David Lynch on the origins of the Log Lady
The Log Lady was a character I’d been thinking about for Catherine Coulson since 1973. The Log Lady originally lived where Jack and Catherine lived, which was on the second floor of a Spanish-style apartment building off Beachwood Drive in L.A. I pictured the Log Lady’s stories starting in that room, and the fireplace would be boarded up, her husband having died in a forest fire. His ashes were in an urn on the mantel along with his pipes that he smoked. She always carried a log and she had a little son, maybe five or so, and she starred in I’ll Test My Log with Every Branch of Knowledge, which was kind of a learning show.
Tumblr media
She doesn’t drive, so they always take cabs. If they go to the dentist she carries the log, and the dentist would put the log in the chair and put a little bib around the log, and then look for cavities, talking all the time so the kid would understand something about dentistry. He would talk about decay, and how they fill a cavity and what they use to fill it, and the importance of brushing your teeth and keeping the oral cavity clean.
For some episodes they’d go to a certain diner and they’d sit together, her carrying the log, and the little boy next to her, and they’d order something and sit there. In my mind the diner held possibilities for side stories that could be interesting. So Catherine and I would occasionally talk about this idea.
Years later we’re shooting the Twin Peaks pilot and we’re about to shoot a scene in the city hall, where Agent Cooper and Sheriff Truman are going to talk to the people about this murder that’s occurred. I thought, Okay, this is an opportunity, so I call Catherine and tell her, “You’re going to be carrying the log, and your job is to flip the light switch on and off to get everybody’s attention that it’s time to start this talk.” Catherine said, “Great,” and she flew up and we got her the log and she did the scene and one thing led to another.
The log has this quality, and people started wondering what her story was. She doesn’t make any sense, but she makes sense, and there are people like this in every town and they’re just accepted. She’s a special Twin Peaks person.

Ernest Batchelder: Southern California’s masterful tile maker.
From red Spanish Colonial rooftops to vibrant mosaics to rose pink bathroom vanities, Southern California is filled with tile. Whether big or small, monochromatic or multi-hued, tiles are commonplace here, and rarely are their manufacturers recognized or even considered.
That’s part of what makes Ernest Batchelder such an exceptional case. The tile maker, who died more than 50 years ago, is still known and respected as a brilliant designer and an important contributor to the American Arts and Crafts movement.
As Pasadena architects Charles and Henry Greene were producing innovative home designs that defined California’s signature Craftsman style, Batchelder was close by, making tiles in a backyard studio. Today, many of those tiles are collector’s items, and mantels and fireplace surrounds bearing Batchelder tiles lend historical prestige to otherwise unremarkable prewar homes.

Singer Liam Payne Offers Los Angeles Home To The Tune Of $10.75 Million
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/singer-liam-payne-offers-los-angeles-home-to-the-tune-of-10-75-million/
Singer Liam Payne Offers Los Angeles Home To The Tune Of $10.75 Million
After more than five years of living in the Santa Monica Mountains, English singer-songwriter Liam Payne is ready to pull up stakes.
Payne, who gained fame as a member of the superstar boy band One Direction, is selling his sprawling estate in the hills above Malibu for $10.75 million. Jonah Wilson of Beverly Hills-based brokerage Hilton & Hyland holds the listing.
It doesn’t get much more private than the Los Angeles-area home of former One Direction singer Liam … [] Payne, which sits on five acres in the hills above Malibu.
It’s not the first time that Payne has attempted to sell the property. After acquiring the estate in 2015 for $10 million, the singer tried to turn a significant profit when he popped it on the market three years later for nearly $14 million.
The almost five-acre compound has also been offered for lease over the years, with rates ranging from $40,000-60,000 a month.
The estate, which features multiple structures and a recording studio, was previously offered for … [] lease between $40,000-60,000 a month.
Completely private thanks to a forest of trees surrounding it, the scenic spread comprises a main house, two guesthouses, a recording studio, a teahouse and a mosaic-tiled swimming pools.
Meandering stone paths lead to intimate limestone patios, a koi pond and organic gardens. Near the teahouse, a small vineyard unfolds along the hillside.
A teahouse/meditation room is one of many hidden areas on the property. Behind the teahouse is a … [] small vineyard.
The main house, fashioned in Spanish-style, was built in 1991 for Alan Purwin, the late aerial film operator whose credits include “Transformers” series, “Armageddon” (1998) and “Pearl Harbor” (2001).
Rich in character, the multi-story home is full of hand-hewn walnut floors and paneling, beamed ceilings and custom chandeliers. Each of the home’s five fireplaces has a carved limestone mantel.
The library looks onto the office below.
A vaulted-ceiling great room, a formal dining room, a game room, five bedrooms and eight bathrooms are within nearly 9,700 square feet of living space. The two-story library commands attention with a circular opening to the second floor.
Following the announcement of One Direction’s hiatus in 2016, Payne struck out on is own with the 2017 single “Strip That Down.” Last year, he released his debut solo album LP1, which features collaborations with Ed Sheeran, Quavo, Zedd and Rita Ora.
The house was originally built for late aerial film operator Alan Purwin, who worked on the … [] “Transformers” films.
The home theater features tiered seating.
There are two guesthouses as well as a pool house on the grounds.

