk about how Sona is a literal genius level intellect all day, and tomorrow I can be proven wrong by one little shift or clarification in the lore. ‘Within months’ - okay how many months? Fifteen months? Three months? Unknown.
And this leads me to preponderance of ‘evidence’. This one is long because it bothers me a bunch.
‘Preponderance of evidence’ (quotes required) is basically the situation in which someone goes and tells me:
“Listen buddy, I have these seven pieces of evidence, so I can reasonably conclude that [x] is true.” And that’s solid conjecture and extrapolation and I accept that.
Except that maybe you seven pieces of evidence aren’t all solid pieces of evidence.
Oh.
Oh no.
And that’s happened. I have seen evidence pieces one, two, four, and six all be good. And pieces three, five, and seven are a stretch at best.
But because they have so many pieces of evidence, it’s hard to critique back. Because they still do have four good pieces of evidence!
But the strength of the conclusion increases with more accurate and valid data points, and if your data points aren’t-
And that’s the rub, basically. Sometimes I see people fit evidence to their conclusion without even realizing it. Some of the most intelligent, rigorous, and well-versed writers on this site I’ve seen do it.
And it sucks.
And it’s a peeve because here’s  the truth.
The truth after all this talk is this very important fact.
I don’t say anything about these things to people because I don’t want to ruin anyone’s fun or engagement.
People make mistakes and say many things because they are passionate about what they’re talking about. Often that’s the case. And harmless conjecture misunderstandings are not the end of the world because this is not academia.
except that one time I wrote a writeup on how Aphe/lios isn’t mute but whatever.
And so while I have said all these things and have a lot of these feelings, I also think there’s no point to saying most of them directly to the person that bugs me. What good will it do? To someone who is reacting with their emotions and just wants to get their frustration out, or is speaking passionately about something... Just let it go.
And so often I let it go, even if I disagree. I have an opinion, but I don’t go out and toss it back in your face. I just get mad quietly and grump about it.
And that’s why I end up being a very ‘stay in my lane’ person.

Her Story | Chapter 3: Memories, Part 1

Julien sighed as he sank into a seat on the subway, clutching the camera case and tripod protectively on his lap, and took a moment to close his eyes. The day had been more hectic than expected.
After his morning meeting, he had received an urgent call from a previous client, an actor, requesting emergency headshots needed the next day. Due to scheduling conflicts, he had been forced to rush to Queens to meet the actor immediately in order to keep his 3 p.m. appointment with Hubert. He could have taken a cab, but Julien never took cabs by principle. So his route involved the subway and a fair deal of running—again. At least he could thank this off-the-fly lifestyle for his relatively fit physique. 
Now, with that behind him and his stomach grumbling from a missed lunch, he was riding back to Central Park to meet Hubert. Leaning his head back against the window, he hoped he would be able to grab something to eat from the station. He slitted his eyes to peek at his phone and check the time. Ugh. He was cutting it close. 
The train finally arrived and with a deep breath, Julien shouldered his equipment and filed out of the train car with a few other passengers. Holding his breath as the subway stench pummeled him, he pushed his way through the turnstile and headed toward the light. No time for a pastry and coffee. He was barely going to make it on time. 
Entering Central Park, Julien took a moment to appreciate how clean the park was, and how effectively the bustle of the city was kept out of the living oasis. It really was beautiful, especially now that the leaves had partially begun to change colors. It was as if he had entered another world. Perfect place to hold a photoshoot for a cellist, especially as the warm wood colors would be mirrored in the tinted tree leaves. 
He checked his phone to confirm where Hubert would be, and that he was walking in the right direction. It shouldn’t be far. As if to confirm that thought, Julien could hear a strain of low notes rise above the sound of tree leaves shaking in the breeze. With every few steps, the sound grew louder. Sure enough, before long a man came into view, seated at a bench in a slight alcove, hemmed by wooden fences and nestled between two large trees. 
It was Hubert, pulling long notes across the body of his cello, eyes closed and his body swaying with the melody. Several park-goers were listening from a distance, either on their own benches or passing by, but Hubert was alone. Once again, he was dressed in all black, this time in a slim turtleneck sweater. His simple ensemble provided a stark contrast to the colorful, busy surroundings. 
At first, Julien didn’t do or say anything to call attention to himself. He just listened. He didn’t have much experience with music, but this particular melody seemed familiar to him. He tried to remember where he had heard it. It didn’t sound like one of the “typical” classical pieces that he’d heard in his life. He wasn’t sure if the song was contemporary or one that had been written centuries ago. But the long, soaring notes forced him into introspection. The song felt like it held some significance for him, but he just couldn’t remember why. 
Is there an app that can identify a hummed melody? Julien vaguely mused. As he was contemplating ways to mentally store the melody to track it down later, the music abruptly stopped and he realized Hubert had opened his eyes and noticed Julien's presence. 
“Julien! Hey,” Hubert greeted him, standing and leaning the cello against the bench in one fluid motion. Setting the bow down, he held out a hand for Julien and took a step forward. “Glad you could make it." 
Julien shook his hand, grinning. “You sounded great.” 
“Thanks, nothing better than playing outdoors. I don’t usually do it,” he said sheepishly. "Excessive sunlight can be harmful to a wooden instrument. But it’s ok for a little while." 
