10 facts about Sour Patch, perhaps?
Hahaha, mais oui, ma chere!
Tumblr media
1) Erik is bisexual. He’s actually had more crushes on men than women over the years, but because he’s much more comfortable speaking his mind than speaking from the heart, his relationship with Roxy Kim @mira-shard is actually his first really serious foray into the realm of romance. Who knew my confident, snarky Sour Patch Kid could actually be a Mr.-Darcy-level awkward turtle, when it comes to love! LOL!
2) Although Erik has been attracted to more men than women, Leia Organa from the original Star Wars trilogy was his first childhood crush. His second was on Cary Elwes, the actor who played Westley in The Princess Bride.
3) Even though he has adapted very well to the Wizarding World, Erik’s still very fond of the Muggle world and its trends. He not only played Nintendo games back in the day, but he’s also a big fan of Muggle movies. Carewyn and he have gone to the movies very frequently over the years, sometimes with a friend or two of Carewyn’s from back in the day.
4) Erik’s favorite movie genre is fantasy: he especially enjoys fantasy films that have a darker or more “adult” edge to them, like Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Pan’s Labyrinth.
5) His one true fandom love, however, is Star Wars. It was the first...well, anything that he bonded with his father, Phillip Apollo, over, and whenever Erik revisits it, he feels that little bit closer to Phillip.
6) Although Erik does drink, he always cuts himself off at two drinks, no matter what size, because of the bad memories he’s retained of his mother Sadie when she was an alcoholic.
7) Because of his trauma of being captured by the Death-Eater-controlled Ministry of Magic and being hauled before the Muggle-Born Registration Commission, Erik’s greatest fear is a dementor. Azkaban no longer employs them as guards any more and the Wizarding World now actively tries to contain them as much as possible (considering they are creatures that were originally made from very Dark magic to begin with), but whenever Erik encounters one in the outside world, he shows an astounding level of brutality in destroying it, with the thought that “that way they can never be used to torture anyone else again.”
8) Erik’s Patronus is a Siberian Cat. He went out of his way to learn how to cast the spell on his own while he was still at Hogwarts, given his history with dementors. He mastered the spell at age 14 -- his go-to “happy memory” is when Carewyn bought him his first familiar, a black and white tuxedo cat Erik called Han Solo. He also goes out of his way to teach his sixth and seventh year students the Patronus Charm so they can all cast one by the time they graduate -- he was particularly proud when his “apprentices” Jordi Prewett @cursebreakerelmswood and Mitch C. Hodge @department-shoe-stud both mastered the Charm in their one-on-one sessions, prior to him teaching the rest of their class.
9) On the note of cats, because of his mother, Erik has always been a cat person. The very first cat Erik ever knew was a grumpy Siberian Cat (*eyes Patronus response with a smirk*) named Tabitha, who hated everyone except for Sadie Apollo until she gave birth to her son, Erik. Tabitha, who would scratch at anyone who so much as looked at her funny, softened to the little “hairless kitten,” curling up on his blanket on the floor to “watch over” Erik. Tabitha disappeared from the Apollo home, presumably to die, when she was 16 and Erik was five.
10) Erik has always had a marked talent for Divination, particularly scrying and prophecy. When he was a young boy, he always was able to predict when surprise quizzes were going to happen and what was going to be on them. He first realized what that “luck” of his meant when he caught sight of what looked like someone being drenched in red paint in one of Trelawney’s crystal balls in Divination, only to find out that nobody else had seen it. Later that month, Peeves ended up splashing red paint all over the rest of the third year class as they walked out of the Great Hall as a prank.

Hello there! I wasn’t sure if you were still taking requests. Could I request Eggsy x reader #12 with a shy techie reader? I just found your blog and I’m enjoying reading through all you work!
Hi darling! I am so glad you are enjoying the blog. This was such a fun request to write so I hope you like it. Also, warning of swearing ahead. Quite a few f-bombs.
12. “I was so afraid I was going to lose you.”
Kingsman - Eggsy x fem!reader
“Everyone?” Eggsy asked Merlin as they stood among the wreckage of Kingsman headquarters.
“Everyone but us it seems,” Merlin said, cold and quiet.
Everyone was an overwhelming thought. Eggsy’s mind raced through all the people that meant, all the people he’d spent the past year alongside saving the world, good people he’d gotten to know and one he’d even grown to care for a little too much. Arthur who was just rebuilding the organization. Roxy, who’d come to be a solid support system and wonderful agent. And you.
“Even Y/N?” Eggsy couldn’t stop himself from asking. You were Merlin’s apprentice. Surely if he were spared, so were you, at least Eggsy hoped.
“At the mansion working on the latest prototypes,” Merlin stated, his voice numb to it all.
Eggsy did the only thing he could do; he stared out at the destruction, the rain aiding in hiding his true emotions. You had meant more to him than he had realized before this moment. You weren’t just a coworker, a quiet nerd who helped him out of tough scenarios when on missions. You were more; a brilliant mind, a beautiful smile, a kind embrace, a woman he’d wanted to ask out more than once, but always found himself too afraid to do so, never sure what you thought of him or if you’d even be interested. Now he’d never know.
The two men decided to enact the Kingsman doomsday protocol and upon discovering the whiskey, had no idea what to do other than drink away their sorrow. And once safely and thoroughly drunk, words to express just what they felt became a lot easier.
“The whole Charlie taxi thing. It’s all my fault,” Merlin managed to get out through tears. He flung his head forward, catching himself before it hit the table.
“Bullshit,” Eggsy corrected, reaching over to hold his friend by the shoulder, “You’re the best, bruv. Without you, I’d have lost it.” Eggsy paused, his mind recalling all the times Merlin saved his ass and all the times you were there when Merlin wasn’t.
