Pardon me I'm just obsessed that the chair Fritz died in has its own article and multiple photos, who is this content for? (me)

Hi, a friend of mine in uni is thinking of getting into the topic of queerness in modern royal families, you got any good recs and sources about Fritz in particular?
Thanks
Hi there!
For biographies that sum up some of his presumably queer relationships I can offer the ones by Burgdorf and Blanning with the latter being far better to work with on a university level and the former giving a clearer list of the possible partners. However, Burgdorf is a little iffy source wise because it's a very commercial and short biography without footnotes, sooo grain of salt.
A classic from 2012 is the article by Reinhard Alings entitled "Don't ask, don't tell - War Friedrich der Große schwul?" which was originally published with the Friederisiko exhibition catalogue and can be viewed here on the website of the SPSG. Then there's two articles about him and his court in "Homosexualität am Hof. Praktiken und Diskurse vom Mittelalter bis heute", published by Domeier and Mühling, which also has other interesting articles. The latter is pretty new, so your friend could probably use it for source mining and go from there.
I would say that when talking about Fritz's queerness it is also worth looking into his brother Henry's queerness. There's a biography about him, "Prinz Heinrich von Preußen" by Eva Ziebura, and an exhibition catalogue entitled "Prinz Heinrich von Preussen. Ein Europäer in Rheinsberg". And for petty gay drama and yearning I recommend "Die Tagebücher des Grafen Lehndorf" because Lehndorf is hilarious to read and very in love with Henry.
I am answering this on my phone while doing other things, so if any of the usual people of this niche have more to add, please feel free to do so!
Frohes Schaffen! :D

Some Prussian Glory to gild your weekend :)
This sculptural bust of Prussia’s Crown Princess Luise by the artist Gottfried Schadow. A fashion queen, working mother, and even the Queen of Hearts? Perhaps Queen Luise of Prussia had a little bit of all that in her. Yet, above all else, since 1797, she had been Prussian queen, mother of 10 children, and wife of Frederick William III, to whom she was a faithful companion through all of life’s ups and downs. Photo: SPSG/Wolfgang Pfauder
Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Luise Auguste Wilhelmine Amalie; 10 March 1776 – 19 July 1810) was Queen of Prussia as the wife of King Frederick William III. The couple's happy, though short-lived, marriage produced nine children, including the future monarchs Frederick William IV of Prussia and Wilhelm I, German Emperor. Her legacy became cemented after her extraordinary 1807 meeting with French Emperor Napoleon I at Tilsit – she met with the emperor to plead unsuccessfully for favourable terms after Prussia's disastrous losses in the Napoleonic Wars. She was already well-loved by her subjects, but her meeting with Napoleon led Louise to become revered as "the soul of national virtue". Her early death at the age of thirty-four "preserved her youth in the memory of posterity", and caused Napoleon to reportedly remark that the king "has lost his best minister". The Order of Louise was founded by her grieving husband four years later as a female counterpart to the Iron Cross.

The New Chambers of Sanssouci, Potsdam. Originally the orangery, in 1768 King Frederick The Great gave a commission to redesign the building into a grand guest palace, known today as the ‘New Chambers’. The interiors are that of the classic ‘Frederician Rococo’ style, made up of sumptuous banquet rooms and suites. King Frederick II of Prussia did not wish to see any images of himself in his immediate environment. However, he had nothing against his likeness circulating around the world. This happened in many ways—during his lifetime and no less frequently until the start of the 20th century. These representations were always associated with interpretations and perceptions of the Prussian monarch that the time in question was supposed to and did record of him.

So, I asked @gilsart before and now I am here in the quest of knowledge! Can you recommend any books about Friedrich the Great (and the others, of course) in English or German?
Hi there! I'll just chuck a few things at you that I could think of on a whim, there's a ton more out there.
If you want a fun biography that's easy to read to get the gist of things: Mitford is your gal. Very easy to read, pretty short, lots of pictures, fun. A bit old though, lacks sources. (Mitford, Nancy: Frederick the Great, 1970)
If you want a more up to date biography that actually cites sources: Blanning. While he's got his faults, it's probably the most thorough biography to start with and is great for source mining. (Blanning, Tim: Frederick the Great: King of Prussia, 2015)
For anything Katte-related: Kloosterhuis. The most accessible book about the subject is "Katte. Ordre und Kriegsartikel" (make sure to get the second edition from 2011, it has more fun sources in the back). There's also an exhibition catalogue called "Kriegsgericht in Köpenick" that you can find used and that has even more stuff (and an overview of the people involved, very helpful).
For Fritz being a bitch and more info on interesting people around him: Ziebura's biographies of his brothers, especially Henry. (Ziebura, Eva: Prinz Heinrich von Preußen, 1999)
For Fritz writing affectionate letters in questionable German: The Fredersdorf correspondence (Richter, Johannes: Die Briefe Friedrichs des Großen an seinen vormaligen Kammerdiener Fredersdorf, 1926)
For court gossip and gay drama including Henry: The Lehndorff diaries (Ernst Ahasverus Heinrich Graf von Lehndorff: Die Tagebücher des Grafen Lehndorff, 2019; same translation also available as Dreissig Jahre am Hofe Friedrichs des Großen, 1907)
I also recommend checking out the Research Center Sanssouci and parts of the SPSG's blog for various articles (the SPSG has posted articles from their pricey exhibition catalogues before, worth a shot) and the digital edition of the Oeuvres de Frédéric le Grand
If The Rest Of The Niche has anything to add, do not hesitate!

Frederick the Great's private concert room in Potsdam's Neues Palais was created in the style of the concert room in Sanssouci Palace. The richly decorated wall panelling with its delicate green and golden tones makes the room something very special. This also includes the instruments on the ceiling, which are real gilded instruments. Amazing, isn't it! Video: SPSG/Nicole Romberg

The classical facade and sumptuous interior of the Belvedere Klausberg, situated in the Sanssouci Park, Potsdam. The Belvedere was constructed circa 1772 and was influenced by Emperor Nero’s monumental imperial palace in Rome. The building is adorned with forty columns and bejewelled with sandstone figurines depicting divinities.
