Occasionally, a museum or gallery client might approach us with a need for standard-size frames and glazing, so that artwork can be switched out depending upon exhibition needs. We can create these "basics frames" (custom wood frames, glazing, and matting if needed) as multiples, in most sizes and finishes. They are then fit with artwork at their destination. Our goal for every frame is impeccable craftsmanship -- a key element of this is attention to detail. Oftentimes, our millers cull lumber specifically for figure that will compliment the artwork, and each side of the frame as a whole. Here, details of a frame we designed for a work by Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954), part of an Ellsworth Kelly-curated exhibition at Mount Holyoke. The frames were milled in maple, hand finished in a pale white rub, and glazed in OP3. Matisse's ink on paper drawings were matted in 100% cotton rag board, 8-ply Rising Warm White island window mats, with matching fillets. After the linen has been smoothed onto the adhesive on all three sides of the frame's surface, Phil burnishes it using a Teflon burnisher.
