Seville was the first stop on our trip to Spain and Italy. We stayed right in the downtown core in a lovely boutique hotel that served afternoon tea and a lovely buffet breakfast each morning.Back home, I have walked into so many homes where there is an elaborately ornate staircase design that often looks totally out of place. Now I know where the design was inspired. And it fits right in here. Along with the tile after one of my followers on Instagram noted “There’s no subway tile Maria”.So that’s what inspired this post. Which was easy to write because I took so many photos of all the tile work.I know many of you, who are longtime readers, might fall off your chair or drop your morning coffee but here is where decorative tile has a place:This was a doorway in the reception area of the hotel:Here’s the staircase (below):The first night, we had dinner in a nearby restaurant. I liked the way the muted red encaustic tile related to the bricks on the same wall (below):And it also worked well with the black and white tile floors:This was the backsplash tile in the breakfast room, back in the hotel (below):This was the floor in the Seville Cathedral nearby (below):Then we toured the Real Alcazar of Seville, castle and gardens. Gorgeous tiles everywhere (below):       When does this kind of tile work back home? In context with a Spanish/Mediterranean style home, with an exterior that possibly looks like this:Image sourceAn entry staircase with iron railings ornate or not (below):Centsational StyleWood beamed ceilings, ornate, spanish style pendants, black, arched windows, all belong in a house with this colourful tile (below):image sourceYou could also design a terra cotta floor with a turquoise kitchen (below):Image sourceIn this Spanish kitchen with the beams in the ceiling and curved plaster hood fan, I could even live with the blue backsplash because it’s been repeated in the plates and tile underneath the window.Image sourcePerhaps your styling might look like this with the Spanish style wall sconce as well:Image sourceIn a Spanish style home, your powder room could look like this (below). Notice the arched doorway and perfect light fixture.Image sourceI love this fireplace design (below). So classic and timeless. Again, notice the beams and the arched french doors. The beautiful outdoor fireplace too with the iron gate.image sourceIt’s rare that I think a black leather sofa looks good but here in this more neutral ‘Spanish inspired’ living room, it works. Because there’s not too much black to make it heavy and masculine (below):image sourceWhat I have seen all too often is people will go on a trip to Europe and fall in love with a particular style and when they get home they start adding these random design elements that in no way work with the existing style of their home. That’s where random arches that have no place suddenly appear, or the busy, ornate staircase railing I mentioned at the beginning of this post or random rows of tile on a staircase kick that in no way belongs.Decorative tile has a place. And that place is definitely not as a random strip in your kitchen backsplash or shower surround. At least if you’re going to introduce accent tile, go big or go home, (like the bathroom image above) but don’t just install bits and pieces of it. Decorative tile is like a strong wall colour. If you’ve decided to paint a room red, go for it, don’t just paint it on a single wall, that rarely works.Related post: A New Way to Design Accent Tile: Ceramic ArchitectureHere are a couple more images once we arrived in Barcelona: Here I am sitting outside at dinner in a Tapas restaurant in Seville:The sidewalks in Seville were mostly concrete in a hex shape! Isn’t that incredible? You can see it behind me too in the photo above.Hexagonal concrete tile in SevilleYou’ll notice white walls are big in Spanish design. If this is the stye of your home and you need to choose the right white, download my ebook,  White is Complicated; A Decorators Guide to Choosing the Right White, here. English pop megastar Louis Tomlinson is not only trying to keep songs from his unreleased debut solo album from being leaked online — fans shut down a Twitter account last week that attempted to leak a single — he’s getting serious about selling a sprawling compound tucked into the rugged mountains between Calabasas and Malibu, Calif., hacking an eye-catching $1 million dollars off the original price in one single swipe of the price chop machete. First listed more than a year ago with a great deal of publicity and a too confident asking price of nearly $14 million, the resort-style estate is now available for sale at just under $13 million as well as for rent at $40,000 per month.
Tomlinson, who returned last year as a judge to the original, U.K. version of “The X Factor,” the televised talent show from which he and his former One Direction band mates rocketed to international über-celebritydom in 2010, purchased the property in the fall of 2015 for exactly $10 million. Alas, the 27-year-old former boy bander soon caught a classic case of the Celebrity Real Estate Fickle and, after he shelled out $7.3 million in the fall of 2016 for a glammed up Spanish meets Georgian villa in a famously celeb-filled neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills, he put his semi-remote Calabasas compound up for sale in early 2018 and a couple of months later the property popped up for rent at $60,000 per month.
