dc brushless slim turnstile barrier also called gain access to wing barriers gates, which comes from the access control system, is among the important parts of modern entryway and exit control. The door wings are driven by the control system and open and close immediately. The operating mode can be selected through programs settings: As soon as it is confirmed that the individual entering is licensed, the door wings open immediately. It closes after a delay, and the hold-up time is adjustable. Typical dc brushless speedlane turnstile doors are divided into scissor doors (city flap barriers door) and swing doors. (1) Scissor doors are often utilized in rail transit, and common scissor doors are primarily used in trains and other locations. The door wings extend from the within the box, which can effectively seal the passage and play the role of access control. In addition, an infrared noticing gadget is set up inside the door body, which can recognize the purpose of "one person, one card" for people to pass through. (2) The swing door appeared later than the scissor door and comes from the second generation dc brushless speed turnstile barriers. Such dc brushless glass The characteristic of gates barrier is that the door wings run in the front and back instructions. The operation procedure is within the body's view, which is more secure. In addition, because the door wings do not need to be pulled back into the box, The designs of swing doors are more different. Due to the above characteristics, swing doors are typically utilized in banks, corporate buildings, high-end office complex, and so on. Anti-trailing function: There is an overall infrared light band detection location in the channel. The switch state can be adjusted by software according to the customer's accuracy requirements. The application of the light band to adjust to different requirements prevents the shortcomings of point-type infrared detectors that are easily infected and affects the dependability of judgment, and can effectively judge the future. Tag reader who checks out the card. When the system figures out that tailgating has occurred, the system will respond based upon the location of the valid cardholder returned by the infrared detector. After the door opening signal is sent, there are still some unusual usages that will set off an alarm.

Joshua’s Subway Incident
It was almost three AM by the time Joshua finished up for the night at the office. Thanks to a computer problem with the west coast branch, the figures he needed for his sales report didn't arrive until well after midnight. With a sigh of relief upon completion, he picked up his suit coat, turned off the lights, and left the office.  All he kept thinking about was getting home and sleeping in late.  It was already early Saturday morning.  No sooner than he had pushed the elevator button, than he realized his wallet and keys were left on his desk.  The door to the office locked automatically behind him.  There was no way to re-enter without a key. To make matters worse, his car keys were on the same key chain.  No money, and no car.   "How could I be so dumb?"  He muttered under his breath.   He searched through the pockets of his suit coat, hoping to find some loose cash, spare key, anything. Sure enough, tucked away on the inside pocket of his jacket, was one neatly folded twenty dollar bill. He thought to himself, "It might just be enough, if I took the subway to the end of the line, and then a cab the rest of the way home."   It was certainly worth trying.  Hanging around the city in the hopes someone might show up at the office on Saturday morning didn't seem such a good idea.  Off he went, disappearing into one of the street entrances to the underground to catch an uptown train.  It could have been a long wait.  Trains ran very infrequently in the late hours, and the station was completely empty, outside of the single token booth attendant.  He purchased one token, pocketing his change and passed through the turnstiles to the platform.  Not a soul in sight.  He looked down the track, expecting to see nothing but darkness, however he caught his first break of the night.  He could see a light in the distance, and the sound of metal reverberating off the tracks told him a train was fast approaching.   His place on the platform put him in the last car, which was empty. He took a seat, leaned back and closed his eyes for the long forty mile ride uptown.  The sound of the tracks made him a little sleepy. The train moved rapidly.  It stopped at the next station.  The doors opened and closed.  No one entered the car.  Then the train moved to the next station and repeated the same thing. This went on for several stops, and Joshua was almost asleep when he heard loud music, and even louder voices.  He opened his eyes and looked to the end of the car.  Three guys had entered, who by all appearances had been having some night. They were jumping around, yelling, pushing each other, and kicking the doors as they closed behind them.  The one with the radio dropped it on a seat, and turned the volume up even higher.  All three of them had beer bottles in their hands, and by the sound of them, they had already put a few away.  Their dress and demeanor appeared to be your average street punks, sporting short-cropped hair, jeans and black leather jackets.  Joshua closed his eyes and began to doze off again, expecting nothing of trouble, until he felt a hand banging on his shoulder. Awakened once more, he looked up, and one of the guys was standing there, a tall thin reddish blond haired character.  His stare blank.   "Hey, you got any money?"  He asked Joshua coldly.   He stood there silently as Joshua reached into his pocket, pulled out one of the dollars from his change. He didn’t want any trouble.  He figured this guy would take it and leave, and that would be the end of it.  But when he handed it to the guy, the guy’s face turned angry.   "What's this?"  He barked.  "ONE dollar?  Give me a break, I mean gimme some REAL money!"   His two buddies heard his voice, and they began to move down the car towards them.  Joshua now realized he was in a little more trouble, and the seven dollars or so he had left, wasn't worth getting into a fight over.  Even if it meant he had to walk the rest of the distance past the subway to his house.
So he pulled out the remaining bills, handed them to the guy leaning over him, saying "There, you happy now, you cleaned me out".   The guy stood up, counted the bills, and with a sneer-like smile, said back to him "I don’t think so, you don't look like somebody who only carries seven bucks on him.  What’s in your wallet?"   Joshua replied to him "I don't have my wallet with me, I left it at work.  What you have there is the extent of what I have!”   The guy looked back at the money, then back at Joshua "I don’t believe you", he said to him.   He then turned to his friends and said to them, "stand him up.”   His buddies took hold of each of Joshua’s arms to pull him up.  Joshua shook them off, standing on his own.  Joshua was face to face with the one blond, who must have been the leader of this rag-tag group.  As tough as the blond tried to look, he had to feel the contempt in Joshua’s expression, staring him back down.   Joshua knew the odds were not in his favor, it was best to remain cool.  The blond moved his hand inside Joshua’s jacket, looking for signs of a wallet, then patted his side pockets down.  He found nothing.  His eyes never left Joshua’s, as he reached around him.  He felt the back slacks pockets as well.  Joshua said nothing the whole time, he just stood still, thinking that if he remained cool, eventually someone would get on at a stop, and these three would back down or take off.  However at every station they entered it was the same story, nobody around. By now the blond was clearly becoming agitated, frustrated at not finding any money, and also by Joshua's calm, unafraid attitude towards him.   "I can't believe this is it!" The blond said, flashing his fist with the bills in it in Joshua’s face.  "You dress like you have a lot more than that.”   It was true, Joshua was dressed well. In the years since he had graduated from college, he had worked very hard, and was finally beginning to enjoy a little bit of financial success, which allowed him to purchase suits from some of the better men’s clothing designers.  The suit he was wearing tonight was a personal favorite of his.  It was an Italian designed tropical wool single breasted suit.  It was extremely soft fabric and expertly tailored.  The color, a soft hue of something between a putty, and fresh creamed butter.  The suit was matched up with a crisp white shirt and a navy patterned silk Armani tie. He wore his Italian black loafers. Joshua did cut a striking image. It helped that he was good looking also. He had brown hair, with a blond streak in it.  His features were well-portioned for an athletic body.  He was your typical all-American up-and-coming junior executive. Tonight though, he was as out of place as he could be.  Standing there in that suit, on a train racing northward, in the company of three young men out looking for trouble.   The tall blond stepped closer to Joshua. His face directly in Joshua’s face, staring hard into Joshua's eyes. Joshua showed no emotion, and the silence for the first time in the car, was almost deafening.  Finally the blond looked away.  He looked to one of his other buddies, who was standing with the third at Joshua’s sides. "I don't like this guy.  I don't like his attitude, and I certainly don't like his suit!’  The blond sneered.   He looked back at Joshua.  His eyes were running down Joshua’s chest.  The blond reached up and felt the fabric along the lapel. "What is this made of, paper?" The blond asked.   