Chicago (2002)
🎤🎷🎶
Directed by Rob Marshall in his directorial debut, this film adaptation of the hit 1975 Broadway stage musical is packed with themes of fame and scandal.
The plot is centered on housewife Roxie Hart and nightclub performer Velma Kelly who find themselves on death row. In order to avoid the gallows, they both fight to earn a shot at stardom.
A fabulous ensemble cast includes: Renée Zellweger as Roxie, Catherine Zeta-Jones (whose show-stopping performance won her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress) as Velma, Richard Gere as media-savvy yet charismatic defense attorney Billy Flynn, Queen Latifah as the shrewd Matron “Mama” Morton, John C. Reilly as Roxie’s simple-minded husband Amos, Christine Baranski as sensationalist reporter Mary Sunshine, Taye Diggs as the Bandleader, Colm Feore as district attorney Martin Harrison, Lucy Liu as heiress Kitty Baxter and Dominic West as Roxie’s beau Fred Casely.
Each cast member (with the exception of Colm Feore, Lucy Liu and Dominic West, respectively) does their own singing for songs such as: “Overture/All That Jazz”, “Funny Honey”, “When You’re Good to Mama”, “Cell Block Tango” (where several female prisoners, including Velma, rhythmically describe their part in the murder of the men in their past lives), “All I Care About”, “We Both Reached for the Gun”, “Roxie”, “I Can’t Do It Alone”, “Mister Cellophane”, “Razzle Dazzle”, “A Tap Dance”, “Nowadays” and “Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag”. Those songs, originally from the Broadway version, represent the mood of a swinging/violent setting.
Nearly every musical number is part of this huge vaudeville act that would occur in the imagination of a would-be megastar, which in turn demonstrates the difference between reaching for the stars and facing the music. This impeccable technique of combining “reality” with a burlesque fantasy of the main protagonist (Roxie Hart to be exact) won an Oscar for Best Film Editing.
The story takes place in 1920s Chicago during a stimulating period known as the Jazz Age. Thanks to filmmaker Rob Marshall’s background as a theater director, this movie is designed to replicate the glamor and brutality of a particular city in the Roaring Twenties. Such radiant detail won the film an Oscar for Best Production Design (formerly known as Best Art Direction).
The costumes (which won an Oscar in that category) add an extra splash of color and snazzy texture to the movie. Billy Flynn mostly wears sharp lawyerly threads. Roxie wears delicate clothing in actuality, whereas her wardrobe is all sparkly in the tuneful fantasy sequences. Velma is shown wearing provocative clothes, especially fishnets. Every outfit (by design) reflects the legality, ferocity and sensuality of the story.
This particular musical explores the dark side of first-wave feminism in the early 20th century. Roxie and Velma each commit a murder to an unfaithful man who has taken advantage of them. Since both female inmates have no redeeming qualities, one is determined to outshine the other. Along the way, Roxie and Velma gradually come to realize that a solo act is not enough.
Hence the significance of the story: in a world where crime makes the headlines, only a good show can get people off the hook. I certainly recommend this toe-tapping Best Picture Oscar winner to every fan of Broadway-style musicals.

14. Steel Cage Match for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship Match: Sting (champion) defeated The Black Scorpion.
My Review
The 1990 edition of Starrcade is an outright bad show. Amusingly bad, yes, but it’s still a pretty resounding failure. The cherry on the shit sundae, of course, is The Black Scorpion, one of WCW’s most infamous creative blunders. The storyline leading up to Starrcade was a lot of pulpy early ‘90s hokum⏤a mystery man, who may also be some sort of wizard, haunts world champion Sting for months with a groggy voice provided none other than Ole Anderson. It was completely ridiculous and demanded an equally ridiculous payoff.
What makes it suck so bad, however, is that not only is the reveal underwhelming, but it’s also boring. The Scorpion, first and foremost, is dressed like a masked jobber on an episode of WWF Superstars. Then it’s revealed the Scorpion is Ric Flair, the same man who Sting had already faced off with a billion times in the past two years. It’s admittedly interesting watching Flair try to completely abandon his style to play a new character, but the match itself is a by-the-numbers chore. Oh, and Dick the Bruiser is here as a terrible special guest ref who adds completely nothing. At least the Scorpion has the decency to enter the Kiel Auditorium through a spaceship that looks like your grandmother’s antique lamp.