Sequestered near the end of a slender, tree-covered private lane, the gated driveway curves through a thicket of trees and over a stone pillared wooden bridge to a circular drive surrounded by rolling lawns in front of a sprawling, 9,659-square-foot Santa Barbara Spanish-style main residence. Marketing materials indicate there are a total of five bedrooms and eight bathrooms between the main house and the almost 4.75-acre compound’s handful of outbuildings that include a guardhouse, a detached garage, two guesthouses, a fitness pavilion and a Japanese-inspired tea house/meditation pavilion perched atop a serene knoll next to a koi pond.
Grandiosely proportioned interiors feature glossy polished walnut floorboards, flamboyantly high ceilings with alder wood ceiling beams and a whole-house audio system. A barrel-vaulted foyer passes between two stout columns before it steps down to a capacious formal living room that features a massive arched window and a humongous, tile-accented carved limestone fireplace. There is also a not particularly spacious formal dining room with fireplace, a dark-paneled, double-height library ringed by a second floor gallery and a high-end kitchen that features every culinary bell and whistle money can buy plus a unique fish tank built in to the custom cabinetry. A semi-circular separate breakfast room is lined with a trio of arched windows and a grandiose, double-height family room is overlooked by a wrought iron-railed catwalk while a state-of-the-art screening room offers a wide-screen projection system and a basement entertainment space contains a games room and a wine cellar.
Extensively landscaped and fastidiously maintained park-like grounds feature a rock-lined brook that weaves and waterfalls a serpentine path down landscaped hillsides and across rolling lawns shaded by mature trees. Al fresco lounging and dining terraces outside the main house includes a built-in barbecue area and, on a flat, sunny plateau above the house, extensive flagstone-cut limestone terracing surrounds a mosaic-tiled swimming pool and spa next to a fitness pavilion and guesthouse.
Newly signed with Arista and recently spotted in the U.K. where he’s rumored to be making a video for his upcoming album, the two-time Teen Choice Award winner also keeps a six-bedroom home in a semi-rural pocket about a dozen miles north of Central London in the Borough of Barnet he reportedly acquired in 2012 for about £2.25 million.

My husband and I had been planning to take the classic road trip along the Pacific Coast for a long time. We were waiting for the right time for this adventure and decided to make the most of our Thanksgiving week and venture to the West.
Regarded as not only one of the best road trips in the United States but also in the world, the coastal cruise down this major State Route is on many bucket lists. We were worried it might be too much for just 7 days to cover, but the trip went smoothly.
Below is my guide to explore the gorgeous miles of the iconic road with some essential stops along the way.
You can start this trip at either end. We flew from Boston, and our trip begin in the ultimate “City by the Bay,” San Francisco. Next we headed south to more beaches and breathtaking views in Carmel, Monterey.
Our longest drive of about 4.5 hours, was from breathtaking Monterey to elegant Santa Barbara, and it was absolutely worth it. Then we went further south to the bustle and excitement of Los Angeles, followed by San Diego, at the southern end of the state.
Our favorite by far were the less crowded and more scenic places like Carmel by the Sea and Santa Barbara. You can see the Spanish influence in the architecture; even their CVS Pharmacy looks like a beautiful Spanish villa from afar.
The weather is tropical and about the same all year long. North is cooler than the south, so as we drove down the coast, temperature rose drastically. Even in November, the week of Thanksgiving, it was blazing 90 degrees in LA and San Diego. I’m glad we had packed accordingly.
San Fransisco
San Francisco is a top holiday destination featuring scenic beauty and great ethnic and cultural diversity.
I went to San Fransisco, with flowers in my hair (or on my jacket), with many high expectations. It was just how I had imagined and better. Steep streets and colorful houses, among mountains and a deep blue sky. It feels much different than the East Coast.
Palace of Fine Arts Theatre
Our itinerary included the famous Cable Cars, Fisherman’s Wharf, and many other attractions. Day 1, we strolled through Golden Gate Park,  and then took a memorable ride with Cable Cars at night to avoid the crowds. On Day 2, we took a leisurely stroll along Fisherman’s Wharf, and finally the famous Lombard Street. We also saw the popular among tourists, the Painted Ladies and Mrs. Doubtfire’s house, that brought back many childhood memories.
