this is one of those, "wait, I seriously haven't posted that to tumblr yet?" drawings, lol. I drew this character months ago when I was thinking I might give making adoptables a shot, but even though that project fizzled out, I still like the designs I drew for it.
This brown hyena character was inspired by the Afrikaans name for the species: "strandwolf", or "beach wolf", due to many of them being coastal scavengers. I imagine her as an eccentric seaside hermit, reclusive by choice but still friendly enough to offer a passing traveler a cup of tea or clam soup.
There is so much sand in her fur always.

Parahyaena brunnea
Mostly due to habitat loss, brown hyenas are the rarest of the hyena species, with 4-10 thousand individuals in the wild. There are 30-50 thousand wild spotted hyenas, for comparison.
Tumblr media
Brown hyenas are also known as strandwolves, which means "beach wolves" in Afrikaans, a language spoken primarily in South Africa. This name was given to them because brown hyenas in coastal areas spend a lot of time walking down beaches in search of food, and maybe to unwind after a long day. Some of the largest brown hyena populations are found in these coastal areas of Southern Africa, but there are also large populations in the Kalahari desert.
Tumblr media
Although the name strandwolf suggests it, brown hyenas are not closely related to wolves or other canines. They can resemble canines, but hyenas are more closely related to cats than dogs. Their closest relatives are mongooses and civets. The photo below shows an African civet.
Tumblr media
Brown hyenas are generally smaller than striped and spotted hyenas, but they can still get pretty big, weighing up to 90 pounds (40.8 kg). This size and their powerful jaws make them seem like formidable predators, but they're pretty bad hunters. They mostly scavenge for food or steal it from more capable hunters like cheetahs, leopards, and jackals. Since they can digest bones, hooves, horns, hair, and skin, they can basically eat every scrap food they find. Brown hyenas often live in groups, but this scavenging is done on their own.
Their clans are much smaller than those of spotted hyenas, and the structure is more similar to a wolf pack; most hyenas in the group are the offspring of the dominant hyenas. Brown hyenas are very social and form close bonds with other hyenas.
Tumblr media
I rate the brown hyena 17/10. I like them. They seem a little bit lazy with their poor hunting skills and walks down the beach

Brown hyena, Parahyaena brunnea.
Also called Strandwolf, the Brown hyena lives a more solitary life than Spotted hyena, in clans of 6 or so individuals, a mating pair and offspring. Most of the remaining 8-10000 Brown Hyenas left are in the southern Kalahari and southwestern Africa near the coast. They are mostly nocturnal and scavenge the bulk of their diet.

I see people like giving Varré wolf traits, which is understandable because of the whole symbolic relationship wolf and lamb but he is a brown hyena/strandwolf to me.