He started laughing, his friends joining him. He gripped the lapel tighter, and pulled it downward.  The fabric tightening to its limits.   "It doesn't look very strong! Something like this could rip very easily I bet, what do you think?" The blond said sarcastically while looking at his buddies.   He turned his head to the side and flashed Joshua a cocky smile, waiting for an answer, but none came. His smile turned to a scowl, and his hand pulled down harder. The material strained.  The fibers began to fail, and finally losing the battle the unmistakable sound of ripping fabric filled the air.  Joshua refused to look down, but he knew his jacket had been torn.  He stood frozen not giving any satisfaction to the guy. The blond stepped back, snickered, looking at his handiwork.  "I think it’s an improvement!”  He laughed and fell back into the seat.   He sat back, staring coolly at Joshua, and then to his friends. "Finish the job guys!"  He ordered them.   He crossed his feet and locked his hands behind his head, watching very closely the events about to happen.  His two friends quickly grabbed Joshua by his arms, locking them down to his sides, where he was held by one of them from behind. The other quickly went to work, wasting no time, grabbing the sleeves of his jacket and ripping them down.  The sleeves were laid to waste, gathered up low on his arms.  He then began to rip at the jacket.  The pockets were torn free and then the rest of the collar was ripped downwards.  Piece after piece of Joshua’s Italian suit jacket was torn away, and tossed aside, or it was left hanging in shreds.  Joshua didn’t budge.  He kept his eyes on the one sitting on the seat who was watching the whole time. Joshua stared hard at him. The one holding Joshua from the back joined in, seeing that Joshua was not resisting. He used one of his hands to begin tearing Joshua’s slacks from the back.  He ripped each back pocket of Joshua’s trousers, tearing the fabric down to his shoes in long shreds. The other guy was now on Joshua’s shirt.  He tore a sleeve free.  He then ripped the front of Joshua’s shirt open, exposing his white t-shirt. The buttons from his shirt exploded off.  They bounced and rolled down the car length.  His shirt collar was ripped and pulled free from his necktie which was still around his neck.  His shirt was pulled down his back.  This locked Joshua’s arms behind him.  The guy dropped down, and quickly tore at the front of his slacks in a similar fashion to his friend in the back, in long narrow shreds, exposing Joshua’s legs. His legs were covered in downy light brown hair.  His pants were ripped in the crotch, tearing the seam running between his legs.  A good deal of the fabric from the back of his slacks hung forward now, and hung between Joshua’s legs.  The guy grabbed hold of the zippered area, and yanked hard, breaking it free in one piece, exposing the bulge in the front of Joshua’s bright white cotton briefs.  There was very little left of his slacks by now, a few inches here and there, were still attached to the loops that was holding tight to his black leather belt. The rest of his slacks were down around his ankles.  His OTC socks still untouched, as were his white t-shirt and white briefs.   They paused, looking to their bud who was sitting the whole time, watching with great interest. He gave Joshua a good looking over.  Joshua still refused to budge, he hadn’t moved an inch, or made any sound of protest. The blond scratched his chin for a second, squinting as if to be studying Joshua and the situation. "Well guys!"  He finally let out in a slow drawl.  “That’s an improvement.  But you can do better yet."   Immediately they went back to work.  They finished ripping off the remains of Joshua’s torn suit.  Joshua just stood there, wearing his white tee shirt, white briefs and black OTC socks and shoes.  Now taking hold of Joshua’s t-shirt, they split it down the middle from collar to waist. Each took hold of a side and pulled hard.  Finally they ripped each half free from Joshua.  They unbuckled Joshua’s belt.  What was left of his slacks quickly slid down his legs.  One of them grabbed a sock top, stretching it to the ripping point.  He pulled at the sock until he was able to tear it.  He ripped Joshua’s sock down.  The stretched and torn sock lay limp over Joshua’s shoe.  His buddy went after Joshua’s briefs.  He used both hands and grabbed hold of the front fly opening of his briefs.  He pulled them in opposite directions.  Joshua’s briefs were unable to withstand the assault.  His briefs tore open where the fly front had once been.  Joshua’s ample cock and balls dropped free, swinging below a patch of neatly trimmed brown pubes.  He continued tearing the material all the way around Joshua’s torso, until the elastic waistband snapped free against Joshua’s skin.  He then took hold of the waistband as well.  He looked closely at the waistband as though he had never seen ‘Fruit of the Loom’ briefs.  He then slid the waistband down his legs.  Both assailants stood up, and held him, like it was an inspection.  In a way it was.  The blond leader of their pack was now on his feet.  He stepped forward to get a closer view.  This man, who moments ago was dressed for success, was now totally nude, except for a silk tie still knotted around his neck, and one dark sock still hanging on his leg.  The blond moved very close now, and Joshua could feel the guy’s breath along his neck, and the sensation of the guy’s hand, brushing against his cock.   "I like you like this!"  He whispered hoarsely into Joshua’s ear.
Joshua was not amused, he had had all he could take of these three, and was now quickly losing control. It’s hard to tell, what would have happened, had Joshua remained alone to deal with them.  But change was in the air, and after the sounds of many subway stops going unanswered, the sound of a new voice was heard.  This one was loud, deep and angry.  Before Joshua even had a chance to see who it was, he felt a rush of air next to his head.  The stranger had punched the blond.  Then the stranger had an arm around the neck of the blond.  The blonde’s eyes popped like saucers, before he was thrown to the subway floor.  The blond was out cold.  The stranger then rushed down the aisle after the other two.  He grabbed one of them, and with one punch the thug was on the floor. He quickly caught the other thug and did the same to him.  Both thugs were on the floor.  The stranger dragged both of them by their collar back to where the blond and Joshua were and dropped them both on top of the blond.   “Are you alright?”  The stranger asked Joshua.   “Thanks, I am now!”  Joshua responded.  “I am not sure how I will get home looking like this!”   “We will fix that!”  The stranger said.  “One of these guys should be about your size!”   Before Joshua could even respond, the stranger was on top of one of the thugs.  He flipped him over, and undid his jeans.  Then within a blink of the eye, he yanked the guy’s jeans off him and tossed them to Joshua.   “Try these!”  The stranger said.   Joshua tried them on.   “They are too small for me.”  Joshua sheepishly said to the stranger.   “No problem!”  The stranger replied.   The stranger pushed the guy without pants aside.  Joshua got a good look at him.  Under his jeans, he was wearing a pair of tattered dingy grey white briefs.  It was obvious that when the stranger pulled the jeans off the guy, he tore the back of his briefs just below the waistband, exposing his arse.     The stranger then went to the second guy. Again he flipped him over onto his back and unfastened his jeans.  As quickly as he did with the first guy, he had his jeans off him and tossed them to Joshua.  Joshua put them on, and they were really too big for him, but he told the stranger they would be just fine.  He would use the belt from his suit slacks to hold them up.  The stranger looked Joshua’s way and said no way could he be seen in those baggy big jeans.  Joshua then got to look at the second guy.  He was commando.  His bubble butt was there for all to see.  Joshua did not find any underwear inside the jeans, so he knew he had to be commando.  This also explained why he was examining the waistband of Joshua’s Fruit of the Loom briefs. Perhaps he had never seen a pair of them before.   “Stop, stop!”  Joshua exclaimed.  “You can’t take their clothing off them and just leave them!”   “Why not?  They were going to leave you naked, if not worse.”  The stranger proclaimed.   Before Joshua had a chance to protest, he had the blond leader of the group laying on his back.  He was not wearing jeans, but a pair of black leather trousers, that were a match to his black leather jacket.  The stranger noticed that there were laces holding his leather trousers up instead of a waist clasp and zipper.  He loosened up the laces on the trousers and started to slide them off the blond.  They were nearly skin tight on the blond, so they were a bit more difficult for the stranger to get off him.  However, he did manage.  Once the leather trousers were off the blond, the stranger chuckled.   “Isn’t this sweet, he is wearing a matching pair of leather briefs under his leather trousers!”  The stranger said.   With that, along with his leather pants, the stranger removed the blonde’s leather briefs and tossed both items Joshua’s way.   Embarrassed, but a bit aroused, Joshua but the leather briefs on.  He had never worn underwear that was so provocative.  All he ever wore were tighty whites.  Once he put them on, he kind of liked the erotic feel of the leather against his skin.  He then pulled the leather trousers up.  They fit him quite well.  He laced them up and was surprised at how they felt on him.
