#2653 - Helichrysum plumeum - NZ Alpine Strawflower
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Surprisingly, this is an Everlasting Daisy well on the way to be a cushion plant, by the look of it. But quite a few species go that route in harsh alpine areas. The dense fuzz is another adaptation to those sort of conditions. The last name in its former synonym Helichrysum selago var. tomentosum refers to the fuzz - selago apparently refers to its resemblance to the Lycopod fir clubmoss Huperzia selago.
Endemic to southern Canterbury mountains. Grown as an ornamental in alpine and subalpine areas, where it requires full sun and very good drainage.

Strawflower is tired of being thrown onto the barn floor. She would much like for you to treat her with the respect she has earned through months and months of blooming. [In truth, she's been blooming non-stop since October, and only now are some of the blooms turning tattered and torn and finally encouraging the barn owner to trim them.
