Ramzi Mallat in conversation with Najlaa El-Ageli and Yahya Zaloom

Artist Ramzi Mallat will be in conversation with Yahya Zaloom, director of P21 Gallery and independent curator Najlaa El-Ageli. The talk will provide insight into the artist's practice and cover themes regarding Fault Lines, his solo exhibition on show at the gallery.

Artist: Ramzi Mallat is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the socio-political impact of globalisation on notions of identity and self. Mallat draws on a rich tapestry of theological and folkloric history of the Levant region, his work challenging the conventional notion of tradition as a civilisational legacy by revealing a narrative based on a society’s cultural vanguard in the course of a struggle. The artist has been appointed a Trustee for the IMOS Foundation in the United Kingdom and was selected as one of Forbes Middle East’s 30 Under 30 Honorers in 2022. His most recent short documentary has been awarded the 'Official Selection' laurel by the Scarab Film Festival in Dubai, UAE, the Story International Student Film Festival in Cork, Ireland and the Lebanese Independent Film Festival

Panelist: Najlaa El-Ageli founded Noon Arts Projects in 2012 with a mission to bring the best of contemporary art from the MENA region, from both emerging and established artists, and expose it to the world stage. She was selected to be a member of the jury for ‘The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) 2016 and 2019, and sat as member of the board for The London Prints Studio from 2017 to 2020.

Moderator: Yahya Zaloom is Artistic Director of P21 Gallery, a London-based charitable trust promoting contemporary Arab art and culture, committed to creating visibility for Arab artists worldwide. Yahya holds a BA in Mixed Media Fine Arts (University of Westminster, London), an MA in Visual Culture (University of Westminster, London), and currently studying MA in Art Curation by practice (University of Teesside, Middlesbrough).

Blackness ?  II Mixed media on Paper 126cm x 118ccm 2020 Due to Globalisation , Democratic decay, falling economic systems (corruption) , famines and war many in Africa are faced with the predicament of leaving the continent for greener pastures especially regions of the  previous Colonial masters  . Its either stay and face the demise of their livelihoods 'Head on' or fall together with their National economic woes . Since the beginning of the Pandemic 'The Right Wing '  Nationalist Parties in E.U. states have blamed Africans for bringing the Corona Virus into countries like Italy and remote areas of Greece . As preposterous as the idealogy is , there has been Global truth as to where the Virus originated from i.e China . The question is how can Africans be subjected to this falsehood ? All in the name of Rhetoric that stands against minorities of colour . Thus the agenda existed in the E.U. for quite sometime . This exacerbates the fear of Refugees as an unkown threat - an Alien form of 'Othering' . This post-modern (World war I and II )  phenomenon has trickled not only in the E.U. states but also in Israel were the abuse of Non-Jews grows rampantly . China having being the epicenter of the Norval Corona virus has subjected Africans to the abuse and blame for the second wave of this catastrophic plague . These Scenarios have run in conjunction with 'Black Lives Matter' Movement as small as it may seem these situations have been in parallel frequencies with 'BLM'  that ran a mock due to Police brutality in America . Therefore reinforcing the Complexity of 'Blackness' , Blackness survives in its essence of trying to redifine its self while fighting opposing systematic natures of opression .  My Body of work in the presented context seeks to create a cross pollination between these attrocities and inhuman realities that face people of color minorities, refugees etc... 'Blackness ? My next body of work will be inspired by the Motion classic film - Touki Bouki, the Journey of the Hyena 1973 by Djibril Diop Mambety under the theme "Noir, Noir: Meditations on African Cinema and Its Influence On Visual Art" for the eighth edition of Prizm which will be held online from 1st of December till the 21st of December 2020. The film which is available on Criterion's "Martin Scorsese's World Cinema project". The Movie depicts two characters Mory and Anta. Mory is notorious through the film as a rebel for petty crimes. Cultural heritage and the effects of Post-Colonialism are the concrete elements that influence the adventures and experiences, which seem to reek havoc in both of their lives. "I am interested in marginalized people because I do believe they do more for the evolution of community than conformists" states Mambety. The couple yearn for a bright utopia full of rich prospects. We see the likes of @kanyewest and @beyonce who appropriate the wild and raw energy behind this film to interrogate Issues of Culture, Matriachy, Culture and Afrodescending religion. This can be seen with poster images from On the run II with reference to the film. Seemingly Kanye west also incorporated these themes for his video for Donda. My Body of work will take a different approach than pop culture but will engage in the mystical, emotional and existing spiritual matter behind the two individuals. My duty is to excavate the motions and intense frustration that Mory and Anta face and how much they try to run away but can't escape their shadows.
