The Royal Family of Winnipeg - aka the Royal Family of Disaster Lesbians

Duchess Rachel Scieszka

“Give me those earrings, Rachel.” 

The famous “R” from the book series. 

Recruited into VFD when she was quite young and became fast friends with Lemony Snicket and Beatrice Baudelaire. She also had a friendly relationship with Olaf, where they pretended to hate each other as their way of expressing affection. 

Incredibly into Astronomy, especially Meteorology. It’s her special interest, and her star charts are actually quite easy to hide codes in for the wary eye. 

Figured out she was a lesbian when she was quite young- 13 or 14. Was really stressed about it because while VFD is surprisingly accepting (don’t care who you like so long as you get the job done), her parents were quite old-fashioned. 

She became the duchess very young, too- quite soon after graduation, as her mother was killed in a car accident. Her father had died earlier of lung cancer. 

Rachel is actually quite good at running Winnipeg, as she’s very good at strategy and politics- she’s also quite good at slipping in favors for her beloved VFD, such as hiding a spy, distracting an enemy, or slipping a note from one guest to another. She also was very close with her daughters, and with the friends who managed to keep in contact, and invites everyone to masked balls quite often. 

Her mansion caught fire around the time of The Austere Academy, though she escaped. 

Between The Ersatz Elevator and The Slippery Slope, the home she was currently staying in was found burnt to the ground, and she was presumed dead. However, it’s uncertain if this is truly the case... 

Lady Duchess Jacquelyn Scieszka

Was adopted when Rachel was quite young, actually, but R couldn’t stand to leave her in the orphanage any longer than necessary. 

Jacquelyn lived with her birth parents until she was three, and she only has very foggy memories- a cramped house, angry shouts, bad smells. R eventually told her that she’d been taken away to the orphanage because her parents were abusive. 

Jacquelyn was recruited when she was nine, but due to being the child of the Duchess of Winnipeg, she had some perks that other recruits did not, such as visits home. 

When Jacquelyn was 15, she asked Rachel why she’d adopted her, expecting her to say that the young Jacquelyn had been curious, or interested in reading, or showed potential for VFD. She was pleasantly surprised by the actual answer. 

Rachel had visited the orphanage for a normal public service- going to the orphanage and spending a day with the kids, reading or doing crafts and encouraging them. When she’d entered the room for the smaller children, Jacquelyn was the only one unafraid of the stranger, and she immediately toddled over to her, throwing her arms up so she could be held and asking for bubbles. 

For the rest of the day, Jacquelyn had been very attached to R, and when she sat down to read, Jacquelyn plopped in her lap and fell asleep. After that, R decided that she had to adopt this child now. 

Was a Snow Scout for a year or two pre-recruitment. Nothing really notable happened while she was there but she enjoyed the camping aspect. 

Most of her volunteer work was in Winnipeg until she became Poe’s secretary to keep an eye on the orphan management. She’s just as good at politics as the rest of her family, but she’s less interested in that than they are and more interesting in her VFD work. 

She was devastated when she received news that her mother had perished in a terrible fire, and even more when she returned to Winnipeg and found out that her little sister was on a Snow Scout trip and had not received the news. 

She was trying to figure out how to break it to Maya until she received news of the kidnapping, and then she was terrified. Whenever she wasn’t in political meetings or preparations, she was contacting VFD to try and get someone to rescue her sister. 

Lady Maya Sciescka

“I heard that it’s a metaphor for death!”

Her birth parents, citizens of Winnipeg, mysteriously died in a fire when she was barely a few months old. Rachel was part of the volunteer group who put out the fire and managed to rescue her, and by the time they found out Maya had no biological family to go to, Rachel had gotten very attached. 

Since Maya is so much younger than her older sister, at first Jacquelyn didn’t have much attachment to her; she only visited home occasionally, anyway, she was an adult with a life and a job. But one day Jacquelyn came home and Maya- who was three or four at the time- immediately saw her, dropped her toys, and raced over, grabbing onto her legs for a hug and screaming that her big sister is home! And from that moment on Jacquelyn was like “okay. Okay so she’s my sister now, I will die for her, got it.” 

like Mother like Daughter, I guess.

