Group Ride to Blairstown Airport –– the Long Way

With rain predicted for Saturday (the third Saturday washout in a row if you're keeping score) creative thinking was called for. So a Friday group ride it is (was). The first leg had our group of four riders leaving The 9W Market in Palisades, NY, and arriving in Greenwood Lake for a late breakfast ("three forks" on the Saddle Bums Ratings Chart). From there it was about 40 miles southwest to The Airport Café ("four forks!") in Blairstown, NJ. All backroads chockablock with small farms, barns, rolling hills and the changing colors of the season.

Fall is my favorite season to ride.  Fortunately my friend Mark feels the same way.  When the last day of September looked like it was going to be a perfect fall day, he quickly jumped in when I reached out to him asking if he wanted to go on a ride.  

I had a little ride to meet up with him.  Along the way I noticed something in the sky.  Someone else was enjoying this beautiful fall day.  I started watching the hot air balloon ducking behind the mountains as I rode west.  As I cut through Little Washington, it looked like our paths would come close to intersecting so I pulled off to get some pics of the B&B (Bike and Balloon).  I imagined the view from up there was fantastic, and wondered if the folks in the basket were looking down at the bike pulled off on the side of the back road and speculating about the great day ahead of its’ rider as I was speculating about them.

I met up with Mark and we had a great ride through the Shenandoah Valley.  As we were approaching Harrisonburg I signaled to Mark to pull off into a gas station.  We were literally a half mile from my son’s college dorm room and I gave him a quick call.  He said he would get dressed and come on out and say hi, so Mark and I headed over and met him in the parking lot.  I wished I had the forethought to have his jacket and helmet in the trunk, but I didn't realize that we would be out this way.  Otherwise he would have climbed abouard and joined us for a little ride to the Bar-B-Q Mark was taking me to that was about 10 miles away.

He had some work to do anyway, so we said our good byes and Mark and I headed to Hanks Bar-B-Q.  The food and service were good.  But the weather, the ride, the company, the surprise visit made the day.  DId I mention that I Love fall riding??

double wishbone front suspension with easily upgraded, semi trailing arm rear.

heaps of room for a bike engine (possibly even a BMW K1600gt?) with a small Rav4 LSD in front of it with a 4.5 ratio. having something that revs stupidly high like a VFR or a R1 doesnt really make sense, as the diff ratio would need to be like 6/1 to account for the torque loss.

ideally you could build something like this with a full 8 point cage, 100kw+ power plant and a final kerb weight for around 700kg, possibly more though.

the heavy rear would make it not ideal for loose surfaces, but you could leverage this setup for maximum traction and steering feel, just requiring the overall driving style to be a lot straighter and focus on 4 wheel drift over counter steering.

ideally i would run an R1250GS 100kW engine and gearbox or even a Honda ST1300 mated to a smaller diff, something like a Rav4 T series. seam weld and brace the chassis, 8 point cage, full rally spec dampers, hubs and brakes, 13x6 wheels and tyres, and an upgrade to a steering rack. 

something like this could probably take on the big dogs of Australian gravel rally. i would personally want to run the K1600gt engine but i think you would need to run a 4 or 2 cylinder engine to meet regulations...