Arched Doorways Add Interest and Beauty
Straight lines versus curved lines. In a study published in PNAS, participants were more likely to label a room as “beautiful” when it had curves than when it only had straight lines. Straight lines certainly serve a purpose, but they can be formal and predictable. On the other hand, curves add a level of softness and interest. Arched doorways are one way to add soft curves and elegance to any space. Below, we’ve listed some of the ways to use arched doorways in your home.
Highlight entrances and corridors
Tumblr media

“When you are refurbishing a historic property, arched doorways are a welcome change and distinguish more important and grand entrances and corridors from mere utilitarian corridors,” says Michael Schienke, Director and Chartered Architect at VORBILD Architecture in London.  However, he doesn’t think this look would work in every type of design. “In new and modern properties, creating an arched doorway seems rather unnecessary,” Schienke explains.
“External double doors with arches in traditional properties enable more light to enter the building. Usually, you would have a fixed glazed panel there,” Schienke tells Freshome. And the type of repeating archway style shown above can help you create a grand entrance with your entryway.
Add a Mediterranean vibe

“Once a staple in older homes, arched doorways can help achieve various architectural styles and are essential for implementing Mediterranean design styles including Spanish-Style Villas, Spanish Colonials, Italian Renaissance, and Renaissance Revivals,” says John Lum of John Lum Architecture in San Francisco. Lum is the architect for the photo above. “And if you don’t have a particular design style, arched doorways will add an element of play to your desired look,” he says.
Provide contrast

Sometimes, arched doorways serve another design purpose. In the photo above, the curved archway serves to contrast the square design on the ceiling, columns, fireplace mantel and the room’s square furniture.

If you have a formal dining room and/or a formal living room, arched doorways can add to the elegant look you’re trying to achieve. In the photo above, the magnificent arched doorway contributes to the grandeur of the room. The archway also complements the architectural details on the columns, walls and windows.
Making your own archway
Tumblr media
Archways frame a room. Image: Fuse/Getty Images
“For the DIY-er who has moderate carpentry skills, changing from a rectangular door to an arched entryway is fairly straightforward,” Lum says. “Be aware that drawing out the arc takes some precision as you want the radius to be symmetrical throughout its span.”
However, once the archway is made, he says it’s simple to frame it out. “For homeowners working with a professional, be mindful of scale, proportion and function, as the arch may lower the entryway height by an inch or so,” Lum advises.
Tumblr media
Converted doorways. Image courtesy of CurveMaker Arch Kits.
You can also convert a square doorway to an archway with products like CurveMakers Arch Kits. In the photo above, several square doorways were converted into archways. The kits typically include two columns and one top header (you can choose between round or elliptical headers). Depending on your budget, you can choose between paint-grade MDF or solid poplar wood. Homeowners can also add architectural details with these types of archways since the columns include a plinth block, column casing and capital. You’ll need to measure your opening to ensure that you order the right size.
The directions in a nutshell: if you have any existing trim, remove it from the doorway. Using the arch template, cut your arch shape. Finally, install the prefab arch kit.