Maya wasn’t recruited into VFD mainly because 1) they already had a member of the Winnipeg family (and the actual heir) and they didn’t need a spare because Jacquelyn was good at her job, 2) They honestly were running pretty low on resources and Maya was way too wild for them to try to handle. They told R to make sure her education was kept up and they’d recruit her when they could, and R was just fine with this decision because it meant she could spend more time with her daughter. 

is Jacquelyn a little jealous of this? Maybe, but she actually loves being in VFD and doesn’t blame Rachel or Maya for this so it doesn’t affect much.

Incredibly into the political side of being a monarch- she and her Mother can talk politics all day, and she tries to keep up with foreign relations and, most importantly, current issues within the Kingdom so she can brainstorm ways to fix them. She really wants her country to be prosperous and happy, and she always tries to look out for what could help the citizens. R is super proud of her for this. 

Actually has some serious social anxiety, though, and though she can talk really well when she’s with her family or close friends, when she’s around people she gets really nervous and can only get a few words out before she has to sit down. R was working on getting her medication and/or therapy before the Snow Scout Incident. 

It was family tradition to join the Snow Scouts at some point so Maya was pretty excited to do so and talked about their False Spring trip for weeks on end. She was chosen to carry the springpole and was so honored. 

She wasn’t super close with the Snow Scouts pre-kidnapping, though she got along great with Stephen and Chloe, but after the kidnapping they all became inseparable. 

While Jacquelyn became duchess, Maya was in an underwater submarine overcoming her anxiety to lead a revolt and figure out how to pilot this damn thing.

BAD DOG - ENVIRONMENT

BARN

The old barn where Duke would host organized dogfights. It was rotting when Maggie was 10, god knows how it’s still standing. Lit only by lanterns and sun or moonlight. The plywood fighting pit is stained with blood.

DIVE BAR

The bar where Maggie works. Shady, slimy, smelly. Low-lit, lots of LED lights, seen through a sheen of cigarette smoke. Often overcrowded with intoxicated men.

ROADSIDE

Seen both at night and during the day, this is the road that Maggie takes to walk back and forth from work and home. Cracked, uneven, and unkempt residential roads and sidewalks (if there are even sidewalks at all.) Lit only by streetlights.

MAGGIE’S BATHROOM

A small, outdated apartment bathroom. Lived-in, messy, kind of dirty. Beauty products are left laying out on the sink, but Maggie never has enough time to put stuff away before or after work. Evidence of mold in the tiles. Fluorescent lighting.

SCHOOL PLAYGROUND

Playground at a school in a low-income neighborhood. Not remembered fondly.

DUKE’S BACKYARD

Large, fenced-in backyard. Dogs tied up with heavy chains, small doghouses, barrels, springpoles, and just plain junk is strewn about the property. Simultaneously overgrown and barren of plants.

YOUNG MAGGIE’S BEDROOM

A cozy little girl’s room from the early 2000′s. It was never really well-decorated or clean, but it was certainly lived-in. This bedroom was where Maggie spent most of her time as a child. There’s a hole or two in the wall barely covered up with a princess poster.

our players start character creation. low-level (maybe lvl 4 or 5. Maybe.) they can have a variety of backgrounds and classes, but one restriction is that each must know of at least one of the other players.

post-apoc vibes, think horizon zero dawn, or the wheel of time, or maybe the witcher (given my own headcanons, idk whats actually canon in witcher i just like the games bruh)

starting scene has all the players gathered at a festival. small village vibes. Races are decently integrated with some exceptions. Is a northern area, but not too far north. So snow exists, and its like. Considerable, but no permafrost. Spring festival for breaking of winter seems a good idea.

Maypole-reminiscent things happen. A textured metal pole stands proud in the square, the top blossoming and splintering outwards - the protrusions being what the ribbons are tied to.

small bottles of “wink” (a magical drug - similar effect to salvia) are consumed by young adults, older adults watching amusedly while consuming alcohol or smoking various plants out of assorted pipes.

children typically coallesce outside the gates of the village in a meadow playing games and doing other children things

children reaching teen years are individually blessed by the village's medicine-woman at sundown, when festivities begin.

the young couple who the village council deem the least fortunate of the winter become central to the maypole (referred to as a springpole henceforth, may is not a month anymore.) younger individuals are given less complicated braids to weave, older ones are given more complex ones. Maypole dance is a solid half hour, couple is braided to the pole at the end.

for the ensuing half hour, after the braid is complete, the couple is stuck braided together as the villagers bring excess they have to ease the couple's passage into the spring and summer.

song and dance continues through the night. Communal fires and cooking is present. Older adults wifh children typically take them to their beds and retire themselves, young adults celebrate around larger fires, older individuals typically entertain a few older children with tales or each other with coversation.

party is given this setting in which to meet each other at a fire at the tail end of celebration, all having had experienced the festival.

the night grows later before outside the front gates a sharp crack sounds, as if a tree branch had broken, only louder and faster. it's followed by a scream, a second crack, and silence. the fire the party sits around is furtger removed from the ongoing music so it's unclear whether the remnants of the celebration heard the rapport, but what is clear is that nobody is moving to investigate.