But that’s not all, folks! We’re also treated to the Pat O’Connor Memorial Tag Team Tournament, featuring teams from all over the world. A noble ideal, but the talent pool is, um, underwhelming to say the least. For example, we get wrestlers billed from “South Africa” who clearly aren’t from that country. Not that it winds up mattering anyway, because the whole point is for the Americans to beat them all. The matches are also hindered by some blown finishes that really kill the mood. It’s just a series of missed opportunities that could’ve been much a cooler concept if they’d thought more outside the box than “Welp, America wins LOL!”
It should be noted this is the second out of four consecutive tournaments WCW would book for their biggest show of the year. This is firmly ensconced in the era where the booking for Starrcade started to get a little wonky, anyway. I’m not sure how much of it had to do with them trying to distance themselves from the NWA name as much as possible or what, but it took away from Starrcade’s standing as a marquee show. It says a lot about this time period for WCW⏤constantly throwing one gimmick out there after another in hopes something would eventually stick.
It’s kinda sad, because it’s clear they didn’t need to go so far out of their way to establish their own identity. So many pieces of the puzzle are present in this show, from the production to the roster. It’s when they work overtime in competing with the WWF that things falls apart, a mistake they’d go on to repeat several times over. Collision Course is a fitting tagline for Starrcade ’90, and I’m not talking about the tag tournament. The show is a hodgepodge of half-baked ideas and, like any collision, the result is a mess.
My Random Notes
Apologies for the blurry quality of the poster above. It’s practically the best version I can find right now. Cut a queen some slack in the midst of pandemic, eh?
A few production notes: 1.) Why is the WCW logo on the entrance way always crooked? 2.) I love the blue and yellow ring apron, but the red and yellow ropes are a weird fit. 3.) We’re treated throughout the broadcast with Starrcade Stats, a cheeseball yet time-period appropriate concept giving us trading card details on each of the night’s competitors. For example, the Z-Man does a missile dropkick “if possible.”
Spot of the night goes to Col. DeKlerk who damns it all and hits one of most ill-conceived front flips of all time, which causes Rick Steiner to visibly corpse on camera.
Laugh at Team Russia all you want, but they absolutely would be at a singlet party in Provincetown during Bear Week if it were 2020.
I’m pretty supportive of having filler matches on pay-per-views, but what the hell was even the point of that Skyscrapers squash? Did they forget to book it on WCW Saturday Night and need to make up the minutes?
We get our first taste of the highly acclaimed commentary duo of JR/Paul Heyman. It’s a slightly awkward first outing. Heyman isn’t really the Heyman we’d come to know yet so he sometimes comes off as a second-rate Bobby Heenan. He tries making a joke that the Midnight Express broke up due to Yoko Ono, which is every bit as painful as it sounds.
You mean to tell me the best Canadian wrestlers they could find were Troy Montour and Danny Johnson, whom I’m not even sure are actual wrestlers?
This should go without saying, but the Fabulous Freebirds and their fetishization of the Confederate flag is, um, a huge amount of yikes in a 2020 context. I don’t know a whole lot about about the point of them having Little Richard Marley as their sidekick, but I don’t think I want to know.
As with the dawn of any new decade, the ‘80s were still alive in 1990 and you need to look no further than the Dynasty extras they put on this show as the flag-bearers, with hair almost as tall as those big ass stars on the entrance way.
This, amazingly, marks the first time I’ve seen Rey Misterio Sr. (or Rey Misteric, as he’s referred to in the Starrcade graphics). I’ve honestly never even Googled his name to see what he looks like. It does seem like his nephew has a much better handle on the high-flying maneuvers. He inexplicably launches himself over the top rope after his Round 1 match is over. I’m sure it made Col. DeKlerk proud.

At the bloody horror that is Bolton Greens, a teen rises from beneath a pile of dead bodies…
In small and festive town of Helvetia, a strangely dressed robot realizes it has new dreams…
And in a place that we shall not yet name, Clarissa Kubrick draws her gun…
Meanwhile, back at Whitespring…
Voice of Robot Carla from Cheers: “Wasteland RP is filmed before a live studio audience.”
A roll of thunder in the distance became the echoing footsteps of the Enclave officers, in service of Empress Von Killchild. A circus of hooligans strode beside them, gathered by Von Killchild to fight alongside the Enclave as she spread her influence across the wasteland.