The stranger looked at Jason and said, “Good, those look perfect on you!  You just need one more thing.”  The stranger yanked the blonde’s leather jacket off him and handed it to Joshua.   “Hopefully this outfit will allow you to get home without complete embarrassment.”   “Thank you!”  Was all Joshua could manage to get out of his mouth.
Just then the train began to slow down and stop.  As soon as the doors opened, the stranger picked up the three hoodlums one at a time and tossed them out of the train.  Joshua ran over to the other side of the train in time to see all three hoodlums sprawled out on the ground.  One of them wearing his leather jacket and tattered torn briefs.  The other wearing his leather jacket and naked from the waist down.  Then there was the blond leader of the group, he was totally naked.  As the train left the station, Joshua saw uniformed law enforcement nearing the trio.  Joshua looked away from the trio.  He wanted to once again thank the stranger for his assistance.  However when Joshua looked around the empty train car, there was no one there.  Joshua thought the stranger must have gone into the next car, so he decided to go to the next car and talk to him.  When Joshua tried the latch on the door to the car, he could not open it.  It was locked.  Joshua was able to see into the next car through the door window.  He looked the best he could, but the next car seemed to be empty.   “Where did he go?”  Joshua said as if expecting an answer.   Of course, no answer came.
Finally, Joshua’s stop was coming up.  As soon as the subway train stopped, Joshua exited the train.  He looked around hoping to see the helpful stranger, but he was the only person to exit the train.  Now it was time for Joshua to make the trek home from the subway station. It would be about a five mile hike for him to get home.  It was nearly dawn by now, and was a bit chilly outside.  Joshua stuffed his hands into the pockets of the leather jacket. He felt something in the pockets. He pulled his hands out, grabbing hold of the contents he felt in the pockets.  To his surprise, he pulled out two huge wads of cash.  He did not count it, but he realized there had to be well over two grand in cash.  This now made all the difference to him, he saw a taxi cab nearby, and hailed the driver. Once in the cab, Joshua asked the driver if he could use his cell phone in order to call a locksmith so he could get into his house.  Joshua called a twenty four locksmith who said he would meet Joshua at his house.
Once Joshua was safely in his house, he pulled the cash from the pockets of his leather jacket before taking it off and dropping the jacket onto the floor.  He could not believe his luck there was nearly four thousand dollars stuffed into the pockets of the jacket.  Joshua smiled to himself.   “What luck!”  He thought.  “I can replace my suit and still have money left over!”
Joshua walked around his house trying to completely calm down and relax.  He poured himself a stiff drink.  While he was pacing the house and sipping his drink, Joshua realized he had an erection.  He was thinking about seeing the three hoodlums nearly naked and then he himself wearing leather trousers and briefs that were rubbing against his cock and thighs was making him horny.  Joshua rubbed his cock through the leather trousers.  He was really getting aroused.  He unlaced his leather trousers and slid them off.  He tossed them on the floor on top of the leather jacket.  His cock was nearly spilling out of his leather briefs.  Without the leather trousers, he realized he was even more aroused than he was wearing the leather pants.  He was so turned on now, that he could no longer stand the strain.  He pulled down the front of his leather briefs and just barely touched his cock.  He could not contain himself anymore.  He shot his load all over the leathers.  The harder he pulled his cock, the more intensely he came.  Without even realizing it, he was shouting obscenities at the pile of leathers on the floor while shooting is cum all over them.  Now completely spent and exhausted, Joshua pulled up his leather briefs before he collapsed in a chair and fell asleep.

What are the benefits of turnstile security entry points
Turnstile access control system guarantees high security. It restricts unauthorized entries and only allows those who are eligible to get in to the current scenario. Setting up a turnstile in your space would therefore allow in enhancing the security and ban the unwanted individuals from accessing.
Logitme is the top Turnstile Gate Suppliers in Dubai, UAE who can assist you in securely and efficiently managing your organization’s access requirements. In Dubai, UAE, we are a distributor partner for Tansa and Daosafe turnstile manufacturers.
Daosafe is one such entrance automation system that ensures the safety and efficiency of the entrance. It’s also simple to integrate with any access control system. It offers a comprehensive system that combines swing turnstiles and full height turnstiles for both indoor and outdoor environments that demand high security, such as airports, construction sites, and sports venues. Since the entire material is sturdy, anti-rust, and water-resistant complete brushed stainless steel, these are long-lasting, strong, and robust.
Tansa turnstiles have a strong quality-to-cost ratio and are frequently used in access control solutions. They accept a wide range of proximity, magnetic, and biometric readers and work with them. These are built to perform well in both internal and external environments. Custom-designed turnstiles with optional features are available for usage in particularly humid or dusty environments if the relevant specifications are provided at the time of sale.
Turnstiles which are in full height could represent as a barrier against threats. The large size of such turnstile would disallow the criminals from accessing in the beginning. Therefore it could act as a guard dog and keep us safe from the major threats and theft activities.
Setting up a turnstile access control system permits the well organized entrance and exit into the provision. Since the entrants could simply show their credentials to a turnstile and they could gain access easily by showing a key fob, access pass, or ID card. If there is no turnstile gates installed it would seize a huge time to get the approval of the attender to get in after submitting the required documents. Thus we could make sure that turnstile gates could eliminate the traffic evolving in the traditional access procedures.
Turnstile gates could somehow save your very big amount in a long run. This is because turnstile gates are automatic in nature creating a complete secure atmosphere where you need not hire an employee for the purpose of verification. They also make it much difficult for people to sneak into venues without paying, permitting you to minimize losses and increase your bottom line. By substantially reducing labor cost and losses from unauthorized entry it is easy to notice that how a turnstile access control system can minimize expenses and save you money in the long run.
Turnstiles are usually installed with counters that keep track of the number of users enter a facility and the entry time. This data is crucial for a company’s analytical team. With this data, a company can derive their peak traffic time and the number of people used their facilities daily, along with other traffic trends. This analysis proves to be some of the most important data for amusement parks, subway stations, and more.

I saw that someone also started an AU of this movie, but I decided to release my story too, because it's probably my favorite romcom, and also because Natendo made this beautiful fanart based on the movie poster for me when I started working on this project.Check Natendo's awesome art here https://archiveofourown.org/works/36644743/chapters/91405744

My father was a liar.
Well, I guess that's a little strong. He was in the door-to-door sales business. His maxim was to never leave the customer's house without selling them something. So he specialized in sales pitching.
