Sothis lets out a short laugh at the critique of the question. She was thinking much the same after all. “The organizers, clearly.”  She leans her head down as close to the table as she can, trying to see beneath the card the best she can without being able to actually pick it up and flip it. Which is not at all. “Hm… I suppose one could attribute such vagueness to an attempt to allow an ‘open-ended’ perception.” She sighs, lifting her head as she gives up on her investigation of the card. She doesn’t know what she expected there. Her brows furrow as she turns her attention to the groups around them, attempting to peer at their questions to see if they’re just as strange. “Still though, I do agree. A question such as this does seem rather out of place within a ‘romantic’ setting, by all accounts…”

"Romantic. Huh." Right, this was supposed to be about romance, or friendship, at the very least. Testing chemistry between two people or something in a controlled setting. Had Erk been paying complete attention during the pitch? Not particularly.

The experiement part had certainly interested him at the time, but now he's almost wishing that he had elected to stay in his room and continue studying the topic he had been reading up on.

"Religious, or... hm, what's the word?" Erk pauses, scanning through his mind, "Ah yes, theological. Theological debates do not interest me much anyway. Saints are historical figures revered in one way or another, I care not for the divine aspect of tales about them."

He scoffs, "Can you imagine trying to actually form a proper connection over a question like that anyone? You might as well have asked me to pick out a random book from the library to discuss with no prior context."

aloe : how does your muse handle grief ?

though i want to say her reaction would be extreme, it actually isn't. in fact, it's the opposite? her handle on grief, reaction-wise, is quite calculated despite the immediate dissociation as if her heart doesn't fully understand that she's supposed to be grieving.

likewise, the only times i can remember Zephia being forced to grieve, with her whole heart, is after the destruction of her village and before Griss' death ( as she had bled out before he did ). her instinct in light of both incidents was to take back control; younger her immediately tried to destroy her Dragonstone and, to an extent, herself instead of idly carrying or being the cause of her parents' deaths while pre-death her used the rest of her magic to create a crystal for Alear, more to spite Sombron than to help Alear despite it doing just that and her words insinuating the latter.

so, in a way, it could be argued that Zephia doesn't really acknowledge grief properly until a loooong time passes. her first instinct will always be to regain the control she lost from "grieving" in the first place. and by not recognizing grief as an actual emotion until centuries pass, she tends to forget exactly what brought the grief upon her in the first place. and that kind of just... ruins the whole healing process. it's like a continuous cycle.

I wish I could give a more elaborate answer but Zephia, at her core, is a person who doesn't waste much time on the human aspects that make her, her. that's just not who she is or who she was raised to be; both by her tribe and Sombron.

for example, instead of actually being sad about Marni's betrayal ( which I can confidently say had an impact on her, no matter if the said impact was big or not ), she immediately killed the hound instead of wasting time to wonder what drove Marni to act the way she did. while that was cruel and Zephia's uncaring comments on it were heartless, I truly believe that it was her form of grieving. taking back the control she loses is the only comfort she deems necessary to helping her feel better.

however, another factor might just be that she didn't really care that much for Marni at that time since she had yet to realize the dynamic they had was what she had wanted all along. so, to Zephia of the past and present, that incident wouldn't even be counted as something to grieve over. but there is no doubt that she does care about her.

anywho, my last note on this is to reiterate that grief likely isn't an emotion she's been subjected to a lot, which, in her thousands of years alive, wouldn't make her as responsive or familiar with it.

With the bulk of the monastery’s living spaces rebuilt, it’s time to finish moving in! A few handy craftsmen have popped into town offering custom furniture, ranging from trendy and modern to classic and decorative. For those strapped for cash, there’s the option to trade work hours for goods. In any case, whether you’re new here or you lost most of your stuff during the attack on Garreg Mach, now’s as good a time as any to grab a friend and spruce up your new digs in your own style!

The external damage to the monastery had largely been repaired but the interior still left a lot to be desired. Bylet's main teaching classroom was bare apart from the board, a couple of charred desks and bookshelves. It needed a rehaul to make it fit for teaching. The Professor had been able to make do so far by having more practical sessions in the sparring ring but it wasn't a long-term solution.

Thankfully, a load of craft-folk had come to aid in this endeavour. While they didn't have much spare gold or experience, Byleth was willing to aid in construction. After-all how hard could it be with some decent guidance and easy to assemble pieces.