After a moment, Eggsy added, slurred, “You’re the best, but Y/N was the fucking best, you know?”
Merlin looked up at him, head still nearly resting on the table, “Is fucking best better than best?”
Eggsy took a moment to sigh and swirl his glass, “Yeah, it is.”
“In that case, I agree with you. Y/N was the ‘fucking’ best. Smart, kind, eager to test new things, a little quiet but –”  Merlin was cut off by Eggsy’s soft mutter, “Perfect.”
“You really liked her?” Merlin asked, as though the stars were aligning and finally making sense of his reality.
“No, bruv,” he corrected, taking the last big swig of his glass before hitting it down on the table. “I loved her. She saved my ass so many times. Every time I was hurt, she was there. She’d sing to herself while she was working in the lab and every time I heard it, I wanted to kiss her.”
Merlin listened intently to Eggsy’s rant, nodding his head a few times before fully reclining into the table.
“The few times I tried to flirt with her, she’d shy away from me. I just assumed she wasn’t interested. And now I feel like I royally fucked up. If she’d been with me last night, been my girl, then maybe… fuck,” Eggsy ended by laying his head down on to table too, the near empty bottle settled between them.
“I think she liked you too,” Merlin added, drumming his fingers on the table beside his head.
“Yeah? Well, shit,” was all Eggsy could say.
“She didn’t enjoy having lots of people around but she’d let you stay with her in the tech bunker for hours. She liked you,” Merlin said with finality.
Eggsy just let out a hum, closing his eyes and resting more comfortably against the hardwood.
Both men were startled upward by a noise at the door to the tasting room.
“Oh god, you’re alive,” you said, pulling your hand to your face in shook.
“Y/N,” both men whispered in unison.
“Why are you here?” Merlin asked, turning his head to you in disbelief.
Eggsy was already standing, running towards you on unstable legs. You laughed as he nearly tripped over a chair on the way to you. “I’m following the doomsday protocol,” you said before Eggsy crashed into you, wrapping you in his arms and nuzzling your neck, earning him even more giggles and the most glorious blush he’d ever seen. “Eggsy!” you said, trying to hide yourself in his shoulder to cover your embarrassment.
“I was so afraid I was going to lose you,” Eggsy breathed again your skin as he held you.
You sighed, clinging tighter to him as well, excited by his clear affection.
“How- How’d you survive?” Merlin asked, still seated and reclining, clearly intoxicated.
“I was taking Cooper out for a walk when it happened. Just good timing, I guess?” you informed your boss before turning your attentions back to the man who was now trying to pick you up but was lacking the coordination to do so. “Are you drunk too, Eggsy?” you asked him.
“Just a little, babe,” he said against your hair, “I was just so fucking sad you died. Forgive me?” He pulled away slightly to look at your face. “God, you’re fuckin’ gorgeous, babe,” he added before bringing his hand up to caress your face.
You turned your eyes to the floor, feeling the flush overtake every inch of exposed skin. “Eggsy,” you chastised once more as Eggsy grew bolder, kissing your neck and ear, overwhelmed by such a display of affection but overjoyed by what it meant.
“Glad you’re safe, Y/N,” Merlin called over from the table as he poured himself another drink, observing the couple in front of him. “He loves you, you know?” he added for good measure.
Eggsy immediately pulled away from you, sending Merlin a death glare that made you laugh.
“Eggsy, is that true?” you asked, as if the smattering of wet kisses across your neck hadn’t made that answer obvious. But you wanted to hear it from him.
He looked at you sheepishly. “Is it okay if it is?” he asked.
You smiled before turning your eyes to the floor. After a moment, you turned them up to meet his. “Definitely okay.”
Eggsy rushed forward and pulled you into his arms again, spinning you around in the most uncoordinated of twirls. Merlin applauded from where he sat, happy that something seemed to be going right for once.
“Are you even going to remember this in the morning?” you asked.
“Remember this? Sweetheart, you just made my day. No - my life,” he had gently placed you down and now had both of you cheeks in his hands. “God, you’re just so fucking perfect,” he muttered before leaning forward to kiss you.
But before your lips could meet, Merlin called to the two of you. “Sorry to interrupt, but do either of you have any idea what we’re supposed to do now? Also, Y/N should have a drink of this stuff since that seems to be the protocol,” he added, shaking the bottle out towards you.
“Guys, that bottle says Statesman,” you said to the two drunken fools you were surrounded with.
“Yeah,” Merlin said, clearly not seeing your point.
“Statesman. Like Kingsman, but for the States? Maybe we are supposed to go there?”
“Statesman,” Merlin whispered, staring at the bottle to confirm your words. “Statesman,” he said again a little more confidently.
“Statesman,” Eggsy said, too, smiling at you with a light chuckle, “That’s my brilliant girl!” He took your face again in his hands, not allowing Merlin to interrupt this time as he kissed you properly. You sighed into his hands, his lips light and soft against your own, not demanding anything but not leaving you in want either. You pushed forward a little to increase the contact and you felt Eggsy smile at your response, his fingers caressing lightly in front of your ear.
When you pulled away and saw his face, completely dazed and enamored with you, you couldn’t help but blush. You turned to the man still at the table staring at the bottle of alcohol before him. “I think I’ll take that drink now, Merlin.”

About a week ago I was talking to @robininthelabyrinth about doing some Rogue-centric comics recaps, starting with the brief time Heatwave worked at Cadmus with Superboy.