He would do the same thing with me, he would tell me stories. Sometimes they were about all the places we were going to visit. Exotic places, white sandy beaches, sea and oceans. The Poconos weren't good enough for us.
But most of the stories he told me were about my mother. He said they met at a jetskiing demonstration on a beach in 1964. There was a contest to win an hour on a jet ski. My father won. When he saw my mother's disappointment, he offered to spend the hour with him. It seems they had a magical day together.
At sunset, she gave him her phone number and told him that if he didn't call her the next morning, she would know that he didn't really love her. He put the number in his wallet and on the train home...a pickpocket stole his wallet. A less loving man would have despaired, but not him. He remembered that she was a schoolteacher and the next morning he searched every school in New York until he found her. I asked my father once how I could know when I was in love and he said, "The day I met your mother, I heard For once in my life."
For once in my life, I won't let sorrow hurt me
Not like it's hurt me before
For once, I have something I know won't desert me
I'm not alone anymore
For once I can say, "This is mine, you can't take it"
As long as I know I have love, I can make it
For once in my life, I have someone who needs me
Mobius, 40, was sitting in his cubicle, giving out tokens to people who wanted to ride the subway, thinking about his past.
He still hadn't heard For once in my life , but when he saw this man, he thought at first that maybe this might be the kind of person who would let him hear this music. .
He, this was the breathtakingly handsome man who came down the subway stairs with a confident step. He wore a cashmere overcoat over an Armani pinstripe suit and carried his briefcase with panache. He had strong, chiseled features, a square jaw and eyes that any movie star would envy. But it was all a little too much for Mobius, too blond, too strong, too bright. But his smile... maybe he had a brother? In any case, there was something about this man that made him want to get to know him.
He had started passing by Mobius' subway booth in September. Monday to Friday, between 8:00 and 8:20.
One Monday he didn't show up and Mobius was worried. But it was a holiday and he returned the next morning.
He approached the booth and slipped $1.25 into the slot.
Mobius smiled and slipped him a token. He picked it up, didn't look at it, and walked through the turnstile. He hadn't really talked to him, but Mobius knew that one day he would. If only to hear the sound of his voice.
He got on the train. Mobius followed him with his eyes until the subway pulled out of the station.
Mobius sighed, "He's just too perfect."
**********
That evening, at the end of his workday, Mobius was painfully pulling a Christmas tree hanging on the end of a rope out of his living room window. He started talking to himself, "$45 for a Christmas tree and they don't deliver. You order $10 worth of Chow mein from Twin Dragons and they deliver it to your door."
Mobius pulled the rope as Croki, his tame dwarf alligator, looked on curiously. The Christmas tree swayed as it rose into the air.
"I should have gotten blue spruce, they're lighter."
Mobius huffed and exhaled as he pulled on the rope. The tree moved closer to the fire escape. Suddenly, Croki slid between his feet, tripping him.
Mobius shouted, "Croki!"
Croki bolted through the half-open door. With Mobius off balance, the tree swung wildly back and forth. Mobius struggled to hold the rope.
He spoke again, "Don't look down! Don't look down!"
Mobius tried to pull the rope down. The tree swayed again and under the weight, Mobius had no choice but to let go. He closed his eyes as he heard the sound of breaking glass as the tree smashed against the window of the ground floor apartment.
"Mobiuuuuus!"
*********
A little later, Mobius was in the apartment of its landlord, Casey Senior. Croki was hiding behind his legs. The landlord had covered the broken window with plastic and was sitting at his desk filling out complaint forms. He was reading aloud, "Nature of the damage, Christmas tree went through the window. How am I going to describe this to my insurance?"
Mobius looked down, embarrassed.
The landlord continued, "They're still pissed about that arson I did on Staten Island."
Mobius replied softly, "I'll pay for the damage, sir."
"Why didn't you bring it up the stairs?
Mobius shrugged, "I couldn't carry it myself and you don't like pine needles in the hallway. I'm sorry."
"It's okay, Mobius."Mister Casey patted him on the shoulder and added, "My brother is in the window and door business."
Mobius headed for the door and as he was leaving turned around, "I almost forgot." he pulled a small gift from his pocket, "Merry Christmas ."
Mister Casey patted him on the shoulder and added, "My brother is in the window and door business."
Mobius headed for the door and as he was leaving turned around, "I almost forgot." he pulled a small gift from his pocket, "Merry Christmas Sir."
The owner looked surprised, "Mobius, you didn't have to do that."
"I wanted to."
Casey Senior, embarrassed replied, "I haven't done my Christmas shopping yet.  What-"
"Hey, Dad, can I give the bottle of gin your cousin gave you to my probation officer?"
That was Casey Junior, the landlord's son.
"Junior, can't you see I'm talking here?"
Mobius opened the door to leave.
"You know Mobius, you're a nice person, Casey too is... well like you and he's still single."
Mobius looked at Casey Jr. He was bending over and looking into the refrigerator. His low-rise pants showed the beginning of his butt crack.
Mobius commented with a wry smile on his lips, "Yeah, well, that's surprising. Okay, I'm going to go now. Good night."
"Good night Mobius."
Mobius smiled and the door closed. The hall was empty. Mobius took Croki who had followed him in his arms.
"Next time you try to set me up with Casey Jr, I'm getting a cat."
Croki grunted in protest and jumped out of his arms. Arriving at his apartment, Mobius looked at his mail. A Christmas card. He opened it. It was stamped "Happy Holidays from your mailman." Mobius carefully placed it on his bookshelf next to Christmas cards from the garbage man, the phone company and the florist. He found a Christmas record and put it on the stereo, then opened a box of Christmas ornaments and began decorating his battered tree.
*********
The next day, Mobius was having his daily lunch in the same small restaurant where he went every day. A waitress walked through the busy restaurant and past him. Mobius opened his wallet and pulled out a stack of travel brochures. The colorful flyers advertised everything from castles in Europe to sandy beaches in the Caribbean. He carefully spreads them out on the table.
"Have you picked?" the waitress asked.
"The usual," Mobius replied.
" Which is?"
Mobius sighed, "A tuna sandwich and a can of Josta."
The waitress scribbled on her notepad and left. A slight noise caught Mobius' attention and he turned to the window. It was his boss, Ravonna Renslayer, knocking on the bay window.
Mobius quickly gathered his travel brochures and put them in his wallet. Ravonna had entered, and was blowing on her hands to warm them.
She sat down across from Mobius and said, "I expected to find you here."
Mobius shrugged and retorted, "And I expected you to find me on a beach in Bermuda jetskiing."
Ravonna leaned a little closer to Mobius and said with an engaging smile on her lips, "I recommended you for employee of the month."
Mobius, smiled, surprised, "I didn't even know there was a reward for that."
The waitress came over to them and Ravonna said immediately, "The usual."
The waitress nodded and left. Mobius frowned. Ravonna pulled a piece of paper from her pocket and began to read aloud, "Supervisor Ravonna Renslayer appoints Mobius Mr. Mobius as employee of the month. Mobius is never late and always works on holidays, even if he worked the previous holiday. Because he worked on Thanksgiving, Mobius is willing to work on Christmas too.
Mobius interrupted Ravonna, "I don't work on Christmas."
"They give you a plate with the mayor's signature."
"I didn't vote for him."
"More paid vacations."
Mobius was not impressed.
Ravonna said encouragingly, "And you get a day off for your birthday."
"My birthday is at Christmas."