As they were heading to their classroom to meet with a craftsman, they spotted the familiar green-hair and ribbons of their 'favourite' goddess.

"Sothis!" They called out, a 'plan' forming. "Are you free? I need a hand with something"

Zephia pauses in shock for a moment, staring down at the small girl. She was not human, but oddly enough, she did not seem to know what she was. Zephia frowns, twirling a long stand of hair idly in her finger as she contemplated what to say. Was it not obvious to anyone else that this girl had some sort of divinity? Even herself? Zephia would have thought that not noticing such a thing about your own soul would rest well within the realm of impossible.

"Mn. Yes, I am... not from Fodlan, but it will remain my home for the forseeable future." Not as if she had anything waiting for her back in Elyos anyway. Not that she ever wished to return there.

"As for what... I am a mage dragon of some renown in my homeland. Not as if such a thing means anything here in Fodlan, but I still wish to remain proud of such lineage."

[ Spell ] - The sender and the receiver put their hands up in the air, posing in a way that spells out a word.

The confirmation of the existence of spirits and-or ghosts is an intriguing part of the evening, Katarina thinks distantly, if not somewhat troubling for reasons not to do with the girl casually floating by. Well, that's alright; more startling to her here and now is that ghosts and-or spirits exist, and one of them--

"You want to take a picture... with me? O-okay."

Just why the girl in green chose her of all people, Katarina isn't sure, but... it's kind of nice, in a way. She manages a grateful (if somewhat shy) smile, and turns her attention to the props by instinct. ...and then just as swiftly, she reminds herself that her present company is translucent and would have little, if any, use for any of these.

"Maybe we should spell something out instead..." But this only presented another problem: what, if anything, could they reasonably spell out with only their hands between them? "We could spell... Boo?"

Ah. She shrivels up a bit inside once she's said it out loud, fingers tenting and then intertwining as she fidgets. "S-sorry, I know it's cheesy. I just thought... maybe it could be cheesy and cute?"

...Regardless of her personal embarrassment, the photo is taken eventually, and she looks down to the picture with a touch of lightness to her face. So the photo-artifex can capture ghosts as well.

"Oh-- oh, before you go..." A hand reaches out, but stops short of embarrassing herself a second time. "I'm Katarina." A faint smile. "...Thank you for the picture."

louis looks over the flashcard before him. what heavy phrasing ! whoever had suggested this surely had less than colorful things to say about the winged-companion of mans favorite steed.

"hmm. . ." but how nice it is to see others tact on such a heavily opinionated question. perhaps his newfound friend will be defensive. maybe, they will follow along. placid, or passionate ? aah, what a nice spectacle to behold. the inner machinations of peoples heart ! his favorite. "to be honest with you, i actually rather prefer a pegasus over a horse."

he looks towards sothis with a gentle laugh. "they have received the short end of the stick here ! someone must be in their corner, no?"

She frowns as she stares at her partner, in a way which anyone can tell screams ‘I do not want to be here’. She thought she was signing up to view the results, not participate! Ugh.

Whatever, may as well be a good sport about it. It’s been a while since Sothis herself has been able to do any form of ‘experiment’, due to her physical limitations. If she ever could… 

“You there.” She clears her throat, finally addressing the person before her rather than just glaring at him. She squints her eyes to look over the question, reading aloud in a monotone and unamused voice. This is a dumb question. “Saints. Yes or no.”

She floats, well more like hovers, though it's just barely noticeable. A floating girl is asking him about saints.

"Is there... more to the query?" It was rather vague. Was it asking if he believed beyond tales of actual people? Or was it asking his opinion? Neither sound particularly appealing to him.

"I suppose... yes?" He closes the book he had been reading, dog-earring the page gently to keep his place. Just because he was from Etruria... "the church in my homeland was founded by a woman we call a saint, but if we are talking pure divine acts, there is no historical basis for such a thing. In which case, then my answer would be no."

He crosses his arms, staring at (through?) the girl before him, "What an inane question. Who asks such a thing?"