Tannin watched through freshly polished lenses as Officer Shoshana Pai strode at the lead, tightly uniformed. Von Killchild’s empire had see impossible victories as it spread across the lands, but with every victory came madness, and even from this distance, Tanen could see the madness spreading behind Shoshana’s face.
Shoshauna Pai has tried growing her hair in the atom bomb style of her Empress and Queen, but Von Killchild had taken offense, and burned Shoshana’s mushroom cloud off, right there on the spot.
The two uniformed officers just behind her were clearly feeling the intensity as well. One was older, smiling over gritting teeth. The other was younger, and appeared to be on a constant state of shock and terror.
But the slender man in the top hat, wearing red, was feeling none of that stress at all. He grinned a dark grin, as he reassured the lead officer about a situation Tanen could not hear the details of.
A man with a suit made American flags walked behind them, hands deep in his pockets. From the patriotic collar of that suit rose, snake-like, a head covered in black metal-threaded fabric, a marine tactical mask. His face had no mouth, and was featureless, but for the dark, reflective eyes, black-mirrored like crude oil.
The Patriot was whispering to a clown walking alongside them. As threatening and insane as this clown clearly was, he too was radiating calm, undisturbed by whatever situation was bothering the uniformed.
None of them bothered turning to even glance at Tannin as they strode past. None save the last, the one lurking furthest behind…
Dario Morton, alias Dario The Ghoulish…
The Ghoulish One’s mask was a massive twist of iron, beset with round, blood-red glass eyes that glared at Tannin like hot stars. His words arose from within the mask’s gaping grimace like a dead man rising from the grave.
Dario stared at the robot, stared into him… and then finally spoke.
“I have often wondered at the depths of the robot mind,” said Dario, “and I am wondering now at the depths of yours…” Dario’s arms hung limply at his side. “I feel that you might be hiding something from us, Tannin. Some secret… Do you hide it from Empress Von Killchild as well?”
Tannin spoke. “Security is our top priority.”
And Dario replied. “…indeed. Indeed… Perhaps I should drink with you sometime, Tannin. Perhaps I should drink with you at your bar, instead of alone, as I so often do. The things you and I have both seen over the years.... You and I have much to discuss, I imagine.”
Dario stared for long moment more... then turned as if on an axis, and continued after the rest of the Von Killchild’s servants, who were already descending the stairs ahead.
Tannin returned to his default position, removed a bottle of bourbon from below the bar, and started to pour.
A woman in a trench coat burst up beside him, like a molerat bursting from it’s hole.
Her eyes were bright, her mustache was fake, her sleeves went well past her hands, and she was ready to drink.
Her name was Jamie Spano.
“Holy crap, that was close,”
Tannin handed Jamie her glass, and a sudden confused scream rang out as a man she had just met that morning came tumbling from above the bar. He crashed hard into the ground, like he was his own Three Stooges movie.
“Balls!” the man shouted as he flailed about on the ground, struggling to regain his feet.
And once those feet were regained, so was his dignity, as he radiated that style of impossible charm that only the heavy set middle aged alcoholic can radiate, and asked Tannin for another pour.
“So we were just introducing ourselves when the dark side stormed by,” said Jamie.
“Yes, indeed Ms Spano.” He shot out his hand to shake hers. “Phoenix McGillicuddy, the Whitespring’s most outstanding and long-lasting human customer. I was here when the bombs went off and kind of faded into the background when the bots started kicking people off the property. Security is constantly trying to kill me, but the wait staff is beyond compare. Tannin and Bubbles are delightful. They mix a mean drink, and they haven’t ratted me out yet, so here I am, living in the walls like, well, like a rat, sort of. But a charming rat, like the kinds who sing, and drink bourbon.”
“All rats drink bourbon, Mister McGillicuddy, but we enjoy you anyways,” called Bubbles, the sassy and spherical, French-accented, lady Nuka-Cola bot running the soda fountain around the corner.
Tannin turned to Jamie. “Welcome to the Whitespring.”
“Thank you very much, Tannin,” Jamie said as she raised her glass, but suddenly they heard another door open, down the hall.
“Who’s that!?” Jamie and Phoenix exclaimed in unison.
To be continued...

We plan on adding a second text-based roleplay setting in the coming weeks - Vault 76 RP. This will be dedicated to our time in Vault 76, and the mysterious events which took place there.