Golden Gate
An other attraction I loved was the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. Built for the 1915, it was one of the only constructions kept intact after the world fair. You must visit this landmark to take in the elegant rotunda, the Greek-style colonnades, and the lagoon, where you can see a clear reflection of the building. Here you can relax in the company of swans and ducks and be surrounded by stunning homes around you. It is also steps away from a beautiful beach.
My absolute favorite part of our trip to San Fransisco was hiking up the hill to get a better view of the Golden Gate. The secret is to cross the bridge and head to the Vista Point. From there you take the steps, cross under the bridge and hike up a small hill and reach the perfect height for a great view of the City by the Bay.
Carmel by the Sea & Monterey
Our drive on Highway 1 from San Fransisco to Carmel was absolutely stunning. Carmel-by-the-Sea, often simply referred to as Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, founded in 1902.
We spent our day walking around the fairytale cottages and admiring the scenic beauty of Carmel.
The white sand beaches and the cottage like homes made it look like it was out of a storybook.
Fairytale Cottages in Carmel by the Sea
Carmel Beach
I made my husband promise me to buy us a home in Carmel after we retire. It’s so beautiful and peaceful. This was by far the best part of our trip.
After spending the day at the beach, we headed towards Monterey, where we stayed the night at Portola Hotel & Spa, which I would highly recommend. In Monterey, we saw the spots where my favorite HBO show Big Little Lies was shot.
The next morning we drove past the Big Sur, for some horseback riding on the beach. This was by far the best experience. Riding a horse by the ocean, under the blue skies, was dream like.
  Santa Barbara
Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara is a solid vacation destination with its wide beaches, renowned wineries, and some of California’s finest shopping and dining options.
Traveling by car from Carmel to Santa Barbara takes about 4.5 hours. We reached Santa Barbara at night and started off our visit by going to a great Spanish restaurant called Loquita. The next morning we toured the pleasant surroundings at Shoreline Park, and took in the waterfront at Stearns Wharf. Tall palm trees, gorgeous architecture and elegance is what Santa Barbara is all about. We enjoyed our short stay in this beautiful American Riviera.
Los Angeles
You can drive from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles in 2 hours.
This City of Angels is surrounded by mountain ranges, forests, valleys, beaches, and deserts, the metropolitan area of Los Angeles is home to over 17 million people.
We were upgraded to a Penthouse at the Andaz Hotel in West Hollywood, where we enjoyed the view and the hustle bustle of the city. If you love shopping as much as I do, take a drive down Rodeo Drive and it’ll feel like you’re in designer heaven. With the  Holiday decor, it was the perfect place to be.
The next morning we drove around the Sunset Boulevard and towards the Hollywood sign. We also went to see the popular Walk of Fame to conclude our stay in L.A.
San Diego
Our last stop was America’s Finest City, San Diego. You can drive from Los Angeles to San Diego in 2.5 hours.
Divided into neighborhoods with distinct characters and cultural heritages, San Diego sits just north of the Mexican border and offers visitors a blend of tourist attractions, including a lively nightlife, diverse cuisine, and a thriving musical scene.
Our itinerary included Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, and other attractions. Day 1, we enjoyed the sand and surf at La Jolla Cove, and soaked up the sun at 90 degrees at Balboa Park. We enjoyed delicious Persian cuisine at Bandar Restaurant in Gaslamp Quarter, and finally got a taste of local nightlife at Top of the Hyatt.
We had a great experience staying at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel. The Harbour view from our room was to die for.
Day 2 was a packed day of sightseeing: we admired nature’s creatures, like seals at the Wharf and took in the waterfront at the Seaport Village.
It was a record high of 92 degrees on our last day in California, and luckily it was also Black Friday. We spent the rest of the day, avoiding the heat, at the Fashion Valley mall. it is an upscale, beautiful open-air shopping mall in Mission Valley.
We have now checked off this road trip off our bucket list. √
Hope you found a few good trip ideas in my blog post for your next West Coast excursion.
Cheers!
7 Days – California dreamers, endless coastline & sunshine My husband and I had been planning to take the classic road trip along the Pacific Coast for a long time.

