The J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation is the vision and the support behind the IDAHO OUTDOOR FIELDHOUSE in Boise ID Veterans Day weekend saw the ribbon-cutting at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse (IOF) in Boise Idaho, along with the introduction of the companion Summit Hyperbarics and Wellness Center. For over a decade, Idaho has been served by exceptionally veteran-friendly HBOT centers in Sun Valley and Pocatello, along with the Healing Centers in Boise, Malad City, Twin Falls, and Burley. Hundreds of Veterans have been helped to heal their brain wounds in Idaho, including many of the leaders behind IOF. The vision of the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse is to provide opportunities to pursue well-being through outdoor activities and athletics, and to create collaborative experiences that strengthen a diverse community by supporting health, education, employment, and engagement in a uniquely inspirational setting. The focus is on challenged and adaptive athletes of all ages, veterans, and first responders, with outreach to the entire Idaho population. The Fieldhouse is supported by the JAKA Family Foundation, Mission43, and the Challenged Athletes Foundation - Idaho. This partnership has come together on a seven acre complex near to downtown Boise on the Boise River. Started in 1966, the Board of the JAKA Family Foundation is committed to making Idaho an exemplary model for innovative learning, a destination for accessible world-class recreation, and the most desirable state for life after the military. Mission43 provides servicemen, women, and military spouses opportunities to succeed in Idaho after the military through the pillars of EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT, and ENGAGEMENT. It is the mission of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) to provide opportunities and support to people with physical challenges, so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics. The Challenged Athletes Foundation and Mission43 believe that involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life. And now, with the installation of Summit Hyperbarics & Wellness, the combined history, focus, impetus, and Missions and Visions of the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse participants are joined with a world-class medical team practicing Hyperbaric Medicine. On This Day...

1775 – The Olive Branch Petition, adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 5, 1775, was signed by members of the Continental Congress. The petition was a final attempt to avoid a full-blown war between the Thirteen Colonies that the Congress represented, and Great Britain. The petition affirmed American loyalty to Great Britain and entreated the king to prevent further conflict. In August 1775 the colonies were formally declared to be in rebellion by the Proclamation of Rebellion, and the petition was rejected in fact, although not having been received by the king before declaring the Congress-supporting colonists traitors. 1776 – In Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell rings out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now known as Independence Hall), summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, by Colonel John Nixon. On July 4, the historic document was adopted by delegates to the Continental Congress meeting in the State House. However, the Liberty Bell, which bore the apt biblical quotation, “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land unto All the Inhabitants Thereof,” was not rung until the Declaration of Independence returned from the printer on July 8. In 1751, to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of Pennsylvania’s original constitution, the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly ordered the 2,000-pound copper and tin bell constructed. After being cracked during a test, and then recast twice, the bell was hung from the State House steeple in June 1753. Rung to call the Pennsylvania Assembly together and to summon people for special announcements and events, it was also rung on important occasions, such as when King George III ascended to the throne in 1761 and to call the people together to discuss Parliament’s controversial Stamp Act of 1765. With the outbreak of the American Revolution in April 1775, the bell was rung to announce the battles of Lexington and Concord. Its most famous tolling was on July 8, 1776, when it summoned Philadelphia citizens for the first reading of the Declaration of Independence. As the British advanced toward Philadelphia in the fall of 1777, the bell was removed from the city and hidden in Allentown to save it from being melted down by the British and used for cannons. After the British defeat in 1781, the bell was returned to Philadelphia, which was the nation’s capital from 1790 to 1800. In addition to marking important events, the bell tolled annually to celebrate George Washington’s birthday on February 22, and Independence Day on July 4. In 1839, the name “Liberty Bell” was first coined in a poem in an abolitionist pamphlet. The question of when the Liberty Bell acquired its famous fracture has been the subject of a good deal of historical dispute. In the most commonly accepted account, the bell suffered a major break while tolling for the funeral of the chief justice of the United States, John Marshall, in 1835, and in 1846 the crack expanded to its present size while in use to mark Washington’s birthday. After that date, it was regarded as unsuitable for ringing, but it was still ceremoniously tapped on occasion to commemorate important events. On June 6, 1944, when Allied forces invaded France, the sound of the bell’s dulled ring was broadcast by radio across the United States. In 1976, the Liberty Bell was moved to a new pavilion about 100 yards from Independence Hall in preparation for America’s bicentennial celebrations. 1778 – George Washington headquartered his Continental Army at West Point. 1918 – Ernest Hemingway is severely wounded while carrying a companion to safety on the Austro-Italian front during World War I. Hemingway, working as a Red Cross ambulance driver, was decorated for his heroism and sent home. Hemingway was born in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. Before joining the Red Cross, he worked as a reporter for the Kansas City Star. After the war, he married the wealthy Hadley Richardson. The couple moved to Paris, where they met other American expatriate writers, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, and Ezra Pound. With their help and encouragement, Hemingway published his first book of short stories, in the U.S. in 1925, followed by the well-received The Sun Also Rises in 1926. Hemingway would marry three more times, and his romantic and sporting epics would be followed almost as closely as his writing. During the 1930s and ’40s, the hard-drinking Hemingway lived in Key West and then in Cuba while continuing to travel widely. He wrote The Old Man and the Sea in 1952, his first major literary work in nearly a decade. The book won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. The same year, Hemingway was wounded in a plane crash, after which he became increasingly anxious and depressed. Like his father, he eventually committed suicide, shooting himself in 1961 in his home in Idaho. (Ernest Hemingway on crutches in 1918, outside the American Red Cross hospital in Milan. The protagonist in his World War I novel, A Farewell to Arms, is an American ambulance driver on the Italian front who was wounded in both legs.)  