Ravonna folded the paper, slipped it back into her pocket, and said in a sincere tone, "Look, I know you worked on Thanksgiving. But I have been invited to my mother's house. Bee can't change because she has a big family party and I promised the kids I would be there for them this year."
"Ravonna, that's not cool!"
"I know, I know Mobius," Ravonna replied, patting his arm, "It's not fair and I can't make you, but... you're the only one who..."
Ravonna paused before finishing her sentence, looking embarrassed.
Mobius finished it for her, "I'm the only one who doesn't have a family."
*********
On Christmas Day, Mobius thought gloomily about this conversation while in the booth.
A train entered the station with a dull thud. The doors opened. A young couple got off, laughing and carrying Christmas presents.
A family emerged from another car and pushed open the swinging exit doors.
Mobius sat forlornly in the booth. Andy Williams' song "I'll Be Home for Christmas" was playing on the radio.
Mobius couldn't stop his throat from tightening, everything around him was screaming about the joy of spending Christmas with his family and his loneliness hit him even harder. He sighed and lowered his head when he saw a hand slide the money before his eyes. He reflexively swiped a token.
"Merry Christmas."
Mobius looked up because this was the first person to say those words to him since he had taken his shift
It was Mister Handsome in a cashmere coat standing on the other side of the glass. He smiled at him. The whole station seemed to light up.
Mobius was so amazed that he just stayed there with his mouth open.
Mister Handsome took his token and in an instant he was gone.
Mobius banged his head against the glass and felt like pulling his hair out.
"Four months, four months I've been waiting for this moment, I haven't taken a sick day. I could have said, Merry Christmas to you, You're really handsome, Don't you have a brother? But I didn't say anything!"
He banged his head against the glass again.
"Idiot, idiot, idiot!"
Suddenly he heard a scream. He looked through the glass and saw that the man in the cashmere coat was being assaulted by two men. Mobius reached for the phone when he saw that the man lost his balance and fell backwards off the platform.
"Oh my God!"
Mobius dropped the phone and stormed out of the booth. He ran through the turnstile and along the tracks.
Suddenly, he saw the lights of a train appear in the tunnel.
"A train is coming! Get up!" Mobius sped up again.
The man did not move. Mobius got close to him, got down on all fours on the edge of the platform and held out his hands to the man on the ground.
The train horn sounded.
"Sir! Can you hear me?! A... a train is coming!"
The man opened his eyes, obviously dazed, looked at Mobius and fainted.
Mobius got up and shouted, "Help! Help!"
The train was still coming closer. Mobius swung over the edge of the tracks and reached even farther. The train horn sounded again.
Mobius looked at the speeding train and then at the helpless man. He breathed in, closed his eyes, and jumped off. He fell next to the unconscious man, got up and tried to lift him. But his coat was caught.
Mobius pulled on the coat and tore it.
Then he decided to lie on top of the man, wrapped his arms around him and rolled with him just in time to the side into the notch that the workers use to let the trains pass. He just felt the wind from the passing train and opened his eyes. They were both safe and sound.
Mr. Handsome was unconscious but even more breathtaking.  Mobius stared at him. He really was perfect, too perfect.
He sighed with relief and said to the unconscious man, "You better have a brother and he better be hot!" All chapters

Misdirections- Chapter 1: Nice Stranger
Read it on AO3
Previous: Prologue
One year later
A sleep-deprived Cyrus reluctantly drags his feet to his last period class. He is clearly having a bad day today. And as if that wasn’t enough, he has chemistry last. The mere thought of having to watch Mr. Wright dryly explaining how to do a stoichiometry problem while he fiddles with his pencil sends an involuntary groan down his throat. Cyrus isn’t usually quick to judge people, but two weeks into his senior year, he’d already decided that Mr. Wright must be the most boring person on this planet and that at best, this class would be a total waste of his time.
That’s probably what annoys him the most whenever he sits there wanting to be anywhere else. Lately, Cyrus finds himself running out of time so often that he can’t afford to waste any. For example, today is Friday so he should theoretically feel comforted by the quickly approaching relief of the weekend. In reality, he is anything but, because today is SAT prep day. Most people had taken the test once in the spring of their junior year, and maybe a second time during the summer, which Cyrus also had done. And yet despite scoring in the 1500s both times, he was determined to take the test one last time in October to make he sure he got as close to a perfect 1600 as he could.
But now as he waits outside his chemistry class, leaning against the nearest locker, eyes closed, and running on a meager four hours of sleep, he begins to rethink his decision. Just as Cyrus begins to think that he might be able to take a nap standing up, Mr. Wright strolls into the classroom, no more excited to be there than his students. Cyrus senses the movement of his classmates going inside and switches to autopilot as he opens his eyes and follows everyone inside, hoping to get through the next 50 minutes without boring himself to death.
To make matters worse, chemistry was the only class he didn’t share with at least one of his best friends, Andi and Buffy. As he looks up to the clock for the 1000th time, slumped in his chair with his chin resting on his hand, Cyrus can’t help but think about how much less agonizing this class could be if he could even steal a glance to one of his friends to silently communicate his despair. Cyrus looks at the clock again. It’s only been maybe 30 seconds since the last time. Right when he decides that this couldn’t get any worse, his stomach rumbles impossibly loudly as to prove him wrong.
Of course he’s hungry. Because he stayed up late last night doing the practice problems his private SAT tutor had assigned him for today, he had missed his morning alarm and was late to school, not that he is normally a morning person anyway. Per the school’s strictly enforced lateness policy, this meant that he could not leave the building to buy his lunch, so he was stuck with questionable cafeteria food. Buffy was kind enough to sneak in some fries for him when she’d gotten back from lunch outside with Marty, but if the second growl he’s hearing from his stomach is any indication, it wasn’t nearly enough.
Already bored out of his mind, Cyrus sighs, seeing no additional harm in reminiscing the rest of this godawful day. Things had gone downhill after lunch. This year’s first bake sale for the student government was, to put it mildly, an epic fail. All because people can’t do the simple task of keeping their promises. As a result, they only brought about a quarter of the baked goods they said they would bring for the bake sale. To add insult to injury, two of the three people who had agreed to help Cyrus sell completely bailed.
Even then, he hadn’t given up and was still hoping that he’d be able to pull it off and sell the limited amount of cookies and cupcakes he had. Unfortunately, today was Friday which meant that the longer lunch period and the fact people had more money early in the school year had incentivized a significant amount of the student population to eat outside. He can’t believe he wasted his free period trying.
Cyrus looks at the clock one more time. Ten minutes left. Mr. Wright is done lecturing and the students are left to work independently on a few problems. Though he couldn’t care less, Cyrus pretends to be working diligently because he still has to keep up his “good student” reputation. While he scribbles random numbers on the worksheet, Cyrus mentally makes a list of what he’s gonna do as soon class dismissed, reminding himself that every minute should be accounted for.
First, he’d run—or more realistically walk briskly—to his locker and dump his chemistry textbook and shove all the notes he’ll need for the weekend into his bookbag. On his way out, he’d probably run into Andi and Buffy and shout a goodbye at them. Maybe a quick hug. Then he’d rush to the train station and cross his fingers that the trains are running on schedule so that his twenty-minute commute to the Upper West Side goes as smoothly as possible.
If all goes to plan, he’ll be able to get a snack before his tutor arrives. After the session, he’d work on his college essay until dinner. Finally, he would FaceTime Buffy and Andi and they’d take turns complaining about the stresses of senior year. The weekly Good Hair Crew video call was the only thing he looking forward too, except that sandwich he may or may not have time for. If he wasn’t completely exhausted by then, maybe he’d get a headstart on his history project. But if he is being honest with himself, that was highly unlikely.
