Caption and images reposted from #artist @torkwasedyson TYRE D. NICHOLS in @_desertx It’s an honor to learn from these photographs made by this beautiful young brother. The spaciousness in these works are a testimony. I needed a reminder of the existential ocular experiences occurring in ongoing systems of #AntiBlackViolence. Black spatial perception!

TYRE D. NICHOLS
b. Sacramento, CA, 1993
d. Memphis, TN, January 10, 2023
Originals

Born and raised in Sacramento California, Tyre Nichols’ photographs of landscapes, sunsets, monuments and the architectural vernaculars of his adopted town of #Memphis, Tennessee are the unassuming documents of a young man whose eye was drawn to the moments of beauty and evanescence that shape the rituals of daily life. “My vision is to bring my viewers deep into what I am seeing through my eye and out through my lens,” he wrote. “I hope to one day let people see what I see and to hopefully admire my work based on the quality and ideals of my work.”
This work, now celebrated as part of Desert X, represents not just a vision that was brutally
denied the opportunity to develop but the potential of all those individuals whose lives have been lost to the #statesanctionedviolence of #institutionalracism. Sited on billboards along #GeneAutryTrail, Nichols’ work is also a reminder that so many of these needless deaths take place at the side of the road. Here the silent beauty of these levitated images stands in stark contrast with the terror experienced by Nichols and so many others on the shoulder below. But as with the vision the message is also one of hope: hope that with restrictions on pretextual stops California can lead the way in police reform; hope that together we can create a just society in which the fragile and beautiful talents of the likes of Tyre Nichols can flourish and grow.

Repost from: @soyouwanttotalkabout Do what you can... At the very least, try to get to know what is actually going on in the world. I feel so useless at times like these. I mean as a person who wants to see and “...be the change [we] wish to see in the world”. I do know that I am not the only one who wants to see change in this crazy-insane world we’ve been living in. No justice... no peace... Do what you can to see and “...be the change you wish to see in the world.” Original quote by Mahatma Gandhi @soyouwanttotalkabout #palestine #freepalestine #alifelongapartheid #wemustccallattentiontothis #attention #achtung #change #colonialism #apartheid #gaza #statesanctioned #statesanctionedviolence #iwishtherewasmoreicoulddo #tohelp #anyhelpmatters #share https://www.instagram.com/p/CO0YELtHf-X/?igshid=xd86zkvbfo7

BBC: #LiuXiaobo 11-year jail term was handed down in 2009 after he compiled, with other intellectuals, the Charter 08 manifesto. It called for an end to one-party rule and the introduction of multi-party democracy. Mr Liu was found guilty of trying to overthrow the state. He was a pro-democracy figurehead for activists outside mainland China, although many of his compatriots were unaware of his struggles because the authorities rigorously censored news about him. The dissident won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 for his "long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China", but he was not permitted to travel to Norway to accept it. He was the second person to receive the award while in prison - the other was the German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky, who won in 1935 while incarcerated in a Nazi concentration camp. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/40597514 #china #humanrights #liuxiaobo #politicalprisoner #freespeech #democracy #dissident #stateviolence #repression #politicalrepression #prisonhealthcare #statesanctionedviolence #freespeech #nobelprize #riseofchina #dictatorship #tienamensquare #1989 #martyr #censorship #housearrest #legacy #thingstodobefore61 (at Jinzhou, Liaoning, China)

I have only started reading about 9/11 1973, as my break while reading about ESP-PH-US primary encounters, but turned out to have given me the same thing I am avoiding: headache. Not intending to entertain conspiracy theories but somehow history and patterns lead you to the same thought and wonder. –––––––––– Regrann from @wateroximagery - “9/11/1973 - #neverforget - Thousands of people dead and disappeared after the #American #CIA orchestrated a coup d'etat that overthrew a democratically elected #government in #Chile . People were tortured and killed, or sometimes tied up and dropped from airplanes alive. That was one of the few manifestations of US #imperialism that was underway during the #ColdWar . Moreover, the US-sanctioned violence to systematically suppress popular resistance against #military #dictatorships in Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia became known as #OperationCondor , with #HenryKissinger as an ideological guide. What was the overarching goal of these military coup d'etats? To maintain and enforce conditions for the global #capitalist trade. In a context where popular struggles had been leading to significant concessions to the working class, the bourgeoisie employed brutality to keep the capitalist engine active for exploitation and domination. The final outcome: more than 50 thousand dead, 60 thousand people missing and 400 thousand imprisoned. This is the true face of #globalcapitalism ." #USA #SoPoRevolt #911 #911memes #911memorial #September11 #coupdetat #Colonialism #AntiImperialism #AntiCapitalism #History #StateViolence #StateSanctionedViolence #War #AntiWar #WorldPeace #brownlivesmatter https://www.instagram.com/p/BnxiR-0lWbB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1idl6tbmd5t3j

🖤✊🏿#ArtIsAWeapon #Artist Nick Cave "Unarmed," 2018, Sculpture, cast bronze, metal and vintage beaded flowers, Courtesy of the artist and Wendi Norris Gallery, San Francisco. On view as part of "Promise, Witness, Remembrance" until June 6, 2021 at the @speedartmuseum www.speedmuseum.org
Tumblr media
Photo by Xavier Burrell. Reposted from @speedartmuseum Both a memorial to victims of gun violence and a call to action, "Unarmed" features @NickCaveart’s raised hand, cast as if pointing a gun. Following the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in 2014, protesters across the country raised their own hands, adopting the rallying cry “hands up, don’t shoot.” To this day, this gesture of protest unites those who believe that Black lives matter.
• • •
For Cave, these gestures of protest mark a refusal to engage with power on power’s terms, serving as the catalyst for change to radically alter our collective condition and make freedom for all a reality.
• • •
Tragically, less than a week after the opening of "Promise, Witness, Remembrance," we mourn the loss of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, who was shot and killed by a police officer during a routine traffic stop in Minneapolis.

"Marielle Presente," 2020, oil on paper, mixed media on paper, 24inches x 6ft #Artist Gerardo Castro
www.gerardocastroart.com
Reposted from @gcastroart gcastroart Three years after the fatal shooting of the human rights defender and Rio de Janeiro city council woman Marielle Franco, and her driver, Anderson Gomes ... the crime remains unsolved.
On the night of March 14, 2018, as 38 years old... Franco was heading home, a car pulled up alongside hers and an assassin unloaded 9 shots into her vehicle. Four of them hit Franco in the head, killing her immediately - an alarming, brazen, political act of violence. According to investigators, Franco was killed using bullets purchased by the Federal Police in 2006. She was killed not solely because of her race, gender, sexuality, class, or political beliefs but because of all those things combined. For Afro-Brazilians, Franco proved that a Black person from a favela could be educated, have dignity, and also fight against the social injustice that they suffer from every day. For women, she proved that they could overcome sexism and machismo in Brazil. Sunflowers, the symbol of Marielle's campaign, purple the symbol of feminism in Brazil proclaim her royalty. Marielle Franco, her name and her cause cannot be forgotten.