Top Residential Architectural Styles for Real Estate Professionals
When working with buyers, one of the first things you probably ask about is their wish list for a new home. You may talk about such things as layout, size and amenities. However, for some buyers, a specific architectural style is at the top of the list. In that case, a solid grasp of some basic architectural concepts and movements will be an important part of signing that client.
In addition, if you are listing a home of a specific style, you’ll want to understand the features that make it unique so that you can highlight them in your photographs, property description and brochure copywriting. Staging and home improvements for a unique style of property might also involve choosing fixtures, finishes and design elements specific to the particular home’s style.
What follows is an overview of some of the most common and widely available architectural styles you’ll encounter when working with clients.
Colonial
Dating from the 17th century, Colonial architecture is defined by symmetry, practicality, and a connection to local climate and readily available building materials. While we often think of the United States and Canada as British colonies, there were also Spanish, French and Dutch colonial powers in charge in various parts of the country, so Colonial architecture will differ depending on the region.
Colonial architecture generally features a steep, gabled roof and an interior layout that is one room deep and opens from a central entrance. Depending on the climate, Colonial homes may feature a single, central fireplace or a fireplace at either end of the home. Homes feature small, multi-paned windows symmetrically arranged on either side of the entrance.
Classical/Greek Revival
Inspired by the temples and public buildings of ancient Greece, Greek Revival was a movement in Europe and North America dating from the 19th century. Featuring an even number of grand columns with an entablature above, the style became popular due to the connection between North American democracy and that of ancient Greece.
Greek Revival homes are generally painted white in order to mimic the white marble of the originals. While the style is common in public buildings in many areas along the East Coast, many of the Greek Revival-style residences that survive are located in the Southeastern United States.
Victorian
Dating from the late 19th and early 20th century, Victorian architecture remains a beloved and popular style in many areas. With ornate trim, asymmetrical design elements, and, in some markets, unusually bright or pastel paint colors, Victorian design is considered a fun and often quirky style. The elaborate detail and often expensive custom finishes reflect the Gilded Age wealth of the era.
Part of the charm of many Victorian homes is their layout, consisting of a variety of nooks and crannies, small rooms, side porches, turrets and other interesting elements. However, for contemporary buyers used to open-concept floor plans, these can be seen as drawbacks. In addition, much of the hand-hewn custom woodwork in elaborate moldings, trims and mantels are costly to duplicate when making repairs or refurbishments. It is important to properly understand and appreciate these elements and their value when advising clients and determining value.
Tudor
Unique and romantic, Tudor architecture in North America originated in the mid-19th century and is easily identified by its dark wood beams set against a white backdrop, as well as brick or stonework foundations, chimneys and other architectural elements. Tudors can range from small, cottage-style homes to expansive and elaborate mansions. Windows are another distinctive feature of this style, usually small, multi-paned and either rectangular or diamond-shaped.
Because Tudor homes are expensive to build and maintain, they fell out of favor in new construction after the affordable housing boom of the post-World War II era, but they have never gone out of style. You’ll still find a Tudor dream home at the top of many buyers’ wish lists, and homeowners lucky enough to own their own will no doubt expect top dollar when it’s time to sell.
Craftsman
The Craftsman-style home is rooted in the early 20th century Arts and Crafts movement. With low-pitched gable roofs, generous porches with squat, square columns and prominent structural elements, the style was traditionally used for bungalows. Now, however, sprawling, newly-built mansions in the Craftsman style can be found in luxury neighborhoods all over the country.
Craftsman homes have a number of unique decorative elements, including square light fixtures in decorative metals like copper and bronze, double-hung windows with multiple panes in the top and a single pane in the lower half, and built-in cabinetry and other practical elements. In order to ensure long-term value, any improvements or renovations should be in keeping with the Craftsman aesthetic.
Ranch
Rambling 20th-century ranch-style homes are a fixture of neighborhoods all over the United States and Canada. Beginning on the West Coast, the style became popular in an era when large lots and suburban sprawl ruled the architectural world. They come in a variety of configurations, including L- and U-shapes which are often arranged around a central recreational space like a pool or terrace. In addition, open-concept floor plans are uniquely suited to the ranch-style home.
While some people love a second story, many others will be drawn to the style and simplicity of a ranch design. For older couples, the style offers the opportunity to stay put after retirement without worry about accessibility as they age. For families with young children, the lack of stairs can mean an easier and more worry-free lifestyle, and the location of many ranch-style homes in suburban neighborhoods is often desirable.
Mid-Century Modern
Mid-century modern is currently one of the most distinctive and highly sought-after styles of homes. Because they were generally produced from 1930-1960, these homes are somewhat rare and, therefore, more highly valued. Combining structural elements of the ranch-style suburban home of the post-War era with artistic and design flourishes impacted by the Modernist aesthetic, these homes are truly works of art.
Mid-century modern homes have a clean, minimalist aesthetic and often feature a neutral background with pops of color on doors, light fixtures, artwork or furnishings. They are often low-slung and built to be part of the landscape, with an emphasis on the connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces. The aesthetic also requires similarly minimalist furnishings, especially those specific to the time period, so keep this in mind when staging and showing these homes for maximum impact.
Contemporary
Introducing new materials and a new profile, contemporary architectural styles draw on the minimalist influences of the modern aesthetic using metal and glass to make the home feel connected to the outside world. Current contemporary homes often have an emphasis on green, sustainable design, building and operations.
Contemporary design is often seen as cold, especially with the emphasis on hard building elements. However, the most current contemporary designers favor the use of natural stone, wood, textiles and greenery to warm up the look and to seamlessly integrate indoors and out.
Remember, while the architectural styles listed above are fairly common throughout the United States and Canada, some coastal, historically significant and geographically isolated areas may have their own unique architectural styles and features. It’s worth familiarizing yourself with common styles in your area so that you can be as informed as possible when working with clients.