Do tell about your perfect and genius cast list :)
claps hands together
I’M GLAD YOU ASKED
Gotham (1920s): wherein Tim stars as the doe-eyed newcomer to the talent scene, who under his innocent visage has actually murdered a man (Ra’s/Fred Casely*). probably rule 63 for those two, but whatever that’s not important
Tim’s humble hhh...husband? wife? whichever sort of gender you want to imagine everyone as, is Steph, the one who people constantly overlook in both canon and fandom (see: Mister Cellophane)
once Tim goes to jail they’re all welcomed by Matron Mama Morton Bertinelli, because if you don’t think that’s perfect, you need to read Grayson at once
anyway, Tim is quickly snubbed by his idol Jason, who’s in for murdering 2 other outlaws in some twisted love triangle
luckily he can get in contact with ladies-man lawyer Dick Grayson, who can sing him a charming number about how all he cares about is love, then move him like a marionette while intrepid reporters Lois and Clark grill him about why he shot Ra’s (they both reached for the gun!!)
and of course, Razzle Dazzle was MADE for Dick, so anyone who wants to argue for Harvey Dent in his place can SUCK IT
*if you’ve read Batman #71 then this casting changes slightly

S3;E3 ~ September 28, 1970
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Directed by Herbert Kenwith ~ Written by Sam Perrin and Ralph Goodman
Synopsis
When Sammy Davis Jr. stumbles through the door of the Unique Employment Agency and bumps his nose, Lucy and Harry are afraid of being sued. Lucy goes to his film set to make sure he is alright and ends up causing chaos.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carter), Gale Gordon (Harrison Otis Carter), Desi Arnaz Jr. (Craig Carter), Lucie Arnaz (Kim Carter)
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Sammy Davis Jr. (Himself) was born in 1925 in Harlem, New York.  Davis was a singer, dancer, actor and comedian noted for his impressions of actors, musicians and other celebrities.  Davis's film career began as a child in 1933. In 1960, he appeared in the Rat Pack film Ocean's 11. After a starring role on Broadway in Mr Wonderful (1956), he returned to the stage in 1964's Golden Boy.  In 1966 he had his own TV variety show, titled “The Sammy Davis Jr. Show.” He became a star in Las Vegas, earning him the nickname "Mister Show Business." Although this is the only time he acted with Lucille Ball, he subsequently appeared on many award shows and specials, some of them celebrating Lucille Ball herself.  He died of throat cancer in 1990.
Tumblr media
Irwin Charone (Chester P. Franklin) made five appearances on “The Lucy Show.” The expressive character actor also did an equal number of “Here’s Lucy” episodes. He died in January 2016 in Maplewood, New Jersey, at the age of 93.
Mr. Franklin is a next door neighbor of the Carters.
Tumblr media
Steve March (Electric Guitar Player at Craig and Kim's Party) is the son of Mel Torme and the adopted son of the Arnaz family’s friend, Hal March. Mel Torme appeared several times on “The Lucy Show.”  Hal March appeared on “I Love Lucy.”  Steve March appear in “Lucy and the Bogie Affair” (S2;E13) and wrote the song “Country Magic” for “Lucy and Ann-Margret” (S2;E20).
Tumblr media
Keith Taylor (Fat Boy at Craig and Kim's Party) was a child actor whose career began in 1960 playing Harry Harrison on TV's “Leave it to Beaver.”  He also played Tubby on eleven episodes of “McKeever & the Colonel” (1962-63).  His last screen credit was in 1987.
The character has no lines but takes all the sandwiches off Lucy's tray.
Jay Dee Witney (Boy at Craig and Kim's Party, uncredited) was the son of director William Witney, and as such appeared on such shows as “Hondo” (1967) and “Bonanza” (1966).  This is his only time working with Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
Gary Morton ('Night Club Manager') was a comedian who worked the famed ‘Borscht Belt’ in the Catskills Mountains. He met Lucille Ball shortly after her divorce from Desi Arnaz and they married in November 1961. At her request, Morton gave up his nightclub career and became a producer of “The Lucy Show.” Morton also served as a warm-up comic for the show’s studio audience. He played the Emcee in “Lucy and the Andrews Sisters” (S2;E6) and will make one more on-camera appearances on “Here’s Lucy.” Morton passed away in 1999.