At the gate, two bodies will eventually be found. If not by the party, then by hunters leaving in the morning. (is actively like 4am, no one heard from the square). One is female and kind of hidden, tucked behind a tree, and the other is male and in the middle of the road in a pool of blood. (fresh if party, dry if hunters.) both have holes in their heads, feel free to be gory.

Nobody knows what kind of weapon or thing might have done this, players (not pcs, the players themselves) might assume it to be a small-caliber gun. If someone rolls insight well, say it looks like the aftermath of some kind of projectile launcher. (like really high roll. we're talking dc 25 or roll a nat 20 here.) (yeah post apoc world, guns were thing before, but haha not anymore, were generally lost tech due to reasons.)

im not planning for this to be hard to find out. npc man had disagreement w woman ab smth, got heated, he pulled out gun and shot her (where he get it??), her brother came out, screamed as body was being hidden, gets shot too, npc flees.

party can realistically:

- track man through foliage (ran fhrough woods on his way home instead of taking paths so he wouldnt be spotted)

- talk to villagers who saw their disagreement and get directions to man's house

- not engage

IF THEY DONT ENGAGE:

cut to boss fight except in village and w 10 more hostile raiders and 10 allies a day later. (or party can explore and stumble across them too, just w/o allies)

IF THEY DO ENGAGE

man is missing when they get to his house, signs of a scuffle. a severe one. you can tell it was severe cause a severed hand lies in the middle of the floor, crushed around the handle of a very old pistol (remember, players know, characters do Not know, what a pistol is) in equally crushed and unusable disrepair. it points towards the door, which was very obviously broken free of its hinges. high insight shows that it looks like a hoof crushed the hand and the pistol.

high investigation finds a lockbox in which resides a few hundred rings (currency) (savings, from the look of it) and a notebook filled with ramblings and ravings of some antler-adorned beast eyeing him, following him, ever since he'd been visited by the men from the south who'd exposed the tribe's horrors and given him the gun should he need to use it. (first book) a second, slightly nicer book is under it, its even moreso filled with mad ravings indicative that he was out of it, theyre laced with desires to kill the old medicine woman, to burn her crops, to trample her gardens, burn her house to purge the village of her evil. the last entries are of his dreams of her eating children, worshipping an old-world demon bathed in fire, and the journal ends with his desire to shoot her. a case of ammunition can be found behind the house alomg w a makeshift shooting range. nothing to say who taught him how the gun works, though.

good tracking can lead the party to the horned one. the horned one (think leshy) explains the valley is his home, he is a relict of the old world, and wishes to protect his residence, as moving beyond the valley proves dangerous in old age. good conversation leads to an admission of killing the man, bad conversation leads the horned one wanting the party gone, and if they dont leave it becomes violent. either conversation should bring up the southerners and their “guns” (explains guns to the party if requested) and the danger they pose. How they grow bolder in their advances into the nortg, how he doesnt think they can kill him but doesnt want to risk it, and wants to hold them at bay as long as possible.

the horned one, if conversation is resolved peacefully, requests the party to deal with the invaders. if it's resolved hostilely without conflict, they are instructed to leave by him telling them to get out of his hair and kill the invaders already, and if the party will not he will consider them as much a threat to his well being as the invaders. in either “go do this”, he gives them a gilded compass that points to the raiders' camp.

leshy boss fight is not the intended ending but is a possible one.

raider boss fight is intended ending. Some guns involved, but theyre either a) old and break with a few shots, or b) are new and crappily made and break with a few shots. Emphasize the fact that stealth is imperative with the mission, and taking people out unnoticed would be the preferable method of going about business.

prob have 10 raiders, maybe 3 or 4 w guns, boss has heavy gun (innaccurate but lotsa shots)

aight cool now later today i get to fill in all the erroneous details and draw maps and make npcs! so stoked.