For those of you wondering “Why is what is generally a criminal working with a hero?” here’s a brief rundown of things that happened that lead up to this point:
Back in the mid-90s there was an event called Underworld Unleashed in which Nero, DC’s version of Satan, tricked most of the Rogues into attacking key points around… some continent that is literally unrecognizable on a map.  Those points exploded, killing them.  The event went on, Trickster I figured out Neron’s angle and helped the heroes defeat him and the Rogues remained dead at the end of it.  A couple years (real time) later, Flash issues 125-129, Neron is back to his old, manipulating people into giving him unlimited power schtick and brings the Rogues’ souls to Earth, this time as unkillable, power-amplified specters bent on causing as much death and destruction as possible.  Through Linda and Wally’s teamwork and love for each other, Neron is forced to retreat while restoring the Rogues their souls/life.  In the New Year’s Evil special issue, Trickster I tricks the Rogues into going after a sacred treasure in a Zhutan temple when, surprise, Neron pops back up and Heatwave, who emphatically does not want his soul back in Neron’s clutches, convinces the other Rogues to help Tricks and Piper defeat him.  It was a convoluted issue.  After Neron is, yet again, defeated, Heatwave decides to stay with the Zhutan monks, hoping to save his soul by being good.
That is, to my knowledge, the last we see of Mick until his appearance in Superboy 65.  Recaps are taken from issues 65, 76-81, 87-90
For those unfamiliar with this particular run, here are some characters to know:
Superboy/Kon-El: a psuedo-clone of Superman who debuted following The Death of Superman storyline.  Very 90’s teen-with-attitude, he’s one of the founders of Young Justice. His powers weren’t originally copying Superman’s (he was originally a modified human clone rather than half-Kryptonian) but mimics the basic flight/super strength/super durability through the use of tactile telekinesis.  Lives at a Cadmus facility.  At the time, his relationship with Clark was very… hands off.
Guardian/Jim Harper: another Cadmus clone who acts as chief of security and mentor to Kon.  As a clone, his body was modified to be stronger, faster, etc, with accelerated healing.  He also has an indestructible shield.
Dr. Serling Roquette: former head of the genetics division with a sense of style that is both terrible and amazing.  Has a thing for Kon.
Mickey Cannon: Cadmus admin director. Called ‘the Mechanic’, he’s said to be able to fix anything.  Uh… that’s about all I can say about him, really.
Dubbilex: one of Cadmus’s experiments known as a DNAlien, part chaperone and part mentor to Kon.  He is a powerful telepath and can use telekinesis.
Dr. Dabney Donovan: co-founder of Cadmus and creator of various genetic experiments.  You remember that line from Jurassic Park about scientists being so concerned if they could they never considered if they should?  This guy never bothered to hear the second part of that sentence.
Dr. Helen Angelico: head of genetics, called Doc Angel.  Not nearly enough of her.
So we start with Kon crashing a ship into the aptly named Planet Krypton- a superhero-themed restaurant that, thankfully had just been shut down for renovations -with some Challengers of the Unknown.  Who will continue to be unknown because I don’t know a thing about them.  He’d been gone for so long, Cadmus was trying to find someone to replace him as a field agent.
Tumblr media
Always fun to play 'Who Can You Name?’
Some heroes decide it isn’t their scene and bounce, others attempt and fail to make themselves look good, and others still- notably Young Justice to the side there -just want some news on Kon.  Steel and Kyle, meanwhile, are there as JLA reps, passing along info about Superboy as it comes (which, at the moment, isn’t really anything).
Tumblr media
Guardian, please.  Cadmus hires much worse than a crook with a flamethrower.
Tumblr media
After being exposed, Punch and Jewelee take Serling hostage.  Luckily that’s when Superboy finally manages to make it back.
Figuring with Kon back in the picture, a new field agent is no longer needed so the heroes begin to disperse.  Until Cannon decides to hire Mick as a back up agent.
Tumblr media
And potential patsy.  Nothing comes of this mental aside.
Jumping forward to issue 76, a little backstory is needed to understand the current situation.  Originally Kon’s genes were modified to stop aging at 16 because of a clone disease, but, immediately proceeding this issue, the events of Sins of Youth caused Cadmus scientists to restart his aging, unfortunately at the expense of his powers leading to Cadmus to call in their back-up agent.
He’s not without his own gadgets, of course- a Legion ring grants him flight and a Cadmus scientist by the name of Gadget Guru gave him a shield that can fold and expand in an instant.  Kon tries asking Harper to train him but Harper declines despite preferring to have Kon watching his back over Mick.
Donovan tries to get Serling to cash in on a favor she owes him but, before she can meet him, gets into a reconstructed space ship with Kon, Cannon and the Guru which takes off into space.  As Cadmus tries to locate them, Rex Leech, Kon’s former very shady manager, comes in carrying his unconscious daughter, Roxy.  Meanwhile, a pair of Cadmus guards are transporting an important blood sample that Donovan, mad that Serling didn’t follow his instructions, decides to take for himself.
Tumblr media
Oh comics.
Doc Angel has Roxy stabilized in a containment tank while Rex tries to schmooze up to Mick.
Tumblr media
Harper gets an urgent call to get to a storage vault.
Tumblr media
For some reason they call Mick “Rory Calhoun”- and it’s not just here.  There’s at least one issue in the Flash- written by the then current writers -where he’s called that.  I don’t know why this is a thing.
Anyway, a bunch of guards dead on the floor, their armor torn open but whatever killed them instantly cauterized their wounds.  On the wall are the words 'Rip’ and 'Jak’.  An alarm goes off, announcing a fire in Lab Three- Doc Angel’s lab.
Tumblr media
Quick shout out to Paul Gambi, the Rogues’ tailor, for making some fantastically durable costumes.  Mick’s in particular has been noted on more than one occasion to not only survive some of the hottest temperatures around, but also protects him well enough he barely breaks a sweat withstanding those temps.
