I’m always a little nervous sending a scarian request but I just love the way you write them<3 so can I get scarian 10 pls 🤲
10. transparent / tangled (x) (839 words)
Grian is trying to make a sweater better. No. He’s trying to fix the holes in his sweater with thread and needles from a compass. The thread is tangled in his hands. It’s dark red, like his sweater. His sweater is draped over his knee, and the patches sit in his lap. Grian threads the needle.
He’s in an undershirt far too thin for the rapidly cooling autumn weather. Scar’s cloak is draped over his shoulders. Scar is sitting by the fireplace, his back to the flame. He’s reading the book off Grian’s bookshelf, tracing the words under his fingertips. Grian feels goosebumps on his skin.
“Why do we keep playing that game even when it breaks us?"
Scar looks up toward him. Grian looks up from his hands holding the needle and thread, still trying to spool it around it's bobbin. His eyebrows knit together.
"What d'you mean?"
"The death game," Scar says slowly. "Why do we keep playing it? Why do you keep setting it up? When you know it's horrible?"
"Was never supposed to be horrible..." Grian settles, twisting his hands. He starts to sew again. He pulls the thread through a part of his sweater. He’s sewing in a patch of blue on the elbow. He’ll be sewing patches into the shoulders too, just for the sake of it. It’s threadbare, but he can’t replace it until he’s knit a new one. And he'll have to ask Gem for the spinning wheel to do that. He has too many sweaters in too many colors and not much else. "It was supposed to be fun."
"It is, most of the time,” Scar lays back. Grian watches him pull a pillow from the chair beside him, propping it behind his head. He stretches out, crossing his ankles. It can’t be good for his back, but Grian doesn’t stop him. “But then you kill your friends, and you betray them, and you hurt them."
Scar doesn’t sound upset when he says this. He states it as if it’s fact. Part of it is; it’s a token of the games. You're tangled in the awfulness of it all. You’re always expecting someone to do something. But it was never the original intention. The first one was a game, something to keep him occupied. Something to keep other people satiated, maybe. (Though he may not ever say that. Whether or not someone heard it and whether or not that was true was for only him to know.)
"Suppose you do," Grian trails. He drops his hands in his lap. "It's...I get bored here. I know you do too, not quite mortal." He gestures to Scar with his needle before he punches it back through the fabric. Scar snorts.
"It's kind of a sick sort of fun,” he finishes. “Knowing you'll die eventually.”
"I guess so...” Scar hums. “I guess life always goes back to normal."
Normal. What did that word even mean anymore? Was there a sense of normalcy anymore? How far did they push the envelope? How much irreparable damage did they do?
Scar was still lying there, and Grian was still sitting on the floor in his house and was still sleeping next to him if he wasn’t studying in the ground below them. He was still talking and laughing and enjoying the company of a man he spent time betraying. He was still cooking for them and carving out time to do nothing at all except sit and bask and. Oh.
"Guess doesn't make it hurt any less, though, I suppose," he says, mostly as an afterthought. They’re still a game. A game can hurt the same. Scar sighs, folding his hands over his sternum.
"Never does."
Grian turns back to his sewing project. Punches the needle through. Back in. Back out.
"Death games do bring people closer, though,” he says, smiling. “Just so you know."
Scar scoffs.
"You're twisted."
Grian shrugs.
"You've never turned it down,” he says. Scar hums.
"No,” he says, and sounds almost surprised. “I suppose not."
Part Grian wonders why that might be. He wonders if Scar has any say at all.
“Do you think there will ever be a next time?” Scar asks him. He turns his head to him, just to look him in the eyes. Grian snorts, setting down his needle.
“You want to go through that again? Every other second you were giving me a panic attack.”
Scar shrugs.
“Dunno. You said it yourself. It’s a twisted sort of fun.”
“I guess we’re all a little twisted to keep joining in on it. What’s death when there’s no consequence, hm?”
Scar smiles, and Grian smiles back at him. Something about that smile raises the hair on the back of his neck—something tells him Scar might be scheming for the next time. He’ll want to be on his good side then. They share an unspoken moment like this before Scar turns back to stare at the ceiling and Grian finally finishes his elbow patch.
A death without consequence. What was it, indeed.

ok it's headcanon time for.... grian!!!!
in regards to identity i view him as being aro-spec, while i could find a specific label i feel like c!grian wouldn't care much into finding that label, i think he'd prefer to just identify as being on the spectrum but he wouldn't really put in the time or effort into researching it
he also is asexual!! however im just asexual myself so all my blorbos must be asexual bc it feels. weird if not
and he's gay!!! gay man, gay gay homo (but actually this is mainly just because of yhs where he says hes "no im into dudes", plus i just cannot see c!grian with a woman that man is gay)
i also see him as being on the asensual (sensual attraction is the desire to touch others in a non-sexual way, e.g. cuddling, kissing, etc) spectrum !! mainly demi-asenflux because i feel like he would only like touch from people he's close + sometimes really doesn't want to be touched, but sometimes/alot of the time he really wants to and is the clingiest
he also gives off vibes of being on the aplatonic spectrum but i cannot think of anything in specific, maybe demiplatonic and cupioplatonic? i just feel like smth is up w this man's platonic orientation,, he def wants to have friends and is willing to do so but he only really feels platonic attraction whenever he's actually close to a person
i could probably go more into detail but those are the primary ones in my head for his sexuality so lets (finally) go onto GENDER!!!!