1944 – The US 1st Army is reinforced with 2 divisions arriving from Britain. There is heavy fighting along the road from Carentan to Periers. 1947 – In New Mexico the Roswell Daily Record reported the military’s capture of a flying saucer. It became know as the Roswell Incident. Officials later called the debris a “harmless, high-altitude weather balloon. In 1994 the Air Force released a report saying the wreckage was part of a device used to spy on the Soviets. 1959 – Maj. Dale R. Ruis and Master Sgt. Chester M. Ovnand become the first Americans killed in the American phase of the Vietnam War when guerrillas strike a Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) compound in Bien Hoa, 20 miles northeast of Saigon. The group had arrived in South Vietnam on November 1, 1955, to provide military assistance. The organization consisted of U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps personnel who provided advice and assistance to the Ministry of Defense, Joint General Staff, corps and division commanders, training centers, and province and district headquarters. 1960 – The Soviet Union charged Francis Gary Powers, whose U-2 spy plane was shot down over the country, with espionage. 1999 – An Air Force cargo jet took off from Seattle on a dangerous mission to Antarctica to drop medicine for Dr. Jerri Nielsen, a physician at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Research Center who had discovered a lump in her breast. SHEA, RICHARD T., JR. Rank and organization: First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, Company A 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Sokkogae, Korea, 6 to 8 July 1953. Entered service at: Portsmouth, Va. Born: 3 January 1927, Portsmouth, Va. G.O. No.: 38, 8 June 1955. Citation: 1st Lt. Shea, executive officer, Company A, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and indomitable courage above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. On the night of 6 July, he was supervising the reinforcement of defensive positions when the enemy attacked with great numerical superiority. Voluntarily proceeding to the area most threatened, he organized and led a counterattack and, in the bitter fighting which ensued, closed with and killed 2 hostile soldiers with his trench knife. Calmly moving among the men, checking positions, steadying and urging the troops to hold firm, he fought side by side with them throughout the night. Despite heavy losses, the hostile force pressed the assault with determination, and at dawn made an all-out attempt to overrun friendly elements. Charging forward to meet the challenge, 1st Lt. Shea and his gallant men drove back the hostile troops. Elements of Company G joined the defense on the afternoon of 7 July, having lost key personnel through casualties. Immediately integrating these troops into his unit, 1st Lt. Shea rallied a group of 20 men and again charged the enemy. Although wounded in this action, he refused evacuation and continued to lead the counterattack. When the assaulting element was pinned down by heavy machine gun fire, he personally rushed the emplacement and, firing his carbine and lobbing grenades with deadly accuracy, neutralized the weapon and killed 3 of the enemy. With forceful leadership and by his heroic example, 1st Lt. Shea coordinated and directed a holding action throughout the night and the following morning. On 8 July, the enemy attacked again. Despite additional wounds, he launched a determined counterattack and was last seen in close hand-to-hand combat with the enemy. 1st Lt. Shea’s inspirational leadership and unflinching courage set an illustrious example of valor to the men of his regiment, reflecting lasting glory upon himself and upholding the noble traditions of the military service.

Road Trip: Oh, the Places You’ll Go

On our 10,000-mile road trip, we saw dozens of sights and stopped in more than 30 states. Along the way, we marked our route and several stops on a fold-out paper map, above. Here’s a list of almost everything...

