I realized how little control I had over my own situation when I watched my classmates graduate without me. 5 years in, my finish line was nowhere in sight. — For fear of being the problem student, I never spoke up when I got passed up on projects, my data taken from me, and my lab celebrating the birthdays of my White classmates but mine conveniently forgotten year after year. I was the highest performing, the only one to have successfully completed a Master’s in Statistics. Simultaneously. And yet, I was invisible, forgotten, less than. — So I decided to confront my mentor, who then revealed she had an 8 year plan for me despite classes expiring after 7. “Or just complete a Master’s,” she said. — It was then that I realized she had been using me this whole time and never actually planned to graduate me. By then my identity was completely wrapped up in being a future doctor that I felt I was better off dead than not being who I was meant to be. — Sitting in my car and playing with suicidal thoughts, I realized I needed to prioritize my mental health ASAP. Getting an education wasn’t supposed to make me feel dead. Getting an education was supposed to give me a life. — Therapy kept me alive during those times, and I made it to graduation. After sharing my PhD woes, I realized suicide is the norm, rather than the anomaly. The nature of the profession is purgatory for perfectionists.