this man is definitely transgenderism!!! he identifies as a trans-man tho i do feel like his standards of being a man definitely differ to society's, he's most definitely gender non-conforming and he mainly wears androgynous or feminine clothing most of the time (though he only really wears skirts or dresses if hes cross-dressing as ariana griande)
he also probably is somewhere on the non-binary spectrum he just doesn't really identify with it
i feel like he primarily uses it/he pronouns? he definitely feels less than human due to his watcher roots so it got used to being called it/its, he also only is called she/her when he's cross-dressing as ariana griande, and if i had to give him some neoprns i feel like he'd enjoy chirp/chirp's? or some sort of parrot themed neopronouns
i also think he wouldn't get top surgery! it's easier for him not to since he only gets dysphoric over the shape they cause (which can easily be solved via a binder) instead of the actual chest itself
ok gender part over now it's time for some other headcanons
this man is definitely 100% neurodivergent, i feel like in particular he has adhd (this man cannot finish the back of his bases and gets distracted off tasks like a dog seeing a squrriel) and autism!!! i feel like he sometimes goes non-verbal (though i feel, as a parrot hybrid, when he's non-verbal he just ends up copying what other people are saying to him, so maybe that could be considered semi-verbal?), i think he would stim ALOT using his wings, he's happy and suddenly u have feathers everywhere because he flapped them alongside his hands
i think he would also have really bad rejection sensitive dysphoria, he definitely dislikes getting rejected from things which leads to him bottling alot of things up and causing plenty of the scarian miscommunication we're all too familiar with
he also stims with bird noises alot! he likes to chirp and squawk when he's happy, tho that may also just be because he's a parrot hybrid
he definitely changes hyperfixations like the wind, one week he likes this one thing and another he likes this other thing, and i feel like he would only really have 1 or 2 special interests that actually stick around (one of them likely being architecture/building, the other probably being birds and such)
he tends to have a very changing routine and schedule due to his adhd HOWEVER he has some routines (mainly with scar in them, who prefers to have very set routines cause that man also has autism) which never change or both of them get stressed out (e.g. morning/night routine, a routine that started in the desert and then followed them onto hermitcraft - they both get very stressed out on the life series since it disrupts their routines)
this was.... alot more text than i was expecting to write but anyway!!! expect a scar one at some point

my howl's moving castle inspired au, the long masterpost:
*will use scar's moving castle as a tag for this!
consider: grian manages a family business with his sister, pearl. their life is anything but glamorous, and grian doesnt have much prospects of ever leaving his town and doing something different. he hears stories about big cities full of possibilities, magic (hes isnt sure if he believes in that), a moving castle and a handsome wizard who steals the hearts of young women;
one day, grian gets cursed by the wizard of the wastes (joel), after he comes into his shop late in the shift and they get into a heated discussion over the existence (or lack, thereof) of magic. joel thinks of it all as just a silly prank, a curse that can be easily lifted or is just naturally disappearing after a few days;
joel girlbossed too close to the sun, though. the curse is bad. grian wakes up finding out that his body has started to grow feathers. its uncomfortable and borderline painful at times, specially on his back;
after properly freaking out, he tries to deal with it as best as he can, chugging some painkillers, wearing oversized clothes and going to work as if nothing is wrong. pearl notices something unusual, tho—perhaps its grian's murderous expression whenever he remembers joel's face. hes going to kill that bastard;
the curse gets progressively worse as the days go by, until grian can no longer easily hide it and pearl finds out by the ungodly amount of feathers spread around their house. she, of course, gets worried, and tell grian they need to find the wizard that cursed him somehow, or perhaps asks someone else for help;
they dont know any other witches and wizards, since, until last week, grian was pretty sure those didnt even exist. until pearl mentions that one dude who apparently steal hearts and was around town with his moving castle;
grian tells her thats a legend to scare young people so they wont go around talking to strangers. pearl argues that she knew of a lady who disappeared after allegedly spending time with the wizard;
grian supposes that man, if he actually exists, isnt the most trustworthy. but 1. hes not a young lady, which appears to be the ones who get their hearts stolen and 2. he has nothing to lose, really, besides some of his time;
pearl offers to go with him, but grian insists for her to stay (shes a young woman, after all). so grian leaves by himself in good old ghibli fashion: taking with him nothing but a block of cheese, some bread and a clock;
he founds the moving castle with ease: its ridiculously big and it makes no sense at all, having many weird bump outs, few windows, a dramatic copper roof and many chimneys. if anything, it looked like the weirdest house ever and nothing like a castle. something about it was still charming, tho: he just couldnt point out what.
development for this au just started, but so far it includes:
scar being weird and overly dramatic, but still charming. he also refuses to pay taxes;
cub as scar's weird demon roommate, with whom he made a contract many years ago. cub is so miserable sometimes that he regrets getting scar's heart (or his soul, whatever). cub keeps the "castle" moving with overly complicated redstone magic and fire that allegedly comes from the depths of hell;
scar sending threatening letters to joel. many of them. demanding for him to break the curse. joel ignores every single one;
he eventually gets pissed and goes with grian to look for joel, who admits the curse wasnt supposed to be that strong and now he doesnt know how to break it. scar turns him into a frog and joel is kept hostage;
joel still does his best to be as annoying as possible despite the limitations of his new body.
it also includes:
scarian falling in love;
found family;
silly cliche romance tropes;
romcom elements;
characters acting like divorced couples;
funky magical men with their funky little spells;
light angst.
i want to write this but im afraid i might not have the time. still want to brainrot tho so im accepting asks! you may also write with this au as long as you credit me! :)
