Lawrence Fine Art is pleased to present this early (1960) work by second generation abstract expressionist painter Stephen Pace. Art critic Thomas Hess has this to say about Pace: “Pace is a brilliant member of the second generation of New York School painters who burst on the scene in the early 50s, fully made, as if from the forehead of the Statue of Liberty.” Contact for details. #stephenpace #artadvisor #artoftheday #modernart #interiordesign #abstractart #abstractexpressionism #newyorkschool #artbaselmiami #artmiami https://www.instagram.com/p/B50GW2PAaVE/?igshid=122dcsqe6mu23

It wasn’t until he left New York that second generation AbEx painter Stephen Pace threw off the structures of abstraction and began to paint figuratively. “The force of these images resides in their deft command of bodies in space balanced by saturated colors painted patchily on bare canvas. The result is a magnified Fauvism or Post-Impressionism that takes inspiration from Avery, Bonnard and Matisse...” wrote one critic for the NYT. He was the subject of a retrospective at @paam1914 this past summer. #Repost @paam1914 ・・・ This is the final week to see "Stephen Pace in Provincetown," curated by Cathy Claman, President of the Stephen and Palmina Pace Foundation. “What has developed in this work of [Stephen] Pace’s since 1964 is an intensification of brilliance – the colors have increased in brightness, and are painted more and more loosely – and the opening of figural space. With this Pace emerges as a natural inheritor of Milton Avery. And what Pace inherits from Avery, of course, is the legacy of Henri Matisse.” Peter Frank, “57th Street Review,” 1976 [Stephen Pace “Gulls and Pier (78-7A)” oil on canvas 24 1/2 x 36 1/2 inches] “Stephen Pace: Reflections” on view through Saturday, April 20, 2019. #stephenpace #pace #artreview #maineartist #nycart #indianaart #oilpainting #abstraction #landscapepainting #negativespace #artgallery #chelseagalleries #soloexhibition #modernart #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwamW1BlD6p/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=g2m3u564d4df

Inspired by his studies with Hans Hofmann, Stephen Pace’s work from the 1950s is characterized by dynamic brush strokes, shifting planes of color, and pulsating jagged forms. In a 1959 article from Look magazine, Hofmann referred to Pace as one of his most talented pupils.
