less generic homophobic macho man trapper more trapper with catholic guilt
#i think there's a lot of POTENTIAL for an interesting story about him dealing with internalized homophobia#but the popular fanon interpretation just doesn't hold water imo#he's not as effeminate as hawkeye but fanfic writers have a tendency to flanderize him or just make up traits entirely#usually to either conflate or contrast him with bj#meanwhile what little information we get about his upbringing paints a way more interesting picture#i don't remember which episode but iirc at one point he said his parents wanted him to be a priest#his name is literally john /francis xavier/ mcintyre#and south boston was FAMOUSLY heavily irish catholic at that time#but he also explicitly tells mulcahy he's not catholic in another episode#and when asked to name a religion he immediately says atheist#also idk there's something about 'i peeked at the end frank. the devil did it'#i wanna know the backstory there!! what effect has being raised catholic had on him and what made him move away from it#what's his relationship with his parents like#what's his relationship with MULCAHY like#they have so few on screen interactions but their similarities and differences make me insane#sorry i have incurable in love with trapper john disease. i will post about him again#mash#my posts