In the midst of all this mental planning, the bell rings, indicating the end of the period and of a dreadful school day for Cyrus. Nearly everything goes to plan, and he even gets to be in a group hug with Andi and Buffy who were conveniently waiting for him at his locker, aware of their friend’s earlier misfortunes. As the girls’ basketball team captain, Buffy has a meeting with the coach about this year’s tryouts after school and Andi is doing community service by helping the AP Art teacher, so they say their goodbyes and Cyrus promptly heads towards the exit, relieved that something today is going right for once.
With his faith in the universe renewed, Cyrus walks in long strides towards the train station, fueled solely by the thought of a hypothetical sandwich. It was only a three-minute walk, but today Cyrus makes it in two. Since every member of the Good Hair Crew lives in a different part of the city and took a different train, Cyrus had gotten used to taking the train alone. He wastes no time in looking for his student MetroCard, having stored it in his wallet phone case which his friends jokingly teased him about whenever they got the chance. But he didn’t care because it did the job. Cyrus swipes his card and pushes against the turnstile in one swift motion. He looks up at the countdown clock. One minute until his train arrives.
Perfect. It looks like I’m having that sandwich after all.
He continues to walk along the platform towards the head of the train because he’d figured out a long time ago that the third subway car was closest to the exit when he got off at his stop. He’s almost there when he sees the train arriving. As he takes his last few steps, he notices a fairly group of teenage boys. Quite frankly, they’re being so loud that it’s hard to miss them. The boys are standing right in the area where Cyrus likes to board the train, causing him to roll his eyes when he realizes he’s about to be in an enclosed space with them. Still, he decides not to get any closer and positions himself to use the other door.
The train slows down to a stop and all the doors open. While waiting for the passengers to get off, Cyrus shot one more glance at the mob of testosterone who at least had the decency of splitting up so people could get through.
That’s when Cyrus recognizes him. Actually, he’d recognize that head of blond hair any day, anywhere, anytime. Turns out, these guys go to his school. And they’re friends with him. Friends with Reed.
Fuck.
Cyrus is not expecting to see him here. It’s easy enough to ignore a junior at school, but there aren’t that many people in the subway car at this time of the day. He can’t risk Reed seeing him. Who knows what he might do? Especially with his friends around…
In the meantime, people start to step into the train. Lost in his panic, Cyrus doesn’t realize that he’s blocking the way, but a quick shove from an impatient middle-aged woman pulls him out of his thoughts. A voice comes through the intercom: Stand clear of the closing doors, please. Cyrus’ body goes into flight mode. He was as determined to avoid Reed as he was to eat that sandwich today. So he runs to the first door of the closest car just as the doors close behind him.
For a moment, he thinks he’s escaped the worst. Cyrus goes to move forward because he hates standing in front of the doors, only to be yanked back by his backpack. He knows almost immediately what’s going on: his bag is stuck in between the doors. But before he even has time to struggle, someone steps directly in front of him and reaches over his head and pulls the double doors apart with both hands to force them open before taking a step back.
“Oh my God,” is the only thing that comes out of his mouth. He is about to say something else when the train starts moving abruptly, sending Cyrus, who wasn’t holding on to the pole, stumbling to the side. He thinks he’s going to start falling for sure, but and hand firmly grasps his arm and brings him back to balance.
“Woah there,” his savior says, and for the first time, Cyrus looks up at him. Woah, Cyrus thinks, but he doesn’t say it. Suddenly, he is very aware of the stranger’s lingering grip on his arm and the vague scent of citrus that was definitely not coming from him.
The boy in front of him clears his throat and Cyrus realizes that he’s staring but he can’t help it. His eyes are just so… so green, and he was standing so close. After a moment, however, he looks away and collects himself enough to grab the nearest pole and straighten his posture with the little bit of dignity he had left. The other boy lets go of his arm and moves a reasonable distance away.
“You okay?” he asks with genuine concern in his voice.
“Um yeah. I- I’m okay. Thanks for...you know, thanks for the help,” Cyrus responds, trying his hardest to smile in the least awkward way possible. He feels the heat of embarrassment rise to his cheek and stares at his feet.
“Yeah, no problem.” Cyrus doesn’t know what to respond, so he doesn’t.
At the next stop, a seat empties next to where the boy was standing. He nudges Cyrus and motions towards the seat with his head.
“You wanna sit?” he asks.
“Sure, thanks,” Cyrus replies before taking off his backpack and sliding into the seat. Now that it was clear to him that he wouldn’t be making conversation with the other boy, he pulls out his headphones from his pocket, plugs it into his phone, and puts Troye Sivan on shuffle. It actually isn’t that unusual. New Yorkers in public transportation are quite impersonal, and people tend to be on their phones, listening to music or playing games during their commute. In fact, it would have been weird he’d attempted to start a conversation. He is a stranger, after all. A nice one, but still a stranger.
After a few stops, the “nice stranger”, as Cyrus begins to call him in his mind, gets off the train. Cyrus feels his body relax immediately and he takes a deep breath. Somehow, this triggers another growl in his stomach which reminds him of everything that happened in the day before his most recent incident. Inevitably, he is reminded of Reed and his obnoxious friends.
How had he forgotten? Forgotten that Reed also takes this train? He then remembers that a lot had changed over the summer. He probably wasn’t paying attention to it before, but he definitely knew that Reed took this train too. It’s just that it hadn’t been a problem before.
But everything is different now and he knows that too. He also knows that he can’t allow a repeat of what happened today. Sure, it wasn’t a guarantee that Reed and his friends would catch the same train as him every time, but the very possibility of it happening made Cyrus’ palms sweaty. No way. He couldn’t afford it.
On his way home, Cyrus decides to stop getting into the third subway car altogether. There was no doubt in his mind that taking a few extra steps to the exit was worth reducing the risk of running into the blond to zero. And who knows? Maybe it would increase his chances of running into someone else.

Both racial war, and its close cousin, ethnic war, result from contact between groups of different kinds—that is, diversity, which causes most of the world’s bloodshed. Americans seldom notice this. One reasons is that they are constantly told that diversity is a blissful state. But it isn’t. Consider: Catholics and Protestants in Ireland, Sunnis and Shia in many places, Jews and Moslems in Palestine, Hutus and Tutsis in Burundi, Hindus and Moslems in India and nearby, Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka, Chinese and Indonesians in Indonesia, French and Africans in Paris, and so on. The assertion that “diversity is our strength” seems an attempt to avoid realizing that it isn’t.
Racial and ethnic conflicts are cruel, often explosive, and irrational. They seldom make sense because the devastation and hideousness are disproportionate to the assigned causes. For example, the differences between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland are so slight as probably to be undetectable to you and me, yet the two fought murderously for years, blowing up pubs packed with member of the other faction. In the American case, nice and good-hearted people will point out that blacks are warm and friendly people if they like you, immensely talented in this and that, have legitimate grievances’ against society, and so on. All true. And irrelevant. Similar things can be said about both sides in most ethnic conflicts.
The prospect for bloodshed grows in the presence of other forms of social tension and is probably proportional to suppression of mention of the frictions. You can’t solve a problem if you don’t admit that it exists. The United States today is bent to the breaking point under many stresses other than racial. Severe economic uncertainty, declining standards of living, growing economic inequality, crushing debt loads to include student debt that hinders normal formation of families, hatred—not too strong a word—between Trump people and the coastal elites who rule the country, actual poverty in Appalachia, the Rust Belt, and the rural South, large and growing homeless populations, immigration, and the recent discovery that America consists of many cultures that do not like each other: New England, Alabama, West Virginia, Jews, Latinos, These constitute a poisonous accelerant that will detonate easily and intensify any conflict.