Tumblr media
Elliott Reid (Otto, Film Director) played Edward Warren, a parody of Edward R. Murrow, in “The Ricardos Are Interviewed” (ILL S5;E7) and appeared in two episodes of “The Lucy Show.”  This is the second of his three appearances on “Here’s Lucy.”
In addition to being the director, Otto is also the producer, and financial backer of the film.  Reid plays the character with a German accent.
Joe Jackson (Script Boy) has only three other screen credits, according to IMDb.
Jack Berle ('Audience Member,' uncredited) was the older brother of Milton Berle.  This is just one of his eleven uncredited appearances on the series.  He also did two episodes of “The Lucy Show.”
Eugene Jackson ('Audience Member,' uncredited) gained fame as Farina's older brother, Pineapple, in six of Hal Roach's "Our Gang" serials (1924-25).  He appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1963 film Critic's Choice as well as an episode of “The Lucy Show.”  With Sammy Davis Jr. he was an uncredited extra in the 1964 film Robin and the Seven Hoods. He will be seen in one more episode of “Here's Lucy” guest-starring Ginger Rogers.
The other teenagers at Kim and Craig's party, Sammy Davis' musicians, and the Actors playing the Audience Members during the film shoot are all played by uncredited background performers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although writers Perrin and Goodman did the original draft of the script, script supervisor Milt Josefsberg substantially revised it.
Tumblr media
Buddy Hackett had a cameo in this episode but his part was cut from the final episode.
Tumblr media
The day after this episode first aired (Monday, September 28, 1970) actor Edward Everett Horton died.  Horton and Lucille Ball had appeared in three films together before he played the amorous butcher Mr. Ritter on “Lucy Plays Cupid” (ILL S1;E15) in 1952.
Tumblr media
On the series DVD, this episode is introduced by Altovise Davis, Sammy Davis' widow. She speaks glowingly about Davis and Ball being two geniuses. Altovise Davis died in 2009.
Tumblr media
Ironically, Davis’s first wife May Britt was in the audience for the filming of this episode. Britt and Davis had a daughter Tracy (then 9), and adopted two sons: Mark (then 10) and Jeff (then 7). They were also in the audience to watch the show.
Tumblr media
Also in the audience was Will Mastin, Sammy Davis’s “”uncle” and tap dance instructor since childhood, as well as close friend of Sammy Davis Sr. They formed a group named The Will Mastin Trio. He takes a bow from the audience.
Tumblr media
In addition to Lucy’s mother Dede (who attended every filming), actress Patty Duke was in the studio audience. Gary Morton, who did the audience warm-up for the show, asked her to take a bow. At the time, Desi Arnaz Jr. was carrying on a very public affair with recently divorced Duke, something Lucy did not approve of. It is unknown if Desi Jr. was in the audience with her, but it would explain her presence there.
Tumblr media
Lucy says neighborhood grouch Mr. Franklin writes fan letters to Don Rickles. Don Rickles (1926-2017) was an insult comic who appeared as a washed up boxer in “Lucy the Fight Manager” (TLS S5;E20).
Tumblr media
When faced with a lawsuit, Craig tells Mr. Franklin to look up the case of Jones v Dawson 1967.  Lucy immediately assumes her son has been ignoring his homework and watching reruns of “Perry Mason.” Jones v Dawson is a fictional lawsuit.  The surname Dawson has been mentioned several times  throughout the series. “Perry Mason” was a half-hour TV courtroom drama starring Raymond Burt that aired on CBS from 1957 to 1966.  Lucy Carmichael was fond of talking about Perry Mason on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
When Sammy Davis Jr. first comes stumbling into the office, Lucy thinks he is Harry Belafonte, who was considered one of the most successful black pop stars in history for popularizing the Caribbean musical style.  Davis and Belafonte appeared together on several TV musical and variety shows. They were together on the cover of LIFE Magazine (above) in 1965 with actor Sidney Poitier. Lest anyone think that Lucy Carter thinks 'all colored people look alike,' in the past she has also misidentified white celebrities at first sight. It's a character trait more indicative of her scatterbrain personality than racism.
Tumblr media
Lucy offers Sammy the use of the office telephone as repayment for (she sings) “What Kind of Fool Am I?” The song was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and published in 1962. It was introduced by Anthony Newley in the musical Stop The World - I Want To Get Off.  In 1978 Davis starred in a Broadway revival of the musical and also did a television special called “Sammy Stops the World.”  The song was briefly sung by author Anthony Newley in “Lucy in London” (1966, above).  In 1971 Davis recorded another Bricusse / Newley tune, “The Candy Man” from the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It was a number one hit for the singer and is still associated with him today although it was not one of his favorites.
