9/22/23.
Precious Recordings (London, UK) is bringing us yet another (35th to be exact) BBC session. This one was recorded by Huw Stephens, thus the new purple border (John Peel is red, and Janice Long is yellow).
Standard Fare (Sheffield, UK) were a 3-piece indie rock band fronted by Emma Kupa. They clearly were inspired by the C86 sound as well as Orange Juice, Hefner and The Wedding Present. Listen to that guitar!
Kupa went on to record solo and with Mammoth Penguins.

Now that Sheffield is over, i can rant about NHK. Deniss silver and Daniel gold!! I feel so bad for Roman tho, he really Canadian Man’d that one.
NHK is going to be a fucking bloodbath. In no particular order, we have:
Adam Saio Him Fa - IDF gold
Matteo Rizzo - SCI bronze
Kazuki Tomono - 4CC silver, IDF bronze
Shoma Uno - Word Champion, SCI gold, two olympic medals, exc exc
Jun-hwan Cha - SKAM bronze, 4CC gold
Sota Yamamoto - IDF silver
Stephen Gogolev - Canadian. Is backed by the support of Canadians. Support of Canadians usually makes you fail in men’s singles figure skating, however as a Canadian I feel obligated to put at least one on this list
Any one of these people could medal. (Except Stephen if he Canadian Mans this) They could also all fail and none of them medal. Whatever way this goes = bloodbath. lots of death. and crying. and Yuma’s not even competing.
I just realized that we could have a repeat of the IDF podium, and I really want that to happen because it would be fucking hilarious.
Kazuki and Jun 4CC rematch.
Shoma dramatic disaster or clean?
Or actually will Conrad Orzel pull a Euros 2022? for that to happen he’d need to be in a position where he might make the podium with a clean skate, and then everyone else fails. Is this happening? no. but he’s also canadian and therefore must also be included in this list.
FUCK THERES NO WAY TO BE HAPPY I WANT EVERYONE TO WIN
Skate, they said. It’ll be fun, they said. Watch this thing. WELL THE THING BECAME MY PERSONALITY. AND CAUSED TOO MUCH CRYING TO BE HEALTHY.

A-T-3 225 Cabaret Voltaire
Kirk and Mallinder continue to put out an incredible amount of work in 1983
I'm thinking about Cabaret Voltaire now because The Crackdown was mentioned in Dr Robs article https://banbantonton.com/2023/07/14/looking-for-the-balearic-beat-soundtracking-paradise/
"Nelo [Antonio Dominguez Rey] landed a residency at Pacha, alongside Joan Ribas, where he continued to pursue his “darker” sound – describing the high-point of his time there being when he had 2000 people, in this more commercial venue, dancing to Cabaret Voltaire’s The Crackdown."
The Crackdown album was CV's first release on Some Bizarre/Virgin and got to 31 on the UK album charts. The difficulty of access (getting records) has seeded so many musical movements, the British Invasion groups all mention access to American blues and rock and roll imports, Norther Soul, Reggae Soundsystems, hip hop DJs and producers digging for obscure breaks, the afrocosmic sound in Italy trying records at a different speed came from the limited supply of records in Northern Italy (that and heroin), and in Ibiza DJs competed with each other by travelling to Spain to have the best records. I found the last one fascinating because The Crackdown album and singles have always been ridiculously cheap and easy to pick up in the UK... perhaps it's like Americans, Italian or Japanese record sellers when encountering British diggers? I digress
Fans there's some fancy image processing going on on the sleeve artwork for The Crackdown... the kind of stuff that's foundation of digital image processing now
Crackdown 12" Version more from The Crackdown a few videos below

Harder to find (at least outside of Belgium) is the 12" Fools Game (Slugging' For Jesus Pt.3) which came out as a double A-side with Gut Level. Pt's 1&2 came out in 1981 on an EP called 3 Crepscule Tracks
Fools Game (Slugging' For Jesus Pt.3)
youtube
The above track was released by Les Disques Du Crépuscule which had a close relationship with Factory (and several other labels), I think they managed the Factory Bénelux sub label - or helped get it running or something, anyway. Factory release Yashar from 1982s 2x45 album as a single. Arthur Baker is working with New Order in 1983, for Yashar they get fellow Planet Rock etc producer John Robie to remix it - personally I prefer the 2x45 version. CV's VHS label Doublevision release Johnny Yesno which includes a video for this version of Yashar. Mute put out Johnny Yesno Redux in 2011, it's supposed to be terrible!
Yashar (John Robie Remix) breakdown at 4.27

Diskono is on the free 12" that comes out with The Crackdown. It's also on CV's first VHS release Doublevision Presents Cabaret Voltaire

Time on my hands – Pour passer le temps.
First in a series of blogs about time and its travels!
The clocks have swung back an hour. Blindboy was complaining about this the other week. He reckons it causes problems for women. His argument was that some women are put-off by running in the dark and with the closing-in of winter and its further hastening by the enactment of DLST society isn’t helping. There is more to this narrative, and you will have to listen to other Blindboy Podcast…