The danger is that a flashpoint will come, that for example BLM will mob the wrong house in the wrong state and the occupants will open fire, leaving a dozen dead. The entire country would explode. Nice well-intentioned whites would not be able to protest that they supported the fight against systemic racism. That is not how racial and ethnic wars work.
We are seeing a ferocious attack on the underpinnings of white European civilization , and for that matter of all actual civilizations. Japan, India, China, South Korea—none would buy into the enstupidation and degradation. Neither would Argentina or Mexico, which try to raise their cultural levels. Only America is on a downward path, in search of social justice.
Consider: Math curricula are being dumbed down because blacks do poorly at math, English grammar instruction eliminated because blacks can’t or won’t learn it, entrance exams for the elite and demanding high schools eliminated because blacks don’t pass them, SATs dropped because blacks score poorly on them, promotion exams in police departments eliminated because blacks don’t pass them. Entrance requirements at medical school are lowered because not enough blacks pass them, AP courses in high school eliminated because too few blacks get into them.
Dangerously, the government forbids white parents to have schools teaching what they regard as desirable material at what they regard as acceptable academic levels while requiring what they regard as civilized behavior. White parents are forced to see their children subjected to what they regard as obscene, semiliterate, violent, stupid, a culture dominated by what seems to them, (and would to any First World country) the opposite of cultivation. When parents whose daughter wants to go into electronic engineering see her forced into pseudo math taught by teachers who couldn’t recognize a partial derivative if it spoke to them in tongues, when she ought to be in AP calculus, they are not happy. But there is nothing they can do about it. Yet.
The renaming of streets and buildings, the toppling of statues, the near worship of a negligible armed robber and semi-derelict, the renaming of military bases in narcissistic self-abnegation are winding a spring. It is dangerous that those angrily promoting the appeasement, the media, the talking heads in New York, do not see the advancing fury. These people, substantially congruent with the coastal elites, elected Trump by being contemptuous of Middle America and blandly unaware of the brewing storm. They are doing it again.
Yet it is black crime that is likely to provide the ignition. The figures are stark, undeniable, at the level of states, municipalities, FBI. These numbers are unknown in any other civilized country. It is perilous that black men rape white women at a high rate, while the reverse barely happens. Sexual transgression pushes primordial buttons that are not wise to push. At what seem shrinking intervals black mobs burn cities, loot and destroy stores., wreak havoc on neighborhoods, and go largely unopposed. Governments at all levels fear them, know that if they respond forcefully, the entire country will go up in flames. The police are cowed and neutered, so crime rises sharply. Whites, intimidated—intimidated so far—flee. Many cities are now only formally part of the United States. The black mobs do as they please without consequence.
The appeasement of blacks, fear that they might riot, runs through society. Increasingly jurisdiction simply give up on enforcing the law. Cities like Chicago and New York have abolished cash bail to that criminals immediately go free, and immediately often offend again. Baltimore and Chicago no longer prosecute minor offenses such as prostitution and urinating in public. San Francisco has made shoplifting of goods worth less than $950 a misdemeanor, the shoplifters not being Asians, with the result that to this date seventeen Walgreens have closed (video). Cities stop prosecuting the jumping of subway turnstiles as this is done only by blacks and Hispanics. The latter won’t riot. The former will, and governments know it. When blacks very often racially attack whites, the media suppress the story. There are many, many of these attacks, covered briefly in local media but ignored by the majors, caught on video that circulates widely online.
Twenty-four Black on White Homicides in a Month. Read it. This goes on all the time. Over and over.
The racial attacks on whites and Asians share an unsettling explosiveness, an apparent lack of impulse control or awareness of consequences. A black shoots a store clerk for telling him to pull up his mask. Or black man stabs 96-year-old Asian woman. A black man shoots a white woman because she cut him off in traffic. Black man throws white five-year-old off third-floor balcony. Black man stabs four-year-old to death. Black man shoots white five-year-old in head.
The psychology here is strange. Shooting a child with no provocation in front of witnesses, or throwing one off a balcony in front of witnesses, or shooting a clerk for saying “Please pull up your mask,” all certain to lead to life in prison or close to it, is baffling.
What the country is doing hasn’t worked, isn’t working, and shows no sign of working. Things get worse by the month. With Biden, Harris, Pelosi, and so on apparently doing everything they can to infuriate the other half of the country—gun control, open borders, erasing the South, anti-white indoctrination in the schools, promotion of sexual curiosities, on and on, anger will grow. As the man associated with Finland Station asked, “What is to be done?”
Unfortunately nothing can be done. Anything that might work is politically impossible, and anything that is politically possible won’t work. Cosmetics, moral preening, lowering of standards, party politics—none of these will fix the country. In calmer times, saner heads might prevail. Partial alleviation might be achieved by allowing, or encouraging, voluntary segregation, taking white police out of black neighborhoods, letting black neighborhoods decide what laws to enforce within their own boundaries, letting the races decide for themselves what to teach their children, and to the extent possible allowing racial autonomy. Instead, the elites will double down on what isn’t working and nothing will get better, except the monthly sales at gun shops.

Seven High Frequency Indicators for the Economy
These indicators are mostly for travel and entertainment.    It will interesting to watch these sectors recover as the vaccine is distributed.
IMPORTANT: Be safe now - if all goes well, we could all be vaccinated by Q2 2021.
----- Airlines: Transportation Security Administration ----- The TSA is providing daily travel numbers.
Tumblr media
Click on graph for larger image. This data shows the seven day average of daily total traveler throughput from the TSA for 2019 (Blue) and 2020 (Red). The dashed line is the percent of last year for the seven day average. This data is as of Nov 8th. The seven day average is down 65% from last year (35% of last year). There has been a slow increase from the bottom, but has been weak lately. ----- Restaurants: OpenTable ----- The second graph shows the 7 day average of the year-over-year change in diners as tabulated by OpenTable for the US and several selected cities.
