I want to get into skincare and build a routine, what products would you recommend?

hmmm.. the thing about skincare is that it’s very personalized. like, i don’t think it’s right for someone to say that one product will work all the time for everybody, because that’s just not the case. everybody’s skin reacts differently to different things and has different needs.

if you’re just starting out, you don’t need a thirty step routine, no matter what anyone says. just keep it simple. cleanser > moisturizer > spf.

for cleanser, i like to double cleanse, which is taking an oil-based cleanser, washing your face with that, then following with a second cleanser. i know what you’re thinking: what if i have oily skin? and it’s like... Like attracts like, you know? oily dirt will be taken away, then the rest of it. the oil-based cleanser will also really get rid of all the spf on your face. oil cleansers often have the added benefit of being gentler on the skin than, say, makeup wipes, which can be really abrasive on the skin and can cause you to be rougher than you should. there are a lot of good oil cleansers out there, like the farmacy green clean, hada labo gokujun cleansing oil, then i met you living cleansing balm, dhl deep cleansing oil, and the heimish all clean balm.

for second cleansers, i’m not as picky, particularly because it’s not going to be on the face for too long. i’d advise against splurging on second cleansers, especially ones that advertise a bunch of active ingredients, because a minute’s worth of contact on the skin isn’t really going to do much. depending on your skin type, you might like a different type of second cleanser than someone else: cream, foam, gel, etc. in the end, what you want is something with a pH of about 5 that won’t strip your skin too harshly. i like the cosrx low ph good morning gel cleanser, innisfree green tea pure cleansing foam, and the krave beauty matcha hemp hydrating cleanser.

moisturizers should not be skipped. even if you have oily skin, and you think your oil will save you. (an overproduction of oil can be caused by dehydrated skin or skin with bad water retention, which is a bit more complicated but also.. not really smdlfkjgd) i tend to moisturizers based on the season, just because i wouldn’t want something super heavy on my face during the summer and something super light wouldn’t work well for me during the winter. i like the etude house soon jung 2x barrier intensive cream, klairs rich moist soothing cream, and the olay regenerist micro-sculpting cream. 

spf is a bit harder to shop for, particularly for people of color. a lot of mineral sunscreens leave a white cast on darker skin tones, whereas a lot of people either aren’t comfortable using a chemical formulation or frequent areas where they’re not allowed (e.g. some chemical filters aren’t reef-safe, so beaches don’t allow some chemical filters). take these recommendations with a grain of salt, because while i do have... some melanin, i’m unable to truly do a real “white cast” test. spf is also the one skincare product i will consistently splurge on; spf of 35 at least, but anything more than 50 is just a gimmick. i prefer chemical formulations: make p:rem uv defense me blue ray sun gel, krave beauty the beet shield, sonrei sea clearly (reef-safe, but thick; don’t recommend for a day-to-day wear if you don’t go to the beach often, i like the finish though), and supergoop unseen sunscreen (similar to the sonrei but lighter). i don’t wear mineral sunscreens very often, but here are some i’ve tried before and liked: versed guards up daily mineral sunscreen, klairs mid day blue uv shield.
