Camp Western is kinda lackluster this year

Or: why I don't like Camp Western as much this year, based on things I've noticed.

Note beforehand: yes of course I know that since it's the second year it no longer has the novelty it had last year. But I still think my points have some validity. Also note that these are my experiences as someone who also played Camp Western last year.

Less new sets

While I love what we did get, only one new token set is ridiculous to me. Last year we got four. I figured that maybe they'd add more this week, but nope. The shilling sets are beautiful as always, but it does NOT escape me that both are recolours. I think it might have something to do with the wardrobe update dropping later, but that just makes me more worried for the Cloud Kingdom clothing sets too.

2. Less incentive

While the missing animals, Firgrove races, and Starshine races are of course there year round, they gave you tokens last year, and this year they don't. I think it's a shame because having it give tokens really incentivized people to interact more with those races and things that they usually wouldn't. (I know I rarely touch the Starshine races, for example, just because of how weird to control it makes your horse). Current things to do are mainly just task board, chests, horses, and then just running around gathering more gold, I guess? But gathering gold doesn't feel as worth it this year as there's way less to do with it, at least if you participated last year. Outside of Gary's supplies, the chickens, and some token trades, gold is not really needed in high amounts this year. Last year I gathered like, at least 20k total and still had the drive to get more. This year I've started selling it just to afford shilling sets, since I now have the chickens and all new token stuff, so trading it isn't much worth it anymore (except to trade tokens for tack that I can also sell for shillings). It makes the Camp more log-in, do-tasks, log-out for me.

3. The new race is a good concept with a laggy execution

I like the idea of the new race! However it makes my framerate drop like nothing else for seemingly no good reason, and I have a good laptop! My framerate usually only drops during high-prop champs like Valedale! The yetis are also not as much of an obstacle as probably intended, they're easily jumpable, and I even heard you can just run through them? My guess is that it was supposed to be the Camp Western equivalent to Sabine's race at Equifest in terms of difficulty, which is fair. But at least Sabine's difficulty came from the race itself and not lagginess.

4. Just small oversights and weird changes

Why is there no closet at Starshine when I could swear there was one last year? Why can you not get the pet items more than once? You don't have to let us be able to get the pets multiple times, but it would just be nice to have the items. (Come on now, you must know by now that we love to collect. What else were those fun Red String drops for?)

All I'm saying is the reward for twelve days' worth of chest-hunting and weathering the local wildlife probably should have been a little bit more than one bandanna. 😅

It was also just cute of Scott to call the person who's been a vagrant and living in the wilderness and abandoned buildings for years "soft" and "used to cushy ranch life and indoor plumbing". Don't go near that neigh-haw, man. Lailo is ready to take names.

Since the information in the article is conflicting, here’s some facts and tips about Camp Western!

1. You won’t loose your gold nuggets when caught by an animal, even though the article claims you will.

2. Lures, repellents and keys can be found in the wild as well! They’re a bit rarer though.

3. There are four horses each day, I don’t know why they say five later in the article.

4. The manure does seem to work as a repellent, but it doesn’t work very long, so be careful!

5. The shovel for today’s quest can be found in one of the stables, unlike an unrelated random event will claim.

6. You can get more than 10 summer tokens with gold nuggets a day, again I don’t know why the article claims you can’t. Each of those trades can only be made once a day though.

7. The article mentions items I’m not aware of being in the game yet, they might appear in the upcoming weeks of the Camp (chicken pets fall under this).

8. Don’t forget to activate the quest with Scott!

9. Try to keep a few repellents on you just in case.

10. The main roads are generally safe to travel, as is the sheep pit! There is a safe path to get to the rangers station in Firgrove close to the gates of Firgrove that won’t lead you past any wolves. (When coming out of the village, go left and keep walking straight ahead until you find the path to your left.) It’s used in one of the races too).

11. Mary’s lost animals will give you summer coins for the duration of this festival!