Tumblr media
Thanks to OpenTable for providing this restaurant data: This data is updated through November 7, 2020. This data is "a sample of restaurants on the OpenTable network across all channels: online reservations, phone reservations, and walk-ins. For year-over-year comparisons by day, we compare to the same day of the week from the same week in the previous year." Note that this data is for "only the restaurants that have chosen to reopen in a given market". Since some restaurants have not reopened, the actual year-over-year decline is worse than shown. Note that dining is generally turning down more in the northern states - Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New York - but only turning down slightly in the southern states. ----- Movie Tickets: Box Office Mojo -----
Tumblr media
This data shows domestic box office for each week (red) and the maximum and minimum for the previous four years.  Data is from BoxOfficeMojo through November 5th. Note that the data is usually noisy week-to-week and depends on when blockbusters are released. Movie ticket sales have picked up slightly over the last couple of months, and were at $12 million last week (compared to usually around $150 million per week in the early Fall). Some movie theaters have reopened (probably with limited seating). ----- Hotel Occupancy: STR -----
Tumblr media
This graph shows the seasonal pattern for the hotel occupancy rate using the four week average. The red line is for 2020, dash light blue is 2019, blue is the median, and black is for 2009 (the worst year since the Great Depression for hotels - prior to 2020). This data is through October 31st. Hotel occupancy is currently down 29.0% year-over-year. Notes: Y-axis doesn't start at zero to better show the seasonal change. Since there is a seasonal pattern to the occupancy rate, we can track the year-over-year change in occupancy to look for any improvement. This table shows the year-over-year change since the week ending Sept 19, 2020:
Week EndingYoY Change, Occupancy Rate9/19-31.9%9/26-31.5%10/3-29.6%10/10-29.2%10/17-30.7%10/24-31.7%10/31-29.0%
This suggests little improvement over the last 7 weeks. Some of the recent decline in the occupancy rate is just seasonal. ----- Gasoline Supplied: Energy Information Administration -----
Tumblr media
This graph, based on weekly data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), shows gasoline supplied compared to the same week last year of . At one point, gasoline supplied was off almost 50% YoY. As of October 30th, gasoline supplied was off about 8.8% YoY (about 91.2% of last year). Note: I know several people that have driven to vacation spots - or to visit family - and they usually would have flown.   So this might have boosted gasoline consumption in the Summer and early Fall at the expense of air travel. ----- Transit: Apple Mobility ----- This graph is from Apple mobility. From Apple: "This data is generated by counting the number of requests made to Apple Maps for directions in select countries/regions, sub-regions, and cities." This is just a general guide - people that regularly commute probably don't ask for directions. There is also some great data on mobility from the Dallas Fed Mobility and Engagement Index. However the index is set "relative to its weekday-specific average over January–February", and is not seasonally adjusted, so we can't tell if an increase in mobility is due to recovery or just the normal increase in the Spring and Summer.
Tumblr media
This data is through November 7th for the United States and several selected cities. The graph is the running 7 day average to remove the impact of weekends. IMPORTANT: All data is relative to January 13, 2020. This data is NOT Seasonally Adjusted. People walk and drive more when the weather is nice, so I'm just using the transit data. According to the Apple data directions requests, public transit in the 7 day average for the US is at 52% of the January level. It is at 41% in Chicago, and 55% in Houston - and declining recently. ----- New York City Subway Usage ----- Here is some interesting data on New York subway usage (HT BR).
Tumblr media
This graph is from Todd W Schneider. This is daily data for this year. This data is through Friday, November 6th. Schneider has graphs for each borough, and links to all the data sources. He notes: "Data updates weekly from the MTA’s public turnstile data, usually on Saturday mornings".

Air Quality

Many a bicyclist will tell you that they feel better after even a short trip on a bicycle. The NYC bicyclist below had not bicycled in years due to the congestion of New York City. People left the city, the cars disappeared, and masks appeared on the few outside. Streets became breathable. Exhaust and congestion disappeared from the horizon. During lockdown, she found emptier streets, and rediscovered how much she loved bicycling. She said, “It’s the quickest, most effective way to get good chemicals.”

Stir crazy? Yes — nature, the outdoors, and exercise is the quickest way to get good chemicals firing in one’s mind. You can also socially distance while being active with others around.
Cities are rethinking space and adding bicycle infrastructure on a continuous basis, and the coronavirus crisis presents an extra opportunity to reflect and take bolder action that some cities are seizing. Paris, Milan, and Brussels, for example, are trying to get closer to the ideal set by Groningen, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam in terms of mobility for two-wheelers.

More policies to prevent congestion and air pollution benefit everyone. For the reinvigorated bicyclists, it is about a better way of life. They get a refreshing new alternative to the repetitive turning of the crowded turnstiles of packed subways or jumping in an Uber or Lyft. Will city dwellers simply go back to the old ways? Not so fast. Exercise fires off the happy notes instead of the rush or inertia of shared indoor spaces. What growing numbers of city citizens want is more bicycle infrastructure to make this possible. Commuters are investing in bicycles. E-bike sales are up. Commuters are getting serious about bicycling.
France will see over 1000 kms of temporary bike lanes sprouting in the next weeks! Even in rural areas! ⁦@jen_keesmaat⁩ ⁦@RobinMazumder⁩ https://t.co/5Ypn5sHAj3
— Tudor ALEXIS (@tudoralexis1) May 10, 2020
Paris Mayor Hidalgo has sustained her position on anti-pollution and anti-congestion measures.
New York City, changed dramatically, is evolving. It’s a relief to not have exhaust blowing in one’s apartment window, hands clapping for health care workers instead. The Verge reports that 12 miles of roadways were opened to pedestrians and 9 more miles of protected bike lanes were added. “That was in addition to the nine miles of roads that have been closed to cars since early May. NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is frequently criticized for his use of a city-owned SUV, has said his goal is for a total of 100 miles of open streets.”

Bicyclists have always improved air quality. The break from congestion and clearing of city skies shows us that in new ways, along with hard data regarding the pandemic that just reinforces the point.

A Choice for Commuting Post-Lockdown
Along with the revived bicycle travelers venturing out, inquiring more about bikeshares, bicycle paths, and better streets, electric bicycles are reportedly selling in higher volumes. An e-bicycle offers long-distance journeys with more energetic security and ease on the way home.
Bicycling is experiencing a renaissance. It is not simply about the recreation or leisure for more and more people. It is going to be a serious choice for commuting post-lockdown. Those of us who’ve enjoyed it pre-pandemic will tell you, it’s a wonderful way to travel.
I’m accustomed to electric bicycles. Here’s myth busting #1: Yes, you still get that cardio workout, that needed exercise. What you avoid, especially in the heat, is overextending yourself and overheating. You also get simple relief up the hills if you’ve packed your bicycle basket full and are carrying a backpack as well. (And it is the end of a long day.)

COVID is Pulling the Electric Bicycle Adoption Curve Forward
Planetizen reports, “North America has experienced a 5% jump in rates of cycling since the U.S. started staying home. As electric bikes enjoy impressive sales increases, cities around the world consider making the shift permanent by planning bike-friendly infrastructure.”
“Smart commuters are investing for the long term and going for e-bikes,” The Verge reports Gocycle founder Richard Thorpe as saying. “We have seen sales of our fast-folding Gocycle GX range rocket upwards within the last few weeks — literally at a rate 4x in urban areas compared with this time last year. COVID is pulling the adoption curve forward.”
Some cities were active and on top of policy and infrastructure for bicyclists long before COVID-19. Sadiq Khan has always been out front in his bicycle advocacy. CleanTechnica reported on his work in 2016, for example, in “London’s Mayor Announces 5-Year £770 Million Bicycling Investment.”
🚴‍♀️ So excited to see the new cycle lane going in on Park Lane last night.
🚴‍♀️ Together with councils, we’re rapidly creating new cycle lanes, and space for people walking, across our city. #StreetspaceLDN pic.twitter.com/Nd1oAQKJzV
— Sadiq Khan (@SadiqKhan) May 14, 2020
Let’s hope cities stay strong. Some places made the necessary transition decades ago. Copenhagen (and Denmark in general) changed due to the energy crisis of the 1970s. They have a wealth of bicyclists that make the city and country a better place to live.
Here’s more on that Denmark history:
“The energy crisis of the 1970s and growing environmental awareness led to traffic switching from cars to bicycles and public transport and to an increasing demand for improved conditions for cyclists. An example of this was the annual cyclist demonstrations in the major cities from the late 1970s. Authorities and planners became aware of the problems which cyclists faced, and bicycle traffic began to form a greater part of traffic planning. From 1982 to 2001, every budget contained funds allocated to the construction of cycle paths and improvements of conditions for cyclists.”
USA, learn the lesson.
Even with great electric cars on the market, many of us choose and prefer an e-bicycle whenever possible. If you haven’t done so yet, give one a try!