Lolo Pass, Idaho: historical site in the Bitterroot Mountains where Lewis and Clark passed during their explorations.

Berkeley Pit Mine, Berkeley, Montana: one of the largest and most expensive Superfund pollution sites in America.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming: Mammoth Hot Springs, Old Faithful, wild bison, and more at America’s first national park.

Medicine Wheel, Big Horn National Forest, Wyoming: a Native American religious site, thousands of years old and still used today.

Crazy Horse Memorial, Crazy Horse, South Dakota: still carving a mountain into the likeness of the famous warrior.

Ken’s Minerals & Trading Post, Custer, South Dakota: a nice rock shop where we probably bought too much.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Keystone, South Dakota: four stony-faced presidents carved into a mountain.

Wall Drug Store, Wall, South Dakota: famous for its free ice water and legions of billboards.

Cady Cheese, Wilson, Wisconsin: yummy cheese made here (and, in our case, consumed here).

Chicago, Illinois: the Sears/Willis Tower, Lake Michigan, Cloud Gate, Buckingham Fountains, Chicago-style pizza, elevated trains, and more.

Grand Rapids, Michigan: to visit relatives.

Flint, Michigan: site of a serious water crisis that symbolizes all kinds of issues around government, racism, and economics.

Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, Michigan: highlights all kinds of positive Ford achievements, and included a tour of the nearby Rouge plant that produces F-150 trucks.

Cudell Recreation Center, Cleveland, Ohio: site where Tamir Rice, a black child, was murdered by a white cop a few years ago; a memorable example in the debates around police brutality.

Presque Isle State Park, Erie, Pennsylvania: beautiful beaches overlooking Lake Erie.

Niagara Falls, New York: amazing waterfall experiences at America’s first state park.

Schenectady, New York: to visit relatives.

Hogback Mountain, Vermont: saw the so-called “100 mile view”.

Maine: from Portland’s Commercial and Exchange Streets, to whale watching in Boothbay Harbor, to beaches, to all kinds of seafood… and side trips to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and more. Saw a lot of relatives too.

Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Springfield, Massachusetts: honoring the masters of the game at its birthplace.

Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut: we drove through the campus, so the kids can now say they went to Yale.

Jersey City, New Jersey: to visit relatives.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: climbing the “Rocky Steps” and enjoying genuine Philly Cheesesteak.

Washington, DC: the White House; monuments to Lincoln and Washington; memorials for World War II and Vietnam; the Holocaust Museum; the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum; the Museum of the Bible; the U.S. Capitol; and more.

Rotunda, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia: Thomas Jefferson’s historic building at the university he founded.

Claudia Sanders Dinner House, Shelbyville, Kentucky: the original KFC.

Farmington Historic Plantation, Louisville, Kentucky: owned by the Speed family, who had ties to Lincoln, Jefferson, and Washington.

Kentucky Derby Museum, Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky: learning about the legends of the sport, as well as the money.

Gateway Arch, St. Louis, Missouri: as seen from the Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park, East St. Louis, Illinois.

Pappy’s Smokehouse, St. Louis, Missouri: considered by some to be the best BBQ ribs in the country.

Percival, Iowa: a farm community representative of flooding that has plagued the Midwest this year.

Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, Omaha, Nebraska: the world’s biggest zoo did not disappoint.

World’s Largest Ball of Twine, Cawker City, Kansas: yep.

Pike’s Peak, Cascade, Colorado: one of the most famous mountains in America, and at 14,000+ feet, the highest we’ve ever been outside of an airplane.

Mesa Verde National Park, Mesa Verde, Colorado: amazing cliffside homes built almost a thousand years ago by Native Americans.

Four Corners Monument, Teec Nos Pos, Arizona: where you can stand (or sit, or bounce a ball) in four states at once.

Arches National Park, Moab, Utah: beautiful, alien rock formations.

Moab Isolation Center Ruins, Moab, Utah: site of a Japanese internment concentration camp during World War II.

Dinosaur Quarry Visitor Center, Jensen, Utah: seeing and touching the fossils of giant dinosaurs, still embedded in the ground.

Temple Square, Salt Lake City, Utah: Mormon HQ.

Great Salt Lake State Park, Magna, Utah: the city’s namesake, and some of the saltiest water on earth.

ATK Rocket Garden, Northrop Grumman, Corinne, Utah: examples of various rockets and missiles, including Space Shuttle booster engine parts.

As I emphasized to the kids over and over, we are only seeing a glimpse of everything. We could spend a week or more visiting many of these places.

