Notes from the Field

I've got a six-page "short take" article in the latest issue of Railroad History (no. 229). The subject is some of the remaining semaphore signals on the Santa Fe Railway in New Mexico; it's a follow-up to my much longer 2019 article in the same publication (no. 221).

Most of the aging semaphore signals of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway have come down in recent years, replaced by modern devices. But eleven of the 100-year old sentinels soldier on with no replacement signals positioned adjacently. My article provides the location of all, images of several, along with the appearance of Amtrak's Southwest Chief, which is the only train on the line currently tripping these ancient implements.

Tip #221: ZOOM TO MAKE A POINT. This tip isn’t for those who view zooming as just plain wrong—the cinematic equivalent of bad grammar like “It’s me.” But if you’re in the group that thinks rules are meant to be broken—or that in art there should be no rules—then here’s an observation that you might find useful: The best zooms are those that wind up with a payoff—that make a point. You want the viewer to say “Wow!” The two fames here were taken from a @virtualrailfan streaming video shot at Barstow, California. At the time that the video streamed, rail had been chatting about the coronavirus situation. The first frame is a medium longshot of club cars on the Southwest Chief #4 operated by @Amtrak. The camera operator then zoomed in to give us the second frame.
