For Lacan, the reality of human beings is constituted by three inter tangled levels: the Symbolic, the Imaginary, and the Real. This triad can be nicely illustrated by the game of chess. The rules one has to follow in order to play it are its symbolic dimension: from the purely formal symbolic standpoint, 'knight' is defined only by the moves this figure can make. This level is clearly different from the imaginary one, namely the way in which different pieces are shaped and characterized by their names (king, queen, knight), and it is easy to envision a game with the same rules, but with a different imaginary, in which this figure would be called 'messenger' or 'runner' or whatever. Finally, real is the entire complex set of contingent circumstances that affect the course of the game: the intelligence of the players, the unpredictable intrusions that may disconcert one player or directly cut the game short."

Eric “Ric Riggler” Rhea

Snow sports and music have the ability to transcend barriers and unite individuals across a landscape populated by differences in location, religion, age, ethnicity and political affiliation. A shared sense of passion and similar mindset forge these bonds. Eric “Ric Riggler” Rhea is a Detroit native residing in New York City who pours his heart and soul into snowboarding and music. He’s a member of the Soulboarders an affiliate of the National Brotherhood of Skiers and began creating rap videos to commemorate their annual trips in the United States, Canada and Japan. If you’ve spent any time perusing social media, hopefully you’ve enjoyed one of Eric’s first three edits: Snowboard Anthem #1, Snowboard Anthem #2 (my personal favorite) and Snowboard Anthem #3  for the record, after extensive research we can confirm that the snow is indeed “so good in the motherfucking backcountry.”     

-SAM: Tell me about your background

-ERIC:  I was born and raised in Detroit, MI and introduced to skiing in 1975 at age four by my parents and a very close family friend who was like an aunt to me. My aunt introduced my parents to the sport skiing with the oldest Black ski club in the world, The Jim Dandy Ski Club of Detroit, MI.  I instantly found my passion for the mountain and skiing the first time I stepped on skis.

- I began rapping and producing music at the age of 13 years old and found my love for hip-hop and music the first time I heard a rap song and new I wanted to be a part of this musical movement in the early 1980s. I even pursued a career in the music industry and was able to work directly with two Detroit artists that are considered to be two of the best rap lyricists in hip-hop, Eminem and Royce Da 5'9".

- I began snowboarding in 1998 and found a renewed and heightened passion for the mountain when I was able to make the switch from two sticks to a board. Both my passion for hip-hop and snowboarding have consistently remained my two biggest passions.  "The Black Powder Movement" is the best of both worlds for me as it allows me to blend my two biggest passions where I create music and rap about the mountain and life on a snowboard. 

Eventually Eric stepped back from the production aspect of the music industry and is currently employed in the interior design/furniture field. However, he has a studio setup inside his home where he records his tracks and edits the video. I asked about his creative process and if he began each trip with a mental storyboard? Instead he compiles GoPro footage from the group and the journey of crafting the lyrics to match the action and tell a story begins - meandering organically until he’s finally satisfied.

    Recently Eric completed a 7 track E.P. entitled Eric “Ric Riggler” Rhea - The Black Powder Movement to accompany the first three Snowboard Anthem songs - it’s available on Soundcloud. Eric’s positivity is pervasive throughout his music and interactions. Tele Mike is one of his close riding partners and a collaborator on the album, he eloquently sums up the concepts Eric portrays:   

“My man E. Rhea is just killing it on the vocals and lyrics for his Black Powder Movement album release. Please give the rest of his album a listen as the music is truly unique in that it focuses on skiing and riding especially in the backcountry. Eric is a powder hound for sure. He has the best PMA (Positive Mountain Attitude) of any rider that I know. I ski, mountain bike, and rock climb with Eric as if we were 10 year old kids running and playing around the neighborhood. Except our neighborhoods are the major mountain ranges on the planet. I was honored that Eric asked me to collaborate with him on this piece. Hopefully people can appreciate that even the concept that Black Men Ski is special and unique. It’s special and unique in the fact that we want to continue to portray the black culture in a positive manner especially given the times. What I have experienced in the black ski community is a positive unity and love as opposed to a lot of fighting and confrontation that can happen in our struggling neighborhoods. Skiing and riding brings a smile and infectious joy to our lives. Obviously skiing and riding is not new. We have not reinvented anything in the sport. We are just adding to the social demographics of who is participating in the ski culture at all levels of the sport. Furthermore, many of these video clips come from all over the world. So we also love to share in the oneness of the skiing and riding community regardless of country, social economics, race, religion, sexual preference or anything else that seeks to separate us as citizens on this planet. For me, not one of my ski mountaineering or backcountry teachers was a person of color. But I love that we can all bond and build a connected community that is collectively grounded in the beautiful human experience of gliding down the mountain. -SAM: What’s in store for you this winter?

-ERIC: 2018 includes the quest for the best powder in the world.  January trips include Whistler, BC Canada with helicopter and skinning tours and minimal resort riding on the agenda.  A forth trip to Hokkaido Japan in five seasons with a planned hike of Mount Yotei on the agenda.  And back country excursions in Colorado throughout the season to explore the vast areas of back country access the Rocky Mountains offer.

-2019 already has Kashmir and Gulmarg on the agenda in search for some of the most amazing powder on the world.  Several of my closest riding partners in the Black ski and snowboard community will be taking this journey with me.

The RAKA Surfskate Inspired by Luz (@luzbyluz) is a handcrafted Peartree longboard. Pear tree is strong wood and has good elasticity characteristics to guarantee a comfortable ride. Soulgoodiez designs longboards with a soul. For our Artboards we use graphics of artists to laser over our board in order to put the Soul of the Artist in our Boards.
