Although iconic in New Orleans, ironwork (wrought iron and later cast iron) was not added to buildings and homes here until the mid-1800’s during the Victorian era. They are influenced by Spanish architecture and many of them have a story or history to tell. Prior to this, buildings and balconies would have been bound by tall wooden columns. “The Alcazar Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida was built in 1888 and was often called “the castle of happy returns.” Built by Henry Morrison Flagler, founder of Standard Oil, the hotel hosted more than 25,000 guests during its early winter seasons. Flagler commissioned the hotel for wealthy tourists traveling to the South for the winter on his railroad. The hotel included many recreational activities including a casino, three-story grand ballroom, steam room, massage parlor, gymnasium, bowling alley, tennis courts, bicycle academy, sulfur baths, and the world’s largest indoor swimming pool at the time. After years as an elegant resort, the Alcazar closed in 1932 and was purchased in 1947 by Chicago publisher Otto C. Lightner to house his extensive Victorian era collection. He later turned it over to the city of St. Augustine.Designed in the Spanish Renaissance Revival style, the building is now the Lightner Museum and houses antiquities mostly from the American Gilded age. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places..