Tumblr media
Sammy telephones his agent Sy Marsh. This was the name of Davis' real-life agent at William Morris who left the agency to be Davis' business partner.
Tumblr media
Sammy says his producer loves to sue and that his favorite words are “Here comes the judge!  Here comes the judge!”  This is a catch-phrase from “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” first spoken by comic Pigmeat Markham and later by Sammy Davis Jr.  The NBC show’s second half hour aired opposite “Here’s Lucy.” The catch-phrase was spoken by Lucy in “Lucy the Conclusion Jumper” (S1;E5, above).
Tumblr media
When Sammy's nose swells to twice its normal size, Lucy makes the inevitable reference to Jimmy Durante (1893-1980).  The vaudeville comedian and singer's trademark was his big nose.  He and his nose were often referred to as 'The Schnozzola.” Although he never appeared on “I Love Lucy,” Lucy dressed up in a Durante mask to fool nearsighted Carolyn Appleby in “Lucy Meets Harpo Marx” (ILL S4;E28, above right).  In “Hollywood at Last!” (ILL S4;E16) Lucy and Ethel see a caricature of Durante on the wall of the Brown Derby that takes up two frames – one for his nose!  The real Jimmy Durante and his wife made a wordless walk-on appearance in “Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere” (TLS S4;E20, above left).
Tumblr media
Setting the scene of the most climactic scene of the film, the Otto the Director tells Sammy that his character is opening with star billing at the Sands Hotel. The Sands Hotel in Las Vegas was the setting for “Lucy Hunts Uranium,” a 1958 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”  The Sands was briefly glimpsed in the Las Vegas strip montage sequence in “Lucy and Wayne Newton” (S2;E22).
In his act, Sammy does vocal impressions of:
Tumblr media
Jimmy Stewart – who shared the dais with Lucille Ball and Davis on many television specials and award shows.
Tumblr media
Jimmy Cagney – using Cagney's most misquoted line, “You dirty rat!”
Tumblr media
Dean Martin – crooning a bit of “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime” which was a number one hit for Martin in 1964, although it was first written in 1948.  Martin had guest-starred as himself (and his stunt double) on “Lucy Dates Dean Martin” (TLS S4;E21) and sang the song in the episode.  Davis mentions that Martin is playing at the Riviera, which is coincidentally part of the plot of “Lucy and Wayne Newton” (S2;E22) which includes a shot of his name on the Riviera's Las Vegas marquee.
Tumblr media
Lucy asks Sammy “What's Frank Sinatra really like?” Although Sinatra never acted with Lucille Ball, the two were off-screen friends.  Along with Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford, Sinatra and Davis were members of what was known as the Hollywood Rat Pack. They all had extensive ties to the Las Vegas showroom circuit and even did motion pictures together.  A clip of Sinatra in the film Guys and Dolls was incorporated into a 1955 episode of “I Love Lucy” where Lucy performs at a showcase for the MGM executives. Due to copyright laws, the clip was cut for syndication and is not included on the DVD.
Tumblr media
Sammy sings “And When I Die” a song written by singer Laura Nyro. It was first recorded by American folk group Peter, Paul and Mary in 1966. Nyro then recorded it on her 1967 debut album More Than a New Discovery. However, the song is probably best known for its third version by rock group Blood, Sweat & Tears, which reached number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became a Gold record.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucy Carter disrupts Sammy Davis' flim shoot just the same way Lucy Carmichael did to John Wayne in “Lucy and John Wayne” (TLS S5;E10).
Tumblr media
Sammy's huge nose recalls Lucy's extended proboscis in “Hollywood at Last!” (ILL S4;E16) although her's was putty.
Tumblr media
Line!  Sammy Davis Jr. stumbles over a few of his lines in the film shoot scene.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Sammy Davis Jr.” rates 3 Paper Hearts out of 5
This is one of those episode where Lucy acts foolish and cries a lot. Davis does his best and there is some funny stuff, but overall the story is more sketch than plot.