We didn’t go to North Dakota, choosing South Dakota instead for our eastbound trip.  And we didn’t realize it until it was too late, but we completely forgot about visiting Rhode Island. Sorry, Rhode Islanders!  Ironically, it is the only state that actually has the sound of “road” in its name.

Of course, as I asked in one of the FAQs... Does It Really Count As “Visiting” A State If You Only Drive Through A Little Piece Of It?

Downtown Meridian is my favorite. Many people like me love Meridian, ID, because of the beautiful neighborhoods. Each has a sports vibe and a great personality. Roaring Springs Water Park, which hosts various cultural events throughout the year, is within walking distance. I notice the lack of parking and heavy traffic sometimes, but I love other beautiful things about this place. The place comprises waterfront estates, golf course villas, townhomes, single-family homes, condos, and apartments. Most families consider this location because of so many reasons. Among the reasons include safety, high-quality education, and many fun events to enjoy, so happiness is overload. So no wonder why Meridian is well known.

‘Lifestyle-focused’ co-working and short-term office rental space set for Meridian

Kiln, a “lifestyle-focused” coworking space with locations in Utah and Colorado, will open in the mixed-use development along I-84 and Eagle Rd. Kiln will take over a 50,000 square foot space on the top two floors of the building. CEO Arian Lewis, said Kiln provides “amenity-rich” workspaces that are different from traditional shared office and coworking space. The workspace will have areas for individuals and teams of up to 50 people to work on projects.  Read more here...

I have read from the news that another tenant of Eagle View Landing in Meridian has been announced. Kiln, a "lifestyle-focused" co-working space with locations in Colorado and Utah, will open in the mixed-use development along I-84 and Eagle Road. The Kiln will take over a 50,000 square foot space on the top two floors of the building. According to CEO Arian Lewis, Kiln offers "amenity-rich" workspaces different from traditional shared office and co-working space. The workspace will have places for individuals and teams of up to 50 people to work on projects. Lewis stated what makes Kiln unique is the amenities. Those working in the Meridan location would have access to cycling, massage chair and refresh rooms, treadmill desks, a fitness studio, and food and beverages that are served daily.

Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) in cats is serious. Casey, my 4-year-old orange tabby, sports a sleek coat, always aces his annual wellness exams and regularly made healthy deposits in his litter boxes — until one Sunday night.

I noticed he was taking a long time standing in the litter box. Then I heard his moan-filled cry as he squatted briefly before springing out of the litter box. I inspected to find a tiny circle of urine with blood.

As a master certified pet first-aid instructor, I knew this was a medical emergency. I placed Casey in his travel carrier, gathered the urine sample in a bag and took him to Hillside Veterinary Clinic, a 24/7 animal emergency center in Dallas.

The veterinarians were able to quickly unblock his urethra to allow the remaining backed-up urine to spill onto the steel examination table. As a precaution, they kept Casey overnight to monitor him and perform further tests.

As I handed Casey to the veterinarian for his overnight stay, I will never forget what she said to me: “I am so glad you brought Casey in immediately. If you would have waited until the morning to bring him in, Casey may have died.”

All cats can be at risk for urinary stones or crystals, blockages, infections and a host of other issues. Plumbing problems like feline lower urinary tract disease, especially in male cats, come in many forms and can strike quickly.

“When a cat has a urinary obstruction, it is a true medical emergency,” says Lisa Lippman, DVM, a house call veterinarian in New York City with experience working at an emergency veterinary clinic. “When a cat can’t urinate, toxins build up in the blood and the condition can cause life-threatening organ failures, including to the heart.”

What are the signs of feline lower urinary tract disease or FLUTD?

Crying while urinating

Excessive grooming of the genitals

Bypassing the litter box to urinate elsewhere

Having difficulty urinating

Seeing blood in your cat’s urine

Any and all of these signs can indicate a blockage in the urethra, the development of urinary or bladder stones, stress-induced urinary tract infection, bladder wall inflammation or a host of conditions that fall under the blanket term known as feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD).

How to treat feline lower urinary tract disease or FLUTD

Depending on the issue, your veterinarian will perform a thorough exam that often includes taking blood and urine samples and performing an ultrasound. Your veterinarian may prescribe medications to relax muscles, reduce stress or fight infections in your cat and, in some cases, surgery may be required. “We often use an ultrasound to look at the bladder wall surface for evidence of stones or crystals,” says Hazel Carney, DVM, MS, DABVP, a board-certified veterinary practitioner at WestVet in Garden City, Idaho, who serves as chair of the American Association of Feline Practitioners Guidelines Committee. “And we do abdominal radiographs and analyze the urine for the concentration, the pH (acid base level), whether there are intact red blood cells, any signs of sugar glucose in the urine and any indication of infection.”