“The photoshoot shouldn’t be a problem right? It might take a couple hours." 
“It should be fine." 
Julien nodded, relieved. “Couldn’t be a better time for an outdoor photoshoot. It looks gorgeous out here." 
“That it does,” Hubert nodded in agreement. 
Julien couldn’t help but bring it up. “Uh… that song you were playing…" 
Hubert looked at him inquisitively, but there was something else hidden in his expression, like a knowing smile he was concealing. “What about it?" 
“It sounded… kind of familiar. Is that a… er, classical song?” Julien cursed his lack of knowledge about music. He didn’t even know how to talk about it. 
“No,” Hubert said with a chuckle. “I learned it from my mother." 
“Your… mother?” Julien narrowed his eyes. That didn’t give him much information, Hubert didn’t seem like he was going to say any more. Anyway, Julien brushed it off. It wasn’t that important, and they had a limited amount of time before sunset would begin. “Ok, let’s get started I guess. This spot looks pretty good actually. Unless you want to pick another place?" 
“This spot is fine,” Hubert agreed, picking up the cello to resume his former position. “We can take posed shots later too, but do you mind if I play a little more? That way you can capture some candid shots of me playing. I personally like the energy better than posed shots." 
“Sounds like a plan.” Julien grinned and nodded in affirmation, setting his camera bag and tripod on an adjacent bench and extracting the camera. He wouldn’t need the tripod. He flicked the camera switch on, took a few test shots, and adjusted the shutter speed to get the right exposure. 
Hubert started playing. It was the same song again. As he circled Hubert, capturing him from various angles and distances, he found himself paying more attention to the song than he usually did to any music. He wasn’t really a music person. Usually he would just put on some jazz while he did computer work to fill up the silence, but it was more like a background cushion for him. But for some reason, listening to this, he felt all of his senses heightened, and an excitement catching in his chest. He felt alert, and his mind seemed to wrap itself around every note. A few times, he had to remind himself what he was doing in the middle of focusing a shot, consciously tearing his mind away from the melody. 
Once they had transitioned to the posed shots, where Hubert was no longer playing, the black-clad man remained quiet, for the most part just following Julien’s instructions, eyeing him for guidance or nodding to indicate when he was ready. 
Photography, Julien thought, was a lot like drawing. Drawing with light. That’s literally what the word photography meant. You had to have a vision in mind and guide the subject into it. But unlike drawing, where you could always modify the lines once you noticed a flaw a few days later with fresh eyes, photography had to be done right the first time. So a photographer’s eye had to be carefully trained to identify potential flaws and correct them right away. That included everything people didn’t usually look at, such as the subject’s feet and the background of the shot. 
Julien went through the motions of the photoshoot confidently, focused on analyzing the shots, making minor tweaks, and actualizing the angles that they hadn’t tried yet, eyes trained on Hubert’s face and posture to identify issues and capture the essence he was trying to bring out. He spoke to Hubert, sometimes joking and sometimes describing an emotion or scene, to bring out different moods to capture. 
This almost felt like a normal photoshoot. Julien almost forgot everything, just going through the motions that came naturally to him, when the words suddenly resurfaced in his mind. Actually, I came for you. 
Hubert’s words when they had first run into each other at the café. Julien hesitated and lowered the camera, eyeing Hubert with a pensive look. 
Hubert noticed and returned the gaze inquisitively. “Huh? Should I change my position?" 
Julien shook his head. “No, sorry, you’re fine. As you were." 
Hubert reverted to the pose. 
Had Hubert really just wanted a photoshoot? It seemed strange. For some reason, Julien felt like what Hubert had told him was just an excuse for the real reason why he’d come looking for him. But why would Hubert be looking for him? Julien couldn’t really explain why he was searching for a deeper meaning behind their interaction. But there was something about the whole encounter that had seemed… somehow remarkable to him. As if something important were about to happen. 
If you asked Julien, he would probably tell you he was a rational person who followed his head. But he followed his heart more than he’d like to admit. Maybe that’s what had led him to turn down a stable position in a company and pursue his dream of being a freelance photographer in the first place. 
And right now his heart, his intuition, was telling him that he had to talk to Hubert. Despite the scarcity of words they had exchanged, Julien felt intensely that Hubert was part of a world that he needed to also be part of. Like there was something Hubert had to say that Julien really wanted to hear. 
So at the end of the photoshoot, once Julien had slipped the camera back in its bag and was watching Hubert hoist the cello back into the white hard case, he invited him to grab a cup of coffee. 
The shoot had gone smoothly—they had wrapped it up in about an hour, so the sun was still up, and there were still a couple hours of daylight remaining. Without plans for the rest of the day, Julien was feeling whimsical. And he gave in to the pull in his heart to find out more about his new client. Hubert hadn’t answered yet, so he asked again. “So how about it? Coffee?” He was still hungry anyway. Work finished, the stomach-rumbling was back.
Clicking the case shut, Hubert looked up with pursed lips. He seemed to be thinking it over. “I have a flight tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. I was hoping to get an early nap in since I have to leave the house at 3:30 a.m., but... I guess there’s enough time to grab a cup of coffee." 
Julien felt a twinge of guilt, but didn’t back down. “Great! I know a nice little café near here."