Doc Angel is missing but Roxy’s tank was damaged in the fire meaning it’s time for the Guru’s apprentice Tekka to step up.  Harper, meanwhile, explains to Mick that they had a possible sample of Jack the Ripper’s blood and Donovan is the most likely person to make a clone from it.
Tumblr media
Tekka finds a hole in the floor that’s venting heat like a volcano.  In true, heroic fashion, Harper and Mick head down.
Tumblr media
Ripjak attack!  Turns out that Ripjak’s blood and even touching his skin burns on contact.  Harper says Donovan must have infused Ripjak’s blood with pyro-granulite, something Donovan’s done before. Unfortunately the build-up means he’ll explode, destroying anything or one near him.  They chase him to where Doc Angel is being held. Harper plays bait while Mick frees the doc.
Ripjak does a number on the two before they toss him into the geothermal reactor, including partially melting Harper’s shield and managing to burn through Mick’s suit.
Tumblr media
They’re both treated and expected to make a full recovery, and Tekka stabilizes Roxy.
Meanwhile, in Kon’s half of the plot, the bad guy he’d been fighting, Kossak the Slaver, gets beaten out of his own ship and escapes, following a beacon that leads him to Cadmus.  He heads to Lab Three and claims that Roxy is an escaped slave he’s here to collect.  Kon gets back in time to stop Kossak from attacking Doc Angel and, in the ensuing fight, Roxy’s tank explodes.
Roxy is actually possessed by… something, which makes her skin turn bright red and her eyes glow.  She agrees to return to Kossak so long as he leaves all the people in the lab alone and, when she goes to say goodbye to Kon, imparts her power on him.  Which somehow kickstarts Kon’s powers again and Kossack leaves after another butt-kicking.
Tumblr media
Superboy, back in costume, visits Harper, passing over the gauntlet with collapsible shield since Harper’s was destroyed.
Roxy is back in the containment tank after giving Kon her power and Doc Angel called in a doctor from STAR Labs, Sarah Charles.  The two promptly get snippy at each other and Kon has them leave to cool off.  Which is, of course, when Roxy busts her way out again as the red sun critter thing, saying she won’t be kept imprisoned.  She flies off, Kon gives chase and when Harper does the same.
Tumblr media
She starts destroying property in a town called Kurtzberg and a local cop, with all the logic and protocol of a generic comic cop, calls for the two of them to freeze while simultaneously firing directly at Roxy.  The bullets, however, melt in the heat she’s generating but Roxy doesn’t enjoy the unintentional pun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m not quite sure how Mick managed to get there before Harper who is in a flying car.
Anyway, it turns out the people Sarah called are the Titans who immediately peg Roxy as unstable (as in, unwilling to calm down) and decide they need to use force to contain her.  Kon isn’t having it and puts himself between them.  Tempest uses a hydrant to freeze Kon and Mick shoots off a blast of fire to free him.
Tumblr media
How can you be a jerk to that face, Harper?
Eventually Doc Angel and Sarah make it over and explain how Roxy’s sharing a body with an alien entity and they need the entity to expend its energy to get Roxy out.  The problem is eventually solved through what essentially amounts to the power of friendship.
Tumblr media
If you’re wondering how Arsenal got the heat gun, it’s because Nigthwing took out Mick in pretty short order.  Which, really- Nightwing vs Heatwave is no contest.
Mick doesn’t show up again until issue 87 where Harper dies in the line of duty, protecting someone from Shrapnel.  Mick doesn’t have over much to do this issue as Kon feels responsible for Harper’s death (Harper went out on that mission instead of Kon) and gets taken on an astral jaunt with Deadman.  There are a couple choice moments, though.
Tumblr media
I should note that Kon’s tactile telekinesis doesn’t work when he’s unconscious, making him as vulnerable as a normal person.
Tumblr media
I find it hilarious they gave Mick a flamethrower bigger than his torso.
But, at the end of the issue, there’s a cryptic conversation between Amanda Waller and Lex Luthor (he might’ve been president at this time, I don’t remember) and someone trying to steal Harper’s remains.  Kon manages to take it back and, upon opening the casket, finds there’s a baby inside.
Next issue, the Wall is very unhappy to see that her super-clone cargo has disappeared (aka with Kon) and threatens Cadmus as, being the Secretary of Metahuman Affairs (so yes, Luthor is president), they fall under her jurisdiction.  Cannon, not a fan of the kind of pressure Waller and the new administration is putting on them, decides to get rid of Cadmus.  Literally.  Asides from a hole in the ground, the building is gone.
In the span of a few days, baby Harper grows a couple years, old enough to talk and, with the memory of his previous life returning, worries that he’ll have to fight.  Oracle finds tech and data traced from Cadmus at a LexCorp building and Kon follows her directions to a sewer where he promptly fights tofu critters and finds Mick and Serling.
Tumblr media
I gotta say, artists generally make Mick the beefier of the Rogues (when they bother to give them different body types) but this artists really put that heroic build on him.  His shoulders are literally twice the width of his waist!
A random encounter with some sewer ferryman later, the quartet makes it to a weird underground compound where they jump a robot-looking thing and pull the equivalent of three-kids-in-a-trenchcoat with it.  They come across Talia al Ghul experimenting on a gender-flip Superman Blue by the name of Strange Visitor who I know nothing about.  After Talia and Waller’s assistant leaves, the gang bust out of their disguise and take out the guards.  Mostly.

And then this ability was never seen again.
Kon and Mick go to rescue Stranger who very much does not appreciate it.  Talia re-enters and calms down Stranger and the group is captured.  When they come to again, they’re on a space station.  Some guy in a flying chair named General Good makes an army of clones from Harper against Harper’s explicit wishes.  Kon destroys the incubating clones and the quartet is rescued by Sgt Rock who drafts them into the upcoming war.