@roarofancients:
“Spotted aren’t allowed, kid. Hyena are more than jus one species. Spotted, Striped, Brown and even Aardwolf. I am a brown, due to my long hair here being well, brown. My ears are also pointed more, while their are always exceptions to the rules - spotted hyena usually have rounded ears. Us other hyena species look more cat-like in the face. While I do have visible stripes on my legs, Aardwolf and Striped Hyena have similar looks in fur, even to the stripes. Aardwolves though eat bugs, termites mostly. The Ardwolves are a lot smaller, also.” The Brown hyena speaks, “Aardwolf means Earth Wolf, and us Browns are also called Strandwolf. I don’t think the Striped have another name they go by, although they are known to work with actual Wolves on occasion.” Scar just gives a smile, “Well, most spotteds. Simply because they cause too much trouble, and it’s those ones that are the issue. This friend has grown up with other cubs his age, and some pups being raised alongside feline cubs in a small unique family Pride just by the borders. They are our allies, and one of the many early alert systems for our Kingdom of potential enemies beyond our borders.” ———————————————- It took some time, but they finally got to the end caverns’ chambers. “They say the Lion Guard was created to defeat great evil, yet however even evil can befall the best of leaders.”
“I am Simba the future king. If you don’t cause any trouble you can stay with us.” He was already acting like he was king, it didn't even occur to him what his father might think about it. But anyway, if they are part of the alert systems, Mufasa wouldn’t mind one guy entering the Pride Lands, right? Furthermore, Scar was here - and he would chase him away if he were dangerous, right?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Simba really enjoyed this travel deep beneath the lair. All the tests might looked like game to him tho, he could comprehend the underlying meaning of them at his intellectual level and definitely learned new things here that might be useful for him one day as king.
The part he liked the most was the final chamber. With those stalactites and that cyan glow emitting from several rocks the cave looked like it was otherworld. He had never seen anything like this before. Simba’s eyes widened, his jaw dropped as he looked around and started studying the paintins on the pillars, later noticing there was actually one more room in the corner hidden by foliage.
“Uncle Scar? What’s in there?”
A Brown Heyna, Hyaena brunnea ,aka a Strandwolf. The caretaker chased it out of it’s enclosure, so all of it’s hair was raised. Of course, my camera was still set to take photos of the Striped Hyena that was in very dark shade, so it was all blown out, and I missed it.
Brown Hyena
The brown hyena (Hyaena brunnea), also called strandwolf, is a species of hyena found in Namibia, Botswana, western and southern Zimbabwe, southern Mozambique and South Africa. It is currently the rarest species of hyena. The brown hyena inhabits desert areas, semi-desert, and open woodland savannahs.
Brown hyenas are distinguished from other species by their long shaggy coat and pointed ears, a dark brown coat and a short tail. Their legs are striped brown and white, and adults have a distinct cream-colored fur ruff around their necks. n average adult male weighs 89–96 pounds, while an average female weighs 83–89 pounds. The skulls of brown hyenas are larger than those of the more northern striped hyena, and their dentition is more robust, indicating a less generalized dietary adaptation.
Brown hyenas have a social hierarchy comparable to those of wolves, with an alpha male and alpha female. They live in clans composed of extended families of four to six individuals. Clans defend their territory and all members cooperate in raising cubs.  Brown hyenas maintain a stable clan hierarchy through ritualized aggressive displays and mock fights.
Brown hyenas are primarily scavengers the bulk of whose diet consists of carcasses killed by larger predators, but they may supplement their diet with rodents, insects, eggs, fruit and fungi. They are however poor hunters, and live prey makes up only a small proportion of their diet. Brown hyenas are aggressive scavengers, frequently appropriating the kills of black-backed jackals, cheetahs, and leopards. Single brown hyenas may charge at leopards with their jaws held wide open and can tree adult male leopards; they have been observed treeing leopards even when no kill was in contention.
So over and over again blogs crop up that are this mashmash of wilderness/wild animal imagery (only wolves and antlered ungulates), iron age or paleolithic artefacts and sites, fantasy/medieval imagery, "cottagecore"/self-sufficient fantasy, etc.
And WITHOUT FAIL, like 90% of these blogs eventually feature some neotrad or conservative or fuck shit rhetoric. They can't help it. The mask slips.
They try to hide it by saying they're "animist" or "rewinding" or "traditional" or whatever but end up posting Varg Vikernes quotes or way too many pictures of Bavarian farm girls or commenting on other people's posts with insane political rants.
Their "scholarship" is like absolutely insane. It's all Theulean Perspective tweets and cherrypicled quotes from people that were disgraced from academia back in 1960 for being hysterically obviously racist and doing Bad Science but like they don't give a fuck it they're like "Germanic man hated gays and women were subservient and also Jewish people are the reason this is discredited end post"
And it's not like there's a lack of left-leaning political ideology that advocates for the abolition of modern industrial society and talks about how bad it is for people. Like there's tons of Anarcho-primitivists and neo-tribal mutualists and whatever the fuck.
But these morons somehow think that if they buy into the state ideology of Nazi Germany somehow they're gonna achieve Libertarian Freedom Utopia.
