#KnowYourWinemaker Wine industry legacy, RIP #DavidBruce … Beautiful message reposted via Thomas Fogarty… As members of the Santa Cruz Mountain Winemaking community, we would like to acknowledge the passing of Mr David Bruce. Beginning in the early 1960s, David embraced the #SantaCruzMountains as an area capable of producing #PinotNoir and #Chardonnay of the absolute highest quality. He sought knowledge from and collaborated with the brightest minds in the region (notably Martin Ray and David Bennion) and not only planted his own vineyards, but convinced many others to dedicate land, money and effort to growing Pinot Noir (and to a lesser extent Chardonnay). Today, many of the best small growing sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains can trace their history back to David and his almost evangelical passion for vineyard development in the region. Though his role in the "Judgement of Paris" is sometimes overlooked, David Bruce's 1973 Estate Chardonnay was selected by #StevenSpurrier for the 1976 competition, and was judged to be one of the top ten Chardonnays in the world. When my father wanted to plant wine grapes in 1977, he sought the advice of David. David obliged, and after a quick visit and a few glasses of Grand Cru Burgundy my father was convinced to "scale up" the project and the plan for a single five acre vineyard was revised and expanded to include multiple vineyards adding up to a cool thirty acres! In the early days (say 1978-1979) I remember David being around quite a bit, and I remember being struck at how my father would quietly listen to David's theories and advice. A few years later David was instrumental in establishing the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, and he remained a powerful guiding force for Santa Cruz Mountains wine producers for decades. We all owe a debt of gratitude to David.