This issues then follows into the Our Worlds at War event which I never read so if Mick shows up anywhere there, I don’t know about it. Superboy was also canceled shortly after.  In the following year Mick shows back up Flash comics in issues following up to Rogue War where his attempts at reformation are retconned as the Top’s influence in order to tie into the ongoing Identity Crisis event. And these issues are promptly forgotten by everyone and we are all deprived of Kon confronting Mick about going back to the Rogues. Especially egregious when Mick helped kill one of Kon’s best friends.  I mean, yes, Kon was also dead at the time but you’d think that’s one of the things you’d follow up on when you come back to life!

We are excited to be one of today’s stops on The Summer Set by Aimee Agresti Blog Tour.  Thanks to  Graydon House Books for the review copy and including us on this tour.
The Summer Set is a fun “beach” read. It reminds me a lot of the rom-com movies of the recent past like Leap Year and When in Rome. Charlie, our dashing staring lady, has a storied past and as you read on, is just fun, someone you’d want to call your best friend. She’s obviously a little broken, and has some things to work on, but her journey is one I’m along for the ride on.
The story follows her to a summer theatre festival where she performed at early in her career, and it’s now run by her ex, Nick, who directed her breakout theatre performance at this very festival and later, movie. She is part of the professional company doing three Shakespeare plays throughout the summer. The professional company is also joined by some younger apprentices, learning the different crafts of theatre.  I love that two of the apprentices also get POV moments in the story, mirroring Nick and Charlie. This what a little confusing to follow at first (probably because of the eARC formatting), but once I really got into the story, it was fun to see the big moments from the point of view of our younger, soon to be stars.
Also, if you are wondering why Aimee’s name sounds so familiar to YA readers, her first book was ILLUMINATE, the first book in the Gilded Wings Trilogy.
Thank you Graydon House Books for the provide author Q&A with Aimee.
Tumblr media
Q: Please give your elevator pitch for The Summer Set.
A: Gladly! THE SUMMER SET is a romp about a former Hollywood It Girl—Charlie Savoy—who flamed out, left the film world and now is almost 40 and back at the summer Shakespeare theater where she got her start as a teen….and where her ex is the artistic director. Drama and hijinks ensue! But it’s really a universal story about old flames, old friends, old rivals and second acts: having the courage to shake up your life!
Q: Which came first: the characters or plot line?
A: They sort of arrived together! This idea has been with me for a long time: I always had Charlie, my main character, and this sense of wanting her to be embarking on a “second act.” I wanted to tell the story of a bold, wild child kind of star who flamed out early and had to start over and figure out what she truly wanted. I always knew this character would be the type who seemed confident to anyone watching but was actually much more vulnerable deep down. Someone who’s acting as much offstage as onstage!
Q: Why do you love Charlie and why should readers root for her?
A: I really loved writing this character: she’s impulsive and aggressive and tough and uncontrollable. But all of her bravado is covering up how out of place she feels, how nervous she is to be back in the theater world after feeling like she failed in her film career. Anyone who has ever tried to act like they had it all together while actually being unsure on the inside (which I think is all of us, right?!) will understand Charlie and feel she’s a kindred spirit.
Q: We can see from your bio that you have written extensively about entertainment topics. Have you ever been involved in theatre yourself? If so, in which capacities? If not, what fascinates you about the theatre world?
A: As anyone who saw me as Miss Jones in Sherwood High School’s 1994 production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying would know: I am that drama geek who loves theater as much as humanly possible while having no actual talent. ;)  I was lucky enough to grow up in a small town with a fantastic theater—the Olney Theatre in Olney, MD—and I volunteered there (offstage!) all through high school. It was an amazing place because the actors were incredible, they were New York-based, and they would come and actually live together at a residence on the theater property. I’ve always had an overactive imagination so I remember wondering what went on there: which ones were friends, which ones weren’t, was anyone hooking up?! I was fascinated. That experience hanging around there definitely sowed the very early seeds of this novel!
Q: Obviously you've interacted with many celebrities. Who were the most fascinating to talk to?
A: Oooh, there were so many fun ones: George Clooney is my all-time favorite (he’s EVERYONE’S favorite!) because he’s just a supernice guy and is that type who seems to always be having a great time. Some more of my favorites who also had that same warm spirit and were so much fun to chat with: Sarah Jessica Parker, Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellweger, Ewan McGregor, Hugh Jackman, Hugh Grant, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the list goes on!
 Q: If you could star in a movie or Broadway show, which one would you choose and why?
A: HA! OMG, I love this question! Since THE SUMMER SET is set at a summer theater, I’ll choose Broadway! Wow, there are just. So. Many! I would love to be Angelica in Hamilton and Mimi in Rent and Roxie in Chicago! I assure you I would be absolutely TERRIBLE in all of these roles but it would be tons of fun!
Q: What was your last 5 star read?
A: I just re-read a favorite--THE LOST VINTAGE by the wonderful Ann Mah! It’s an absolute gem of a novel about love, secrets and drama in French wine country. Beautiful writing, fantastic storytelling and it also satisfies the wanderlust we’re all feeling these days.
Q: What is one thing about publishing you wish someone would have told you?
A: Oh wow, I feel like even five books in, I’m still learning! But I think one thing I never would’ve expected before I published my first novel is that every time a book comes out you feel that HUGE excitement but also that little rush of nerves, like: “OMG this thing that, for years, only lived in my head and on my laptop is now out there!!! Aaaah!” Or maybe that’s just me? ;)
Q: What inspired you to become a writer?
A: A love of reading! My mom is a librarian so I grew up reading everything in sight and I’ve just always loved escaping into books. I went to journalism school and worked in magazines, which I absolutely adored, but I always dreamed of writing novels, so I feel incredibly lucky to get to do this!
