SEC Pays $9 Million Whistleblower Fee

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced a Whistleblower Fee of $9,000,000 Washington, DC (STLNews) The Securities and Exchange Commission announced an award of more than $9 million to a whistleblower whose significant and detailed information and assistance led to a successful SEC enforcement action. After repeatedly internally reporting the concerns, the whistleblower alerted SEC’s Enforcement Division to the conduct, prompting the opening of the investigation.  In addition, the whistleblower provided substantial and ongoing cooperation. “­Th­­­­­­­­­e whistleblower, in this case, provided critical information and continuing assistance that helped the agency recover millions of dollars for harmed investors,” said Creola Kelly, Chief of the SEC’s Office of the Whistleblower. Payments to whistleblowers are made out of an investor protection fund established by Congress, which is financed entirely through monetary sanctions paid to the SEC by securities law violators.  No money has been taken or withheld from harmed investors to pay whistleblower awards.  Whistleblowers may be eligible for an award when they voluntarily provide the SEC with original, timely, and credible information that leads to a successful enforcement action.  Whistleblower awards can range from 10 to 30 percent of the money collected when the monetary sanctions exceed $1 million. As set forth in the Dodd-Frank Act, the SEC protects the confidentiality of whistleblowers and does not disclose any information that could reveal a whistleblower’s identity.  I asked him and a few others to tell me a little from their point of view on Covid19 and how they are dealing with things, this is what they had to say...

   Did  Covid19 affect your career? “NO” 

What are you doing in the meantime?  “Riding this out. I've been playing a lot of video games and trying to finish up some reading. Spending time with my wife while she plays animal crossing is pretty relaxing.”

Before all of this, What was your outlook, expectations, and feelings about the year at the beginning of 2020?  “When Trump nearly started a war at the beginning of the year, I didn't have high hopes. I was looking forward to the election and kicking him out.

When / where did you hear about the coronavirus AND were you worried?  “When I first heard of it around Christmas time, it was on Reddit, I believe. I wasn't worried at the time, but I didn't realize how severe it was over there.”

How did you feel about Covid-19 as it related to you and your wellbeing on March 1st? “I was concerned mainly for my parents and in-laws, but not really myself. I heard that it's mostly fatal to those over 60, which all of those that I mentioned are.”

How did you feel about Covid-19 as it related to you and your wellbeing when the city officially shut down? “It was scary. Some co-workers of mine still see it as being blown out of proportion and I don't understand that mentality at all. When I heard the city was being shut down, I was slightly relieved but nervous at the same time. Mainly worried about taking care of my wife and being able to provide for us during these strange times.”

What are your Personal hopes/goals for when this is over?  “I'd like to go hang out with friends more often and go on more trips/vacations. I've noticed I have really taken for granted the freedoms that I had before. I know I'm still free to do those things, but I don't want to put others at risk.”

What do you think the new normal for you will be when this is all over? “I'll be a little more outgoing I think. My wife and I are homebodies, but I'd like to get out a little more than we do now. Baby steps!”  

What do you think will be the new normal for STL after this is over? “That's hard to say...I'm not sure how the city will recover from this as I'm sure unemployment will be a big issue. I hope that people are able to stay on their feet and mostly return to normalcy. I hope there will be more planning around situations like this for the future. I don't know what those plans could be, but it would be nice to have some peace of mind.”

I asked Dan and a few others to tell me a little from their point of view on Covid19 and how they are dealing with things, this is what they had to say...

Did  Covid19 affect your career? “yes”

What are you doing in the meantime? “Riding it out for the time being. I’ve been live streaming DJ sets from my studio and I’ve been able to raise some money here and there. Otherwise, I’ve been focusing on being creative. Recording a lot of new music, learning some new software, and hanging with my dog..”

Before all of this, What was your outlook, expectations, and feelings about the year at the beginning of 2020? “Super positive. Had tons of tour dates and festivals booked with my band. A bunch of amazing events and projects to look forward to. That’s all gone now..”

When / where did you hear about the coronavirus AND were you worried? “Heard about the outbreak in China months ago. Honestly, never thought it would make it over here. I was very naive..”

How did you feel about COVID-19 as it related to you and your well-being on March 1st? “Pretty freaked out. I have asthma, so it’s really scary..”

How did you feel about COVID-19 as it related to you and your well-being when the city officially shut down? “Think it’s extremely necessary and people need to take it was more serious around here. I haven’t left the house in over 15 days.”

What are your Personal hopes/goals for when this is over? “That people will stop taking things for granted and really come out of this with a deeper appreciation for each other and the planet.”

What do you think the new normal for you will be when this is all over? “Probably won’t be shaking as many hands. Going to throw some events to bring the city together.”

What do you think will be the new normal for STL after this is over? “People really shifting focus and [being] supportive [of] local.”

Did  Covid19 affect your career? “yes” 

What are you doing in the meantime? “Riding it out for now. I had a little saved up and my boss is helping out the employees as much as he can. For now, I'm just sorting and cataloging all my records.”

Before all of this, What was your outlook, expectations, and feelings about the year at the beginning of 2020? “I was just glad to see another year. I was thinking about going to go on a little vinyl tour. Playing music and collecting music around the country. Might have to put that off for a while.”

When / where did you hear about the coronavirus AND were you worried?  “I heard about it partially through the news, friends and family, and then coworkers once people started closing up shop.”

How did you feel about COVID-19 as it related to you and your wellbeing on March 1st? “I didn't really know how to feel. I was more worried about friends and family more so than my wellbeing.”

How did you feel about COVID-19 as it related to you and your wellbeing when the city officially shut down?  “"Run To The Hills" - 'Iron Maiden plays in the background'”

What are your Personal hopes/goals for when this is over?  “Do the best I can to recover and help those around me do the same..”

What do you think the new normal for you will be when this is all over? “More prevention measures and a better understanding of what can happen to us all if we don't pay attention to detail.”  

What do you think will be the new normal for STL after this is over? “I don't know honestly. Still wrapping my head around it..”

   What are you doing in the meantime?  “Selling Everything on EBay, and trying to remember how to write a song all by myself.”

Before all of this, What was your outlook, expectations, and feelings about the year at the beginning of 2020? “That my band was going to tour more than we did last year. Other than that it was just another year closer to the grave.... I mean 2020 was about to be mine yo!

When / where did you hear about the coronavirus AND were you worried? “Somewhere on the Internet probably Facebook maybe an email. I didn’t think much of it when I first heard about it.”

How did you feel about COVID-19 as it related to you and your wellbeing on March 1st?  “I guess a little bit more concerned, but more worried about money problems than my health probably.”

How did you feel about COVID-19 as it related to you and your wellbeing when the city officially shut down? “A lot more afraid especially for my father and grandparents.”

What are your Personal hopes/goals for when this is over? “I hope that I will enjoy the everyday things that I do a little bit more than I used to when I took them for granted and maybe have a couple of side hustles going on. ( I don’t care if that sounds lame, it’s true ) I also hope to reschedule a bunch of these tour dates that got postponed.”

What do you think the new normal for you will be when this is all over? “I think it will take a long time before it’s actually all over so we will slowly just ease back into normalcy. Hopefully, I appreciate my time and freedom a little bit more than I did before.”  

What do you think will be the new normal for STL after this is over? “Same old shit probably.”
