I went to a friend’s house for NYE. I know him from high school, and he went on to major in aeronautical engineering. He bought it about a year ago during the low interest property bubble while working at a startup and then quit to do his own music-related startup, and I have no idea how he’s making payments now that interest rates are higher and I’m not about to ask.

I did notice that he put up the Amazon cop camera outside his front door, and the Google wiretaps in the rooms with the most foot traffic, much to my dismay. It was my first time interacting with the wiretaps in depth, and a few friends and I were repeatedly disappointed when they steered us towards commercial works even when we specified otherwise. We asked for songs that were playable with ads on Youtube, and we got unrelated works on the music streaming subscription of choice, Apple, even when we asked for the former. We tried to initiate speech synthesis of publicly available ebooks (Viking sagas, Beowulf in Old English) and got fantasy novels from Audible in “free sample” segments.

As someone who drinks to excess and has problems falling asleep, I was one of the last four awake around 4 AM. Our group included the male half of the hosts. Being annoyed at the wiretap’s inability to parse speech like ChatGPT, we began to recite phrases like “Hey Google, play traffic noises at 6 AM”, “Hey Google, play lawnmower sounds at 7 AM”, “Hey Google, play barn noises at 8 AM”, “Hey Google, play Still D.R.E. at 4:20 PM on April 20th”, and “Hey Google, play 10 Commandments by Prince Buster at 11 PM on February 14th”, under the unspoken assumption that our host would disable the alarms before he fell asleep. Ultimately, I retired to the unfinished basement where there were no wiretaps because I was too late to claim a bedroom like everybody else.

I got up from my air mattress around noon, groggy eyed and hung over, and tried to make a request of the wiretap, upon which I was informed that they had all been unplugged because once an alarm is set on one, it plays on every single wiretap in the house.