Q: What was your journey to get your first book published?
A: Great question! My first novel was ILLUMINATE, the first of my YA Gilded Wings Trilogy. I tend to write the book I most want to read at any given time and I got lucky that when I was in the mood for YA, so were a lot of other people, so that worked out! But I actually wrote another book BEFORE that one—it was a totally different vibe and not YA--that just didn’t hit things right, for whatever reason. I always say that publishing--the fiction world especially--is like falling in love and you need the right person to read the right manuscript on the right day and have the right connection to it in order to get published. I feel very lucky every time a book gets published!
Q: Let’s talk about your writing, what is your writing process like? Do you follow an outline or do you just see where the story leads you?
A: I’m a major outliner! I need to have everything mapped out. I need to know this journey has a destination. I admire writers who can let things unfold as they go—how freeing that must be!—but I’m a planner, it gives me comfort. Although, there are plenty of twists that only present themselves when you’re in the middle of writing so I do always let myself deviate from my outline too, great stuff comes out of that!
Q: Do you share your work along the way or wait until it is complete to have others read?
A: My sister is my beta reader and she is amazing! Sometimes I’ll give her the book as I’m writing it, as I did with THE SUMMER SET, and other times I’ll wait until it’s all finished (like with my previous novel, CAMPAIGN WIDOWS), it mostly depends on how tight the deadline is! She’s incredible and I’m so grateful for her close eye and the time she spends doing this for me. Since she enjoys the same books/films/stories/genres as I do, I know that if there’s something in my novel that isn’t working for her then it’s not going to work for any reader! She’s the best! If you’re reading this: Hi, sis!
Q: What inspired you to write The Summer Set?
A: I’ve always loved the film/TV/theater/music universe. I started out writing for entertainment magazines—Us Weekly, Premiere—and those jobs were incredible and offered me this amazing glimpse into that celebrity world with all of its ups and downs and drama and excitement. I’m an arts girl so I think there’s something magical about the way a great show, whether on stage or screen, can transport you or connect with you or seem to understand you. And I think the people who are able to bring those stories to life are fascinating!
Q: What projects are you currently working on?
A: I’m (slooooowly) at work on the next novel! It’s in those early stages but it’s an idea I’ve had for a long time so I’m excited! Wish me luck!!
Q: What’s your favorite genre?
A: Oooh, that’s tough! I actually will read anything and everything! For me, it just depends on the story. I’m always on board for great writing and the kind of storytelling that keeps me hooked and turning pages!
Q: Who is your favorite author?
A: I could never choose just one! I grew up on the classics (Austen, the Brontes, Hemingway, Salinger, on and on!) and I adore them so much and revisit them often like checking in on old friends! As for contemporary authors, I love Tom Perrotta, Nick Hornby, Emma Straub, Dave Eggers, Elizabeth Gilbert, to name a few! There are so many that I love and admire!
Q: What are your top 3 favorite books of all time
A: Oh man, this is REALLY tough because there are just soooo many. But I’ll go with these:
--Pride and Prejudice: I could read this every day! I’m completely Jane Austen-obsessed so I actually feel that way about all of her books. Even now, I’m thinking: should I choose Emma?! Or Persuasion?! How do you choose?!
--The Catcher in the Rye: I love everything Salinger. But Holden Caulfield was my first literary crush!
--A Moveable Feast: I also love everything Hemingway but I’ll go with this one because I’m pretty sure I belong in Paris in the ‘20s. (Aside from my very bad French.)
Q: How do you decide what kind of journey you want your characters to go on?
A: That’s a fantastic, huge question! Those first flashes I always have of a novel are of the main character in some sort of inner turmoil. So I tend to know the reason I’m going to be telling their story in the first place, but figuring out how to show it all and get from point A to B to C, takes a lot of mapping out!
Q: Would you ever write YA fantasy novels again?
A: I love this question! Absolutely, if the right story sparked! I had so much fun writing the Gilded Wings Trilogy, I miss those characters and still think of them and what adventures they might still be having! And I do miss writing magic and superpowers, it was always exciting to get to dream up those elements. So, you never know, I might just have to get back to that! ;)

Yui, Rumi, Roxy, and their fathers sat down together to discuss the clue that Muki had left behind.
“‘The garden where it all happened.’ What does that mean?” Yui said.
“Your mother and I visited a lot of gardens before she had you. But where it all happened? That doesn’t make any sense,” Xemnas said.
“Does she also mean my mom as well?” Rumi asked.
“I’m not sure. She didn’t say anything about Aunt Elena,” Yui said. They all pondered for a moment until Xemnas got an idea.
“I think I know which garden she’s talking about,” he said.
~Le Flashback~
Xemnas was walking around in a garden that was in Hollow Bastion. He heard that there was a Heartless signing there so he went to go check it out. While he was there, he heard something snap and turned in that direction. He summoned his ethereal blades and walked over to where the snap happened but before he could he was attacked. But it wasn’t by a Heartless. No, it was a woman. She had a wolf made of fire as her guardian along with two guns. The two of them broke out in a fight and pretty soon the woman pinned Xemnas down with her body.
“What the hell are you?” he asked. The woman didn’t say anything but she got off of him which surprised him. He sat up and looked at the woman.
“Aren’t you gonna kill me?” he asked. The woman looked at him confused and shook her head.
‘At least she understands what I’m saying,’ he said in his head. “Do you have a name?” The woman nodded and tried to speak but no words came out.
“Huh?” he asked. He walked over to the woman and examined her. There wasn’t any severe injuries. So why couldn’t she speak? He stood up and held out his hand.
