Nat’s House is a minimalist residence located in Sydney, Australia, designed by Studio Prineas. A recycled brick extension to a 1920s cottage bounces north light into the previously dark home. Dynamic shifts in the ceiling plane create lofty living, kitchen & dining spaces that forge a strong connection the house’s previously detached garden. The existing house was compromised by poorly lit interiors and the separation of living spaces and garden, half a level below. The design response maintains the original cottage and demolishes an inferior add-on. In its place, a new addition has been designed to capture natural light. Sited on the lot’s northern boundary, the new work is designed to reduce overshadowing of the garden as well as its neighbor to the south.

Out of 437 entries and 105 finalists, the eight winners of the 35th Dulux Colour Awards have been announced!
Winners and commendations across the award’s seven categories were awarded at a live streamed gala event last evening. Collectively, these projects represent the most innovative and creative uses of colour across Australia and New Zealand design over the past 12 months.
Taking out the overall Australian Grand Prix award was 22 William by SJB, which also won the Commercial & Multi Residential Exterior category. The building’s facade, made up of existing brick and perforated screening, features bold jungle green gesturing a sense of play in the largely industrial Sydney suburb of Beaconsfield. Dulux Spinach Green was selected for the perfect balance of richness to contextually complement the leafy street tree canopies and city’s street signage.
A New Zealand Grand Prix prize was also awarded to Central Hotel by Naumi Hotels for its bold, whimsical and intriguing interior design by Undercurrent.
Kennedy Nolan’s Erskine House won the Residential Interior for their playful yet sophisticated approach to modernising a Victorian home. Starting with a cool and calming colour palette including Dulux Duck Egg Blue, Banksia, and Red Capital, the project is a cohesive home that triggers positive memories, and helps create new ones.
Rounding out the residential winners was Bona Vista by Studio Prineas, which won the Single Residential Exterior award. This project’s colour palette including Dulux American Mahogany and Reddy Brown pays homage to the identity of the original Federation bungalow house in line with heritage guidelines, while allowing for the practicalities of contemporary living. The result is a surprising and memorable volume, articulated by partially obscured skylights filtering natural light.
Congratulations to all the winning designers!

Australian Interior Design Awards 2021 Shortlist
Australian Interior Design Awards 2021
The highly anticipated 2021 Australian Interior Design Awards shortlist has been announced, with 190 projects recognised for excellence in interior design.
As Australia’s eminent design program, the industry-based awards acknowledge the exceptional interior design work produced across the residential, commercial and public sectors, both domestically and internationally.
Delivered by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) and Architecture Media’s Artichoke magazine, the 2021 campaign marks the awards’ eighteenth year, and a return to the regular program following the successful execution of the first-ever digital broadcast in 2020.
The jury, made up of some of the countries most esteemed interior designers, noted that this year’s shortlist highlighted the ingenuity of Australia’s design community, with featured practices embracing the challenges presented by the pandemic, resulting in a transformation of traditional typologies that reject the ways of the past for something entirely new.
The 2021 jury, convened by Geraldine Maher, Director of Geraldine Maher Design, includes:
• Madeleine Blanchfield, Director, Madeleine Blanchfield Architects (NSW) • Caroline Diesner, Principal, Hassell (QLD) • Ryan Genesin, Director, Genesin Studio (SA) • Yasmine Ghoniem, Principal, YSG (NSW) • Patrick Kennedy, Founding Director, Kennedy Nolan (VIC) • George Livissianis, Founder, George Livissianis (NSW) • Rachael McCarthy, Studio Director, Bates Smart (VIC) • Adele Winteridge, Founding Director, Foolscap Studio (VIC)
The full list of final award recipients will be presented at the Awards Announcement Dinner, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Sydney on Friday, 3 September 2021.
