In the world of bare-knuckle boxing, one name emerged as a symbol of resilience and skill: Peter Jackson. Born in Christiansted, St. Croix in the Caribbean in 1861, Jackson would go on to become one of the most formidable fighters of his time, leaving an indelible mark on the sport. Beyond his boxing career, Jackson left a lasting legacy as a pioneer for racial equality in the sport. His success in the face of adversity helped pave the way for future generations of fighters, breaking down barriers and challenging racial prejudices.

Children go to class in Frederiksted on St. Croix in the Danish West Indies. St. Croix and several other islands formed the Danish West Indies, which were run as slave-plantation economies until slavery was abolished in Danish territory in 1848. After the abolition of slavery, Denmark began to consider selling the islands to Germany or the United States. The islands were eventually sold, becoming the U.S. Virgin Islands, in 1917.
Today was our first day out in St Croix. We had a class with Professor Chajes and Professor Wittington in the morning where we had an introduction to sustainability as well as a brief history of the island.
After class, we went to a celebration with the locals where we ate some rice and peas and very tender pork, as music played in the background. At around 1pm, we were allowed to explore parts of the island in small groups. My friends and I went to the boardwalk to look at some stores and meet some locals. Some other students went over to the beach. We spoke to the woman at the ice cream store about sustainability issues the island might be facing and she said the coral reef degradation was a major issue.
We spent a couple hours exploring and at 6pm we went to grab groceries together. I finished off the day with dinner at Drews on the Boardwalk with some friends.