Cats recovering from feline lower urinary tract disease, including Casey, are then often switched to therapeutic diets made by major pet food companies, such as Hill’s, Purina and Royal Canin, to reduce the chance for another urinary issue.

Your veterinarian may also recommend adding key supplements to your cat’s diet. Popular go-to choices include Zylkene and Cosequin. Zylkene, a stress-reducing supplement, is made from casein, a milk protein with calming properties. Cosequin is a natural supplement used to help cats address bladder and joint issues. It comes in capsule form to sprinkle on a cat’s food or as a chewable treat.

How to prevent feline lower urinary tract disease or FLUTD

While not all feline lower urinary tract disease cannot be prevented, you can play a vital role in your cat’s health and survival. That starts by paying attention to your cat’s bathroom habits. Know what is normal for your cat in terms of frequency and size of the deposits in the litter box. And, strive to increase your cat’s water consumption to prevent dehydration that can exacerbate urinary issues. Dr. Carney says many studies suggest that offering canned food might decrease the recurrence of urinary diseases.

“But if your cat does not like canned food, you need to have multiple water bowls in your home away from their food bowls,” she says. “Why? Because cats do not naturally eat and drink in the same location. If they stay in one location too long, their sense of vulnerability (to perceived predators) increases.”

You can also take these effective preventive measures against feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD):

Provide one more litter box in your home than the number of cats you have. Intentionally place each litter box in different locations, not lined up in a row, to prevent stress-induced issues triggered by one cat bullying another who needs to urinate.

Keep the litter boxes clean by scooping daily. Cats possess heightened senses of smell and may seek a different bathroom location (like your bed or living room rug) if they deem their litter boxes to be too dirty to use. “It is a myth that cats do things out of spite, like urinating outside the litter box,” says Stephanie Karpf, DVM, who co-owns For Cats Only, a feline-exclusive veterinary practice in West Palm Beach, Florida. “I tell my clients the importance of having plenty of litter boxes in different locations that are scooped daily for the health sake of their cats.”

Enrich your indoor cat’s environment with cat trees, interactive toys and bedding in safe, elevated areas to reduce the risk of stress that can take a toll on a cat’s body. Dr. Carney’s parting message: “Any cat who goes into the litter box, postures to urinate and does not produce any urine or just small drops of urine needs to be seen immediately by a veterinarian. This is a serious medical emergency.”

YES, female cats get urinary issues, too!

In most cases, a cat most at risk for feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) tends to be an indoor-living male, young to middle-aged, who generally eats dry food and is overweight. However, female cats can also cope with plumbing problems. “Females more often present for feline interstitial cystitis (FIC) and, to a lesser degree than males, urinary tract infections,” says Hazel Carney, DVM, MS, DABVP, a board-certified veterinary practitioner who has focused on feline medicine and behavior for three decades and practices in Garden City, Idaho.

Because a female cat’s urethra is shorter and wider than a male’s urethra, urinary tract blockages are not as common — but they do occur and go unnoticed more by owners.

“The problem is that owners wait longer to bring in a female cat who is going back and forth to the litter box than they will for a male cat,” Dr. Carney says. “Some female cats may not pass blood, but have pain twinges and not cry out as a male cat would who has an obstruction. Owners may notice a cat is overgrooming her tummy, but fail to realize that could be an indication of bladder pain that needs veterinary attention to determine if it is due to stress, a skin disease or a urinary issue.”

Hands down, the biggest reason people hire a personal trainer is that they want to be stronger and healthier. To achieve that goal, throughout a lifetime, it is essential that we maintain a vigorous level of physical activity to not only age well and be healthy, but also to keep our bones strong.

Lifting weights, or resistance training, is the key to retaining lean muscle mass and keeping your weight down. Around the time you turn 30, you start to lose as much as 3% to 5% of muscle mass per decade. The rate of decline of an inactive 80-year-old could be as much as 30%.

In fact, the American College of Sports Medicine and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend two or more days per week of moderate-to high-intensity resistance training, using all major muscle groups. Use it or lose is correct, as keeping your muscles strong and flexible after 30 prevents scarpenia, a condition characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. Scarpenia is a natural part of aging, but muscle loss is largely accelerated by inactivity. For many, as we get older, we tend to move less.

The ACSM’s Physical Activity & Bone Health position stand is a recommendation that adults maintain a relatively high level of weight-bearing physical activity, with no upper age limit.