Vivid Entertainment’s Bill Asher dumps $14.5 million in Montecito
The Montecito/Santa Barbara area has recently seen a spate of mega-dollar real estate closings — property transfers for well into the eight figures, the latest of which went down last week. A gorgeous estate just north of the quaint downtown shops on Coast Village Road was quietly sold.
Christened El Cielito, the lavish compound was designed in 1920 by acclaimed architect George Washington Smith. The 3.28-acre property is quintessential Santa Barbara in style — Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, verdant lawns and lush foliage — and offers distant, super-narrow views of the deep blue Pacific. It’s barely even a peek-a-boo, but it’ll do. Hey, any ocean view is better than no ocean view.
Tumblr media
The main entrance to El Cielito. Fancy!
Unfortunately, Yolanda spent lots of time researching this place but was unable to turn up any interesting owner names from back in the day. We’re sure a knowledgable Montecito local will happily tell us how obtuse we are and inform y’all about who built this place. It must’ve been somebody important! But for now, the name(s) shall remain a mystery.
Anywho. We do know that the estate was purchased in late 1995 by Saturday Night Fever producer John Badham, who flipped it just two years later to President Trump’s BFF Tom Barrack — a private equity bigwig and CEO of Colony Capital. In 2014, Mr. Barrack quit-claimed the property to architectural designer Laurel Beebe Barrack, one of his three (or four?) ex-wives and mama of his son Nicholas.
But Ms. Beebe Barrack didn’t hold onto the spread for very long — she has other interesting projects in the works, we imagine. By late 2016, she had slapped a $20 million pricetag on the beast. After a change of realtors and several big pricechops, the ask eventually tumbled to $15.5 million. Records show the estate was finally sold in late February (2019) for a discounted $14,500,000.
Per records, the proud new owner is Vivid Entertainment co-owner Bill Asher, an Alaska native and current Montecito resident — he and wife Julia Asher (née Mavris) currently reside on a multi-acre estate nearby. That place, sadly, was seriously impacted by the major Montecito mudslides of 2018.
But we digress — more on the Ashers’ current spread a wee bit later. For now, we know some of y’all might be wondering how this couple can afford a $8.1 million Montecito estate and a second, even larger $14.5 million compound down the street. Well, if you don’t already know what Vivid Entertainment is, allow Yolanda to explain.
Vivid is arguably the most successful adult entertainment production juggernaut in the whole wide world. And adult entertainment, of course, is better-known as porn to all you uncouth hooligans. Or filthy smut, as your grandmother would say. Vivid’s productions feature all sorts of interesting “performers“.
Perhaps Vivid’s best-known “hallmark,” if you will, is its ownership of the most (in)famous celebrity sex tapes in history. Paris Hilton, Tila Tequila and Farrah Abraham all proved to be mega-successful Vivid video stars. And Kim Kardashian’s career-kickstarting video — appropriately titled “Kim Kardashian, Superstar,” reaped untold millions for Vivid and launched her krazy klan on their path to billionairedom. It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world! And we sure do love it.
Despite the raunchy products Mr. Asher peddles, he’s got admirably refined real estate taste — as you can tell from his swanky new Montecito pad. Yolanda would love to show y’all more of it, but unfortunately the property was yanked off the MLS just prior to closing. Still, you can find plenty of tantalizing photos here, here and here for your real estate porno enjoyment. We apologize for the inconvenience.
The irregularly-shaped flag lot is completely walled for security and features three gated access points, all of them camera-watched. The main entrance — located off the main boulevard out front — features an epic long driveway that passes between tall hedges before dead-ending at a party-sized motorcourt.
Just around the corner, on a narrower side street, are two additional gates — one providing direct access to the detached garage (for the homeowners) and a discreet service entrance meant for household staff, groundskeepers and other hired help/peasant folks.
As for the home’s renovated interiors, they are done up in a casually luxe, very contemporary sort of manner. Original details are virtually nonexistent, for better or worse. Ebonized hardwood floors flow throughout the main rooms, and the kitchen has beautiful tile of a dark henna color.
Six bedrooms and eight bathrooms are spread between the main house and one-bed guesthouse, which combined total nearly 9,800-square-feet of living space. The deluxe master suite includes his-and-hers bathrooms and dressing rooms/closets.
The entire 3+ acre lot is fully and breathtakingly landscaped with emerald-green lawns, at least four reflecting fountains/pools, a proper north/south tennis court and mature specimen trees.
