We are faced with social detachment, something many of us have not known until now. With this comes the opportunity for personal growth and closeness to ‘me’. As Maslow's pyramid of needs portrays, our life is based on the search for purpose, and in order to feel complete we need not only material factors but above all psychological/spiritual ones. From our point of view fashion, like other businesses, will have to learn to make more of their profit from addressing, not only our basic needs but also, and as important, our higher and spiritual and psychological ones as well. That would be truly enlightened capitalism.

Social media claim that there are countless people infected and many deaths, a huge social impact, moreover, this will result in a drastic drop in the world economy. Consequently there will be difficulties in the middle and lower classes which may cause a rethought in consumption needs and therefor it’s reduction. These facts confirm that social consciousness only changes with major impacts on a personal level, i.e. when reality touches the skin. For example, there are several platforms where we can find real facts, in image, video or text of negative impacts of the fashion or food industry, however in the near future, during or after the pandemic is that we will find that it will be better to go buy bread at the bakery of the neighborhood than go to the supermarket because we are really helping someone not to have to close their business or to have better working conditions or even because we manufacture their products with better quality. We should think like that not only when something catastrophic happens, but always.

However, in our opinion there are good things to be learned from this coronavirus experience. We have to emphasize that coronavirus pandemic leaded to a huge drop in air pollution. Experts say that Covid-19 is a “clear warning shot’, that ‘Nature is sending us a message’, so here is our last change, given by Mother Nature, to act differently. In terms of fashion we must continue the path towards a circular economy, partnerships with science and technology and business models that reduce impact. Also a study in 2013 proved that by exclusively shopping online, the carbon footprint of one person is almost halved. Nevertheless, we are faced with a paradigm shift where our obligation is to adapt to the circumstances of the now and which may become a reality again. The relation between fashion and practicality has always been a parallel, but since the COVID-19 pandemic, the lines are starting to merge. Companies such as Prada, Armani and LVMH have donated money, dedicated staff and factories to making masks. We’re seeing an uprise in heroic designers doing their best to make a difference.

In conclusion, we know that fashion is not a priority business, yet solutions are not utopian as the world continues to run. Also we realized that even with a great negative impact it will also be a change of ideologies where everything will be more valued. Now stay at home and wash your hands.
