Obliquely, I suddenly recalled a line from The Bishop's Mantle (by Agnes Sligh Turnbull, 1947 - read it here) where Lexa, the young bishop's firecracker of a wife, refers to one of the parishioners as being in a very fast crowd - "it really steps!"

So now I'm conflating Peter Lorre on stairsteps as symptomatic of him really steppin'.

STAIRCASE (1969) dir. Stanley Donen Although Charles and Harry have been a couple for years, tension threatens their already dysfunctional relationship. The two hairdressers are excessively devoted to their mothers but increasingly snippy toward one another. Verbal barbs shoot in all directions without any sort of cease-fire in sight. The fact that Charles might be in trouble with the law for cross-dressing at a nightclub doesn't help matters either. (link in title)