Back in early 2017, as already mentioned, the Ashers forked out $8.1 million for an “European Country” manor in Montecito with a guesthouse, seven-car garage and nearly 12,000-square-feet of living space.
This property is located a wee bit north of their new estate — closer to the Santa Ynez mountains — and was unfortunately mud-flooded last year. We assume the Ashers will soon be lookin’ to unload the 3.5-acre spread, but it is not yet listed on the (open) market.
Back down in Los Angeles — where Vivid is headquartered — the Ashers long resided in a charming Colonial-style house in the hoity-toity Hancock Park neighborhood.
Tumblr media
Mr. Asher’s lovely (former) Hancock Park home
In October (2017), the Hancock Park residence was listed with a $5,750,000 asking price. Shortly thereafter — in December — the property was sold for $5.3 million to screenwriter Russell Gewirtz, best known for writing the screenplay for Spike Lee‘s Inside Man. The Ashers continue to maintain a more modest LA home in the Hollywood Hills.
And as for Mr. Barrack, he’s also been quite busy on the real estate front in recent years.
Tumblr media
Mr. Barrack’s former Santa Monica manse (sold for $30+ million)
Back in 2014, Mr. Barrack paid $24,500,000 for a brand-new Santa Monica behemoth with an indoor basketball court and other fancy gizmos. In 2017, the contemporary Colonial mega-manse (built by “starchitect” Richard Landry) was sold to entrepreneur Kirk Lazarus for a record-bruising $31+ million.
Mr. Barrack now resides in a $13 million contemporary casa above Brentwood’s Mandeville Canyon. And let’s not forget that he’s still attempting to unload Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch — now owned by his Colony Capital firm — for a newly-reduced $31 million.

Neutral Home Interior Ideas
Beautifully designed by two very talented interior designers, Mitzi Maynard and Clare Kennedy, this neutral home has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms (6 including pool house), and a total of 6,500 square feet.
The homeowners began building this neutral home in the fall of 2015, and it was completed in the Spring of 2017. This home combines a few different architectural styles. The exterior is a fresh take on a traditional home, which works well in their established neighborhood in Nashville. The interior of the home has a more Modern/Mediterranean style with a neutral color scheme that is easy on the eyes and soothing to the soul.

Boston Red Sox Star Hanley Ramírez Selling South Florida Home for $4M
Billie Weiss/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images
Red Sox first baseman Hanley Ramírez is taking a big swing at selling his Weston, FL, home for $4 million.
The Spanish-style abode sports eight bedrooms on one acre. The Dominican-born 34-year-old bought the 9,000-square-foot home when it was brand-new, in 2008. At the time, he was playing for the Florida Marlins, and he paid $3.95 million for the place, according to property records. If he sells for asking, he’ll break even.
But we’re in love with the place—we think the All-Star’s sunny home is a hit.

Located in the guard-gated Windmill Reserve community, the Santa Barbara-style home is the only one in the neighborhood of its design, and comes with a separate guest suite and multiple entertaining areas.
The open floor plan features a living room, dining room, and two fireplaces. French doors open to the back patio. The chef’s kitchen contains chiseled-edge French marble, and terra-cotta tiles decorate the kitchen ceiling. Other highlights include a billiard-room, office or playroom, and a plush home theater with a poker room. The master wing includes custom-designed oversized closets. Other details of the residence include exposed beam ceilings, custom-built arches, and Brazilian hardwood floors.
Outside sports a pool, gazebo, and patio spaces that look out to a private preserve.
“What stands out the most is the Spanish-style resort pool right in the home’s backyard. There’s nothing like it in this area, with its imported Spanish tiles and intricate design,” says listing agent Giselle Bonetti of Coldwell Banker. “The fountain in the front of the home has the same imported tiles, tying the home together beautifully.”
The MLB All-Star has decided to relocate, but leaves behind warm feelings for his Weston digs. “We are extremely grateful to what the city of Weston offered us during our stay there,” Ramírez said in a press statement. “We truly loved our time in this home. However, as our children grew, they wanted to explore other activities, which led us to relocate. I pray the next homeowners are as blessed and grateful as we were in this home.”
Ramírez broke into the big leagues with the Red Sox in 2005, before being traded to the Marlins. The 2006 Rookie of the Year starred for the Marlins for six years, then spent a little over two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers before returning to the Red Sox prior to the 2015 season.