“Come with me. I’ll help you get your voice back and keep you safe from Heartless,” he said. The woman thought about it and took his hand.
~Flashback Over~
The girls and their fathers arrived at the garden that Xemnas had remembered and started searching for Muki. They searched and searched but there was no sign of her anywhere. Just as they were about to leave, Rumi and Ansem were suddenly pulled into a Dark Corridor.
“Don’t worry. They’ll be fine.” Xemnas and the twins looked over and saw Muki standing there.
“Now then, let’s do some catch up,” she said.

In a starry sky, magic swirled around to the sounds of an orchestra as Mickey Mouse, dressed in a robe and pointed hat, stood atop a tall piece of rock. He waved his arms around, directing the path of shooting stars. Sora walked in to the rocky landscape, watching him.
“Whoa!” he said. Mickey sent up huge waves of water on either side of him. A large thundercloud appeared with a crash and the Spellican came roaring out towards Sora. He readied his Keyblade, but the Spellican knocked him out. Sora woke up in a Mysterious Tower.
“Is this--am I back at Master Yen Sid's tower?” he asked as he looked around. “Something seems off.” He saw Mickey, still in robe and hat, sitting on Yen Sid's tall chair waving his fingers around as if conducting. A dark aura swirled around him as if in a trance.
“King Mickey!” he said. The mouse was unable to respond. Sora saw a music stand with notes spinning around it, pulsing with dark energy.
“Is this what's troubling him?” he asked as he summoned his Keyblade. “All right...” He struck the music stand, which blew him backwards. The Keyblade clattered to the floor followed by Sora, who sat up and rubbed his head.
“Gosh, is that a Keyblade? Who are you an apprentice to?” Mickey asked. Sora heard Mickey's voice and looked from his Keyblade to Mickey, who was still sitting entranced.
“I'm Mickey, the sorcerer's apprentice.”
“Apprentice? Wait--am I in some world where the king was still in training? So does that mean this world is sleeping?” Sora asked.
“What's wrong?”
“What? Oh, uh, I'm Sora--the, uh, 'prentice of...umm... Hey, listen, Your Maj-- ...I gotta stop that. Mickey--what can I do to save you?”
“Thank you, Sora, but it's no use. A monster's possessed that music. And he's releasing darkness that stops anybody from going in there to fight him. To dispel the darkness, we need a Sound Idea.”
“It's that Dream Eater I let escape.” Sora walked over to the sleeping Mickey. “Okay. Where do I get a ‘Sound Idea’?”
“What? You'll find one for me?” Mickey asked.
“Of course!”
“Thank you.”
“It's not every day I get to do a favor for the king.”
“Huh? Did ya say something?”
“Oh, nothing. Long story. So what exactly is a Sound Idea?”
“Hmm...” Another music stand swirling with purple notes appeared in a burst of light.
“Inside this musical score should be a power that can sweep away any darkness. But you gotta be careful. In between those clefs and notes are monsters--not as strong as the big one, but still pretty strong,” Mickey said. The score sheet flashed with darkness for a split second.
“Got it,” Sora said. Meanwhile, Riku walked into the Mysterious Tower where a torrent of water was flowing down the stairs.
“A flood? Strange... It's coming from upstairs,” he said. He ran up the stairs into Yen Sid's chamber, which was filling up with gallons of water. He saw someone in Yen Sid's chair.
“Mickey!” he said. Mickey looked to be in a trance as his fingers dance in the air, the dark aura coming off of him. Riku saw the enchanted music stand and walked over to it.
“It's this musical score. It has him trapped,” he said as he got out his Keyblade.
“You won't be able to defeat that darkness with brute force. I'm Mickey, the sorcerer's apprentice. Who are you?” Riku walked over to Mickey, who was still in a dream. Riku was unsure where to look.
“Riku.” He dispelled his weapon. “If brute force won't work, tell me what will.”
“Do ya really mean you're gonna try and help me?”Mickey asked.
“Yes.”
“Gosh, Riku, something tells me you and I are gonna be good friends, and we'll help each other out a lot someday.” Another music stand appeared with swirling blue notes.
“Inside this music is a Sound Idea powerful enough to dispel the darkness. Can ya find it?” Mickey said.
“I'll try. Leave it to me,” Riku said.
~Back To Sora~
Sora entered the musical realm with the power of his Keyblade. He was soon surrounded by a beautiful Pastoral Symphony as he walked among the clouds, through a glen, and past the stormy fields until he found the Sound Idea at the top of a hill overlooking the sunrise.
“So easily you sink into the depths of slumber,” someone said. Sora turned to see the silver-haired youth walking toward him
“Why are you here?” he asked as he readied his Keyblade. The young man turned and flower petals floated past him in the air.
“Beautiful world, isn't it? Almost like a dream,” he said.
“Why are you following me around?” Sora asked.
“You really haven't caught on? Or are you just assuming it's all part of your little "test"? I'm not part of the dream. And if you thought I was...” The man caught a petal and crushed it. “...then you're softer than they say.”
“What?”
“But...this will all be over soon.” The man started to leave.
“Just who are you people?”
“Sleep on and we will meet again.”
“Hey! What did you do to (Y/N)?”
“Don’t worry. She’s in good hands.” And with that, the man was gone.
“What does he mean by that?” Sora asked. The Sound Idea flashed with light and floated over to Sora who gained its power. Meanwhile, Riku entered the musical realm with the power of the Keyblade. The Nutcracker Suite filled the air as he walked through woods of moonlight, gold, and gleaming snow until he found the Sound Idea. It floated over to him and he took it. Suddenly, the world turned black and Riku found himself near a bald mountain. Spirits of the dead swirled around the rocky peak. Riku flew to the summit, where he found the silver-haired youth near the edge of the volcano. The boy smiled and Riku landed nearby.
