Heyo I'm Callie......Uh heck i have no clue how to begin oh gosh.. Well i suppose I'll start simply and go from there..! I am Calliope kin and I am looking for my Roxy and Jane! Simple description of myself in my canon: I was nb/trans and i often went by they and he. I wore the usual green suit and sometimes i wore a black sweater, that had my sign on it, with green suspenders and a green skirt (Only skirt I ever wore because I really liked it) and I was shorter than average. (I'm also currently 16) Now onto what I remember about Roxy and Jane! (Because I happen to remember what they look like to a certain degree!) Roxy: She was definitely taller than me, had messy blonde hair that she dyed light pink and she had blue eyes! She also liked to play video games and crocheted a scarf for me! Jane: She was around my height, had neatly kept black hair and had hazel eyes! She baked alot and always was really willing to cheer me and Roxy up with a good joke! One of my favorite memories with them was The Scarf! It was getting cold and all i really had to keep me warm was a was my sweater and i was often complaining about how cold it was. So one day, Roxy asks me "Hey, blue and pink or just green?" and I reply "Blue and pink!" She then smiles and whispers "..Got it right!.." and then pulls out this blue and pink crocheted scarf, hands it to me and says "Here you go!" and I'm like ":0!! Oh my gosh?! This is so nice? I love it thank you so much!" and I hug her and she smiles, saying "It was Janeys idea, you should thank her too!" And at that moment Jane walks into the room and I quickly walk over to her, hug her and thank her for the scarf. After all this, we all go get hot cocoa to warm up! For Black History Month, I want to share with you the work of three photographers that are very important and influential to me. Dawoud Bey’s work is semi-sacred to me. His was the first photographic work that I consciously knew was created by a black person and he also showed an unconditional dignity to his subjects. Whether his on location work or his studio work, I am constantly entranced by Dawoud’s ability to document black individuals and tell our stories through images. His 20x24 inch studio Polaroids from the 90s are amongst my favorite works of art of all time. Gordon Parks is another black man using the photographic medium that was highly influential on my development as a creative. Though his work is exquisite, the breadth of ways of creating that he executed on is what influenced me the most. Parks showed me that not only did you not have to stick to one form of photographic creation, but that you can execute across multiple mediums to tell the stories that you want to tell. He showed me that black men could be Renaissance men as well and that you did not need to deeply specialize to be successful as a creative. Carrie Mae Weems changed the entire way I looked at photography and the role of presentation in storytelling. Her use of various different means of presenting her work to communicate her ideas blew my mind. No longer did I think photographs were to only be matted, framed, and hung on a white cube wall. The Jefferson Suite had the largest impact with the images no longer being hung on walls but printed on muslin and draped from the ceiling to create an installation work instead of a simple wall based exhibition. Weems was also one of the first heroes of mine that I met in person and my signed copy of her book “Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video,” is still one of my most prized possessions. Olivier and Edo, 2016. This image was part of promo for an exhibition of work by these two great artists, @olivier_ and @legomyedo, that I co-curated. This exhibition was part of @amfmlife's Jazz Series. I am primarily a portraitist so it's usually just the subject and I as I try to capture them in a way that is truthful but there was a lot of collaboration in the creation of this image. Styling came from @rynalx and a special shout out to @__mckenzie__ and @maybesundaycollective for wardrobe. Big shout out to @mister.ms for providing a platform for everyone involved.
