Contratos futuros do minério de ferro disparam após Evergrande evitar calote

(Reuters) – Os preços de produtos ferrosos e siderúrgicos nas bolsas de futuros de commodities da China subiram nesta quinta-feira, após informações de que o China Evergrande Group (HK:3333) (OTC:EGRNY) havia feito pagamentos aos detentores de títulos, evitando um calote desestabilizador.

As preocupações dos traders sobre o endividado setor imobiliário da China pesaram recentemente sobre os preços do aço e do minério de ferro, que já estavam sob pressão devido à fraca demanda doméstica pelos materiais.

O vergalhão de aço para construção mais negociado para entrega em janeiro na Bolsa de Futuros de Xangai atingiu o limite diário de alta de 8%, antes de encerrar as negociações do dia em alta de 7,4%, a 4.443 iuanes (695,13 dólares) a tonelada, estendendo um rali noturno junto com o minério de ferro.

O minério de ferro mais ativo de janeiro na Bolsa de Commodity de Dalian avançou 6,8%, para 570,50 iuanes por tonelada, recuperando-se da mínima de um ano de quarta-feira.

"Os preços se recuperaram mais tarde na sessão (de quarta-feira), depois que o Evergrande disse ter feito o pagamento de pelo menos dois títulos", disse Daniel Hynes, estrategista sênior de commodities da ANZ.

A bobina laminada a quente subiu 8%.

Outros insumos siderúrgicos também se recuperaram, com o carvão metalúrgico subindo 6,2% e o coque ganhando 6,8%.

A fraca demanda e o aumento dos estoques, no entanto, continuaram pesando sobre os preços spot do minério de ferro na China, maior produtora de aço do mundo, com o teor de 62% atingindo uma mínima de 18 meses a 90 dólares a tonelada na quinta-feira, mostraram dados da consultoria SteelHome.

"A expectativa é que os preços do minério de ferro encontrem um piso próximo aos níveis atuais. Mas as restrições à produção de aço da China devem permanecer até depois das Olimpíadas de Inverno de Pequim (em fevereiro), então a alta parece limitada no curto prazo", disse Hynes.

Fundamental & Technical Focus:

The EUR has found favor across the board in 2017 at an accelerating pace. Institutions are beginning to reverse their year-end calls on EUR/USD higher and the concern that the EUR as a single currency is a ‘lost cause’ continues to evaporate. Combine this with an improvement in Economic sentiment in Europe and ECB discussions of a monetary policy shift to a more hawkish stance, and you begin to get a sense for some of the factors that caused EUR to recently become one of the strongest G8 currency on a relative basis.

On the other side of the strong/weak spectrum is AUD. While not the weakest G8 currency at the time of this writing, thought it was a few weeks ago, AUD continues to remain weak. AUD/USD has moved toward January lows, and EUR/AUD recently traded above November highs. One reason that we’ve seen weakness in AUD is that institutional speculators seem to be giving up on their hope for reflation, which was played out in the FX market via being long commodity currencies like the AUD.

On Friday, the FCTC data per the Commitment of Traders showed that leveraged funds cut their net long positions down to 12,879 contracts in the week through May 9. This reduction marked the sixth straight reduction of longs and down from as high as 53,601 at the start of March when hope remained for reflation.

A key driver for AUD weakness has been iron ore prices, which has entered bear market territory. Iron ore is a key resource that the Australian economy is known for exporting to China. The drop in Iron Ore price has aligned with the rise in inventory in China. Per Bloomberg, Iron ore stockpiles at Chinese ports almost 2% (i.e., less demand than supply) to a record 134.25 million tons as of Friday, according to weekly data from Shanghai Steelhome E-Commerce Co.

These developments could continue to spell trouble for AUD longs, which is why I like EUR/AUD higher toward the 61.8% retracement of the 2015-17 range at 1.5461 with an invalidation of the long thesis on a break below the May 12 low at 1.4663.