Moving into this beautiful old house made me know instantly I wanted to do Christmas a little different this year, not only because both of our families are coming, yep the ‘Forever House’ is going to be a full house, but also because I’ve always dreamed of a creating more floral spreads as I really love adding flowers everywhere, but I always worry how to at Christmas, and always just opt for the poinsettia. So, this year I reached out to the floral masters at The Real Flower Company for some tips and tricks on how to make dress my house this festive season with flowers.
[su_pullquote]”A door wreath is imperative for welcoming anybody to the house at Christmas. I also like to dress my house with lots of seasonal foliage from the garden, our English flower farm and foraged from the hedgerows. Bulbs such as amaryllis and lilies are great for touches of colour and last wonderfully”- Rosebie Morton, The Real Flower Company.[/su_pullquote]
What I love about The Real Flower Company’s Christmas collection is that it isn’t just the traditional red that you normally see during the holidays, there’s an elegance and vintage feel about the floral wreaths and bouquets, which really suits this house, and what I wanted to achieve. I love red, don’t get me wrong, but it can be so overdone at this time of year, which is why the Woodland Antique collection is so refreshing and inviting, filled with scented antique, blush pink roses and woodland inspired foliage of thistles, pussy willow, and birch twigs.
Seriously, how beautiful does this look, and it still looks festive thanks to the foliage alongside the delicate flowers, which I wish you guys could smell as it really is divine, and I love that this will be the first thing my guests smell and see when they enter the house.
The first thing I noticed was the quality and care that went into making it, Rosebie told me it takes 30 -45 minutes for her florists to put something like this together, I’d love to try and make my own next year.
Seeing how beautiful the wreath is I have to be honest I was a little worried about how to maintain it through to Christmas, so I asked Rosebie what her must-have tips are:
Leave decorating with flowers and foliage to a couple of weeks before Christmas
Turn the heating down and use a water mister
Where possible keep fresh flowers and foliage away from radiators, fireplaces and sunny windowsills
Need inspiration on which Christmas wreath to go for from The Real Flower Company’s collection?
[su_quote]I love herbs and berries so this year I’ll be hanging our Berry, Herb and Foliage door wreath on my door. It’s hard to pick a favourite but I love the rich berry tones of our Christmas posy and Antique and Plum flower tube arrangement – Rosebie Morton[/su_quote]
One Christmas flower wreath, two ways
Thinking that this is too beautiful to just be outside, well, this wreath can also be a table decoration, so I thought I’d give you a sneak previous of my elegant Christmas table plans. I’m keeping it quite minimal and for me not as a traditionally festive, I really want the floral display with a column candle as the centrepiece, and I love how the Paul Richard, the pale pink rose, and the Kenyan Sweet antike rose really complement my vintage dinner set. Also, having a table wreath means that it is low, so you’ll be able to see your family around the table.
For a few festive touches, I’ve added Christmas tree and stars around the table, with each place setting having a wooden decoration. I picked these up in TK Maxx, I love that place for quirky touches to add to my dinner table, and I love how they work with the marble tree and star, which kind of look like coaster but are actually decorations but they are so heavy no tree would ever take them!!!
I also have a bouquet made up in the same Woodland Antique theme as the wreath to add more colour to the table. I’ve taken out a few of the flowers into little vases to just create a gorgeous train of foliage down the centre of the table, which is highlighted by a few twigs snipped off the bottom of our Christmas tree. The whole set up with the modern Sophie Conran cutlery and the exquisite Waterford crystal glasses just makes for a beautiful, fresh and elegant Christmas table. All it needs is a turkey.
Adding flowers throughout the house
One of the things I love about decadent houses at Christmas, you know the ones I mean, those National Trust houses, is always the incredible fireplaces, and this year I finally have not one, but two to decorate, so I asked Rosebie how to use fresh foliage to create a beautiful festive display.
[su_quote]Don’t start too early but foraging for greenery is a wonderful way to create a striking fireplace display. Yew, box and fir give a traditional feel. I also love using, berried ivy, silvery eucalyptus and Viburnum Tinus from my garden as it’s rich dark foliage always looks strikingly festive. Start in the centre, using the largest pieces of foliage first, trailing ivy works well as a base. Work out to each side, criss crossing the stems. Layer in rosehips and berries to add colour and texture and fill in the gaps[/su_quote]
I promise as soon as I finish doing my fireplaces I will share on Instagram.
Are you loving this gorgeous flower wreath as much as me?
