Song of the Day: May 14
"Diamond on a Landmine” by Billy Talent
#song of the day#buckle up babes this one's a nice showcase of how my brain retains memories which is to say it's a long path to a close destination#in early 2011 when Leverage's season three had recently wrapped#one of my friends was writing a character study piece for Eliot with a partial focus on his toxic relationship with Damien Moreau#and they made a writing playlist for the fic that included this song#(and also 'Laughing with a Mouth of Blood' by St Vincent. absolutely killer song)#and I like the song but for whatever reason I never looked up anything else by Billy Talent#(I was at the time not spending so much time looking up new music but more just letting it come to me#in 2017 St Vincent came out with 'Los Ageless' and I was like oh I know her!! and I started paying attention to her albums#which is good because then in 2021 she released the Daddy's Home album which has 'Pay Your Way in Pain' /and/ 'The Melting of the Sun'#which are absolutely incredible tracks and my life would've been less without them)#and then today I saw a Call of Duty post with lyrics from Billy Talent's 'Afraid of Heights'#and I didn't recognize the lyrics so I went and pulled up the song as how I do#and as it played I was like. do I know this? no. I know something like this. what is it?#and at first I was convinced I'd just been listening to it but then why couldn't I place it? and then I realized I hadn't heard it recently#but I had been /thinking/ about something /related/ to it--which I had been. sort of. there's a Damien Moreau post queued for tomorrow--#and then in Afraid of Heights the chorus was wrapping up#'you're the only one I'd follow til the end of time / if we fall we fall together baby don't think twice again'#and something clicked and I dragged 'Diamond on a Landmine' up out of the depths of my various-artists folder#it's a great song got an excellent build to it#'alone at last / I can't wait til we're alone at last / all I wanted was a second chance / a second chance / to hold you in my arms at last#and the visual of 'better watch your step / she's a diamond on a landmine' is fantastic#anyway! I made giant scotch eggs with my family's spicy sausage ball mix instead of the normal breading and they're amazing#a good day#two weeks into May already can you imagine

love when you revisit music that you used to listen to nonstop during a specific period in your life for the first time after that period, and all of a sudden you get the Context for whatever the fuck was going on back then

to build off my last post:
daddy's home is one of st vincent's nastiest (affectionate) albums and the girlies (gender neutral) had the gall to say it was too "clean sounding" because jack antonoff produced it.
i love daddy's home but i can see why people didn't. either way, it's clearly annie's vision and her ideas and it was annoying to see people straight up ignore the actual content of the album because they didn't like jack antonoff.
what you're hearing is annie!! not jack!! if you don't like the sound or the album, it's because you didn't like what annie wanted!! that's fine!! just don't credit what she did with the album to some man!
anyway, jack antonoff gets jobs because he's good at working with the artist and showing off what they want. at the moment taylor swift is embarrassing and what she wants is embarrassing, so that is to her detriment. even the songs with aaron dessner aren't great.

omg peak jude law would've been so hot as st vincent
Thank yooou. I've told many people this and they're like "what are you talking about" and here's my thing: a lot of these reeeeally popular romance novels, especially historicals, were written like 10+ years ago and written by women who are older than than a lot of their young readers, and they have *different standards*.... *better standards*, some would say.... There are very few people who are writing romance novels with Timothee Chalamet and Tom Holland in mind, is what I'm saying.
I see Sam Claflin recommended a lot for St. Vincent and a) I personally find him attractive only in very specific situations and that cannot stand and b) I just do not think Sam Claflin has the SAUCE for St. Vincent.
When I think of a man who gives off vibes that are so, so slutty... Vibes that say "I will fuck you and never call you but you'll be okay with it".... Vibes that say "I cannot win a fight, but I will bone your girlfriend and hopefully make it out the window"... Vibes that say "I am completely broke but you'll let me stay on your mom's phone plan..."
That is Peak Jude Law. He is hot in a lean way, he gives "great conversationalist, absolute fuckboy", WE KNOW HE IS because he FUCKED THE NANNY and Sienna Miller, God bless her, WENT BACK FOR MORE???
And even the nanny was like "no ragrets" about it.
Here's the thing, too. Everyone knew Jude was a dog. (And let us be real, he probably still is, but he was incredible in The Young Pope so I'll allow it.) Everyone knew! There was no sense of "oh Jude Law is actually just a nice boy you bring home to Mom" like these guys today try to sell to the media. NO!!!! We were like "Jude Law is a fucking slut and we're living for it. Who will he bone next?"
Like, he wasn't breaking any laws (.... that I know of). He was just spreading his seed across the land, and probably still does. Why does everyone think he was so hot in The Holiday? Do people hONESTLY think a NON-SLUTTY MAN could play that role??? FOR REAL. FOR REAL FOR REAL. "I am daddy" give me a fucking break.
See: Hugh Grant playing Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver in Bridget Jones's Diary. I'm not even attracted to Hugh Grant like that. But I do miss that moment in time when we were like "slutty is as slutty does". Of course, there were obviously misogyny issues because women couldn't do that and you know general other issues, I'm sure Jude has given many an STI, but I'm not talking who he is as a person, I am talking his image at his height, and that is. The Vibe. For Sebastian St. Vincent.

thoughts on new st. vincent song?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYJxPg6quL4
I like it. It's stuck in my head more easily than anything on Daddy's Home. I want her to keep trying new stuff so I hope All Born Screaming delivers some more bangers.