Disrupting the Scene

You watch as the storybook characters play out their scripted lives, day in and day out.  As though fettered, they stick to their routines; they fulfill their roles - or lack thereof. They do what must be done to keep the main beats of their storybook life going. But what happens if something new and different were to be introduced by an outside force? Will they continue on as if nothing happened? Or will they instead break? Perhaps you might be inclined to find out. [Grants Reason +1]

Byleth had been enjoying a good story, an opportunity to relax after a busy day of teaching. Suddenly there had been a bright flash of light and now she appeared to be living in said book instead! Looking around to gather her bearings, the Professor took in her surroundings. It appeared to be a simple town, wooden frame buildings lining cobbled streets. Colourful flags hung, strung above her head and there was the faint chiming of a clock in the distance from a tall tower rising up over the rooftops. 

Speaking of clocks, there was something eerie about this place. Despite the image of a bustling scene bursting with life, the streets also felt empty and regimented. People moved as though running on a schedule, regular as clockwork. It was unnerving in its mundanity. She approached the nearest person, to ask where she was, but they just looked at her blankly for a second before carrying on their business. 

After getting a similar response from a couple more citizens, Byleth gave up and went and sat by the central fountain. It was frustrating and she wished she wasn’t alone here. As if willed into existence, the next time the Professor looked up she spotted the familiar green hair of a certain goddess. “Sothis!” She called out. “You’re here too!”

[ Laugh ] - Laughing makes for a natural smile, and so the sender tries to make the receiver laugh for the photo.

Claude tells himself he isn't the kind of person to get sentimental. He chose this path for himself, knowing that it would bring him far from the only home he's known, from the only people he could trust in such a hostile world. 1180 comes and returns again and again, with Fódlan's threats more overt and dangerous each time. Do his parents know? Do they know it's been almost four years since they last spoke?

Sending letters to Almyra outside of official channels is too risky. Judith had told him so, that his high position in both countries meant that 'moments of weakness' would have dire consequences for everyone involved if they were discovered. 'Wishing for otherwise won't help you here, boy'. And yet he still wishes that Mom and Dad could see just how much he's changed since they last saw each other, even if it's through a picture.

His portrait already hangs in the Riegan estate, but he's sure Gramps would appreciate an updated version. Stiff, neutral-faced, Claude can hear the old man's barking as if it was yesterday, him getting sores on his ass while the portrait artist hemmed and hawed over which colors to mix for his skintone. The Projectionist adjusts the lights in a similar way. That's ok. Claude can wait.

He settles with peeking at the crowd behind the Projectionist, focused on the ball. He recognizes a few faces: Professor Manuela, Teach, Seteth... hang on... Claude blinks. A girl stands (stands?) before him, appearing out of thin air. With a joke.

Despite himself, Claude can't help but smile. It's too ridiculous not to.

MAGE DRAGON RETREATED FROM ONE CURIOUS BEING, only to approach its next table as the curious being. blinking its gaze between the assigned number on the table and the floating, serene lady situated nearest to it. though surprising, whatever shock remained had swiftly softened into minor curiosity; this would not be its first time dealing with a ghost, and neither, a being that seemed almost transparent despite its place in the world.

thus, zephia smoothed its skirts and took a seat, crossing its ankles and offering the ghost a courteous smile.

though their names were already printed on a card atop the table, it decided to happily elaborate, "i am zephia, a clergywoman of the church and a professor; unaffiliated, though i teach three weapon-based subjects."

and once pleasantries were put aside, mage dragon offered first to take the topic card and read it aloud for the both of them: "how do you connect with others on an... interpersonal level?"

a pause. what an odd question? it hummed, folding the card and pondering for a moment on what to say, and how to say it. to connect with another, on a deeply sensitive level, was as rare as it was a flaw. there were few zephia could say they truly understood and wanted to understand. so, it shrugged and laid the question, instead, at the feet of its companion.

"to ask of something so situational is interesting, however i'd rather let you answer first than nag you with my uncertainties on the subject of bonds. there is much to consider when communicating with anyone." simply because it would not answer. "and, as the... being that you are, surely, connecting with others must be an amusing feat."

a quiet hum buzzes through the dining hall as those assembled are shuffled in. this 'psychological experiment' or 'speed dating game' or 'social gathering' or whatever it is has been prepared. in place of the long dining tables, the hall is filled with numerous small, round tables, each with a number placed upon them. you are to find your assigned tables, chat with your partner, and hopefully make some kind of connection.

the goal of this exercise is somewhat vague, but knoll and hubert seem poised to take notes. so that's interesting.