**Thanks for The Real Flower Company for working with me on this piece and sending me this beautiful wreath and bouquet, but as you guys know, all opinions are my own – I just wish you could smell these beauties**

Five Stars This is an important history of ragtime music! Go to Amazon
They All Played Ragtime Fabulous book! Couldn't put it down. A must for any lover of ragtime music and wants to know the history. Go to Amazon
THE ragtime book. I've been searching for this book for a long time, and was delighted to be able to obtain a first edition copy of it through Amazon sellers. This is the first published attempt at a full history of the music of the Ragtime era, roughly 1890 - 1920, and that alone would make it of historical importance. There have been a number of similar histories since, but none quite like this one. Go to Amazon
Let's Get the Names Right It's difficult to understand how a publisher cannot get the authors' names correct. The authors are Rudi (not "Ridi") Blesh AND Harriet Janis; Blesh was always insistent that Janis receive equal credit. Go to Amazon
Requirements This title, along w/Father of the Blues: An Autobiography of W.C. Handy(William Christopher Handy); Treat It Gentle: An Autobiography of Sidney Bechet (Sidney Bechet); Mister Jelly Roll: The Fortunes of Jelly Roll Morton et al (Ferdinand Lamonthe and Alan Lomax); Music is My Mistress: The Autobiography of Duke Ellington (Edward Kennedy Ellington); Satchmo: The Autobiography of Louis Armstrong (Louis Armstrong); Eubie Blake (James Hubert Blake and Alan Rose); and Danny Barker's writings are essential towards the understanding of American music...and history. Official Press Notes
Three decades after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard, a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
The film stars Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling (“La La Land”) as K, and Harrison Ford (the “Star Wars” films, “Witness”), reprising the role of Rick Deckard. The main international cast also includes Ana de Armas (“War Dogs”), Sylvia Hoeks (“Renegades”), Robin Wright (“Wonder Woman”), Mackenzie Davis (“The Martian”), Carla Juri (“Brimstone”), and Lennie James (“The Walking Dead”), with Dave Bautista (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films) and Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”).
In “Blade Runner 2049,” K is sent on an assignment that, for very different reasons, could have more far-reaching consequences—calling into doubt the divide between people and replicants, between humanity and technology, which could lead to anarchy or even war.  But “Blade Runner” did more than blur the lines between humans and technology. It also broached a range of societal concerns that have grown ever-more prevalent. And with our planet now on the cusp of when that film was set, it seems more revelatory, and more relevant, than ever—foreshadowing issues of urban decay, climate change, genetic engineering, overpopulation, the divides of social and economic strata and more.
TIME LINE
2018 – After a bloody mutiny by a Nexus 6 combat team in an Off-world colony, replicants are declared illegal on Earth—under penalty of death.
2019 – A prototype replicant, Rachael, and Officer Rick Deckard, a Blade Runner, escape Los Angeles together.
2020 – After the death of founder Eldon Tyrell, the Tyrell Corporation rushes a new line of Nexus 8 replicants onto market for use Off-world. Unlike previous Nexus models, built with four-year lifespans, the Nexus 8s have open-ended lifespans, as well as ocular implants for easy identification.
2022 – An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) of unknown origin detonates somewhere in the West Coast. Cities shut down for weeks. Electronic data is corrupted or destroyed over most of the United States. Finance and trade markets crash worldwide. Food supplies become dire. Theories spread as to the cause of the Blackout; none are proven. The most popular ones blame replicants.
2023 – The governing authorities legislate an indefinite “prohibition” on replicant production. Nexus 6 models are now all decommissioned due to their programmed 4-year lifespans. Surviving Nexus 8 models are to be retired. Those that can, go into hiding.
2025 – Idealistic scientist Niander Wallace pioneers advancements in genetically modified food and shares his patents for free, marking an end to a global crisis. His company, Wallace Corporation, E&C, expands across the globe—and into the Off-world colonies.
2028 – Wallace acquires the remains of the bankrupt Tyrell Corporation.
2030  – Wallace upgrades genetic engineering to produce a new model of replicants, biorobotic beings that are more compliant and obedient than their predecessors.
2036 –  Prohibition is repealed. Wallace reintroduces a new line of “perfected” replicants: The Nexus 9.
2040  – The LAPD commits resources to re-establish its Blade Runner unit, tasked with locating illegal replicants…and retiring them.
2049  – We return to Los Angeles, 30 years after the original film.