“You waiting for me?” Riku asked.
“Yes. The boy chosen by the Keyblade--Riku.”
“What?”
“It was yours first, wasn't it? But you succumbed to the darkness you could not control, and your prize--the Keyblade--passed onto Sora instead. Your mistakes always end up being other people's problems.”
“Maybe so. But I'm here to change all of that.”
“Once again you performed predictably, although on a grander scale than I imagined.”
“If you're feeling so chatty, let's skip to where you reveal what this is all about.” The boy looked to him with unflinching eyes as a burst of fire erupted from the crater behind him.
“I don't know how you did it, but you really have found a way to trap darkness inside your heart. And a boy who's immune to darkness is of no use to us,” he said.
“Well, there's some good news.”
“Your abyss awaits.” The volcano erupted and the young man vanished as smoke filled the area. The great demon Chernabog emerged from the depths of the mountain, black as night with two enormous wings. It roared as a dark melody fills the air. It bared its fangs down at Riku, the sulfur smell burning his nose. Riku sent a spinning tackle into the beast, who roared and sent him flying back across the valley. Pillars of fire erupted from the lava river below, but Riku dodged as Chernabog sent the spirits of the dead to attack him. They latched onto him as he flew toward the evil god, draining his strength away. He managed to spin in the air, kicking them off, as he neared Chernabog again. He mustered up all his might into a final strike to the heart. Meanwhile, Sora returned to the Chamber and released the Sound Idea.
“Thank you, Sora. I can tell you found us a Sound Idea. Well, I guess we should try and put it to work,” Mickey said. Sora nodded, summoning his Keyblade. He swung the blade as if conducting music. The Sound Idea glowed brightly and swirls of musical score burst out of it, drawing into the enchanted music stand.
“That's strange... Is one Sound Idea not enough?” Mickey asked.
“Don't worry. I've got a friend out there who will help. He's always picking up the slack for me.” Meanwhile, Riku returned to the chamber.
“Thank you, Riku. Say, can we try out that Sound Idea?” Mickey said. Riku released it and it floated in the air. Riku got out his Keyblade and began conducting. Music score swirled out in all directions, but he saw no change in the enchanted music stand. Suddenly, a second Sound Idea appeared and the two danced in the air, sending their musical score in all directions as Sora conducted. Music had now filled the room.
“Wow! The sounds are all joining together to make even more powerful music!” Mickey said. The musical score unlocked the enchanted music stand and the dark aura disappeared.
“Yeah. Two forces are better than one. Right, Riku?” Sora said as he walked up to the music stand, which was swirling with red notes. “ Okay. Can I get in there to fight that thing now?”
“Yes. But Sora--” Mickey said.
“I'll be fine! See ya in a jiff.” Sora entered the final musical realm with his Keyblade. Thunderclouds appeared and he found himself on a tall precipice. The Spellican flew through the starry sky and laughed. Sora caught up to the Spellican and defeated it. Mickey hopped back into his body and woke up, stretching. He chuckled happily until noticing the hat on his head. He set it back down on the table and walked over to Sora.
“Thanks, Sora! Don't know what I woulda done without ya!” he said and they shook hands.
“Oh no! The water! I'm in big trouble if I don't fetch it!” Mickey said. He ran to the door carrying buckets, but stopped and turned to Sora. “See ya real soon, Sora!”
“Yeah. You know it.” Mickey left, the old door creaking behind him. A Keyhole appeared and Sora sealed it. Riku looked around and the flood was gone. Mickey woke up and checked himself out.
“That was amazing! What happened?” he said.
“Sora,” Riku said.
“Sora? Funny... Just hearing that name kinda makes me wanna smile.”
“Yeah. That's how he is.”
“Whaddaya know... Riku and Sora. The Sound Ideas you two set free joined together. And when they did, they made a great and powerful harmony.” Riku nodded.
“Sora can find the brightest part of anything, and pull off miracles like there's nothing to it. It's pretty hard not to smile around him,” he said.
“Wow! No wonder the music sounded like so much fun. But I bet he's got you to thank for that. Having such a good friend means he could really enjoy it.”
“Huh?”
“It's like each of you is holding on to a little part of the other. Your hearts are always in tune, so they're free to sing. Gosh, I hope I can be part of the team someday.” The two of them shook hands.
“You will. Trust me,” Riku said. Mickey giggled. Later, a Keyhole appeared and Riku sealed it.
~~~~
“So, you want to know what happened to me and Elena?” Muki asked.
“Yes,” Xemnas and the twins said.
“Alright then. But this won’t get you any closer to saving me or that pathetic (Y/N).”
“We don’t care right now. We just want to know what happened to you and why you stayed away for this long,” Yui said.
“Fine. Here’s what happened. Remember that Heartless that killed me?” Xemnas and the twins nodded. “Well, turns out it wasn’t a Heartless. That was a Negaverse. And you would think that Negaverses don’t have a master. But they do.”
“And who is this master?” Xemnas asked.
“Xehanort.” Xemnas and the twins gasped in shock.
“Oh yes. Xehanort has been controlling the Negaverses since (Y/N) was born.”
“But haven’t the Negaverses existed before Xehanort came into the picture?” Roxy asked.
“Correct you are, my little flame. Since (Y/N) is the Spirit of Light, and Xehanort’s daughter, that means that the Negaverses are under his control.”
“Does that mean...?” Yui asked.
“Yep! Xehanort’s planning to put a Negaverse inside poor little (Y/N). Her light is too powerful, so we need to bring it down a peg.”
“We’re not gonna let that happen!” Xemnas said.
“We’ll see about that.” Muki opened a Dark Corridor and walked through it, leaving Xemnas and the twins scared for your life.
